    Title: The Jesus Dynasty
Subtitle: A New Historical Investigation of Jesus, His Royal Family, and the Birth of Christianity
    Author: James D. Tabor
    Narrator: James D. Tabor
    Format: Abridged
Length: 5 hrs and 52 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-28-06
    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 98 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
In The Jesus Dynasty, biblical scholar James Tabor brings us closer than ever to the historical Jesus. He sheds new light on Jesus' relationship with John the Baptizer, the role played by his brother James, and how Paul's ministry transformed Jesus' message into what would become Christianity.
James Tabor has studied the earliest surviving documents of Christianity for more than 30 years. He reconstructs for us the movement that sought the spiritual, social, and political redemption of the Jews, a movement led by one family. The Jesus Dynasty offers an alternative version of Christian origins, one that takes us closer than ever to Jesus and his family and followers.
    Critic Reviews:
"This book is accessible and sure to be highly controversial, attracting the attention of reporters, spiritual seekers, historians, and fans of The Da Vinci Code." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Provocative book
This is not historical mumbo-jumo like the "The Da Vinci Code." Tabors clearly works within the academic tradition, relying heavily on historical-critical method, but he is willing to fashion some unique ideas in his vision of who Jesus and his family member were and what they believed. Some of his ideas I don't buy. St. Matthew is one of Jesus' brothers? Maybe not. The ossuary of James is genuine? Doubt it. James is the ambiguous "beloved disciple" of John's gospel? I'm not so sure. But Tabor does much to restore James to his rightful place in the early church and elevate the importance of his letter. Bottom line: The author is unafraid to toss out novel interpretations while using tried and true methods. Try the book if you like the work of Bart Ehrman, Elaine Pagels or John Dominic Crossan.
    excellent
-As a newcomer to the "historical" Jesus, I found this audio book hard to put down.
-Indeed, the authors' views come from a critical yet respectful reading of the new testament gospels.
-I thought it was well read.
    Worth a listen
I would recommend to those who are interested in the history of the times of Christ. If you are offended by challenges to accepted religious teachings, this book will fan the flames of indignation. The facts presented are fascinating, the conjectures interesting, the ruminations are food for thought. His depth of knowledge by archeological experience is evident. I believe the book suffers greatly by abridgment. I do not like the technique of posing, could it be, perhaps, is it possible, so that the listener forms the hypothesis as if it belongs to them. To Discovery Channel. He uses this technique way to much.
Why, Why, Oh Why must authors think they should narrate their own work? Spend the money and hire an actor, it is worth it.
    Great Book
A must read for anyone who is interested in truthful history .Dr.Tabor gives a knowledgeable and thoughtful narrative. I have listened to this book more than once each time I learn something new. There is so much information that you may want to buy the hard copy to keep on your personal library.
    Interesting, but not Satisfying
Ignore the fact that the listening gets pretty dry in places. The author begins by debating the accuracy and origins of the accepted Gospels.

    Publisher's Summary:
Who was in the manger that first Christmas morning? Some say he would become a great moral leader. Others, a social critic. Still others view Jesus as a profound philosopher, a rabbi, a feminist, a prophet, and more. Many are convinced he was the divine Son of God. Who was he, really? And how can you know for sure? Consulting experts on the Bible, archaeology, and messianic prophecy, Lee Strobel searches out the true identity of the child in the manger. Strobel asks the tough, pointed questions you'd expect from an award-winning legal journalist sifting through the Eyewitness Evidence: Can the biographies of Jesus be trusted? Scientific Evidence: What does archaeology reveal? Profile Evidence: Did Jesus fulfill the attributes of God? Fingerprint Evidence: Did Jesus uniquely match the identity of the Messiah? Somewhere beyond the traditions of the Christmas holiday lies the truth. It may be more compelling than you've realized. Weigh the facts...and decide for yourself.

    Must read for all leaders
This a reference book to be listened to more than once. I wasn't expecting a live recording of a leadership conference. I found myself taking notes, pausing the audio, and taking more notes. Thank you Audible for making this available!
Excellent! A must read for all leaders.
Amazing. The conference recording style was very different for an audio book but still an excellent choice.
The 5 stars is for the last speaker
The 5 stars is for the last speaker, Henry Blackaby, who embodies what it truly means to lead like Jesus. The rest is normal leadership stuff you've read in other books but with a nod to Jesus' leadership style, some marginally biblical, others completely secular. Worth a listen even just for the very last speaker on the program.
I'm a devout Catholic and this was still bad
What disappointed you about Masterful Leadership?
I liked Ken Blanchard's 1 minute manager so I was expecting something easy to follow that had great insights. Instead, I hear pretty generic "things" that Jesus did to be a leader. It was extremely pandering. Very disappointed that I spent money on this book
Has Masterful Leadership turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, I like the other books
What didnt you like about the narratorss performance?
    Pandering
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Masterful Leadership?
I'd just throw out the whole thing and start from scratch.
    Great fabulous relevant
It was a wonderful way to hear from so many leaders about how they discover and carry out the will of God

