    Publisher's Summary:
This is a story from The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, Volume II collection.
In the last six stories written by Conan Doyle featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, the duo face some of their most challenging cases. In "The Adventure of the Illustrious Client", Holmes puts his own life in danger as he tries to cut short a young girls infatuation with the notorious wife-murderer Baron Gruner. Why is Mrs. Maberley offered a handsome price for the Three Gables, provided she leaves at once and takes nothing with her? Even in his retirement, Holmess skills are called upon, as he follows a trail of death on the Sussex coast in "The Adventure of the Lions Mane".
    Editorial Reviews:
The young and innocent Violet has fallen in love with a bad seed, Baron Adelbert Gruner, who may very well be a murderer. Sherlock Holmes will get to the bottom of it, though. Nobody performs the Holmes canon like David Timson. Passionate about the genre, Timson has recorded dozens of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories. With impeccable diction and pacing, Timson shows his experience. He captures Watson's smart, cultured tone. Suspenseful music also helps to set the mood. Listeners have plenty of choice when it comes to their Sherlock Holmes fix; however, Timson's faithful productions set him apart from the rest.

    Publisher's Summary:
This is a story from The Return of Sherlock Holmes III (Unabridged Selections) collection.
Once again Arthur Conan Doyle presents a series of cases which baffle the police, but are no match for Sherlock Holmes and his trusty companion Dr. Watson.
In "Black Peter", the peace of rural Sussex is disturbed by the discovery of a seafarer's body pinned to the wall of his hut with a harpoon. In the "Golden Pince-Nez", a young man is found dead clutching a pair of spectacles, yet he had perfect sight. Who is the short-sighted murderer?
In the "Missing Three-Quarter", Holmes takes on a novel case when a Rugby player goes missing the day before a major University match. A woman tied to a chair; her husband clubbed to death with a poker; a case of robbery with violence? But all is not what it seems in the case of the "Abbey Grange".
The series ends with the "Second Stain" where a top secret document that could lead Britain into war goes missing. Holmes is put to the test to save his country as well as his reputation.
    Editorial Reviews:
When a surly, hard-drinking former shipmaster named Peter Carey is found harpooned through the chest in his outhouse, novice police inspector Stanley Hopkins enlists the help of Englands most celebrated detective to get to the bottom of the heinous crime in Sir Arthur Conan Doyles 1904 Sherlock Holmes mystery, which is superbly performed by David Timson, who ratchets up the tension of this clever whodunit full of twists and turns with his impassioned performance along with brilliantly capturing the unique chemistry between the iconic detective and his loyal counterpart.

    An interesting short story
An interesting short story of Mr. Holmes solving a murder of a rather disagreeable old sailor with the aid of a young detective.
    Another nice plot!
This is a good story with a nice plot: Forest Row in the Weald is the scene of a gruesome harpoon murder, and a young police inspector, Stanley Hopkins, asks Holmes, whom he admires, for help. Holmes has already determined that it would take a great deal of strength and skill to run a man through with a harpoon and embed it in the wall behind him.
Peter Carey, the 50-year-old victim and former master of the Sea Unicorn of Dundee, was a most unpleasant man, especially when he was drunk. He had a reputation for being violent, even having been prosecuted once for assaulting the local vicar. His daughter is actually glad that he is dead. She and her mother have endured years of abuse from the old whaler and sealer, who moreover had some remarkably peculiar habits. He did not sleep in the family house, but in an outhouse that he built some distance from the house, and which he decorated to look like a sailorâs cabin on a ship. This is where he was found harpooned. Hopkins could find no footprints or other physical evidence.
A tobacco pouch was, however, found at the scene, made of sealskin and with the initials âP. C.â, and also full of strong shipâs tobacco. This is curious, as Peter Carey â Black Peter as people called him â seldom smoked. Indeed, Hopkins found no pipe in the cabin.
The only clue from an eyewitness comes from a stonemason named Slater, who says that he saw the shadow of a head on the blind in one of Careyâs cabin windows, and he is sure that it was not Carey.

This is a story from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes II collection.
In this collection are four of the finest cases of Mr. Sherlock Holmes, narrated by his faithful friend and admirer Dr. Watson. What was the mystery of the engineer's thumb? What was behind the disappearance of the race horse? Why did masked royalty walk up to see Holmes in Baker Street? These and other puzzles are solved in this collection by this bloodhound of a genius.
    Editorial Reviews:
Why have two brothers died after receiving letters marked "KKK"? Were their deaths truly accidental? What is the significance of the five orange pips that accompanied the letters? Why has the son of one of the brothers received a similar letter? Narrator David Timson's solid performance keeps the story's events driving forward energetically as the great detective Sherlock Holmes puzzles out the case. Timson gives Holmes an incisive, unruffled voice that spins observations and hypotheses effortlessly, matched by Dr. Watson's lively, inquisitive tone.

