Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson are visited by a young lady of 30 with a face like a hunted animal. Fear, it seems, causes her to constantly shiver. But her horror lies in the fact that her fears are so vague. Two years ago, in the small hours of the morning, a low whistle was heard in their ancestral home. It was then that her sister suddenly died. Now she lives in the same room her sister vacated, and last night, the whistle sounded again.

    The Sherlock Holmes comic book
This book is a joke! The dumbest thing I ever ordered. No mention was made that it was a comic book! And the story IS NOT the story by Sir Arthur Conon Doyle....not even a believable substitute! I would give a minus 1000 if that rating was an option!!!
This ingenious, intriguing mystery at the creepy Stoke Moran with Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson is a real winner ...
The streets outside 221B Baker Street were dark as Helen Stoner approached and pounded on the door of the home of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. They thought the chill of the night air made her tremble, but rather she said, "It is terror." Naturally Holmes knew a lot about her even before she opened her mouth as he was an excellent detective who could tell a lot from very simple clues other people might overlook. Helen quickly caught them up on why she had come for their help. She, her twin sister, Julia, her mother and stepfather, Dr. Grimesby Roylott, had once lived in India, but the only two survivors in the family were she and her stepfather. What concerned her was the unusual death of her sister and the strange goings on at Stoke Moran.
Dr. Roylott, who had once murdered a man, was now an eccentric recluse. He rarely spoke and when he did it was with a band of gypsies camped out near the house. He also owned a cheetah and a baboon that roamed the grounds. Holmes's interest was piqued and he urged her to tell him every little detail she could remember surrounding the mysterious death of her sister, Julia. Helen carefully told him about the fateful night that her sister had died of fright. There was that terrified scream, a "low whistle," and a "clanging metal sound." As Julia was in the throes of death she had pointed to her stepfather's room and said, "Oh, Save me, Helen! It was the speckled band!" What was she talking about?
Helen was frightened because recently, in the dead of night, she "heard that same whistle." "Fweet!" She somehow knew that death awaited her too. A motive needed to be found and Stoke Moran needed to be explored, but before they could approach the home, Dr. Grimesby Roylott came to threaten them. It was going to be dangerous and Dr. Watson would be carrying a gun. Julia's room was quickly examined and a few things caught Holmes's eye. There was a dummy bedpull, a useless vent, and a bed that was bolted to the floor. Holmes knew exactly what had killed Julia, but would Helen be spared the same fate?
This ingenious, intriguing mystery at the creepy Stoke Moran with Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson is a real winner. This mystery was so tricky that I had no idea as to what any of the clues meant until the very end.

The one thing that could be expected to disturb the peace of life at Blandings is the incursion of imposters. Blandings has imposters like other houses have mice. On this occasion there are two of them--both intent on a dangerous enterprise.
    Members Reviews:
Great Story. Well Read. but. . .
    Any additional comments?
The only thing wrong with this is that the quality of the recording is poor. The reader does a fantastic job, but the sound is as if this were copied from a worn tape.
So That's Where "Upstairs, Downstairs" Came From!
Having either read or listened to a number of the Blandings Castle stories, I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Lord Emsworth and his looney family. I guess this book was probably written early in the series, before Freddie's marriage and the introduction of "The Empress". Although it contains many of the same plot elements of other Blandings sagas, there is a lot more action "below stairs" in this one which really does make it SOMETHING FRESH.
    Cheeky Fun
Lighthearted fun filled with quirky characters in zany situations of misunderstandings, false identities, romantic entanglements and theft of a valuable object. This all plays out in the perfect setting of an English country manor. Reminiscent of the sparkling old 30s movies, I can imagine Robert Montgomery as the smart and cheeky Ashe Marson, and the rest of the cast filled with the best character actors of the day. Though the plot is feather-light, the writing is crisp and witty and completely entertaining. The mastery of language puts many contemporary writers to shame. I thoroughly enjoyed this selection.
I Love P.G. Wodehouse and some of Blandings Castle
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
This is not on the list of my favorite Wodehouse. Some of the series is fantastic, this one just didn't capture me at all. I particularly love Jonathan Cecil reading Wodehouse, I have most of his recordings of Wodehouse and also others reading Wodehouse and I think Cecil is the best by far. I love all of the Jeeves- particularly Thank you Jeeves, Carry On Jeeves and The Mating Season. Loved Damsel in Distress and Luck of the Bodkins. But Something Fresh just doesn't have "it."
    Fun Fun Fun
I can't say much about this book except that it's not to be missed. It's great fun built around a sweet story of comical characters.
Take a break from self-improvement, vampires, how [name here] beat drugs with Jesus and the latest anti-Obama conspiracy and give yourself a real light-hearted treat.
This book is just fun and a vacation from the real world.
I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Title: Comfort to the Enemy and Other Carl Webster Stories

