Title: MC5's 'Kick Out the Jams' (33 1/3 Series)
    Author: Don McLeese
    Narrator: L. J. Ganser
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 5 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-26-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music
    Publisher's Summary:
When the Motor City 5 stormed the stage, the band combined the kinetic flash of James Brown on acid with the raw musical dynamics of the Who gone berserk. Its a unique band that can land itself on the cover of Rolling Stone a month before the release of its debut album and then be booted from its record contract just a few months later. Rock had never before seen the likes of the MC5 and never will again. Many of us who were floored by the 5 in concert were convinced that this was the most transcendently pulverizing rock we would ever experience, while many more who heard or read about the band dismissed the 5 as a caricature, a fraud, White Panther bozos play-acting at revolution.
There was always plenty of humor to the 5 - visionary knuckleheads - though the question was whether they were in on the joke. Frequently ridiculed during their short career, theyve since been hailed as a primal influence on everything from punk to metal to Rage Against the Machine to the Detroit populist resurgence of the White Stripes, Kid Rock, and Eminem.
    Editorial Reviews:
From the first word of its narration, this audiobook is presented by L. J. Ganser with a voice more akin to a sports broadcaster than anything else. Influential to artists as diverse as Eminem and The White Stripes, Kick Out the Jams also had a profound effect on author Don McLeese. McLeese chronicles the band's short career, and ponders their unique blend of innovation and slapstick. Were they ahead of their time? Did they burn too hot? A mix of personal essay, music history, and accessible analysis, the audiobook contains fast-paced, engaging music writing. One of the book's highlights is the generous social, political, and cultural context the author gives to the history of MC5's music.

    Title: Elliott Carter (American Composers)
    Author: James Wierzbicki
    Narrator: Tim Lundeen
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 20 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-29-12
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music
    Publisher's Summary:
This compact introduction to the life and works of composer Elliott Carter provides a fresh perspective on one of the most significant American composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. A leading voice of the American classical music tradition and a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Music, Carter was initially encouraged to become a composer by Charles Ives, and he went on to learn from Walter Piston at Harvard University and Nadia Boulanger in Paris.
Drawing on Carter's voluminous writings and compositions, James Wierzbicki provides a clear discussion of Carter's evolving understanding of musical time and the influence of film on his work. Celebrating his 100th birthday in 2008 by premiering a number of new compositions, Carter has been a powerful presence on the American new music scene, an important connection to American music's foundational figures, and a dynamic force in its continuing evolution.
    Critic Reviews:
"Thoroughly researched and accessible to the lay reader, the book will intrigue readers who wish to deepen their appreciation of this legendary composer." (Library Journal)
"A gratifying success. The story of Elliott Carter's life and work is succinctly told and is one that specialists and non-experts alike can read with great profit." (Arnold Whittall, author of Exploring Twentieth-Century Music: Tradition and Innovation)
    Members Reviews:
    Unambitious, but informative
The public needs a more recent overview of Elliott Carter's immense career, but since the composer is still going strong after his 100th birthday, authors may fear that any effort they publish will immediately be out of date. As far as I know, the sole attempt as I write this is James Wierzbicki's book on Carter, part of the University of Illinois Press series American Composers.
The series allows the author precisely 100 pages of text (sans footnotes and index), so this is not a detailed analysis of the composer's works, and thus not competing with David Schiff'sThe Music of Elliott Carter(which I'd really like to see in a third edition). Rather, Wierzbicki sets out to sketch the arc of his career -- neoclassical youth, complex and aggressively modernist mature period, and prolific if somewhat lightweight old age. The only works that Wierzbicki really discusses in detail are the Piano Sonata (1945-46), the Sonata for Cello and Piano (1948) and the String Quartet No. 1 (1951) and the String Quartet No. 2 (195), since these are the turning point where Carter established a distinctive style. Even here, however, Wierzbicki does not present any examples from the scores, and his focus is on Carter's establishment of a new aesthetic, not the individual works.
Even if Wierzbicki wasn't given much room to work with, and so his comments must be to some degree general, this is still a useful book for fans of composers because of its large bibliography. Wierzbicki cites a great deal of critical response to Carter that I wasn't aware of, such as Taruskin ripping into him as some kind of abstract elitist, and Ned Rorem offering some surprising fraternal recognition. Wierzbicki also admits that Carter's very late pieces are not of the same quality as his work up to the "Symphonia", an opinion I share but which I had not yet seen in writing.

