Silverlight: The Arcan, Book II

Product arrived in just a few days, book is in excellent condition and the story, a sequel to a title already in our library, has enthralled our teenaged son. We would not hesitate to use this seller again.

No exclaimation

While it's sad that there is no follow up book, there's probably a reason. The reason is probably that this is the worst thing I have ever seen with Morgan Llywelyn's name on it (Sorry, never read Michael Scott before). She is one of my favourite authors and EVERYTHING else by her that I have read has been magnificent. This repetive plot of boy designated by prophesy must save the world has become tiresome. The Wheel of Time has stretched into oblivion, with the Sword of Truth following afterwards, and it was done 30 years ago with Star Wars. The writer also repeats passages over and over, almost as if to drag the reader out of their sleep and remind tham what they reading. While these passages are appreciated at the start of a sequel, I only want to hear ONCE per book that Gwynne lost her family and is so sad etc etc. Anyway, I highly suggest Llywelyn's other works (Bard, Druids, Finn MacCool, The Red Branch, The Horse Goddess) but The Arcana Series isn't even worth half-price book cost.

There is good fantasy, and then there is this

I have no idea who Michael Scott is, but he should never work with Morgan Llewelyn again. She (Llewelyn) is one of the finest authors of fantasy and historical fiction I have ever read. Having studied in Ireland for half a year, I was able to garner a real appreciation for her books.

This however, is the fantasy equivalent of the worst sort of romance novel. It is trite and unoriginal. The characters are ridiculous and I feel no sympathy for them. When an author has to tell you how they feel, you know they are not doing a good job. I constantly felt like I was reading a psycho-analysis (and a poorly written one at that) instead of a book. SHOW, don't tell! One of the first rules in every creative writing class. Show me how they are feeling through their actions and their words. Don't tell me. Ugh.

If you want real fantasy, try George Martin, read Neil Gaiman, try Robert Jordan, (well at least the first few books). Read any of Morgan Llewelyn's other books such as Lion of Ireland, Bard, or Finn MacCool. But don't read this. It is a sophomoric fantasy that could have been written by anyone in middleschool. Michael Scott, whoever you are, stay away from Llewelyn, do not pollute her writing anymore. Thank god there are no more sequels to this garbage.

Wow! Really great.... but where's the sequel?

I was really impressed by this book. It's excellent fantasy and deserves to be read. I've only read two books by Llywelyn (the Arcana, books 1&2), but the next time I go to the library, I'm going to check out a lot more of them. Only one question: Where's the sequel? I hate it when a book leaves you hanging and there's no sequel.

The Gods Walk Amongst The Mortals...

This book was definately a "Must Read"!

I have read probably 20 DL novels, and this was in the top 10. This story centers on "Ayrx", direct descendant from the legandary "Kaz", during the chaos war.

This book was a page turner, with some amazing battles, in fact, lots, and lots, of battles. The minotaurs as usual fought with themselves over the virtues of Honor, and Bravery, and as usual, there is another group trying to control them as slave solders..this time that group being the Knights of Tahkisis.

The Minotaurs are fighting to save their homeland from (1) The Knights of Tahkisis , and (2) The Chaos Creatures, and at the center of all of the fighting, and conquering, and politcs, is Aryx, the reluctant Hero thrust into a situation he doesn't want any part of, but The Gods "Sargonnas", and "Kiri-Jolith", simply won't have it without him.

The Pros:

(1)Sargonnas Appears in Mortal Flesh for quite some time, accompanied by the treacherous "Sword of Tears"

(2)Kaz Makes Several Appearences

(3)Kiri-Jolith Makes one appearance in mortal flesh, and one in a dream.

(4)There are some awesome battles

(5)Some very Memorable Characters

The Cons:

(1)Sargonnas seems a bit like a tired wimp, who leaves more questions than he answers

(2)Kiri-Jolith leaves more questions than he answers

(3)Kaz leaves more questions than he answers

(4)Doesn't it seem that gods, and the spirits of legends couldn't give a straight answer if they wanted to?

(5)Several Characters who you grow attached to throughout the story die.

