    Editorial Reviews:
A brief but fact-filled history of the Sex Pistols written and performed by veteran Canadian music journalist and DJ Alan Cross. In crisp and confident tones, Cross tells the story of the Sex Pistols' formation in recession-darkened London at Malcolm McLaren's shop, the shock waves the band sent through the establishment, their touring and management fiascos, demise and reunions, and the lasting influence they've had on music and youth culture. Filled with interesting facts and anecdotes, this is highly recommended for listeners interested in a short course on this seminal band.

    Editorial Reviews:
Alan Cross' long career as a music journalist, most notably as host of the show The Secret History of Rock serves him well as he offers up this concise history of The Clash. From their humble beginnings auditioning hundreds of drummers and nearly starving, to being one of the members of the "holy trinity of punk", along with The Sex Pistols and The Ramones, Cross' natural, engaging voice makes music history come alive. With just enough of both anecdote and the bigger picture, listeners will get to know the importance of The Clash.

    Editorial Reviews:
Tracing the arc of the Beastie Boys' career from three kids screwing around with samples and a microphone, to worldwide fame and credibility as one of the greatest bands of alternative rock, Alan Cross is at his best with this audiobook, Beastie Boys. From "Brass Monkey" to "Sabotage" and beyond, Canadian broadcast journalist Cross tells the story of the band that fused rock and rap with his usual wry wit and matter-of-fact storytelling. Born out of the hip-hop movement in New York in the 1980s, the Beastie Boys went on to run a record company, produce and direct films, record and perform solo work, and continue to sell records. A fitting tribute so soon after MCA's (Adam Yauch) death.

    Editorial Reviews:
Just as the story of Nirvana always begins with Kurt Cobain, the story of the Smashing Pumpkins always begins with Billy Corgan. In this episode of The Alan Cross Guide to Alternative Rock, the Canadian music critic and radio broadcaster takes listeners back to the origins and rise to fame of the Pumpkins, when Corgan took up the mantle of "unhappy post-punk fuzz rock" after Cobain's suicide.
In his rapid-fire yet infinitely listenable delivery, Cross reveals little-known facts about the band as well as a complete survey of the history and sound of the Pumpkins. Cross is clearly passionate about sharing his love of music. He writes, hosts, and produces his long-running syndicated radio program The Secret History of Rock.

    Editorial Reviews:
Syndicated radio broadcaster and music expert Alan Cross uses the analogy of Johnny Appleseed to describe how the Ramones "seeded punk" across the U.S. His description could not be more apt. It seems that wherever Johnny, Joey, Dee Dee, and Tommy Ramone played during the 1970s and '80s, a handful of punk bands sprang up in their wake.
In this episode of the Alan Cross Guide to Alternative Rock, Cross covers the background of the band (when Johnny and Dee Dee befriended each other on a construction site in 1974) as well as its enormous influence. Cross quotes early reviews of the Ramones sound by New York City music critics and describes the band himself as "Beach Boys on the combination of crank and glue".

    Editorial Reviews:
Part of the Alan Cross guide to Alternative Rock, this audio guide to New Order is a comprehensive review of New Order's rise to fame and rocky history. Born from the ashes of Joy Division after Ian Curtis' suicide, New Order began playing together as a full band in October of 1980. Hitting the big time in the UK with the single Blue Monday, New Order then enjoyed over a decade of hits. Even though they've had a tumultuous history in the past two decades, New Order has earned a place in the rock canon. Cross' upbeat and intelligent guide is a great introduction to this enduring band.

Alan Cross, the Canadian music expert and long-time host of the radio show The Secret History of Rock, has plenty to say about music. In his four-volume audio series The Alan Cross Guide to Alternative Rock he regales listeners with background information and insights into bands like Nirvana, the Ramones, the Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis, and more. The Guide is more than a survey; it is a consummate exploration of modern sound. In this installment of the series, Cross talks expertly about Robert Smith and his band The Cure, who are "the messiahs of melancholy" but with a pop twist, a recipe that led to the sale of over 27 million albums.

    Editorial Reviews:
Radio music journalist Alan Cross' concise description of Jonathan Richman's life and career is a fascinating tribute to this cult rock star. Always influenced by and influencing the punk movement, yet always somehow an outsider, Richman has been making quirky, inspired music for over four decades. From his humble beginnings in Boston to his international fame and his long-standing group of devoted fans, Cross points out that although Richman has never had the commercial success of a huge rock band, he has had a long slow-building career that has allowed him to experiment, and his listeners have benefited.

    Editorial Reviews:
Alan Cross's artist profile of Oasis explores why the music is so popular as well as why the tabloids and music magazines have always found the band so newsworthy. This episode of The Alan Cross Guide to Alternative Rock is loaded with eccentric facts about Liam and Noel Gallagher and the rest of the always-controversial band.
Cross has enjoyed a long career in radio and his voice is paced beautifully. Even when he's covering a lot of ground in a short span of time, he never sounds rushed. In his recordings, musicians are portrayed both intimately and expertly. Listeners are left with a profound sense of musical and biographical understanding - and they might just put down their headphones and start a band themselves.

    Editorial Reviews:
Alan Cross, beloved radio broadcaster and documenter of all things rock presents an artist profile of the band Green Day as part of his Alan Cross Guide to Alternative Rock audiobook series. Cross, in his familiar, affable, radio voice discusses the band Green Day. "It's one thing to be young, loud, and snotty," Cross remarks "but it's another thing entirely to be old, loud, and snotty." Not many angry young punk bands have the kind of staying power of Green Day and Cross takes a look at how this California punk band has been able to remain relevant and authentic after all these years. Fans of Green Day and new listeners alike will delight at this succinct primer.
    Members Reviews:
    A fact-filled review of a GREAT band.
Would you listen to Green Day again? Why?
Yes. I am a Green Day fan. Have been for years, but I was always just listening to the music. I didn't know much about the band members until listened to this.
What did you like best about this story?
The straightforward facts presented in a way that made you pay close attention. Learning things I didn't know before.
What about Alan Crosss performance did you like?
He is a very clear speaker and his presentation of the book was great. I couldn't find any fault with his narration.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No. Its really not the type of book that brings out emotions in a person. Non-Fiction works usually are not emotional at all to me.
    Any additional comments?
A must listen short piece for any fan of Green Day or Punk music.
