Great series; Houdini's story still fascinates

Where does Who Was Harry Houdini? rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

The Who Was...series is one of my kids' favorites, especially out of the educational titles they listen to.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Harry and his wife are both compelling characters.

What does Kevin Pariseau bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

He is definitely a pleasant narrator. He doesn't intrude but keeps one engaged.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I have always found Houdini's story a bit sad but thankfully some of the poignant aspects were downplayed, which helped with listening to it before bed with my 12 year old.

Any additional comments?

I'd recommend this series to anyone looking for educational audios for kids that they will see simply as entertainment. Both my 12 and 15 year old have enjoyed them -- as have I.

Great book! Engaging mystery for both kids and adults.

"Eleven" draws you right into the mystery of the main character's past in the first few paragraphs. It builds incrementally with each chapter, clue by clue, until finally, the puzzle of the past is revealed at the end of the book. Great characters and a fun read!

Adorable feel good story

Cute book. Nicely timeless, and with a nice gentle story. Just enough tension to draw you along, while never losing sight of the happy ending.

Would recommend for budding artists, kids with challenges to overcome, and really just anyone who loves a quick read with a satisfactory happy ending. :)

This book is written with an adolescent- minded heart. The plot will keep you guessing right up until the end. Love the friendship theme.

Eleven by Patricia Reilly Giff

Patricia Reilly Giff is one of my favorite Young Adult and children's authors. She isn't afraid to discuss the troubling issues youth encounter in our society, but she doesn't overdue the negative side of life, either. Her characters are believeable and you can look forward to a positive outcome. I enjoyed this book about a boy who has trouble reading, and finds a newspaper clipping with his photo at 3 years old. The caption reads..."Missing." The natural questions come: "Was I kidnapped?" "Is my grandfather not my grandfather." A new friend helps him find out the truth about himself. A great book about friendship and loyalty.

Just Right

A pretty good book, well suited for kids. I read it because I wanted to learn something about him, but not listen to hours of maneuvers in colonial counties during the American Revolution. That worked...I got just enough Lafayette to suit me. It was very readable/listenable.

A touching and compelling examination of a familiar fairy tale

The story of Rapunzel is perhaps one of the most psychologically intriguing of the Grimms Brothers fairy tales. A story of obsession, isolation, and the healing power of love, Rapunzel is my third favorite of the Grimms fairy tales; surpassed only by "Snow White" and "Hansel and Gretel."

Donna Jo Napoli has taken the story of Rapunzel and rewoven it into a psychological study that is both chilling and heartrending.

Zel lives with Mother in a remote cottage in Switzerland. She is a carefree young girl who loves her mother dearly. Mother has unusual abilities and talents when it comes to gardening, and she loves Zel with an unsurpassable desire. Zel cherishes the moments when she and Mother journey to town in order to buy supplies, but these visits are often mysterious. Often, Zel is unable to hear conversations of the villagers, and she is forbidden to socialize with people as well. One fateful day, Zel meets a young man in town, and her idyllic life drastically changes.

This novel is unforgettable as each chapter is told from a different perspective. The best chapters are the ones in which Mother gets to tell her own story. I felt great sympathy toward this character as well as repugnance at her actions. Napoli does a superb job of illustrating Zel's childhood innocence and awakening knowledge.

Katherine Byars reads this novel with vibrancy. Her depiction of Mother is wonderful! Please give this outstanding book a chance. God bless.

Follows the original

I started this book not realizing that this was a retelling of Rapunzel.

This book is told from the point of view of three characters. The first is the girl, Zel. She is named after her favorite lettuce, Rapunzel. The second character is simply known as mother. She who would sell her soul to be a mother. The third character is Konrad. He would give anything for the girl he meets in the market. The girl who captured his attention by her giving nature.

This book follows the tradition of a fairy tale, it has a dark quality. I was hooked by Napoli's writing. She knows how to enchant through the written word. She doesn't hold back on describing the anguish of the characters. Each of them fight inner demons that make the story more interesting.

