Medetation on consequences of secrets revealed

I found this book to be more of a long meditation on the consequences of secrets revealed, perceived betrayal, and acceptance of loss.

One day, over thirteen years after it happened, Kat Williams sees the face of her next-door neighbor on television in conjunction with a murder. She feels it is her duty to turn him in. But later on, she is sorry that she did.

Ethan Ford has been living an exemplary life in Monroe, Massachusetts since a few days after that long-ago murder. He had been on his way somewhere else when he happened to stop in Monroe for a drink and ran into Jory, the girl he eventually married. They have been madly, passionately in love ever since. And Ethan has been an active member of the volunteer fire department, a coach for the little league team, and the owner of a small business (he repairs and remodels homes) for much of that time. He and Jory have a son, Collie, who is Kat Williams best friend.

The people in Monroe have strong opinions about the murder charges. Some of them, jealous of Ethan and Jorys happiness, are only too happy to believe the worst, and begin to vilify him publicly and insult Jory and Collie to their faces. My favorite character is Kat. She is a rather hard bitter person for a young teenager, but some of this is because she has her own problems. Her father committed suicide almost exactly a year earlier, and she is still trying to deal with this.

Super fun book to listen to!

Fun story and the best narrator that I have ever heard! I highly recommend it!

Interesting, but not gripping.

Some of the characters voices sounded whiny and detracted from the story.

Surprised by "BOO"

Reluctantly, I made the decision to listen to "BOO", by Rene Gutteridge. It was well worth the listen. I enjoyed a steady dose of belly laughter. Gutteridge's verbal caricatures of common church beasties served to disarm them of their lethal weapons. "Laughter does good like a medicine", says the proverb, and this story was great medicine. In the mix of humor, we get to see the difference between those whose hearts are humble in Christ and those who are religious enough to make religion their slave. I am looking forward to hearing the next in the series.

More than a, "coming of age" story

I especially enjoyed this book for the author's use of poetic language. She didn't just describe scenes, she made us see and feel them. She used such phrases as ",...the low sun ignited little white signal fires that flashed at Alice." I also like the fact that she treated the children with respect. She portrayed them as having great intelligence and wit. She gave them serious roles and treated their games seriously. All of the characters had interesting personalities that were easy to relate to. I would recommend this book to anyone.

A rare gem.......

A jewel of a book! I am so glad I read this novel, and will definitely read more of Carrie Brown's writings. I was drawn into Alice's world from the first page. Loved the close relationships between Alice and her family....the love they had for each other;the interactions and caring concern for the neighbors and friends in a small town; the descriptions of their everyday lives. When Alice's world begins to change over the course of the summer, we are drawn in by the sadness she feels at her brothers' departures for school, the close bond she develops with her adorable, quirky new friend, Theo; and the lessons of tolerance they both learn when Kenneth is introduced into their lives. I savored every word and phrase. Beautifully written!

Wonderful

I have listened to "Memory of Running" several times, and found it inspiring. I got "Traveler" because I liked Ron McLarty's reading voice, but the book was surprisingly deep and the voice was just as good. I have already listened to is twice. One of the best books ever.

AOK Book

I loved McLarty's book, Memory of Running, so I had high hopes for this book as well. It was okay, but for me this story just didn't have that special quality. It is a fine solid book, I don't regret listening, but oh the other. I suppose this is an author's curse, having readers compare. McLarty delivers the feel and character of Jono's neighborhood perfectly, the story-line just didn't keep me so engaged this time though.

Another great hometown tale

Mclarty does it again. Using the tale of the present with moments of the past. He spins a great tale with a surprise ending. It is easy to associate with his tales of growing up and having best friends. He does a great job of weaving a store , that shows how what has happened in the past effects what is happening today.

Mclarty also is one of the best readers today in the audiobook business.

Traveler is as good as memory of running. I really enjoyed it

Easy Listen

Ron Mclarty is back again with another easy listen. Although the novel is probably classified as drama. humor can be found in every chapter. The story is quick and easy to follow.

Although The Running Man, also by Ron Mclarty is still the best the Travler should not be ignored.

Great Story read by the author

Would you consider the audio edition of Traveler to be better than the print version?

