    Editorial Reviews:
When discussing Canadian electronic band Skinny Puppy, Alan Cross states that "aural ugliness can be a very powerful art statement". The band might not be easy to listen to at first, but if a person hangs in there long enough, he or she might discover something innovative and beautiful in Skinny Puppy's "musical brutality".
In this installment of The Alan Cross Guide to Alternative Rock, the famed music critic and radio broadcaster brings his expert knowledge and cultivated disc jockey's voice to what is simultaneously a rapid survey and an in-depth portrait of a pioneer band in the electro-industrial genre. The facts are always compelling and the voice even more so.

    Listened to the sample.
cEvin Key was not the lead singer of Images in Vogue, he was the drummer. It is troubling that you have inaccuracies in the very start (as you describe the beginning) of the history of this band.

Alan Cross, beloved radio broadcaster and documenter of all things rock, presents an artist profile of the band Coldplay, as part of his Alan Cross Guide to Alternative Rock audiobook series. Cross, in his familiar, affable radio voice, discusses the history of the band and its raise to stardom. Even people who "get" the band are surprised by their sudden skyrocketing to fame; Cross examines the phenomenon and contextualizes the group. Called the new U2, the new REM, and the new Radiohead, Coldplay has undeniably carved their own niche out of the middle 1990s Brit-pop revolution and Cross gives them their due. Any fan of the band looking for a quick primer to its inception will find this an informative piece of rock journalism.

Alan Cross traces the origins of Linkin Park to a time when "rock was dead" and pop music, rap, and hip hop ruled the charts. The California band - one of the top-selling rock bands of the 21st Century - emerged from a nu metal and rap metal background and pioneered an innovative sound, adding its own electronic flourishes.
Canadian writer and broadcaster Cross has decades of experience in radio, and his expertise as a disc jockey shows in his delivery of this edition of Alan Cross Guide to Alternative Rock. He packs the 20-minute artist profile with enlightening information that will interest music buffs and newcomers alike, but his delivery is so well metered that a listener doesn't notice the pace.

The story of Nirvana begins with a troubled young man growing up in suburban Washington State, and Alan Cross reverently explores the roots of both Kurt Cobain and his band Nirvana in this broad and bittersweet elegy. Cross covers a lot of terrain in this short segment - part of his four-volume audio Alan Cross Guide to Alternative Rock - but he manages to do so comprehensively, examining everything from Cobain's early rotating cast of drummers to his drug addiction, from his struggles with fame to his romance with Courtney Love, from his suicide to its fallout.
Cross is a Canadian radio broadcaster and writer who has been a life-long "music geek" and both his expertise and his experience behind a microphone show in this recording.

    Narrator: Nadia May
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 29 mins

    Publisher's Summary:
Plato and Aristotle, Holloway finds, were aware that music can either inflame the soul with passion or can awaken it to reason and help to cultivate temperance. What Holloway proposes, a rediscovery of the musical wisdom of Plato and Aristotle, will completely change the way we think about music.
    Critic Reviews:
"The great virtue of All Shook Up is its unfashionable insistence that music be taken seriously." (Wall Street Journal)
"Refreshing...may well appeal to both critics and defenders of pop music." (Publishers Weekly)

    Does Music Matter?
In the early 1970s amidst the Indian gurus at the Whole Earth Festival at the University of California Davis, I met a young American who admired Ravi Shakar and was, not surprisingly, studying the sitar. He assured me that all of the ragas composed by traditional Indian musicians were designed to enhance or induce spiritual states. Thus, for the Hindu musical tradition of the ragas, the concept that instrumental music affects the human mind and spirit is a basic presupposition. Indeed, the primary purpose of the music is not entertainment but Hindu spiritual development.
Nevertheless, it seems that in the modern West, most Christians and secularists alike reject with asperity this elementary insight that the most influential message of music is found in its rhythm, melody and harmony rather than in its lyrics. Therefore, we owe a debt of gratitude to Carson Holloway for this groundbreaking recovery of the role of music in the moral education of human beings. He contrasts the deep concern with music as a moral force of the ancients represented by Plato and Aristotle and of certain moderns such as Rousseau and Nietzsche with the lack of such interest of other moderns such as Hobbes and Locke.
Holloway acknowledges Allan Bloom's recognition of the anti-philosohical influence of rock music but finds Bloom's analysis wanting. I think that Holloway succeeds in advancing a rational understanding of the subject. Unfortunately, an objective appraisal of his work is difficult for many because music lies on the fault line of the culture war between those who see the Judeo-Christian ethic as corresponding to the natural order of creation and those whose ethic denies the existence of such an order in favor of human autonomy.
Defenders of the Judeo-Christian ethic are typically disarmed on the musical front by their failure to understand what any random student of Ravi Shankar knows: Music directly affects the soul without regard for the rational content of lyrics, which are quite optional. Thus, the sounds of the music, i.e., its musical form, may enhance or detract from any lyrics. Indeed, the form of the music may well be more powerful than the words and overwhelm their message.
Holloway makes a useful contribution to our understanding of how music affects us beginning with this recognition that music does affect our souls in powerful ways that matter in both ethics and politics.
OK but pretty long-winded and mis-packaged
This book does a decent job at describing the theories of music and its effect on character in Plato, Aristotle, Rousseau and Nietzsche. But it does so in a rather long-winded way. I found myself constantly saying 'ok, I get it!' as the author repeated themselves and spelled out their point yet again.