(6)Throughought the book the Knights of Tahkisis keep speaking about a "Great Vision", and it is never really explained.

(7)The Minotaurs and knights keep battling the chaos creaturs, and never really win.

Of minotaurs and gods

I initially expected that I wouldn't like this book as it was based on the minotaur society (and I'm used to DragonLance focusing more on the human/elf/dwarf groups), but it was unexpectedly good. I've read a Richard Knaak DL book before and didn't like it, but I guess he has grown as an author. A worthwhile read by any DranonLance fan.

Brooks is one of the best authors. This series has Great characters and Great plot.

reader needs much more practice

While Teri does an excellent job with the voices of different characters, she is terrible when it comes to normal reading. Many statements she sounded like she finished them as a question. There were often times when you couldn't actually tell that she finished a sentence and started another, though she wasn't as bad in this book as she was in the first of the series.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Walls of Air to be better than the print version?

I only wish that Sam Elliott could have voiced the wizard. Teri did a fantastic job and at times I wish I could have added sound effects or slowed her reading a bit. I savored this book listening to chapters over and over. Thank you so much.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Gil. She was the main character. Complicated and a driving force for the plot. And as she tapped into her alternate resources, I grew with her.

What about Teri Clark Lindens performance did you like?

Teri was fantastic. I was amazed at how she could keep the voices straight and the range in her vocals. I would love to see her help produce the movie. Her knowledge of the characters and expression was awesome. The Dark came alive, I could imagine them like many blockbuster movie characters.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Good stuff

The narration works a lot better at 2x speed -- I'm not sure why it's so slow. Story is as good as ever.

Dragons rock!

After years of waiting, the book finally came available as an Audiobook. Since I already have the book on Kindle (and as a hard copy), Audible.com let me buy the audiobook for just $4.59, a bargain I was delighted to snatch. A steal!

After being terribly disappointed in the recording of Kevin Hearne's Hunted (disappointed enough to ask for my money back), I was delighted this book was every bit as good as I hoped it would be. Maybe better. Narrated by Claire Christie and Jeremy Arthur, I was (again) surprised at how much more I get from an audiobook than from print. I think it's because I read very fast. When I listen, the pace is that of human speech, perhaps slightly slower than normal conversation. I absorb more of the story listening than reading.

The dual narration works well. Aiden and Lara having their own voices and perspectives is appropriate. Usually I don't like multiple narrators, but I like them in this book.

Song of the Beast is Carol Berg's is a standalone book. I wish it were a series. I have it on good authority that another story (short story -- not an entire book) will be coming out based in the same world, though not featuring the same characters. I would prefer a book or two, but I will happily settle for whatever I can get.

If Carol Berg writes it, I will read it. I think she's brilliant and not nearly as appreciated as she deserves.

I came to love her dragons. There is a faint whiff of Pern to these dragons, except no dragonrider of Pern would so mistreat a dragon. I'm a sucker for dragons. Any dragon. And these are fabulous dragons.

I found the story's characters well-drawn and three-dimensional. Many relationships are between different species because, unlike her other books, not all characters are human. The relationships are logical extensions of the cultures from which they come. The slightly abrasive relationships between differing humanoids is fundamental.

The main character -- Aidan McAllister has been imprisoned and tortured. His beautiful voice has been silenced, his hands brutally destroyed. His music, which offered solace and hope to war-torn Elyria, is gone. The god in whom he never lost faith and nurtured him and his music since he was a child seems to have abandoned him.

Yet no one has yet told him what his crime was. He has no idea what earned him such punishment. He has emerged from prison a broken man, battered beyond endurance, wanting nothing more than peace and safety ... and the end of pain. Having lost himself, he must find his way back to himself, remember who he was because that's the key to what happened to him, what is happening to the world and the dragons. There is, of course, a beautiful woman.

Through it all, Aiden remains a gentle soul in a cruel world, a man to whom violence is abhorrent no matter what was done to him. He's neither vengeful nor mean. Music is his magic.

I wish there were a sequel to this book. I wanted to know what happened next, how this society evolves.

This reading is better than the last book, but more practice is required. Still some doubt as to how she finishes her sentences.