Great book! Very fun to read. This is also a quick read which is kind of nice. I recommend this book! :-)
    Three Stars
    GOOD READ
    Excellent, Entertaining Reading
This is a very well written story with a very interesting and captivating plot: A young Sussex gentleman named John Openshaw has a strange story: in 1869 his uncle Elias Openshaw had suddenly come back to England to settle on an estate at Horsham, West Sussex after living for years in the United States as a planter in Florida and serving as a Colonel in the Confederate Army.
Not being married, Elias had allowed his nephew to stay at his estate. Strange incidents have occurred; one is that although John could go anywhere in the house he could never enter a locked room containing his uncle's trunks. Another peculiarity was that in March 1883 a letter postmarked Pondicherry, in India, arrived for the Colonel inscribed only "K.K.K." with five orange pips enclosed.
More strange things happened: Papers from the locked room were burnt and a will was drawn up leaving the estate to John Openshaw. The Colonel's behavior became bizarre. He would either lock himself in his room and drink or he would go shouting forth in a drunken sally with a pistol in his hand. On 2 May 1883 he was found dead in a garden pool.
On 4 January 1885 Elias's brother Joseph receives a letter postmarked Dundee with the initials "K.K.K" and instructions to leave "the papers" on the sundial. Despite his son's urging, Joseph Openshaw refuses to call the police. Three days later, Joseph Openshaw is found dead in a chalk-pit. The only clue John Openshaw can furnish Holmes is a page from his uncle's diary marked March 1869 in which orange pips have been sent to three men, of whom two flee and the third has been "visited".
Holmes advises Openshaw to leave the diary page with a note telling of the destruction of the Colonel's papers on the garden sundial.

A mutilated woman shares her deep secret with Sherlock Holmes; getting this story off her chest may just save her life. Performer David Timson knows his detective. He has performed dozens of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories, and that's because he's the best. He has the British detective tone down pat. He performs Watson with intelligence, wit, and a bit of pomp. Meanwhile, his well-trained voice proves fluid and easy on the ears. While countless versions of the Sherlock stories exist, Timson's certainly feel most true to Conan Doyle's intentions.

Likeable 40s Era Pulp PI...Suspense With a Twist...Clean Humor Without Being Crass...Wonderful Finale...
...all the hallmarks of a fine classic crime novella! I had grabbed a bunch of these Cooper Collection books a year ago and spent many a morning, coffee in hand, starting the day with a spirited read. As I mentioned in an excerpt from my review for 'Gone With the Window' - "...tale immediately settled in to the action and humor I expected of these works from the author, Bill Bernico such that I've come to thoroughly enjoy each and every episode to date. I'm glad I have a stash of these on my kindle and recommend the same of everybody!" With other fun titles like "Room for One Less" , "Gentlemen Prefer Bombs" , and "Jack the Stripper" why not grab yourself a few, as author is generous enough to post some for free on occasion, and get to know this wily protagonist in an engaging mystery that you'll rip through in less than an hour. Very good series and, as before, I do recommend (I wouldn't be surprised if I owned them all before it's all said and done)!
    Hard-boiled shamus
Author Bill Bernico wrote a whole series of relatively short stories about Matt Cooperâa somewhat rough around the edgesâoften down on his luckâprivate eye. Matt has a set of standards, which sometimes might seem questionable, but in the end, he does want to see justice done.
~Written like the old detective stories, Sam Spare or Phillip Marlow, these are just plain good P.I. stories.
~Iâve read over a dozen of âem and liked every one of âem.
    Good
Read all the multi-packs and shorts packs long ago, since 2012. The author has gotten better with age/practice. I've read almost all of the Cooper stories (1 - 230) and several of Mr. Bernico's short stories and most have not disappointed me. You'll find some poorly written or predictable stories, but for the most part they are fair to good.
The Cooper series are better, but there's a few stinkers, too. They're great for a coffee break or a few minutes to relax.
Light & Clean Gum Shoe Compilation- Entertaining
3 1/2 - 4 stars- This is a compilation of a gum shoe detective series by the author. I am pleasantly surprised that it did actually turn out to be pretty good. I say pleasantly surprised because I was somewhat hesitant when I got the book. It was offered as a free selection one day and then I saw an entire list of the author's books available for free. My first thought was how good could he be if they are all free? Well, the review on the book itself- A pretty good read if you are into 40's era private eye stories. I love all types of mysteries and decided I wanted to try it out. The writing is done well. Written in 1st person but doesn't leave you always on the outside looking in. Being semi-short novellas and short stories didn't take away from the suspense. I also liked these because they are "clean", in other words, the author doesn't have his stories filled w/ "F" bomb conversations and overly gory details. I appreciate that a good story-line could be put together here without the bad language that seems to always appear in Noir type novels.

