    Publisher's Summary:
Michelle Williams, an attractive young woman with close family ties and an active social life, describes her first extraordinary year in her unusual new job as a mortuary technician. Its a year in which, with innate good humour, she encounters death at its most tragic, bizarre, and hilarious. Her tale, neither gruesome nor sad, is enlivened by a range of colourful and eccentric characters, from pathologists and coroners to hospital porters and undertakers, giving us a glimpse of life - and death - that few of us will ever experience.

Shelly was my favorite character, her views and insights to the other characters was great!
Which character as performed by Liz Holliss was your favorite?
    Shelly
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I found the story very interesting to learn about what goes on in a mortuary
    Any additional comments?
It is a good read, not bloody or gory but very informative.
    Compelling
The further into the story the more engaged I became. At first I thought the story was just ok. The more I listened the more endearing the accent and British colloquialisms became. I became more enamoured with the narrator- both author's voice and the reader's physical voice won me over. It was an easy, enjoyable, humorous, and educational listen.
    Curious and Satisfying
Very nicely and neatly told. I enjoyed getting to know Shelley and the crew. This book was informative and interesting, not gruesome in the least. I think it's important to understand what happens in the morgue to demystify it and quell the feeling of taboo.
    Subtle, sensitive and personal account
This is a sensitive account of a grim, but necessary job, told by a technician from her novice first days on the job through many years of service. Excellent narration and pace, with great stories in a small town UK setting. Well done. Great listen.
    Mediocre at best
I find the author a little too patronising of her colleagues and "clients" if I'm honest. An interesting read/listen, but not well written.

    Publisher's Summary:
Audie Award Nominee, Biography and Memoir, 2013
Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey tells the story behind Highclere Castle, the real-life inspiration and setting for Julian Fellowes's Emmy Award-winning PBS series, and the life of one of its most famous inhabitants: Lady Almina, the fifth Countess of Carnarvon.
Drawing on a rich store of materials from the archives of Highclere Castle, including diaries, letters, and photographs, the current Lady Carnarvon has written a transporting story of this fabled home on the brink of war. Much like her Masterpiece Classic counterpart Lady Cora Crawley, Lady Almina was the daughter of a wealthy industrialist, Alfred de Rothschild, who married his daughter off at a young age, her dowry serving as the crucial link in the effort to preserve the Earl of Carnarvon's ancestral home. Throwing open the doors of Highclere Castle to tend to the wounded of World War I, Lady Almina distinguished herself as a brave and remarkable woman.
This rich tale contrasts the splendor of Edwardian life in a great house against the backdrop of the First World War and offers an inspiring and revealing picture of the woman at the center of the history of Highclere Castle.
    Critic Reviews:
"Gives the juicy back story behind last year's Emmy-winning Masterpiece Theater drama." (The New York Times)
"If you cant wait for the new season of Downton Abbey... this one's for you.... a revealing portrait of the changing times." (New York Post)
"The present Lady Carnarvon, who tapped the family archives for her comprehensive research, dramatically captures the estate during the pre-war and war years, and paints a compelling... portrait of Lady Almina." (Newark Star-Ledger)
"Wanda McCaddon invites listeners into the Countess of Carnarvons breezy book, which blends a wealth of archival letters, diaries, and photographs. McCaddon sweeps through the transitions between the downstairs servants and the socially elite, details of furniture and costumes, as well as the changes that come with WWI." (AudioFile)
    Members Reviews:
    Fascinating
As a fan of the "Downton Abbey" series, I picked this selection on a complete, total lark. I expected it to be lightweight, fun, and not much more than a marketing exploitation based on the new fame of the series. Instead I found a completely interesting story of lives, society and a time, enveloped and transformed not only by the tragedy of WWI, but also by the discovery of King Tut's tomb. Not only well done and interesting, but the narrator, Wanda McCaddon. is fabulous and completely appropriate to the story. Really enjoyed this.
    the lowdown on Downton times
This is not exactly Downton Abbey fan fiction -- it has more substance than that. But in the intro the author rightly states that she's not writing history, biography or a novel --it's sort of a combo of all those genres - and as much about the estate as the Countess. It wouldn't succeed as strictly bio, novel or history, but take the listen for what it is-- splendid background to late Victoriana transitioning to Edwardian and beyond. I think it would be really useful listening for fans of historical fiction or period novels who might not "get" some of the references to the times when they made obliquely.