One of my Favorites from the 80's

What did you love best about The Armies of Daylight?

The twists in the plot and the depth of the characters. Though short and fairly simple compared to more modern trilogies or series books Ms Hambly did a marvelous job of revealing her characters and keeping parts of the story new and interesting.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Armies of Daylight?

To avoid a spoiler - the interruption of Rudy and Alde's after dance kiss during the Mid-Winter festival.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Her narration was stilted, as if she must strain to c o r r e c t l y pronounce e a c h syllable of every word. Then there were her "voices" - if she strained to pronounce "it" and "a" and "the" and "and" - her voices were maddening! Eeaacchh oonnee wwwhoo haaad aann ac'ceeent - had his/her words slowed and dragged out so that every sentence took twice or more as long as necessary to pronounce. While speaking in this way can be and is used to indicate a condescending voice, doing so for every word every sentence was horrible to listen to! ! ! If the only way you can do a brittish or Scottish or welsh accent is in slow motion then toss the accents and just read! a little genuine inflection during an argument or a joke would have been nice - Barbara Hambly did very well in her descriptions of voices, "dry and scratchy" "velvety and smooth" "screetch" etc. Ms Clark may as well have used monotone as the painstakenly pronounced sentences she tried to use. Especially since every woman and man had basically the same voice (although she did do a fairly consistent job with Rudy's voice and Gil's without the artificial slowness).

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, to do so would have required abridgement and I prefer full text books and audiobooks.

Will you be adding the next two books that were added onto the series? While not precisely part of the trilogy, The Icefalcon's Quest and The Mother of Winter are written in the land of Darwath and I would like to hear those as well. Especially if you can find a decent narrator.

Finally in Audio!

On the surface, Bitterwood is a typical fantasy revenge thriller. Bitterwood, the main character, is on a mission to kill all the dragons in the world. The dragons rule the earth, and keep humans as slaves or pets. Plus, they killed his family, so what kind of fantasy character would he be if he didnt vow to wipe them off the face of the earth. So, for years he carried out his revenge, until, the rumors say, he died with a band of rebels in the Southern Rebellion. Then, years later, during a competition to determine the next heir to the throne, the Kings son is slaughtered, his dead body found riddled with Bitterwoods signature dragon feathered arrows. That of course, pisses the King off. So, he decides the best way to deal with Bitterwood, and those who harbor him, is to wipe humanity off the map. While many dragons find his genocidal policy abhorrent, few are willing to stand up to the King.

Maxey piles layers and layers on top what seems like a typical fantasy story. He builds one of the most intriguing Post Apocalyptic worlds I have seen in a while, yet, doesnt dump it all on your head in one big scoop, but doses it out expertly, changing the story both subtly and drastically. By the time you reach the satisfying ending, you arent reading the book that you thought you were. One thing that I found intriguing in this book is the dragons portrayal. Not being a huge dragon fan, I had no biases or expectations on how dragons should act, yet, if I had to guess, it wouldnt have been like this. What struck me early was the Anthropomorphism. These dragons displayed some shockingly human traits and emotions that I wasnt sure how to react. Was this just bad writing? I highly doubted it, being the book was so well written. The dragon characters, no matter how human like, were well developed personas. If fact, their complexity, and political savvy rivaled many of the human characters that show up in the Big Fat Fantasies like Martins A Song of Ice and Fire. Yet, as the world became more and more revealed, the dragons become more and more understandable, and by the end, these dragons were exactly what they should be in this tale. Dont make the mistake of comparing these dragons to what dragons should be. Their character is what is important, not being able to fit them into comfortable stereotypes. Fans of Stephen Kings The Dark Tower, and David Gemmells Jerusalem man series should cheer this offering by James Maxey. He fills a much needed void in the world of Action Sci/Fi Fantasy.

So, did I love Dave Thompsons narration with the heartfelt joy of angels and comfy pillows? Well.No. But, I liked it I swear, I did.

Terrible Narration

I have tried three times to listen to this book, and have not been able to make it beyond about an hour or so.

I was very excited by the premise of the story, and was looking forward to more books by Barbara Hambly.

