    Title: The First Christmas
Subtitle: What the Gospels Really Teach About Jesus's Birth
Author: Marcus J. Borg, John Dominic Crossan
    Narrator: John Pruden
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-24-11
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 65 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
In The First Christmas, two of today's top Jesus scholars, Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan, join forces to show how history has biased our reading of the nativity story as it appears in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. As they did for Easter in their previous book, The Last Week, here they explore the beginning of the life of Christ, peeling away the sentimentalism that has built up over the last 2,000 years around this most well known of all stories to reveal the truth of what the gospels actually say.
Borg and Crossan help us to see this well-known narrative afresh by answering the question, "What do these stories mean?" in the context of both the first century and the 21st century. They successfully show that the Christmas story, read in its original context, is far richer and more challenging than people imagine.

    Christmas... Something interesting for everyone
Following their book "The Last Week" the "The First Christmas" is a collaboration between two liberal yet main stream New Testament scholars, Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan, on the two nativity accounts in the Bible, that of Matthew and Luke. The writers take each account and discuss it in its own right, therefore moving away from the classic harmonisation of how Matthew and Luke relate Jesus' birth. With their background knowledge of the era in which Jesus live, they are able to illuminate both stories with very interesting facts, that puts Christmas in a new light. In the light of Roman Imperial theology they also bring out the political message for Christians.
The way that they respected and used Christian tradition while discussing the two Christmas narratives stood out. I think this is one of the highlights of this book. The book is also written in a very accessible manner. What I found a bit challenging was the references to Biblical texts that were difficult to remember especially when the content of an Old Testament passage was not discussed. Some information might also be common knowledge, especially for ministers of religion.
The book is guaranteed to provoke further discussion about Christmas and its meaning. While written by liberal theologians, this book will also be of value to Evangelical Christians and may even interest atheists. The narration is fair and easy to follow.
    The book comes highly recommended.
    Renews the Christmas spirit
If you could sum up The First Christmas in three words, what would they be?
    Critical, Renews, Reaffirms.
What about John Prudens performance did you like?
Clear and he brings the authors' to mind as you listen.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Borg and Crosson are leaders in the Jesus Movement. Their focus on the Infancy Narratives has the strength of reason and thereby puts them in a new light; a light that makes it possible for thinking people to revisit them without
    Any additional comments?
People don't have to leave their brains at the door when they enter these mysteries.
thought provoking, a little hard to follow audibly
Challenging, added more political context than I think I want to think about but still very spiritual. Will make my thoughts and devotion for advent 2015 more broad. A little hard to follow as an audible book though .

    Title: The Millennials

    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
At more than 78 million strong, the Millennials - those born between 1980 and 2000 - have surpassed the Boomers as the larger and more influential generation in America. Now, as its members begin to reach adulthood, where the traits of a generation really take shape, best-selling research author Thom Rainer (Simple Church) and his son Jess (a Millennial born in 1985) present the first major investigative work on Millennials from a Christian worldview perspective.
Sure to interest even the secularists who study this group, The Millennials is based on 1200 interviews with its namesakes that aim to better understand them personally, professionally, and spiritually. Chapters report intriguing how-and-why findings on family matters (they are closer-knit than previous generations), their desire for diversity (consider the wave of mixed race and ethnic adoptions), Millennials and the new workplace, their attitude toward money, the media, the environment, and perhaps most tellingly, religion.
The authors close with a thoughtful response to how the church can engage and minister to what is now in fact the largest generation in Americas history.
    Members Reviews:
5 years from publish date makes this unfortunately out of date when discussing millennials.
The research from this book was done only on those Millennials born from 1980-1991. Being that it was published in 2011 that makes the age of those researched between 19 - 30 at that time. Or in their 2016 age 24 - 35 now. I was born in 1979 and have been managing people in retail and sales environments since I turned 19 in 1998. According to the authors definition I've always been managing Millennials if any of my employees were younger than me. I can say with first hand experience that the work force didn't shift in 1998 or even 2005. The shift in employee behavior didn't show up in my work force until closer to 2010. In almost 20 years of managing Millennials I disagree with the research conclusions that they value marriage, that they have high respect for older generations, and that they are hard workers. Personally I think the time frame for the definition of Millennials should be more along the lines of those born from 1984 - 1999. I think research done on that group in 2016 would bear different results and conclusions.
    crucial
crucial info and insight for understanding the millennial generation. highly recommended for pastors and church staff. Parents too! especially!
    A Great Read
A very readable analysis of the ins & outs of the millennial generation! The authors are able to clearly layout the markers of & tips to reach the largest generation in the United States.
    Slanted views!
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Evangelical Christians looking to validate their world view
What could Thom S. Rainer and Jess Rainer have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I wish they had stuck to reporting the research instead of infusing the book with their personal stories. Over and over again, they make the book about being "christian" or "other". Even the questions stilt the research toward Christian views.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Even the tone of the narration seems judgmental.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    The research seems valid.