Because of some of the subject matter, I would only recommend to readers 16+.

Delightful!

I read these books when I was a child. I started reading these stories to the kiddo's. It's very nice to have a quiet time in the evening reading these wondrous stories to the children. The discussions that invariably present themselves are worth their weight in gold, then add to that the spark of imagination that results is truly amazing. No amount of video games or TV & movies can replace one hour of Nathaniel Hawthorne!

Even though this book does not include the wonderful lithographs the original books did, the stories stand by themselves. Of course, the seriously low price of the books would negate the pictures. The book itself is high quality. The paper cover is very thick & glossy. The pages of the book are bound to the spine for longevity. I can predict this book will disappear and miraculously reappear in one of the childrens bookshelves when they strike out on their own, to seek their fame & fortune, defeating hideous monsters they meet along the way.

MIssing pages and illustrations resemble rorschach tests

Tanglewood Tales was an old childhood favorite (beaten up hard-cover edition, with color Maxfield Parrish illustrations). I was so looking forward to sharing this version of the Greek classics with my own kids.

Okay...a literary critic I'm not. I just wanted to drop in and say that this version SUCKS. There were quite a few missing pages, and the illustrations were mostly black globs.

A total rip off.

FIne Read for Lovers of Vintage Mythology

This is one of those books I had been meaning to read since I was young. It doesn't disappoint. Though the re-tellings are somewhat old-fashioned and quaint, they are rich in description and bring the old Greek myths to life. (And actually, I prefer old-fashioned to modern writing, sometimes.) Nathaniel Hawthorne was a master of the novel and short story in the America of his day. It is just plain fun reading this! Originally written for children, it has much "adult appeal", too.

My 1st grader loves it

My first grader loves it. He's not a very strong reader,

but loves science. With this book, he's interested in the science,

and pictures, so is willing to work on reading the text.

I don't know what age this was written for

I bought this book for young elementary students but feel that the physics presented and the angle on his life were better suited to high schoolers. My mistake.

Good Graphic Novel

Good graphic novel - used this to teach about Isaac Newton and the Laws of Motion for my Special Needs, Middle School students. The graphics helped them understand the concepts of motion and forces, who this great scientist is, and what he did. This is a good way to teach about scientists, especially those who have lived in the past. Would like to see more novels about famous scientists.

Well Done Biographical Comic Book

I found this book good for getting your child interested in science and biographies of famous people. Although not a thorough expository of Isaac Newton's life it was still interested. The artwork is fantastic but unfortunately it's only 32 pages long. I suggest this book for little children since it does not contain enough information for older kids.

Nice series for science lovers

8yo son loves this - it's fairly lightweight in terms of science, but is a really good intro and way to get kids engaged.

A Call to Courage

It's one thing to read about prejudice and injustice and totally different to experience it personally.A Thousand Never Evers introduces young readers to these painful realities through the eyes of twelve-year-old Addie Ann.

Shana Burg manages to conjure the context of race issues in 1963 Mississippi with richness and intensity and has created characters that pulse with emotion--love, jealousy,anger, grief, sadness, terror and courage. The reader feels the interconnectedness of the black and white communities, how inextricably woven and interdependent they are and how fear and power operate to maintain the unjust status quo.

This book will engage readers and while it gets pulses racing, it will open their eyes--and hearts--to important issues of social justice.

I recommend this book.

Book good for all ages

The book A Thousand Never Evers is required reading for our granddaughter this summer. We are reading it together. It is an interesting look at the segregation issues of the 1960's, including the Ku Klux Klan, and other incidences of discrimination, through a novel. The story teller is a young black girl going into 6th grade - which my granddaughter can relate to. I relate to it as well as in the 60's I was the same age as the girl in the story and can remember very well all the situations she faces. It's a good read and a learning experience for today's youth.

It was easy to read as it was for young readers. I only read it for a Book Clun I'm joining. I don't know how they choose their books but I enjoyed the story as I grew in this time.
