A Biography?

We were arguing if a book about a piece if music could be called a biography. I think so, as 'Messiah' has almost taken on a life of it's own. The book gives a potted bio of Handel and Jennings as well as the work, and some of the political and theological context that lead to it's writing.

However, you will need a copy of the full work to hand to get the best out of the last part of this recording.Yes, there are some extracts but nowhere near enough. I loved the analysis of the score (engaging and not the least dry) but needed to flick back and forward between the 'book' and the music itself to get the most out of it. And, boy, did we! It now makes sense in a way it never did, despite being very familiar with the work.

Few words, lots of music

A very disappointing experience. There are extensive pieces of Chopin's music which are delightful but not what I expect from an audio tape. The narration is minimal and tells me very little about Chopin's life. There is no note of which pieces are being played at the time they are played, nor who the artists are. I have many CDs of Chopin's music. I bought this tape to learn about his life but learnt very little.

Deadpan Funny

I'm now in my early 40's so this was my era of clubbing and although I never went I was familiar with the goings on at the Hacienda. Read brilliantly and deadpan funny by the author. Worth a listen to by any northerner of my age who used to go to the early raves and clubs

The capital of cool

It's short but pure class this and well worth it. Works as a brilliant companion to 24 hour party people.

An eye opener for anyone thinking about opening a club . Very entertaining stright from the Horse's Mouth. Well worth a listen.

Surprise like no other!

This buy was a shot in the dark. Never heard of Victor or this book. My expectations were very low. But I needed to motivate myself as I could not bring myself to practising my guitar. So I gave this one a try and Lord ... whata a find. I love how the words are backed by music in the background (although I find Mike's performance irritatingly overacted) and I can't get enough of the content. Music as mystery and invisible mighty force. No phony stuff and cheap superficial spiritualism (at least to my mind). That's what you will find there.

Zen Bass

This is similar to the books 'Zen Guitar' and 'Effortless Mastery', except it focuses on a bass player instead of a guitar player. Another differentiator is that this audio book is punctuated with great music. (Except for the musical subvocalizations when 'Music' is speaking, which are really distracting). The stories are fantastical on purpose - he is trying to illustrate and emphasize his points about music (and life). The strictly literal minded will probably not like this book. Ditto for people who think "notes" are the end-all and be-all of music. Ditto for the people who only like one style of music and hold all other forms of musical expression in disdain. I think this book should be nearly required listening for all musicians. I've listened to it 3 times now. It is great.

20 years too late

Truthfully, it's right on time. I think the book should have been called 'The Lesson'. Although Wooten presents this is a dialogue primarily about music between teacher and student, the concepts are equally transferable to any subject. Reminiscent of 'Zen and the Art of Archery'.

Deeply Profound

There is an old saying, "When the student is ready, the master will appear." That's how this book is setup, with the author's teacher showing up to teach a professional bass player how to play music, and that's how this book found its way to me. It was the right message at the right time, and there is simply not enough I can say about it that will sing its praises properly.

There are a great many self-help books out there, just as there are a great many musical instruction books and books on fundamental spirituality. This book is all three at once - a masterpiece in its own right - and so much more.

Zen Stories To Go With Your Flute Music

What is advertised is what is got: Zen Stories and Zen Music. There really isn't much to say about the stories, they're Zen stories: some inspire, some feel like posturing, and some leave you scratching your head. Alec Sand reads the stories as well as they can be read, for which I give him five stars.

Beware, there is A LOT of flute music here. The forty-three minute music collection takes up the final twelve chapters of sixteen. I assume that the first four chapters correspond to the four story collections, but they aren't pure narration. Between each story is a ten-ish second burst of flute music, either to give you a moment to reflect or to pad out the time, and sometimes the bursts go on for quite a bit. I think these longer bursts indicate the end/beginning of a new book, but I'm not sure. They are the reason why I rated the Overall as less than the Performance and Story, which is a first for me.

The discounted price for Audible Members is just what I think this collection is worth. The current nine-dollar price is a bit much, and I certainly wouldn't use a credit.

Should be Free

Should be free really, audio quality wasnt there. The reason i like audible is most of the stuff is of good quality, reviews help you sift through the junk, unlike free sites where you not sure what to believe, you can find almost anything and downloading is not a hack. But they should offer more free stuff like these zen stories, I have downloaded loads of free talks that I enjoyed more than this AB.

Long but worth it.

A true testament of how four boys, Malcolm, Angus, Phil and Bon took on the world in their own way and left it screaming for more. This is a great book that is well overdue. A little too long due to the many, many, many show stories that could have been cut down, this made it a bit much at times but the shear story does keep you engaged. A great listen even if you aren't a fan of the band.

What a fan-bloody-tastic listen...

I have just finished this title and am very glad I purchased it. Having to date been an 'on the fence' ACDC fan, not an obsessive one, I wasn't sure if I should listen to this or not. So glad I did! I didn't realise how much the boys were 'before their time'. How driven and focused (Malcolm and Angus) had been from their youth towards their goal of creating 'real rock'. The behind the scenes info and background on their ups and downs, only makes you realise how incredibly hard they worked for their sucess, with many losses on the way. RIP Bon Scott! What a talent you were (and remain). I have been busy buying up a few more of the back cataloge albums that I didn't have, and enjoying the tracks with a new appreciation, knowing the the stories behind the songs now.
