Good to know more of Libera

Listening to Libera is one thing, but knowing how it started is something magical. Indeed, you'll learn more of Libera through reading to the pages of Adrian Jeens, the Journey. So, if you really love Libera and want to know more about them, buy this book.

Concise and enjoyable!

After reading this book I came away with notion that Robert Prizeman is a genius. I doubt there are many people that could do what he has done over the past decades. I hope he keeps the "spark" for years to come!

A Worthy Course

This is the fifth music appreciation course I have taken from the Great Courses. I had no experience with music appreciation before beginning my education through these series of lectures. If you are like me and have little or no musical background, then I do not recommend starting with this particular course because the professor assumes some basic knowledge of terminology and music history. I strongly recommend beginning with Professor Greenburg's How to Listen to and Understand Great Music course before moving on to this one. If I have a complaint about this particular course, it would be that it is too short. The main topic omitted, which the professor openly admits, is music designed for congregational singing. In other words, this course focuses on music designed to be sung to the audience rather than music to be sung by the audience. So, this course omits most familiar religious songs commonly heard in church services. I wish the course was expanded to include enough lectures to incorporate this topic. That being said, this is still a wonderful course, and I learned a great deal such as the history of Handel's Messiah and Haydn's Creation. I purposely timed when I listened to this course so I could listen to the last lecture close to Christmas. The last lecture is by far the best and is dedicated to the history of Christmas music. The professor does a great job explaining the development of the Christmas music tradition.

Although some of the musical analysis was beyond my complete understanding, I enjoyed it and learned. Beyond that, the history, background and excerpts were most enjoyable.

History, music, and a personal story

The book moved right along: a window on the past in eastern Europe, insight into the life of an academic musician, historical notes on the baroque and classical periods in music, and a wonderful travel log. At times the author seemed to whine a bit, at others he tried to act the saint. The reader was not my favorite. But I still recommend this book, especially if you plan to visit Dresden or Vienna.

My idol and a FANTASTIC book!!!!

I've been an Adler fan since first hearing him on an old 78rpm record on my mom's old wind up victrola in the 1970's. This made me fall in love with the mouth organ (aka harmonica) & start playing it myself, eventually getting a chromatic one just like he played. This book is SO well written, and SO wonderful a read, that i only have one complaint. And that is that it's too short! Don't get me wrong. I mean that even if the book went on forever, it would STILL be too short! I bought the kindle version, as over 2,000 bucks for a book is a bit much. I don't know what's going on there. I'm seeing odd pricing like that a LOT here on amazon. To make a long story longer, if you are an Adler fan, you need this book! :)

UPDATE: The price for the physical book has now been changed to a MUCH more reasonable price. I guess reviews DO get read sometimes. :)

If you are looking for one of those plastic rock and roller autobiographies, look elsewhere. But if you are looking for a very fun read, then Looking for Lady Dee is one to pick up. Wendell tells the story as if he were a modern day bard spinning you a tale you wonât soon forget. The vivid descriptions, from the hole in the walls the leading character would stay at to the dingy dark rooms his band, the Thrills, played at, you soon feel like you are actually there. And the characters, like I said, you will feel transported there, and the characters will feel so real, that you will (by the end of the book) get to really like and hate some of them (like the infamous Nick Rowland).

Looking For Lady Dee is really a two-for-one deal here. Youâre not just getting what it was like to be a punk rocker, where you see what it was like to have a band in the heydays of punk in the late 70âs to the early 80âs, you also get a mystery tale thrown in revolving around the fate of a former lover/band mate. The whole book actually takes place in the present and in the past, where the various points in time connect, which I have to say this is hard to do without easily screwing up the whole story, but the author manages to pull it off exceedingly well.

The author is actually a prolific writer of both articles and song. It now looks like heâs entered the realm of books. Johnny Angel Wendell, this reader hopes you donât get lazy and stop writing more tales. Looking forward to see what else that chaotic cauldron of creativity comes up with next.