    Narrator: Josh Clark
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 44 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-18-10
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 36 votes
Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
The "Hot Kid" of the U.S. Marshals Service, Carl Webster maintains the law with a cool, showdown attitude. He's one of the richest creations in Elmore Leonard's half century of delivering the goods. From his appearances in the critically acclaimed novels The Hot Kid and Up in Honey's Room, Carl returns to lay down the law in a novella that originally appeared as a serial in the New York Times Sunday Magazine.
The title novella - plus two Carl Webster short stories - traces Carl's career from his run-in with 1930's gangsters to his investigation of a murder at a German POW camp in Oklahoma. This time it's Carl against war-seasoned Afrika Korps Nazis. With its pitch-perfect dialogue, compelling characters, and classic charm, Comfort to the Enemy is vintage Leonard.
    Members Reviews:
    Some bad decisions
I was very disappointed in this book. I was expecting some new Carl Webster stories and instead I am hearing shorter versions of three other books that I already own.
The narrator is not as fitting as the narrator on the original books. If Mr. Leonard wanted to put out this book he should have used his original narrator or just cut in snippets from the original books
    Why are you whispering?
I did enjoy the stories. Leonard is consistantly engrosing. Clark is an excellent narrator, but his voice is too hushed. I couldn't raise the volume on my iPod loud enough to listen in a public setting. However, I do recommend this listen as long as you are listening at home.
    Perfect narrator for Westerns
What made the experience of listening to Comfort to the Enemy and Other Carl Webster Stories the most enjoyable?
    Josh Clark narration.
What other book might you compare Comfort to the Enemy and Other Carl Webster Stories to and why?
Forty Lashes Less One - another Elmore Leonard Western. I've listened a few times all the way through, and it never seems to get old, just funnier!
What does Josh Clark bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
His reading of the character dialogue is epic. Extremely talented.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Made me laugh out loud a bunch of times.
    The Only Problem?
It's not long enough! Leonard's tales of Carl Webster never are. a great read from Josh Clark as well. Highly recommended.

    Editorial Reviews:
Wayne Zurls A Murder in Knoxville: A Sam Jenkins Mystery is a fun, fast-paced "novelette", in the authors own words, a kind of sideways Southern crime noir. Listeners will be gripped from the start by this intriguing audiobook, in which sultry newswoman Rachel Williamson calls in a favor with Prospect, Tennesse Chief of Police Sam Jenkins, leading him down a rabbit hole of crime, drama, and even murder.
Skilled voice actor David Colacci embodies this gruff, arrogant series protagonist with flair, demonstrating a special knack for building tension. Tune in for an unpredictable ride, as Zurl pulls out all the stops in this compact mystery.
    Members Reviews:
    Superficial
No subtle plot machinations nor any language to raise the level of this transparent story.
    Good Short Story
What did you like most about A Murder in Knoxville?
It was definitely a 'listen in one go' audiobook. Feel like you get to know Sam Jenkins quite well in the short period of the book.
What did you like best about this story?
    Structure was nicely rounded.
    Any additional comments?