In Jesus in the Present Tense, Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe explores the I AM statements of Godfrom His burning bush conversation with Moses, to His powerful reassurances to the Israelites, to Jesuss startling claim to be the Light of the World.
Many Christians find themselves mired in past regrets or future fears, but the name of God itself reminds readers that God wants them to live in the present. The more readers understand and apply Gods I AM statements from the Old and New Testaments, the more they will realize Gods peace and joy. Then they will be free to live, serve, and know God more richly in the present tensewhich is just where He wants them to be.

A must read for those seeking to know Christ.
I first heard of the author because Dr. Charles Stanley would quote him often. This book uses a great many Bible verses to paint a clear picture on the mind of God so that anyone who comes in spirit and in truth to seek a personal relationship can have access to worship, wisdom, and fellowship with the God of the Universe.
Many good authors write good opinion books on the Bible. This book uses the Bible as an opinion piece on itself. This to a believer like me is music to my ears.
"I AM," Jesus said, and He IS
Our Lord tells us throughout His Word many of the various ways He works in our lives through the roles He fills: I AM the Good Shepherd, the Bread of Life, the Light of the World, the Resurrection and the Life, and many, many more. Jesus in the Present Tense is a wonderful reminder and study that shows us that Jesus is all we need. Warren W. Wiersbe masterfully takes each "I AM" statement and lays it out in a clear, understandable, and thrilling way. Be encouraged by Jesus in the Present Tense. He is not the I WAS; He is I AM!
    Vintage Wiersbe
Dr. Wiersbe takes the reader on a journey of the I Am's of Jesus Christ in a way that makes them come alive. He introduces us to new insights about our Savior. As always he clearly makes the Scriptures come alive. I highly recommend this book.

    Publisher's Summary:
Weve been upside down for so long that wrong has become right and right is considered foolish. Cultural disorientation has become pandemic. Children act like adults and adults act like children. Mother Earth is worshiped but motherhood is despised. Free speech may get you free room and board in jail. Life is denied and death is affirmed. These contradictions are neither without precedent nor cure. We can reorient ourselves and once again discover that standing upright on our own two feet is normal and natural. Good and evil, right and wrong, tragic and heroicthese were at one time well-defined terms in our cultural lexicon. It requires an unashamedly bold and independent observer to point out just how upside down we have become. Rod Parsley not only describes a culture that has lost its way but also provides a way forwardupright and facing true north.

    Wild & Wonderful
Rod Parsley tells it like it is here - as per usual. I found myself laffin' out loud ... until I realized I was looking in a mirror deep into My Own Soul. You almost don't mind being shown the truth about yourself with Parsley's pleasing delivery. Almost.
Surprising how little we really know things.
Rod Parsley shares so much that is contraversial. Looks at many different contempory views, whether you follow it , know them, or have experienced them.
I didnt get too much out of this, as it certainly showed the absurdity of our society and views.
    Spot-on, biblical social commentary
This is the follow-up to "Culturally Incorrect," a New York Times best-seller. It maintains the same laser focus on our culture's decline as it races away from biblical principles. The approach, however, is much different. While CI could be (and has been) written at the level of a college textbook, this is much more informally written, with great flashes of wit. Highly recommended for anyone who cares about where we're going as a nation and how we can fix what's wrong.