    Title: The Hand of God
Subtitle: A Journey from Death to Life by the Abortion Doctor Who Changed His Mind
    Author: Bernard N. Nathanson
    Narrator: Kevin Charles Minatrea
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 51 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-07-12
    Publisher: Regnery Publishing
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 31 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
As director of the world's largest abortion clinic and the nation's most prominent abortionist, Dr. Bernard Nathanson presided over 60,000 abortions. As co-founder of the National Abortion Rights Action League, he helped make abortion legal. Then, in a conversion that made headkines and astonished both sides of the abortion debate, he renounced his profession to become a pro-life advocate.
But Dr. Nathanson's journey was not over. In this deeply personal memoir, he reveals what led a lifelong atheist and abortion crusader first to the pro-life cause, and finally to Christianity.
    Members Reviews:
    Incredible
Overall it's informative and brings a lot to light on the abortion industry. You can tell he's slanted to pro life but I appreciate how he explains pro life and pro choice thinking processes because he was so pro choice before.
In the beginning it has a lot of medical jargon so I had to pray I could get through it haha but then the author started to talk about how he grew up and talked about his experience becoming a doctor and going through college. Then I felt like I got sucked into the book.
He later describes more medical things so I was a bit confused from time to time but he still explained personal and public events powerfully.
A Vast Perspective on the History of Abortion
This book is not easy listening, but it is important listening. Dr. Nathanson was a very erudite and educated man and his vocabulary and literary references are rich, but his story built my understanding of the thinking process that took place in the early days of legal abortion and how it became entrenched in the minds of Americans. It also covers the history of abortion from ancient times to the present and shows perspectives on both the pro-choice and pro-life sides. It was also difficult to listen to the parts of the book that dealt with the horrifying details of abortion techniques, but the truth of that must be told. I was especially interested in the story of Dr. Nathanson's lifelong quest for God, a quest he didn't even know he was on until very late in life. The happy ending of the story in St. Patrick's cathedral when he was baptized by Cardinal O'Connor brought a tear to my eye. What surprised and puzzled me the most about this book, however, is how anyone could still be in favor of legal abortion after Dr. Nathanson's story was made known in the 1980s. He was one of the people whose influence most turned the tide toward widespread abortion, but his voice was all but drowned out when he cried out to stop it. Overall, this was a riveting tale of a tragic life which ended in spiritual triumph.
A Scientific and Spiritual Defense of Life
This book is a scientific & spiritual defense of life. For most pro-abortion activists this book will be ignored... for to read the truth will make their life a lie but for those with doubts, this book is a must read. For the believer of all life is sacred, this book is an affirmation of their beliefs and gives armor in the ongoing war against human life.
    Sensational but falls short
I am an evangelical Christian and a physician. I looked forward to this but was disappointed. Nathanson ignores much science on stem cells and for that matter the progress of science in defending as he calls it life.

    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 522 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In this captivating memoir, Deborah Feldman takes listeners on an eye-opening journey into Orthodox Jewish culture. Raised in the suffocating world of Brooklyns Satmar Hasidim, Feldman was told what to read and who she was allowed to talk to. Married off at 17, she suffered from anxiety and was shamed by an inability to please her older husband. But after giving birth to a son at age 19, Feldman realized it was time to tear up her roots and make her own path in life.
    Critic Reviews:
Deborah Feldman was raised in an insular, oppressive world where she was taught that, as a woman, she wasnt capable of independent thought. But she found the pluck and determination needed to make the break from that world and has written a brave, riveting account of her journey.
Unorthodox is harrowing, yet triumphant. (Jeannette Walls, #1 bestselling author of
    The Glass Castle and
    Half Broke Horses)
Feldman gives us special insight into a closed and repressive world. . . . Her memoir is fresh and tart and utterly absorbing. (
    Library Journal)
Nicely written . . . [An] engaging and at times gripping insight into Brooklyn's Hasidic community. (
    Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    A one-sided glimpse into a secretive world
Having lived an observant lifestyle for a very short time in my youth, I was not completely blindsided by the Hasidic way of life portrayed in Unorthodox.
So with a bit of background I delved into Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots. The first half of Unorthodox explores the customs, laws and lifestyles of Satmar Hasidim. The reader learns about this extreme sect of Jews and this sets the scene for Feldmans reason for her escape to a less oppressive western culture. She explains how she felt as a child growing up and then as a young woman in this bizarro world where she felt repressed, unclean, and more of a tool for making babies than an equal partner in a marriage.
While reading this book, I had to remember that this is Feldmans account of what happened around her. It doesnt represent all of the Satmar Hasidim. Her father had a mental illness and her mother left her to be raised by her grandparents. Right off, this sets the scene for a dysfunctional life. She ends up in an arranged marriage, which is the norm, but her husband is a mamas boy, lazy and insensitive. Gee, I know lots of guys like that and they arent Satmars at all! So Feldman ends up in a bad marriage with its share of problems, the primary one being sexual. Since they are both virgins when they marry, they need to discover sex as a couple, something that could be very special, but for these two it ends up being gross and convoluted, again, not necessarily a Satmar problem. Deborah and her husband Eli are misfits and she looks for ways to escape and find happiness elsewhere.
Many people settle for a miserable existence and this is where I have to give Feldman credit. She left her family, friends, husband and the only life she knew and escaped to unchartered waters where she hoped she could live a more fulfilling and happy life. That takes courage and guts.
Unorthodox is written as a one-sided glimpse into the enclosed secretive world of extreme Orthodoxy. Feldman airs the dirty laundry of this eccentric, sacred club, which is not all that different from any extreme religious group.

