    Title: The Light
Subtitle: Morpheus Road Trilogy, Book 1
    Author: D. J. MacHale
    Narrator: Nick Podehl
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 46 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-20-10
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 199 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
Marshall Seaver is being haunted. In the first installment of this chillingly compelling trilogy, 16-year-old Marshall discovers that something beyond our world is after him. The eerie clues pile up quickly, and when people start dying, it's clear that whatever this is - it's huge.
Marshall has no idea what's happening to him, but he's soon convinced that it has something to do with his best friend, Cooper, who's been missing for over a week. Together with Coop's sister, Marsh searches for the truth about what happened to his friend, ultimately uncovering something bigger than he could ever have imagined.

Why doesn't Kvothe just use sympathy already?
Referencing the Kingkiller Chronicle as Podehl's other work. He did a good job narrating. He has a good voice for male coming of age novels. 'Nuff said.
Probably my fault for not studying up MacHale's other work, but there was nothing about it in the description. For those not generally familiar with his work, this is definitely young adult fiction. I didn't know this so not long into it I found myself thinking, "what's with all the horror movie and awkward teenager cliches?"
After I realized that the book is for the young and I forgave all the trite stuff it actually turns out to be a pretty good story. There are some very enjoyable set pieces where the "monster" attacks. These are cinematically described and quite vivid. MacHale's words and Podehl's cadence during the mysterious revelation scenes is also quite engaging.
Unfortunately, one tool the author beats to death is Marsh's uncanny inability to predict his scene. I'm sure MacHale does this so the reader's surprise matches the character's, but it is so consistent that it's distracting. If he thinks something will go well, it becomes a catastrophe; if he thinks he's in trouble, he is saved; if he thinks she hates him, he gets a kiss. It is more predictable than gravity. Usually, there is very little contextual reason that Marsh should have his misconception. MacHale simply describes the misconception then "surprises" you with the opposite, over and over.
My hangup on the cliches and that particular device aside, I think I would recommend this book to a teenager looking to read a little light horror. The action is good; the mystery is good; and the story moves along at a steady pace.

    scary good fun
What did you love best about Streets of Panic Park?
As usual goosebump stories proove entertaining and thrilling for my 7 year old. We are planning a road trip and she is trying to figure out which new titles she needs.
    Any additional comments?
Not for the child that is easily scared. They are spooky.
    Why background music?
The "background music" was so loud it overpowered the narrator. Who wants music in an audiobook, anyway? Either the producer/director/publisher of the audiobook didn't believe the narrator was good enough to carry it off (and I can't comment on that, since the narrator's track was inaudible above the din of mood music), or they believed the listener couldn't follow the plot without some assistance. Either way, this was a waste of a book credit. Sad, too, because Stine's writing is so enjoyable.

    Abridged?!?!?! Why?!
I love the stories in this collection.
    But...
Why even bother with abridged versions?
Excellent world, excellent predecessor novels and trilogies...
    excellent narrator....
Halfway decent abridge-er... but abridgement SUCKS THE LIFE OUT OF THESE WORLDS!!
WHERE ARE THE IMPORTANT DRAMA-ADDING DETAILS?!?!
Abridged subsequent tales after such amazing tales presented in their complete states?!?!
    Lacking...
    Half-assed...
    Teasing...
...but not enough to convince me to pay for the full versions if they come out later.
I could have been a lifelong fan, (probably will be - but from a different source), these stories are Tolkien-equivalent-worthy! Robert-Jordan-worthy... but some idiot talked them into publishing ABRIDGED versions!!!
Makes EVERYTHING incomplete and takes the LIFE out of the stories. Makes everything DISCONNECTED!!!
    I'm stopping HERE!!
Maybe 10 years from now when I'm not angry at AUDIBLE.COM for providing SOME of the tales in their complete states, and the later tales in disjointed half-story-states (aka ABRIDGED!) I might try again and these authors and the brilliant narrator might be worth my adoration- but as of now, the abridged versions are just pissing me off!
    I'm DONE!!
No more edge chronicles until you provide COMPLETE versions.
    THEY ARE WORTH PUBLISHING!!!
Whoever decided to do abridged versions should be fired!
    ...DAMMIT!!!
Get the whole things- narrated by the same narrator...
    ...PRONTO!!!

Great read! My 9 year old son absolutely loved it! He's now on to the 3rd book in the series. First book series that really got him into reading.
    Bloom continues to blossom
I first got hooked on Simon Bloom through the audiobook. The narrator, I mean Narrator, fit perfectly into the madcap world that is basically a junior American version of Douglas Adams' Universe series. I had a great deal of fun listening as I worked. The second book continues the craziness that is literally "science" fiction. The use of physics, biology, and other branches of science is simply wonderful! After all, who hasn't watched a TV show or movie and debated afterwards about whether or not you could actually do what you saw? (And I have to say, the dodgeball fight in the first book is definitely one I would pay to see onscreen! Let's hope they finally get around to releasing the movie in the near future.) I'm keeping an eye on Simon Bloom because I want to know what happens next!
    My second grader loves it.
He read it in 1 week. He did point out that it had some boring parts, but he still
was excited to read the 3rd book. (the Order of Chaos). For me, I'm glad he
loves the books, but the Order of Chaos was only available for the Kindle. We
    much prefer paper books.
    Awesome Sequel
This is a fun sequel to the first book, Simon Bloom The Gravity Keeper. The series is great for kids because it goes over various areas of science, including physics and biology. In this book, Reisman also added a glossary of science terms at the end of the book that is a useful reference for children (and me sometimes!). And, the story is really fun, too! Overall, highly recommended.

