Up there with the classics

I love this story. It has to be my favourite Binchy novel. The narration is wonderful - totally engaging. I don't need to say anymore about it. It's brilliant!

I would have enjoyed the book to have ended differently, I felt like the ends of the stories didn't really tie up nicely, I was very surprised when I realised it was actually the end of the book and not just the end of a chapter.

A fabulous holiday listen

Kate Binchey's narration never fails she has a wonderful knack of bringing the characters to life and making them very believeable. Whilst the storyline is fairly light it manages to hold the listeners attention to the very end.

Rabbit from Start to Finish

I spent the summer listening to all four Rabbit books (having read the first two when they first were published years ago). They are wonderful books and in a small way historical novels in that they make reference to real events. Updike has invented characters who do annoying and stupid (and sometimes awful) things, but who are not annoying to read about. I found myself very absorbed with the characters. My husband has been listening too and we find ourselves talking about what has happened to Rabbit and Janice (sort of like contemporary discussions about 24 at the water cooler in the office).

I don't know if the books would appeal to younger people. As a person who is about 10 years younger than Rabbit, I found it fun and interesting to follow his life.

I think Mr. Morey's reading is wonderful. He has created subtle voices for the characters and his reading brings the stories to life in a way that reading would not. Highly recommended.

Good book - bored narrated

Rabbit remembered is the latest compendium of John Updike the famous writer. But this edition seems to me done by an truely bored narrator. It seems to be better to read the book to get the stylistic subtlety.

She Had It Coming is Definitely All Right!!

Mary Monroe is a great storyteller! This book is the lastest in her ability to weave together characer development and great dialogue. Ms. Monroe is great at descriptive storytelling and plot development. She is graphic at talking about benign deception, getting caught, developing remorse, and having to accept one's fate. This is a great read for everyone who wants it all but is doing it because 1) they don't know how to say no, 2) they want to feel good, 3) they don't know how to stop, and 4) they are in over their head. This is a great book and is highly recommended!

Classic semi-ghetto fiction

Not a bad book. It's definately an interesting read from Ms. Patricia R. Floyd, who is always great. However, the book has a few things in it that just seem implausible, and overly dramatic, but that's usually par for the course for novels like these. Very entertaining.

I enjoyed this story

I like this story. At times it seemed like Lo didn't care about but herself. I always liked Floyd and there was always an amount of pity that I had for him. But Paul was just an ass for no reason. You could always tell he looked down on her. The ending left much to be desired but overall it was a good story

Serious not typical Nantucket read!!

No, it was a serious topic while written well but not an easy listen if you've been a victim of rape.

Barbara brings life to the story that I wouldn't get reading.

I found the topic of rape a little difficult to listen to; it was quite serious even though very well written and a good book; I think I didn't realize it was a harder read than most. I think the clarity of this subject was excellent. I found the emotions of how they kept the family as husband/wife together interesting. Combined families can tear a relationship apart but this family struggles to stay together.

Any additional comments?

Definitely not a predictable book. Nancy Thayer is an amazing writer! Beware though this is not a light read.

Don't call her Tugboat Annie

I enjoyed reading this book, it's an interesting story - I certainly felt like shaking our tugboat captain to knock some sense into her or kicking her a swift one in the butt - one stupid decision after another but it was her incredibly poor judgement that got her into such dire straits and that added to the tension and drama. I went on to read the next books in the series and now I am on book 4 - I think she's finally cluing in but I haven't finished it yet. I like the characters and the setting and the stories are action packed and perversely I like yelling at my book "You stupid woman!"...I will go on to read more.

An action packed fun read, though not exactly believable.

I liked this book, and it is loaded with enough action to keep you turning pages, late into the night. Sechelle is an interesting character; she is a conflicted woman running a salvage business, in the Forida Keys. One of her jobs turns up a dead girl, whose missing (presumed dead) boyfriend is nowhere to be found. When police discover the boyfriends prior relationship with the Sechelle, she becomes the prime suspect. My only problem with the book, is that Sechelles response to many of the life-threatening situation she finds herself in (and the book is loaded with them), only makes sense if she is a superhero or harboring a death wish. If you can suspend disbelief and like a lot of action in your reading you will absolutely enjoy this book. I also enjoyed learning a little something about the salvage business, an interesting vocation, that I had never come across before, or even considered.

Surface Tension, a fun ride.

I don't normally read books about the sea, but this book grabbed my attention. I'm glad it did. Seychelle is easy to like, her character was well drawn out. I wouldn't think a tug boat could be run with only one person. What I really liked was that one scene seemlessly led to another. I didn't wonder how we got from one place to another.

Good piercing explanations; lots of so-so filler

This book stays breezy and reasonably entertaining. Being an Enron junkie, I would not miss it. And from that vantage, I enjoyed it a lot. It walks us around the physical place and through the details and trivia (some weirdly Orwellian) an Enronian would know. Then it does swoop occasionally to interesting deeper views and overviews, glimpses much deeper into the heart of darkness, the real sickness of the culture and especially the (avowedly) atrocious foreign projects, mostly as spoken by a more senior acquaintance "Mister Blue" while the latter was drinking $50 double shots of top-of-the-line booze and presumably staring darkly into the void. Here one will get glimpses and hear summations I hadn't heard elsewhere. I had I thought of that phrase "heart of darkness" right before the author quoted Conrad's book.