    Interesting, moving story
Would you listen to A Chance in the World again? Why?
Yes. It was interesting and gave reason to be appreciative about your own life events. I'd lsiten again just to be sure I had'nt missed anything. I listenend to the story as quickly as I could.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The teacher who gave him a place to stay after he ran away from his adoptive family. Because he had little time to realize just what he might have been getting into. He simple wanted to help a kid in need.
    Which scene was your favorite?
When he talked about his own family. His relationship with his wife and children. How his past had'nt ruined a good person.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
That he found a way to survive by reading alone in the basement. When he realized that life should be different from what he'd seen
    Any additional comments?
It was a great listen. Great story!!!
    A riveting story...
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Steve Pemberton's story of his life -- especially as a young boy in the social services system is heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. Listening in my car one evening, I actually had to pull over after a particularly disturbing account.
    Any additional comments?
Everyone should read (or listen to) this book.
Excellent listen! I could not stop listening!
A powerful and inspiring autobiography. This life story indeed should motivate an individual change (no more excuses); it should also serve as a catalyst for many to want to improve a broken system.
I have recommended this book to many individuals and groups.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 38 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-23-11
    Publisher: Tyndale Audio
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 92 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Abby Johnson quit her job in October 2009. That simple act became a national news story because Abby was the director of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Texas who, after participating in her first actual abortion procedure, crossed the line to join the Coalition for Life.
Unplanned is a heartstopping personal drama of life-and-death encounters, a courtroom battle, and spiritual transformation that speaks hope and compassion into the political controversy that surrounds this issue. Telling Abbys story from both sides of the abortion-clinic property line, this book is a must-have for anyone who cares about the life-versus-rights debate and helping women who face crisis pregnancies.
    Members Reviews:
    Increased my Understanding
What did you like best about this story?
My greatest take-away from this book was the insight and understanding it gave me toward people who work in the abortion industry. I have been praying on the sidewalks in front of abortion centers for 18 years, but the people who work in the centers have been a mystery to me for the most part. Abby gave me a look inside their world and inspired in me greater feelings of compassion and understanding for them.
What does Abby Clark bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Abby Clark has a youthful vivacious voice that sounds like the young college student with a heart for helping others that Abby Johnson was.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The description of how Abby Johnson felt when she saw the ultrasound abortion, her account of the day she left Planned Parenthood, and her story of suffering through a medical abortion all were riveting and revealing moments.
    Any additional comments?
I am so very glad I heard this story. It has made me a better pro-life advocate with a deeper and more heartfelt longing to reach out to everyone hurt by abortion, including those who work in abortion centers. There are really no "enemies" in this culture war, only victims who need understanding, love and healing.
    Amazing story, very well read
What did you love best about Unplanned?
The reader did a spectacular job reading this book in an enthusiastic, lively, heart-wrnenching but not overly dramatic way. The book was very well-written, and presents one woman's story about her life within Planned Parenthood and then out of it.
What did you like best about this story?
I like how the author presents the story with compassion and understanding for both sides. It is a contentious issue, and people often forget that both sides believe what they believe because they want the best for women. They just come at it from different perspectives.
Which character as performed by Abby Clark was your favorite?
Abby performs Abby Johnson best. She does a great job just being natural.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. I didn't want to stop listening. I only did to go to sleep!
    Fantastic Read!
This story was such a page turner and so humbly insightful! I enjoyed every minute of it and got soooo much out of it! I recommend it to everyone, no matter what your background or beliefs are! Something in it for everyone!
    Life-changing story!
Abby's story although much different than mine it is much the same.