    Publisher's Summary:
The irrepressible, audacious defence barrister Horace Rumpole continues to juggle the vagaries of the law, the ambiguities of crime, and the contradictions of the human heart. The much loved stories were adapted from his scripts for the hugely popular TV series of the same name.
    Members Reviews:
As if Leo MKern was still with us.
Bill Wallis was an inspired choice to read these stories. He is an excellent character actor and a good impressionist. He has the ability to (although not mimic) Leo McKern's turn of phrase as the irrasible Horace Rumpole. These plays (as that is what they are) are highly recommended and an utter pleasure to hear. I very much enjoy Timothy West also as he is an irrasible 'old hack' and makes the part his own. I was hoping to get Rumpole of the Defence next, this is read by Robert Hardy, whom, like Timothy and Bill, is one of our great actors and is brilliant in every role he is in. There is only one thing that would improve these audio books, but it would require a seance.
    Nice gentle listening
I like Rumpole, Bill Wallis as narrator took a little getting used to after my usual listening on Radio 4. But then I found him to be excellent in the role. Rumpole's cases are always fun and not too 'heavy', sometimes I like to have a little light relief.
All in all a really enjoyable book.
    First rate!
Very entertaining, in true Rumpole style and made even better with the excellent Bill Wallis narrating. It was a joy to listen to.
    Good tale, perfect performance.
Thoroughly enjoyed this one, and it even raised a few audible sniggers... no mean feat with me.
John Mortimer's tales of Rumpole are, of course, timelessly classy: He writes with pace, wit, substance, and a vocabulary so velvety-rich that it reminds me of a good Beychevelle. To this sumptuous prose, the talented and intelligent reading of Bill Wallis provides the perfect complement... the aged Cantal; possibly, even, the Stilton.
Forgive my gustatorial similies... I can only plead that Rumpole would have mightily approved... but for me, this is a lovely tale, wonderfully told, and great easy listening.
Classic Rumpole. Great for car journeys.
What did you like most about Rumpole and the Golden Thread?
I subscribed to Audible because I make regular long car journeys from London to Cornwall or London to the South of France. These Rumpole episodes are 90 minutes long which is the perfect journey time between rest breaks.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Rumpole and the Golden Thread?
    His experiences in darkest Africa.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
How can one person produce so many distinct male and female voices?
On the minus side, some of the soundtrack was a bit muffled and hard to hear over road noise.
    Any additional comments?
Will definitely be buying more Rumpole!

    Editorial Reviews:
John Mortimer's Rumpole and the Blind Tasting has the old British barrister Rumpole defending another member of the Timson clan, the family that is Rumpole and Hilde's bread and butter. Leo McKern compellingly dramatizes Rumpole as he defends Hugh Timson who has apparently stolen an entire garageful of wine. Equal parts mystery, crime drama, and comedy, this audiobook based on the popular television series will not disappoint listeners. Full of wry humor, smart soliloquys, and everyone's favorite characters, this volume is the among the very best of Rumpole.
    Members Reviews:
Rumpole, as he was meant to be heard
Leo McKern and John Clifford Mortimer deliver the very model of the English barrister of a bygone and much missed day. Rest easy, good sirs, beneath angel choirs...and you, dear reader, listen to Rumpole spin his yarn about deceptions both in and out of Court.
    Wonderful performance
John Mortimers Rumpole books are always funny and literate but for me it is Leo McKerns incomparable performance as Rumpole that puts certain of them over the top. I have listen to this one more than once to enjoy its humor, erudition, and fine acting . Great fun!

    Editorial Reviews:
Hilariously cynical, yet more naïve than he'd like to believe, Rumpole is taken in by the lifestyle of a hippie-type school teacher brought up on a narcotics charge in Rumpole and the Alternative Lifestyle. Leo McKern, as the voice of Rumpole, brings out all the swagger resting just under the surface of this decorous old barrister. Based on John Mortimer's BBC radio plays, this audiobook will have listeners laughing along as they wonder how Rumpole will get himself out of this one!

    A Mortimer/McKern Pleasure
Leo McKern is Horace Rumple and this tale of 1970s counter-culture jurisprudence is a gem. As always, John Mortimer's stories may be about trials and the law but they are also about people and society. In this one, we get a look at WWII nostalgia and narcs with the same even handedness that Mortimer brings to all his stories. So join the "old fella" and enjoy the journey.