    Release date: 08-09-13

Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
In this unique collection, discover diverse tales, laden with shades of mystery. Come into a dark, strange world, a hyper-reality where nearly everything is firmly rooted in the familiar-except for some quirky detail that twists the yarn, and takes it for a spin in an unexpected direction. So prepare yourself: keep the lights on.
Inspired by the author's art and by literature, these tales come from different times and places, with characters that search for their identity and challenge their hellish fate. Yet all of them share one thing in common: an unusual mind, one that is twisted.
If you like to read a horror anthology in the strain of Edgar Allan Poe, or if you like to witness the battle between the devil and God, you will enjoy outwitting the devil in this book. Surprisingly, as befitting dark fantasy female protagonists, it is a woman--or rather, her ghost-who finds a way to outwit him.
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent collection of unusual stories!!!
This is a collection of works of varying degrees and lengths. The longer pieces are complete stories with a linear narrative. The shorter pieces feel very much like poetry. All the stories are told from a first person narrative with the exception of one that is just prose back and fourth with the two characters and could easily be a song/duet for two singers.
My favorite story was about a woman who is becoming conscious as a sculptor slowly molds her body and head out of clay. It took an unusual inanimate object and breathed life into it. Great story and a great ending. Definitely original and I look forward to reading / listening to more from this author.
The narration was done very well, but way to slow. I generally listen to everything at 1.5 times speed. With this one, I bumped it up to 2 times speed and she still sounded like she was reading at the normal 1 times speed of most other audio books. This is not a bad thing, just an observation.
I requested review copy of this audio book and I am leaving this voluntary and honest review.
Four women, four fates, one mystical tapestry
Where does Twisted rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Among the audiobooks I've heard so far, Twisted ranks in my top twenty percent, primarily because of the melding of narrator and story, but also because I love Poznansky's forays into the mythos of the Old Testament.
What other book might you compare Twisted to and why?
I can compare Twisted only to Uvi Povnasky's other works about Biblical characters and times. The author is creating her own canon, bit by careful bit. I'd call this book magical realism, but it isn't quite that because the characters are not of this time: it's a passionate recasting of Biblical legend for womens' perspectives, with a helping of honesty thrown in for good measure. These four stories feature female protagonists so real you want to touch them, so bold that their unapologetic and unforgettable nature will haunt you long after the narrator finishes telling you each tale.
What does Heather Jane Hogan bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Heather Jane Hogan brings a finely wrought integrity to her readings, disappearing into each character in turn. Having these stories read to you allows the narrator to characterize each story differently; and different these feminine perspectives are, one form the other.

    Lovely Tales
Lovely Zen tales read with a lovely voice. The music, though, is even more lovely than the tales! It is played with each story, then there is a long segment of uninterrupted music at the end of the 101 tales. What a beautiful ending it was! I plan to use this uninterrupted music for meditation...or whenever I need to soothe my soul...
    Namaste... Jade Dragon
Stories not Useful Without Good Narration
As an editor for Zen stories myself, I understand how it is not an easy job to convey simplicity. The narrator does her job as a technical reader, but it lacks substance in conveying Zen. The recording also seems to lack warmth for her voice which adds a little to how disconnected it sounds from the content. So, combined with the narrators possible unfamiliarity with the simplicity and warm tone of Zen and the very empirical language that is employed by the book itself, I would not recommend this book very highly.
    Loud Music!
The stories are beautiful and the narration is perfect but the stories are separated by very LOUD music. I found it very stressful to listen to. Also the music is not melodic and is very intense. This would have been so lovely without the music!
    Music gets louder and softer.
I like what they're trying to do here with this, but it bugs me a little that the music gets louder and quieter. I'm constantly fiddling with the volume in order for it to be at a comfortable listening level. The classic koans and narration are excellent, however.
    A waste of time
Has 101 Zen Stories turned you off from other books in this genre?
    No,
Would you be willing to try another one of Freda Coopers performances?
    No
    Any additional comments?
Audible's policy of rejecting a book and getting the credit back is very attractive.

    It could have been better
    Setting: England
    Genre: Regency romance
The narration was overly dramatic, and the males sounded forced. I think I would have preferred a straight reading from this narrator.
The story itself is average, though I almost gave it only 2 stars due to the narration. But that's like giving a restaurant a crappy review when your problem is with the server. So, overall this is a fair story. The characters were somewhat one dimensional, but how much depth can characters be in just under 3 1/2 hours? The basic premise was interesting, and had the author developed the characters a little better I think it could have edged up to a high average.