They are as representative of the world of Islam today as the conservatives and extremists we see every night on the news. Heavy metal, punk, hip-hop, and reggae are each the music of protest, and in many cases considered immoral in the Muslim world. This music may also turn out to be the soundtrack of a revolution unfolding across that world.
Why, despite governmental attempts to control and censor them, do these musicians and fans keep playing and listening? Partly, of course, for the joy of self-expression, but also because, in this region, everything is political.
In Heavy Metal Islam, Mark LeVine explores the influence of Western music on the Middle East through interviews with musicians and fans, introducing us to young Muslims struggling to reconcile their religion with a passion for music and a desire for change. The result is a revealing tour of contemporary Islamic culture through the evolving music scene in the Middle East and Northern Africa. Heavy Metal Islam is a surprising, wildly entertaining foray into a historically authoritarian region where music just might be the true democratizing force.

    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 6 votes

    Publisher's Summary:
As a composer, writer, and artist, John Cage was a giant of American experimental music. He is most widely known for his 1952 composition 4'33, whose three movements continue to challenge the definition of music by being performed without playing a single note. In questioning fundamental tenets of Western music, Cage was often at the center of controversy, and is regarded as an important contributor to many facets of American culture.
To enable readers to understand what makes Cage such an extraordinary figure, David Nicholls masterfully places his striking body of prose and poetry, over 300 music compositions, and prominent performance career into historical, environmental, intellectual, philosophical, and aesthetic contexts. Nicholls' intimate study of John Cage's personal and professional life confirms the legacy of this major figure in 20th century American culture.
    Critic Reviews:
"Nicholls offers a meticulously researched and beautifully crafted narrative that lays equal emphasis on Cage's personal and professional development." (Times Literary Supplement)
"In this interesting and illuminating work, David Nicholls . . . chronicles and critiques the composer's life. This is an easily accessible and well-written overview of Cage's work." (Sydney Morning Herald)

Sll he talks about is simply killing animals
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
The narrator does a pretty good job of reading the text.
Could you see God, Guns, & Rock 'n' Roll being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
    no
    Any additional comments?
The final straw was when he started to talk about killing elephants, which are an endangered species. This was a mistake getting this book and I am requesting a refund after I finish my review of the book.
A great education in gun safety, morals and Rock.
Would you listen to God, Guns, & Rock 'n' Roll again? Why?
I have listened twice, and learned even more. As well as being entertained, I learned about someone who was very influential in my youth. Ted has inspired me to get "Official" training about gun safety and ownership. We have always had guns at the beach house I grew up in on Long Island, New York. We were always safe. But you can never know too much. The stories of his music are such great fun to hear. I see "Uncle Ted" every time he rolls into Ft. Lauderdale (my home) each year. Usually winding down his tour, getting ready for the upcoming season. Like Uncle Ted says, "The music is great, but sh-t has to die."
Who was your favorite character and why?
"Uncle Ted" and the story of Fred Bear.
What about Scotty Drakes performance did you like?
I would rather have heard Ted's voice, but after a while, he was Ted.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    YES
    I love Uncle Ted
great book sure was inspiring I love Uncle Ted perfect book for the non Hunter or the hunter it don't matter Uncle Ted's right and every way