But the narration is so abysmal that I cannot finish the book. Teri Clark Linden is the absolute worst narrator I have listened to in all my time as an audiobook listener.

She over-enunciates every single word and gives everything the same emphasis. She can only read about 4 words before having to take a breath, and there are odd pauses in all the wrong places. She prounounces the indefinite pronoun "a" as a long vowel (as in the first letter of the alphabet) and it's like biting on tinfoil. Other words are mispronounced, and it makes for an abysmal listening experience.

The only slightly better narration is when she is using a mock-English accent (voice of the wizard), but that only rises the performance out of the mire for a short time.

I am prepared to give Barbara Hambly another chance, but I will never listen to anything by this narrator again. I am going to return or delete the book.

Worst audiobook I've ever heard.

I first read Time of the Dark when I was in high school and I enjoyed the story greatly, the premise was interesting, the plot was well conceived, and the characters were enjoyable. As a fan of audiobooks, I have waited for this series to come to audio for a while. Sadly, when the series finally became available, the performance was so miserable that I can't bring myself to purchase the second and third books.

This audiobook can best be described as cruel and unusual punishment for the ears. Linden reads with zero emotion, horrible character voices, and a punctuation and pronunciation that would suggest trying to teach a recalcitrant child with a lisp how to read. There is so little emotional inflection that terror and joy could be the same thing. When Linden reads as a character, she seems to choose the worst possible voice. Ingold, possibly the most important character in the book, is meant to be a strong older man with a great deal of command and power while maintaining a normally soft spoken, kind demeanor. The voice given to him in the audiobook would be perfect for a dying old man with laryngitis who is trying to speak his last wishes. Rudy, another main character who is portrayed as a biker, artist, and semi-drifter from California is given a voice that seems more like what you would expect for a Virginian farmer with a bad case of southern accent.

Not until you see the red of the beasts eye...

The conclusion to the series "The Threat from the Sea" was about as epic of a sea battle as you can get from the Forgotten Realms series. The sea beast, the mastermind and driving force behind all the invasions and attacks since the beginning, finally makes his presence known and attempts to dispose of the meddling fools that are interfering with its plans.

Odom does a laudable job wrapping up this series based on the high seas of the Realms. The main characters, who each had "limitations" from book one, have finally grown into their own skin and know what they can bring to the fight. The enemy, realizing that their assault isn't progressing as expected make one last ditch effort to finally see their plan take hold. And in the end, as it is in most hero based fantasy novels, the main characters triumph. Some sacrifices are made along the way - but nothing of such epic proportions comes without cost.

Overall, the series was a great read. While published over 10yrs ago, the story is still entertaining and sheds some amazing detail on a very virgin topic in the Realms - the coastal menace. If you enjoy reading about Forgotten Realms, you will certainly enjoy this excellent trilogy from Mel Odom.

MAIN CHARACTER IS SOOO LAME

Honestly, you're probably thinking to yourself that at some point the main character has to quit whining and be a man...nope. he whines and mopes and acts like a loser for the whole book. sorry. pretty weak Mr. Odom, pretty weak.

Kind of runs out of ideas and becomes very predictable, I think this series has enough story for two books as three was one too many.

A decent ending to a great triology...

All four (one short story book) of the books in this series have been written very well. Congratulations to Mel. With out giving away too much the antagonist was very exciting; I was usually reading just to get to the points about him. Our Hero on the other hand seemed rather undeveloped during the first two novels. The third novel did slightly better. All in all a great book. I will most definitely buy anymore concerning Jherek.

Excellent ending to a good series

This book is the culmination of a wonderful series. This may be the best trilogy since "The Dark Elf Trilogy." This book was definitely more action packed than the previous books but all those things that were pestering you finally are revealed, like who has been speaking to Jherek all these years and why, who Iakhovas is, and more. The Taleweaver's tale comes to an end in dramatic fasion, and I am glad that the ending is different than it was in the module because if it was the same then I would have known the ending and that would have spoiled the book.

I found the pace of the book more along the lines of the first, which I liked (the second book was to slow and little was accomplished).