    Language: English
    Release date: 03-11-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music
    Publisher's Summary:
Since John Lennon composed "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" in early 1967, fans and music critics alike have argued over the meaning of the song. Is it about drugs? Is it just a lyrical response to a drawing given Lennon by his 4-year-old son Julian? Is there some deeper meaning? Professor Tim Kasser goes beyond speculative explanations by applying innovative psychological methods to the song's lyrics and music. He deeply analyzes the song's linguistic structure, its basic theme, and the way its words and music had been used by Lennon in earlier songs. As the findings accumulate, Kasser weaves them together with the facts of Lennon's life and established psychological theories to provide an integrative (and sometimes surprising) perspective on the psychological processes that led Lennon to write "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". Kasser goes on to follow the unfolding of these personal dynamics in later Lennon songs like "I Am the Walrus", "Yer Blues", and "Working Class Hero". No other work has so closely examined this period of Lennon's life with such a sophisticated psychological approach. Kasser's methods and perspective point to the usefulness of scientific psychology for understanding why a particular person does a particular thing at a particular time, at the same time that they shed new light on this fascinating and controversial man.
    Members Reviews:
Fascinating, sometimes frustrating, but always thought-provoking
In this study of "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds", author Tim Kasser applies psychology & statistical analysis (among other fields) to John Lennon's wistfully soaring, surreal song. It's indeed a form of psychobiography, in this case using one specific facet of Lennon's creative & personal life to examine what events & influences led to the song, what intense emotions it grappled with, and how these things reveal themselves in other songs as well.
The key event, of course, is the traumatic death of John's mother Julia when he was a young teen. As any Beatles fan knows, both the pain of that loss & the yearning for her comforting presence in her unchangeable absence informs many of John's songs. Kasser delves into attachment theory, repression of personal pain, and the ways in which that pain insists on making itself felt anyway. In John's case, it was both in his personality (more often negatively) & in his creative work, which could express & artistically transmute that pain in a socially acceptable way for John.
My only caveat? I think Kasser tends to be a bit more reductive in his analysis than I'd prefer -- and this is simply my own personality speaking, nothing more than that! Several noted psychoanalytical names appear in the index, including that of Freud; and all of them deservedly so for Kasser's approach. The missing name is that of Jung -- it seems to me that an examination of Anima images in John's songs would have added yet another dimension to this otherwise smart, engaging book. But again, that's just me.

    Interesting and unexpected story
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this audiobook. It is well narrated and I love the tone of his voice reading the book. You can "imagine" some situations when you are listening to it.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Soul of It All?
Dicover the great human being he is. He explains his life, his carreer, his achievements and goals. He talks about his family with the hard and good times, as life itself. He is sincere explaining things you do not expect.
What does Michael Bolton bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Listen to his voice and the emotion he makes you feel.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me laugh and cry and think that you have to fight for whatever you want in this life and do not give up easily. And to keep yours near you.
    Really like Michael Bolton but........
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Love his singing voice but his speaking voice is dreary, flat and monotone. Could he not spare a little of the passion he displays in his singing into his reading?
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Soul of It All?
Finding out how he struggled for many years before achieving success.
How could the performance have been better?
    Have a different narrator.
If this book were a film would you go see it?
    Yes