    Publisher's Summary:
The Beatles: Image and the Media charts the transformation of the Beatles from teen idols to leaders of the youth movement and powerful cultural agents. Drawing upon American mainstream print media, broadcasts, albums, films, and videos, the study covers the band's career in the United States. Michael R. Frontani explores how the Beatles' media image evolved and how this transformation related to cultural and historical events.
Upon their arrival in the U.S., the Beatles wore sharply tailored suits and cast themselves as adorable, accessible teen heartthrobs. By the end of the decade, they had absorbed the fashion and consciousness of the burgeoning counterculture and were using their interviews, media events, and music to comment on issues such as the Vietnam War, drug culture, and civil rights. Frontani traces the steps that led to this change and comments on how the band's mantra of essential optimism never wavered despite the evolution of its media profile. The book is published by University Press of Mississippi.
Michael R. Frontani is associate professor of communications at Elon University. His work has appeared in American Journalism, Journal of American Culture, Journalism History, and African Studies Review.

An Academic Thesis On Beatles Media With A Re-Tell
This book is less interesting for the Beatles story, which has been re-told countless times and better served in Tune In by Mark Lewisohn, which was published after this book. What is more interesting are the tidbits of information that we get about how the media culture at the time reacted to the Beatles. Unfortunately, the book is mostly padded with the Beatles story with not enough media reaction. The narration was good, but nothing in the book really grabbed me.

My grandson is named after Django
This was a perfect gift for my new grandson so he can learn about the man he was names after. Nice pictures Nice story.
An Apt Tribute to a Great Guitarist and Resilient Person
Bonnie Christensen's Django captures the true story of a young man who experienced prodigious promise as a young guitarist in 1930s Paris, then tragedy as his fretting hand was burned beyond use, then triumph as he re-taught himself to play the guitar. The lyrical text (some syntax sacrificed for the sake of rhythm) is matched with oils that range from smoky, drab, and hazy, to vibrant and captivating - a contrast not unlike Django's life itself.
A poetic biography with informative back matter. Overall, instructive and moving. Makes you want to listen to Django's music and overcome your own petty setbacks.
This biography of Django Reinhardt has a beautiful, ethereal quality you're going to love!
Django Reinhardt was born in a horse drawn gypsy wagon in Belgium. It was 1910 and times were hard. It was January and snow lightly coated tree branches and the step of the wagon. The laundry flapped in the breeze and animals stuck close to the wagons. It was not an easy life because the family was constantly "moving place to place, country to country." There was no opportunity for Django to go to school, but there was something that he would learn and learn well. That thing, which would later become a passion, was music. The gypsy dancers would twirl faster and faster to the sound of music, "Heartbeats drumming, breathless singing,/ Float on music to the stars."
When he was a boy, his father left, never to return and Django had to grow up quickly. When he was still a boy, he dazzled Parisians when he played his "banjo-guitar." Soon they were calling him the "Gypsy Genius" and "Prodigy Boy." By 1928 he was being asked to join bands and "make the big time." His gypsy wagon beckoned to him and he left to go back to it. It was during the night that a fire started in the wagon. "A scream, a screech, then footsteps running" . . . Django was burning up. His recuperation would be long and arduous. No one thought he would ever dazzle the crowds again, but Django Reinhardt was determined to make his useless hand make music again.
This rhythmically related tale was beautifully executed and the bold, vibrant artwork complimented it very nicely. The story seemed to swirl and somehow had an ethereal quality about it. The storyline captured my imagination and I went to listen to clips of Django's amazing guitar work in Amazon's music section.