In a world where the ugliness of rage and retaliation are driving the story line, Unconditional? offers the beauty, reconciliation, and total restoration of forgiveness the way Jesus taught us to live it. More than just another biblical exposition, this audio book begins with the horror of the Holocaust as it explores what forgiveness meansand how far it should goin the real world of murder, rape, child abuse, genocide, and other atrocities. With unusual honesty, compassion, and depth, Zahnd incorporates some of the most compelling and difficult thoughts on the subject from historys writers, philosophers, and theologiansalways returning to the example Jesus gave us with his life and his death.

    Hope
He made the Bible relevant for today's world. It changes my mind set to have hope. With hope I am no longer crazy trying to figure things out in my mind.
    The essence of Scripture
This seems an excellent articulation of the essential core of Jesus' aims and purpose and where all New Testament study should begin.
    Excellent
Highlights the reconciling work of Christ on the cross and ultimately our part in bringing the kingdom of heaven here on Earth
    Unforgivably Redundant
This may the best book on forgiveness I've ever come across. The biblical/theological view is excellent. Illustrations outstanding in many places. Sadly, it seems as if Brian was forced to have a certain number of words by the publisher and the result is the most redundant book I have ever come across. One could take half of the copy out (probably more) and have the exact same book - only better. This seems to be the trend more and more in book publishing. Time for the industry to enter the 21st century.
100 % The key to true peace, joy and freedom
I will forever be changed by this book. I will listen to it over and over. Everyone in this world needs the peace, truth, joy and freedom it reveals. A great treasure!

Length: 4 hrs and 58 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-15-10
    Publisher: christianaudio.com
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 47 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
Turn on a cable news show or pick up any news magazine, and you get the impression that Christian America is on its last leg. The once dominant faith is now facing rapidly declining church attendance, waning political influence, and an abysmal public perception. More than 76% of Americans self-identify as Christians, but many today are ashamed to carry the label. While many Christians are bemoaning their faiths decline, Gabe Lyons is optimistic that Christianitys best days are yet to come.
In the wake of the stunning research from his best-selling book unChristian, which revealed the growing disenchantment among younger generations with Christians, Lyons has witnessed the beginnings of a new iteration of the faith. Marked by Lyons brutal honesty and unvarying generosity, Lyons exposes a whole movement of Christians - Evangelicals, mainline Protestants, Orthodox, Pentecostals, and others - who desire to be a force for restoration, even as they proclaim the Christian Gospel. They want the label Christian to mean something good, intelligent, authentic, and beautiful.
The next generation of Christians, Lyons argues, embodies six revolutionary characteristics: "When Christians incorporate these characteristics throughout the fabric of their lives, a fresh, yet orthodox way of being Christian springs forth. The death of yesterday becomes the birth of a great tomorrow. The end of an era becomes a beautiful new beginning. In this way, the end of Christian America becomes good news for Christians."
Both a celebration and a reckoning, The Next Christians combines current-day models and relevant research with stories of a new generation of Christian leaders. If you are worried by what you see transpiring around you, this book will take you on a surprising social exploration in hopes that you too will restore confidence in your faith.