    Publisher's Summary:
An emergency call, and I rush from my coziness into the dark community where the police have requested a chaplain. Arriving in minutes, I find the family imploding with grief having just discovered their son hanging in the garage. In a moment of unshakable pain, he jumped off the ladder and into eternity. And I will never shake the look in their eyes when I asked why he hadn't called a church.
    "Why would he do that?"
Across town, a pool of tears on my kitchen table as an out of town guest feels the weight of his infidelity, despairing that his famished soul finds no refuge and that he has to board a plane to feel fellowship.
"Has your church tried to help you?"
And the Christian leader confesses he hasn't been to church in years. Infighting, backbiting, heartbreaking, frustrating...church.
Though exceptions do exist, the reality is that church in America is failing one life at a time. Somewhere between pathetically predictable and shamefully entertaining, sadly sentimental and rarely authentic, church has become worst of all...godless. Vertical Church points to a new day where God is the seeker, and we are the ones found.
In Vertical Church God shows up, and that changes everything. If you want to experience God as you never have before and witness His hand at work, if you want to wake up to the first thought, "Thank God it's Sunday," if you're ready to feel your heart beat faster as you drive to your place of worship...then devour and digest the lessons of Vertical Church.

    Incredible Resource
What made the experience of listening to Vertical Church the most enjoyable?
Pastor James McDonalds delivers this message with both conviction and precision! Wow!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
This is not the kind of audiobook one can simply sit and take in all at once. Too much info. Take your time with it. Nevertheless it's amazing info I'd recommend for anyone to get. Every church needs to hear this!
Best church book I've read in a while
If you could sum up Vertical Church in three words, what would they be?
James MacDonald really presses every button and rings every bell for anyone who is in church ministry leadership. Everything he said is true and I knew it the moment I heard it. I just had never put it all into words the way he has in the Vertical Church book.

    Release date: 02-04-15
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 26 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
In 1858 a German princess who had been recently inducted into the convent of Sant'Ambrogio in Rome wrote a frantic letter to her cousin, a confidant of the Pope, claiming that she was being abused and that she feared for her life. What the subsequent investigation by the Church's Inquisition uncovered were the extraordinary secrets of Sant'Ambrogio and the illicit behavior of the convent's beautiful, young mistress, Maria Luisa. Having convinced those under her charge that she was having regular visions and heavenly visitations, Maria Luisa began to lead and coerce her novices into lesbian initiation rites and heresies. She entered into a highly eroticized relationship with a young theologian known as Padre Peters, urging him to dispense upon her, in the privacy and sanctity of the confessional box, what the two of them referred to as the "special blessing".
What emerges through the fog of centuries is a sex scandal of ecclesiastical significance, skillfully brought to light and vividly reconstructed in scholarly detail. Offering a broad historical background on female mystics and the cult of the Virgin Mary, and drawing on written testimony and original documents, Hubert Wolf tells the incredible story of how one woman was able to perpetrate deception, heresy, seduction, and murder in the heart of the Church itself.
    Critic Reviews:
"This sordid tale of sexual indecency, false saints, and murder within a 19th-century convent in Rome has all the trappings of a good thriller." (Publishers Weekly)

Even as a religious scholar (studied at Harvard Div), I was expecting a far less narrative. This puts me to sleep within 30 minutes every time I try to listen.
    good. interesting.
it goes on for quite a bit. If you're into history, you'll really like it. But the names and places are a bit tricky to follow, so you must focus on the info. it is nice and scandalous though ;)
    So boring.

    Members Reviews:
    Excellent meditation primer
I've heard James Finley speak in person and I've read a number of Fr. Keating's books on meditation. Finley's comments dovetail nicely with Fr. Keating's suggestions and provide a good template for beginning and advanced meditation. Finley's tutelage by Fr. Thomas Merton adds credibility to his concepts. Finley speaks clearly and succinctly in this book with good pace that allows for absorption and comprehension of his material.
    Profound yet approachable
I'm lucky to hear Jim Finley speak regularly, and am thrilled that others now have access to his teachings. He makes the meditative, contemplative tradition approachable to everyone, whether you have experience with meditation or not. I've listened to the set (especially the last piece, on Compassion) repeatedly and hear something new each time. Like many other teachers, when recorded he's less spontaneous than in person, but still vibrant and profound.
    Contemplative listening at its best
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I have read Finley's book, Palace of Nowhere, and heard him speak on other audios, but this recording is very special. I felt as if Finley were personally speaking to me, not just giving me information to process in my head, but leading me into a contemplative space where I could intuit and know reality in a new way. I would recommend it to anyone who is seriously interested in the contemplative way of the Christian tradition - though I suspect that those who are Buddhist or Sufi meditators would also find a treasure here.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, but I also wanted to savor it, and drag it out to last a long time.
    Warning! This is not meditation!
This should be under the title of contemplative prayer! Alos, does "dry mouth" spring to mind? I have done some public speaking and this would never happen to me! There are things you can do! I have a strong feeling that Mr. Finley has more will power and control than spiritual fervor! Otherwise he would have allowed a different title and someone to show him how to speak so that your tongue isn't sticking to your back teeth! If you just want history and information and you can tolerate mouth sounds, You will like this, otherwise I wouldn't reccommend this book for any kind of enlightenment!
    A fantastic listen
This is a fantastic guide to meditation. James Finley really understands trance and is able to guide you to experience it in its fullness. If you're pondering on what audio to get next, you've found what you're looking for.