    Members Reviews:
Informative But Factually Flawed In Some Respects
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The author describes the roots of Rock 'n Roll from the time of Charlie Patton forward to 1960s. There is the obligatory nod to Robert Johnson. Various genres of music from blues to country to gospel have an influence on an emerging musical format. In addition to artists like Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Bo Diddly, Buddy Holly, there is coverage of DJ's, record producers, songwriters, and managers who are described in this account. The lecturer often indicates the influence particular musicians had on those who followed.
What other book might you compare The Modern Scholar: Rock 'n' Roll and American Society: Part One to and why?
Any collection of articles by Lester Bangs. Audible has many biographies and autobiographies of musicians.
What about the narrators performance did you like?
The author and narrator are the same and the presentation is in lecture format. The lecturer is polished and easy to follow.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
A movie could probably not be made of this subject.
    Any additional comments?
Audible usually provides an accompanying booklet in PDF for with a Modern Scholar title but fails to do so here. The lecturer makes some grating errors and omissions. Johnny Cash did not put tissue paper under the strings of his guitar to achieve his sound. Country music of that era did not feature drums so Cash would put regular paper under his guitar strings to mimic the snap of a snare drum. Les Paul is mentioned as a pioneer who made electric guitars and experimented with multi-track recording. However, completely unmentioned was Leo Fender who had a far greater influence. Leo Fender made the first electric bass guitars that truly give rock music its drive and its rhythm. His Stratocasters and Telecasters are used by more musicians than Les Paul guitars. Finally, Leo Fender made wonderful amplifiers to suit the needs of musicians, including the need for distortion and reverb.
    Well researched and accurate
I am extremely impressed with this audio book and will be recommending it to my students. The author takes the time to pay homage to many lesser known artists and musicians who laid the foundation of what we now know as rock and roll. Musicians like Charlie Patton, Jelly Roll Morton, and Son House, as well as promoters Alan Lomax, and John Hammond to name a few.
He also examines the role that segregation and racial predgudice in the evolution of this music; which seems to be conveniently left out most histories of rock.
    Educational
I've been listening to rock since I was 12, back then I had a Guns n' Roses poster pinned to my bedroom door. My listening zone usually includes bands from the 70s, 80s and 90s. So I really missed out on the Rock 'n' Roll artists of the 50s and 60s.

Have you ever been carried away by a piece of classical music? The sad song of a single violin might make us cry, but the idea of finding out more about classical music can often be intimidating. In this funny, evocative, personal book, Gareth takes us on a journey of musical discovery that explains and entertains in equal measure.
Over the course of three series of the Bafta award-winning The Choir, Gareth has unearthed a passion for classical music in schoolchildren, reluctant teenage boys, and even a whole town.
With his infectious enthusiasm and gift for explanation, Gareth's very personal narrative takes you by the hand and leads you through a world of eccentric composers, flamboyant conductors, troubled geniuses and all the colourful personalities that make up the story of Classical Music. It will also provide a foundation of classical music understanding and give the reader the tools to appreciate a whole new world of music.
So whether you want to expand your horizons, spend time with the great composers, introduce an almost infinite variety into your iPod playlist, or are just curious about what you might be missing out on, Music for The People will leave you entertained, informed and completely inspired.

    Good but opportunities missed
There is no doubt that Gareth Malone is inspirational - one has just to observe his work with the most unlikely of people in The Choir to appreciate that. This enthusiasm is carried over into this book/audibook. I came to this as someone who has a lifelong liking of classical music but lacked the indepth understanding of music theory to really appreciate the music I was listening to. This book is a good introduction to understanding music though at times was a bit too basic for me - though admittedly I do play the piano (albeit badly) and therefore already knew the basics of music.
There are two problems with this audiobook. The first is that it is a reading of the book and this includes lists. In the book lists are great for reference and going back to but are not great in an audiobook. This often included lists of compositions to listen to. For these the book would be a better option.
My second problem is that insufficient advantage was taken of the audio form of the book. Whilst there are some pieces of music played there would have been enormous benefit for more demonstration of musical instruments and instrumental pieces.
Really what Gareth Malone needs to do is to produce a special version for audiobook which would really use the advantage of musical demonstration and comparison to really help the listener understand music.
Having said this I thoroughly enjoyed listening and learnt a lot.
Why didn't I have a music teacher like Gareth?
The content of this book was excellent: diverse and sometimes challenging. However, I never felt that I was stupid for not understanding this type of music and Gareth is never snobby about it. I bought the book as I wanted to be able to listen to more music without getting frustrated by it and just switching it off. I now listen to music on radio 3 and classic FM with a different 'ear' and am starting to enjoy things I would never have listened to before.