    Lite-Brite and Salty!
Despite the play on words (and spelling) that's the kind of world we should be leaving behind as Christians, especially as next Christians... one that has been lit up and salted.
I've always thought that if we could boil God's occupational responsibilities down to two requirements, they would be to 1) Redeem His creation and 2) Restore His creation. Seems He is always doing one or the other ... even if not always obvious at times.
In "The Next Christians", author Gabe Lyons makes note of the passage in Luke 4 where Jesus is quoting ancient texts that proclaim His annointing to proclaim good news to the poor, fredom for the prisoners, to set the oppressed free and to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. Lyons says "In other words, Jesus is saying, 'Enough of what is; I see things in terms of how they ought to be, and I'm here to do something about it'. Conclusion? So are the next Christians.
Next Christians are provoked to do something about changing their world, and not always with a religious slogan or identity posted somewhere. Next Christians serve for the common good, they join together in community to make a difference instead of isolating themselves.

    Title: Untamed
Subtitle: Reactivating a Missional Form of Discipleship
    Author: Alan Hirsch, Debra Hirsch
    Narrator: Adam Verner
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 11 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-22-10
    Publisher: christianaudio.com
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 32 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
Discipleship is costly. Are we willing to critique and even challenge much we've been taught for the sake of the kingdom? For this is the radical nature of the discipleship to which Jesus calls us. He did not allow the outside culture to hold him captive; instead, he established the kingdom of God and turned the world on its head. Jesus was untamed, and he calls his church to be the same.
In this provocative and compelling book, internationally known missiologists Alan and Debra Hirsch overthrow culturized understandings of theology and culture, and cast a vision for a distinctly mission-shaped way of living the Christian life.
Written for any Christian serious about the issue of discipleship, Untamed covers such topics as church, humans as bearers of the image of God, family life, culture, and sexuality. Through it all, they seek to answer the question, "How are we to think and live day to day as followers of Jesus?" Each chapter ends with suggested practices to help readers begin to live out the book's principles, as well as questions for group discussion.

    Uncomfortable Reality
I needed this important book. Though theologically conservative, I am edgy in Missional practice...at least I thought I was before this book. You will not agree with all that this book says, but when that happens, ask why. Your answers might surprise you. Regardless, this is a must read.
Deep insight and saddening reality, well written.
Thick and rich in authenticity! This book challenges our present day understanding of this man Jesus.
    Love the book
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would absolutely recommend this book. I would recommend the audiobook to those who want to read but have too much travel time in their lives.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Untamed?
The most memorable moments were the discussions on God and orgasms.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The narration was a bit deliberately 'deep and thoughtful' and occasionally dragged down the heart of the book into a monotonous plod. Someone who walked in while I was listening commented that it sounded like a brainwashing session.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I did not listen to this in one sitting, as the book is over 8 hours long, but I turned it on during commute times, and laundry-folding and distribution times.
    Any additional comments?
The narrator consistently and distressingly mispronounced 'nuclear'.

The Spirituality of God's Love Practically Applied
The Spirituality of God's Love Practically Applied in Heart and Deed
The Holy Spirit has deeply moved me through the teaching that He is expressing through the author's heart, who reads his book with wonderful expression. I believe that the Spirit has anointed this expression of God's truth, so whether your heart is soft and pliable or hard in areas, I believe this book will help you very significantly in the ongoing transformation of your heart to greater Christlikeness, as Jesus intended when he responded to his disciples inquiry, "Teach us to pray."
I've been to Larry Lee's prayer seminar on praying the Lord's prayer for an hour at a time, which is a very good systematic teaching. This book shares with you the warm beating heart of our Lord, as expressed in each line of His prayer. Put the systematic together with the warmth of Christ's heart and I believe the benefit of the Lord's prayer is multiplied 5,000 times.
I pray that you are blessed as much as I have been by the Holy Spirit expressing through this book, the love God desires us to share with each other, that we may learn to express God's love toward others through our attitudes and our very lives, as Christ intended by teaching us how to pray and have a right heart. Amen!
    Well Done!!!
R.T. Kendalls voice is an encouraging teach voice to listen to; convicting, too.
This message of the Lord's Prayer made me think twice the words I pray. I thought of where my heart is in my personal walk with God. And made me want to make sure I am living faithfully unto God.