Anybody else catch the Charles Osgood files on the CBS Radio Network today about this famed jazz singer?

I had just started this book yesterday and finished this morning before heading into work which made it all the more remarkable when I heard tell of a brief mention of her on the radio as I was driving. Such a short, tragic life so full of promise but marred by poverty, rape, alcohol and heroin addiction. Glad she is still getting some recognition today and I plan on going home this evening and listening to more of her musical works including "Strange Fruit" , "Lover Man" and "Crazy He Calls Me" among others. One quote from 'Lady Day' I liked before I start the work day, "I'm always making a comeback, but nobody ever tells me where I've been." Very good book!

The woman, the legend!

An amazing account of her life. She was exceptional and yet so sad. If she wasn't being hurt she couldn't proform and this lead to the end of her life. Such a shame for the world to lose that beautiful voice. An awesome read.

easy read - insightful history

Painful, enlightening, insightful. She never knew the impact she had. The respect and influence was mostly realized after her death.

Love these books, they give one a grounding on the subject including all relevant facts with out being too long.

Just horrid

I love autobiographical books especially about music or musicians . However this was just horrible & just vile in places. I found the part when it described the murdering of a cat near the beginning extremely upsetting. I couldn't even finish listening to the end.

Sometimes Hilarious

If you could sum up Riff-Raff, Rebels & Rock Gods in three words, what would they be?

Honest , Funny, Cutting edge. I always used to get Sounds, every week from about 1978 until it finished. Mr Bushell was always funny in his reviews and interviews with the stars and not so well known of the day.

What did you like best about this story?

Remembering the way he would write the brtal truth about his exploits with the musos, Legendary drinkers Pete Way , Ozzy et al come across as comedians on stage and after seeing them a few times its true, they are a bunch of nutters. Pete is a really nice guy, i've met him a couple of times, offered him a free drink once and he refused !!! he was busy though. The Iron Maiden section is great and even the bits about Ska bands are goood to listen to although the musics not my pint of bitter. The relentless piss taking of the hapless Ross Halfin (Gross Halfwitt) is a joy to behold

What does Garry Bushell bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

Even more humour the way he reads it, I could invisage meself in a pub with Gal telling me these stories over several pints of Courage Directors and some cheese n onion crisps.

Laughed all the way through it, at some moments i had to pull the wagon into the side of the road and laugh.

If you liked Sounds in the 70's /80's, get this , its just what it used to be about, even down to the NME knocking, i did buy that thing once when they had AC/DC on the cover in the 90's. only time ever. Sounds was a big influence on my musical tastes and Geoff Barton and Gary were probably the biggest 2 writers that did influence me.

Love, Life, and Death, Southern Style, released in 2011 and re-released in his memory in 2014, in which he chronicled his time with the band and described the guilt that he felt for many years because of the deaths of four friends in the crash.

During the most important "tour" of his life - his one year battle with leukemia - he was very close to death several times and bounced back miraculously. The odds were stacked up against him, but he continued to be optimistic and refused to give up hope. Ron and Carolyn learned to find joy in the simple things in life and made the best of being confined to a hospital room for almost a full year. This isn't just a cancer story with a sad ending. It's a story of dreams, destiny, living every second to the fullest, and never giving up hope.

Where does The Last Tour rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

#1 - This is an incredible story. I read the book, too, several months ago, but when you hear the audio book it makes you focus on details you may have missed while reading.

What other book might you compare The Last Tour to and why?

I can't think of one that comes close to comparing. I am excited to see the movie when it comes out.

What does Carol Purdom bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

She did very well and it was very consistent. You can really feel the authors emotions and feelings. You feel like you know both the author and Ronnie by the end of the book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

both laugh and cry, and made me feel like i was in a zone, very focused

Any additional comments?

I recommend it to anyone who has any feelings at all. It will bring out all your emotions and make you feel like you know the two main characters.