I was first introduced to Ron McLarty with "The Memory of Running" which I loved and still go back and listen to again from time to time. This one is a different story with a similar feel. It all takes place in Rhode Island, near where I live, so this really great story has a special "hook" for me. Give it a listen, you won't be able to put it down. I have listened to this one several times and it still has appeal to me, like a favorite movie.

A Classic-to-be

Though this charming novel boasts many elements that typical readers might not normally find endearing--drag queens, a WASPY-Jewish fancier of outmoded gentlemanly ideals, a filthy New York apartment--"The Extra Man" is an undiscovered modern classic. Ames writes about taboo topics with a mixture of panache and vulnerability to utterly charming results. Henry Harrison, the aged/ageless man-about-town and centerpiece of the novel, is one of the most memorable and endearing characters I've encountered in a work of fiction in years, and Ames' excellent reading of the Harrison part only adds to the appeal of this recording. One warning: while Ames writes about perversions with delicacy and care, this book is not for prudes.

Why was this book written?

There is no plot and no development. There was not a single element that captivated me. There a numerous better books covering controversial issues and contemporary society.

And the slightly bored narration tested my patience. I finished it but was relieved when it was over.

This time I really disagree with the critics. I disliked this book. After waiting for a plot, I had invested so much time listening, I finished it but recommend against it. In my opinion the book is humorless. This is the first talking book I've ever disliked and I've listened to a lot of them.

wonderful book

I was a little afraid that with 20+ hours of listening I would find this book boring. But I loved every minute of it. The characters are lively and well drawn and you just have to keep listening to the unfolding of the story. Sussman manages to write not only an intelligent and suspenseful thriller but gives you something to think about long after the end of the book

First Rate

I thought I was in store for another Da Vinci Code clone but I was completely wrong. This is a superbly written, fast paced novel with well drawn characters and a terrific mystery(ies). Further adding to the depth of this novel is its setting in a richly crafted milieu of modern Middle East tensions. The story has several twists that are unexpected (and not the least bit contrived) and like all truly great mysteries, the clues were there for the reader all along. At the unexpected and very satisfying ending, I immediately went looking for more by Mr. Sussman.

Gordon Griffin is a superb performer in the pantheon of Barbara Rosenblatt and only a handful of others. He brings the characters to life and adds quality to an already first rate story.

Excellent!

Don't know why several of the others didn't really care for this novel. I thought it was fast paced, well read, and excellently written. A little cliche on the Middle Eastern relations but with unique twists and turns. If you enjoy Middle Eastern religious history, this is well worth the credits.

Not as advertised

This seems to be using the historical mystery as a ruse to lure in the buyer. The story seems to be actually a hit-over-the-head message that every one in the Palestenian/Jewish conflict are people. Of course, message books are legal but that is not how the book is being sold. If you want a thriller, a mystery that is compelling, this is not the book. If you want multiple sad stories about how awful the whole history is but how every one has a legitimate right and there are no real villains, then this is for you. For me the story doesn't stick to one story line enough to be interesting and the characters are cartoons. The da vinci code can be criticized but it did have a chase. Here the chase is rarely mentioned much less happening and seems to be dressing for the author to feel good about trying to look at the conflict as filled with sympathetic individuals who all have valid points of view. The whole thing is not what expected and as a picture of the Middle East doesn't ring true.

Read the book instead

I don't normally like abridged versions and this proved why. The book is much more enjoyable and fills in all the little gaps that this reading has. If you've read the book, I don't think you'll enjoy listening to it. If you haven't you really might enjoy this.

It's almost as if she's afraid to really take a risk. I've read several of her books. This one feels like Harris-lite. Still, it's worth the time.

Where does Blackberry Wine rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

I liked this book - the abridging did make me feel I had missed quite a lot of detail and the traversing between different times made it hard to get into. When you settled into the plot though it was lovely. Unsuprisingly, Harris takes this book to Larncany, the citing of many of Harris' books. I would have preferred some more character development, but that may be due to abiding. I liked where the story headed to.

Harris wrote well for a male perspective and I liked the detail of description.

What does Derek Jacobi bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

I love his tones of voice and his emphasis on words was spot on for me. Lovely to listen to.