The end sort of peters out as we join the parade of terminated employees in a not-atypical dreary wandering away from the scene, into job fairs and wasting time online. The only special thing is, this guy was mistakenly left in the payroll and had access to messages and the physical place, so more is revealed as the defunct "Death Star" spins into bankruptcy outer space.

Stating the stock price and volume, and big events, as the author's personal adventure progressed day by day, works well. As far his participation in anything, he was developing a financial risk management product along the lines of bankruptcy insurance (but not a CDS, apparently) that didn't make it to prime time in his tenure.

Compelling companion to your Enron library

A Funny and Thought-provoking Tale of Human Nature

Okay, I know this might sound weird, but if Dostoyevsky were alive today, Steve Toltz could probably teach him a thing or two about the nature of misanthropy. Still, A Fraction of the Whole manages to push the envelope of absurd to the very limits of transgressional fiction, while remaining humorous enough to sustain most reader's attention spans. The thing is, Toltz's characters are so incredibly hard to sympathize with, that you're likely to find yourself trying hard to understand how they are a reflection of humanity as a whole. And from this effort, the truth of their "every man" identities becomes glaringly obvious.

Anyone who reads this story is likely to be both disgusted at the characters and reflected within them, all the while laughing despite this. Oh, and if you only like stories that wrap up nice and neat and fall into your lap during the death throws of their denouements — don't read this. However, if you're comfortable with the fact that life doesn't resolve itself like a Polaroid picture, then sit back, strap on a comfy pair of headphones, and enjoy one of the quirkiest tales you're likely to feast your ears on told by a pair of truly talented narrators whose performances are of rare quality.

Beautifully written, wonderful characters

This is a beautifully written book with richly drawn characters. The Dean family will take you on a wild ride around the world, and as unlikely as they and their lives are, this book is so well written you'll believe every bit of it. Clever, ironic, dark, and absolutely worth reading.

40% Great

I loved 40% of this book! It tells the story of a father and his son who are both extremely odd and have a very dysfunctional relationship. Most of the book is told from the point of view of the son (the 60% I did not like) and 40% is wonderfully told by the father. The reader of the father portion is much better than the reader of the son portions. If you take the time to listen to it, there are a lot of moments of pleasure, however you have to wade through a lot of muck to get there.

Charming and Fun

The book starts off a bit slowly, but you're soon drawn in to a world of villainy, deceit, and hysterically bad parenting. The narration captures each of the characters in a way that I think might not have been as carefully presented--had I just read the book. In short, one of the reasons that I listen to audio books. First class narrators, and a witty, character-driven story.

Laugh-out-loud funny

A Fraction of the Whole is a sprawling, big and baggy, super funny first novel by the Australian author Steve Toltz. The story goes back and forth between the two narrators, a father and son, telling their own stories of their lives. The father goes back to his childhood and the brother who becomes his nemesis. The son tells more of the later story, but they switch off nicely throughout the book. The ending gets a bit bizarre. Great narration.

Not very modern collection

Most of these stories seem to have been written at least 20 years ago, perhaps even longer. They were mostly a type of entertainment that you used to find in the Saturday Evening Post back in the 50's and 60's - breezy, light and eminently forgettable. With so many excellent stories being written within the last 10-15 years, it's really a shame.

But it's hard to tell much about them because of the way Audible (or whoever produced this audio collection) presents the stories. There's no table of contents available, so you don't know what's coming next or even what the authors or titles are, except for the major names advertised (Lessing and Murikami). When you're listening, there is no way to skip from one story to the next - and final insult - no gap between the readings. I would at least like a slight pause to ponder the final line before hearing the title and author of the next story, but it's like some idiot technician just spliced the stories together just to save space. Shameful!

Great short readings!

Lots of wonderful prose and intriguing characters! Really good anthology! I would highly recommend this. You will not be disappointed.

Excellent collection of contemporary stories

These stories are well written and interesting despite being light years apart in theme, characterizations and story telling. Very enjoyable.

Bland and poorly spliced

The only story I really liked was Haruki Murakami's. The rest were all British authors writing blandly about infidelity and divorce. Any chance each story had of leaving me with the spine-tingle of insight at the end was mercilessly squashed by splicing the next story's title immediately on top of the finishing line of the last. Not worth the time.

Addicted to this Series

I'd never heard of Rebecca Shaw or her books. But because I absolutely adore the Thrush Green and Fairacre books of Miss Read, a friend recommended Rebecca Shaw's books. I got started and couldn't put them down. I'm fascinated by the characters and their stories. Very different from Miss Read but very enjoyable and more realistic because the happy findings come with a lot more conflict and drama. I began the series out of sequence with Country Wives and then A Country Affair, then Country Lovers and now Country Passions. I'm so into these books I can hardly wait to read what happens next. Of course I've already ordered the last two books of the series.

A Country Bore

As I loved the James Herriot books, I had high expectations of this latest foray into a country vet's existence, albeit in more modern times. Instead I found this book to be poorly written; the plot was lame and predictable, the dialogue was stilted and unbelievable, the characters one dimensional and the few actual vet stories seemed to draw heavily from the Herriot books. The Australian vet Scott was as stereotypical as he could possibly be and the reformation of Kate's creepy, stalking suitor seemed extremely unlikely.

I have no intention of reading any of the other books in this series.