Meanwhile, a filly is born and begins her journey to a new home. As Lidie's story unfolds, so does the filly's.
Lidie's father runs a stable at a famous race track, and Rafael is training to be a jockey. As much as they want to make Lidie feel welcome, they still think of her as the little girl they left behind. They don't even know what a strong rider she is, and that she's determined to befriend and ride the wild filly her father has just bought: Wild Girl.
    Critic Reviews:
"Giff's characters are beautifully nuanced and entirely real, her prose is as streamlined and efficient as a galloping Thoroughbred." (Kirkus Reviews)

    Heartbreaking & Heartwarming!
Wow! What a great story! The protagonist, Lidie, is a lovable character and not just because she's horse crazy. The emotional turmoil is heartbreaking at times when she leaves her native Brazil and moves to Queens, NY to be with her father and brother who work at a racing stable. They still think she is a seven-year-old who loves Snow White, while Lidia is 12 and, unknown to her father and brother, rides very well. Being at a new school where no one understands her language, and she knows very little English, Lidia is overwhelmed.
A new horse at the stable named Wild Girl (Lidia's dead mother's nickname for her as well) helps her overcome all the new obstacles and bring the family together.
This is a "must read" for all young readers and horse lovers of all ages.
Fantastic book for horse lovers and young readers
This book is the story of a beautiful horse named Wild Girl and a girl named Lidie from Brazil. More than anything, she loves to ride horse fast! Wild Girl is a calm, gray, white and black horse that you would not expect to go fast, but she can really run! When Lidie turned 12, she moved to a farm in Queens, New York to live with her dad and brother, Rafael. Her dad and brother still think of her as a little girl they once left behind in Brazil. She needs to show them what a great rider she is, so they will realize that she's an older girl now and that she can truly handle a horse. Family and friendship are really what this incredible story is about. This amazing and fascinating story would be a fantastic book for horse lovers and students that enjoy reading fiction.

A funny nice book of kiddie horror stories.
    Kids Love It!
I use stories to start or end a class. These are great! They are usually 5 pages or less and have a twist to them. I call them the Pre-Teen Twighlight Zone. The kids can't get enough. Recently we have used these stories to write our own. Everyone wants to make their own cool story and we can follow Lubar's model to get started. Another thing the kids like is the section at the back where the author explains where he got the idea.
    Great book

This book is mostly about dog snappers and new for dogs
I wrote a 4 star because it didn't make it clear who the dog snappers were. They really did a good job at making it a mystery.
    Interesting
At the end of the story it was very interesting
I love the end of the story it was like Connor wad the nice and good one but he was not WOW
    Daughter loves the book
When I asked my daughter how she would rate this book, she said 5 stars. She said it was FASCINATING. My daughter is 9 years old.
A good book for your child to read.
My eleven year old daughter loved this book she could not put the book down. She had read a hotel for dogs and then this book.
    The book of pasion
I think that the way the author described the way aunt Alice felt when Andi said that she wanted to be like her was a sentence which you could really feel how she was feeling.

    Star Struck
This story kept the kids interest however it was full of evolution jargin. It reads as a story with scientific information added at the end of each chapter. This information relied completely on evolution being the only explanation for space and beyond. My kids got impatient with the scientific matter and wanted to move onto the story. There is a heavy science lesson in each chapter.
    Very Educational
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
If i was in the mood to learn about space and the science of space then yes. when i was listening i was not in that frame of mind. i needed to escape and this book was too educational to allow me to get lost in the story.
What was most disappointing about Lucy Hawkings story?
    nothing really.
    Which scene was your favorite?
    the costume party.
Do you think George's Cosmic Treasure Hunt needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
yes. as i understand it, they just discovered actual evidence of dark matter. let's have it.

    Witch Child
I loved the book, the history of Mary and others like her need to be remembered...What a terrible time in American history for Women....
History Comes to Life with Real Magic near Salem
A story of the narrow minded. Bless her for keeping a diary, I wonder how much of it is true. It's a beautiful thing to imagine how harmonious Indians where with the land. Varied culture has been greatly lost with the advent of pop culture, mainstream media, and corporations. The world is similar inside any border these days, this story gives you insight into a different time. Sad to think that people would give up so much to cross oceans for freedom only to find a worse kind of stifling terror because of childish boredom. This is a story of history; one girl-turned women's loss and struggle in the early dawn of the Salem witch trials. The diary implies much and ends abruptly. It also gives the idea that she has an engrained deeper magic in her blood.
You will have many musings while listening, or at least I did. I wonder how many buildings and settlements to this day desecrate Indian burial sites or other kinds of holy lands. We all can be close minded, even me, this story will definitely give you something to chew on regardless of your beliefs. Christian or otherwise - the true moral here is of truth, tolerance, fortitude, and suffering. The injustice of meddlers and bored seekers of false justice. I wonder what happened next?
Great narrator. Random music. Excellent book.
Not my favorite listen but well done from start to finish. I listened to the whole thing in one sitting.
A Glimpse Into the New World
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would if they enjoy history surrounding the Puritans and witch trials. The book was very captivating and kept me enthralled! The author wrote the book in a journal format which added a special spin on the story. It gave the story a different voice and captured a glimpse inside another's world.
What other book might you compare Witch Child to and why?
It has somewhat of the essence of "The Witch of Blackbird Pond" by Elizabeth George Speare because the content and setting is similar.
Which character as performed by Jennifer Ehle was your favorite?
Jennifer Ehle did an amazing job on capturing the personality of the characters through her voice! Even with the men, she was able to use her voice range and tone to embody the characters. My favorite was the main character, Mary, because she was a free thinker and free spirit. She was a relate able character.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I did feel angry with the little girls who were accusing her of witchcraft and "making" them bend to her will.