    Publisher's Summary:
It has been over twenty years since the publication of The Ragamuffin Gospel, a book many claim as the shattering of God's grace into their lives. Since that time, Brennan Manning has been dazzingly faithful in preaching and writing variations on that singular theme, Yes, Abba is very fond of you!
But today the crowds are gone and the lights are dim, the patches on his knees have faded. If he ever was a ragamuffin, truly it is now. In this his final book, Brennan roves back his past, honoring the lives of the people closest to him, family and friends who've known the saint and the sinner, the boy and the man. Far from some chronological timeline, these memories are witness to the truth of life by one who has lived it.
    Members Reviews:
    shipwrecked at the stable door
I heard Manning speak at a Franciscan youth conference in the mid 1970s-- His message and delivery were technically brilliant, but completely undone by his obvious hung-over state; he was completely inauthentic to my then young ears at a time when I was looking for excuses to turn away from faith. A dozen years later I came across his small but powerful, "Jesus, Stranger to Self Hatred." Out of about 3000 books encountered in my life, it has to be in my top ten for its effect on me.
In many ways I disagree with Manning's theology, he repeated himself in too many books, and his prose can be pompously ragamuffin too -- but he communicates his utter confidence in the unconditional love of God so strongly that none of that matters. Maurice England narrates the memoir well, but I wish Manning could have spoken this, his final book. For me "All Is Grace" serves as closure to that despised performance I witnessed 40 years ago. God writes straight on many hearts through the crooked lines of Manning's life. This four hours is well worth listening, as the man who has described himself as "shipwrecked at the stable" sketches some of those lines.
    All is Grace
This book is refreshing because it shares the life of a man who has the courage and vulnerability to take off all religious masks and embrace his humanity while also sharing his heart's desire to know God and the grace that works powerfully in his life.
    All is Grace
Thank you Father for Brennan's life, his incredible story, and the courage to write it.
What is The Tell-Tale sign of a trusting heart.
All I have is thanks and gratitude.
    Forgiven hearts forgive
Everyone should read this book. Believe that God loves you just as you are not as you should be. Grace is for the messy.
    God's grace is sufficient
A Ragamuffin Memoir was a good read. It gave a great cross-denominational perspective of God's forgiveness and the power of His grace.

    Publisher's Summary:
After nine years serving on the staff of a big urban church in Atlanta, Barbara Brown Taylor arrives in rural Clarkesville, Georgia (population 1,500), following her dream to become the pastor of her own small congregation. The adjustment from city life to country dweller is something of a shock - Taylor is one of the only professional women in the community - but small-town life offers many of its own unique joys. Taylor has five successful years that see significant growth in the church she serves, but ultimately she finds herself experiencing "compassion fatigue" and wonders what exactly God has called her to do. She realizes that in order to keep her faith she may have to leave.
Taylor describes a rich spiritual journey in which God has given her more questions than answers. As she becomes part of the flock instead of the shepherd, she describes her poignant and sincere struggle to regain her footing in the world without her defining collar. Taylor's realization that this may in fact be God's surprising path for her leads her to a refreshing search to find Him in new places. Leaving Church will remind even the most skeptical among us that life is about both disappointment and hope - and ultimately, renewal.

    Worth the listen
I listened to Barbara Brown Taylor read her book, Learning to Walk in the Dark before I listened to this book. This one doesn't have as tight prose, but it's still good with lots of good stuff in it. Also, the reader was a little more saccharine? naive? than I prefer for the content, but that might just be because of how I expect that Barbara Brown Taylor would have read.
    Extraordinary!
Would you consider the audio edition of Leaving Church to be better than the print version?
I did not read the print version
What was one of the most memorable moments of Leaving Church?
When BBT began speaking of the difference between the life of faith and the life of "Mother Church," and the demands Mother Church places on the person of faith -- demands which can negatively nuance the person's faith walk.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
I loved the fact that the reader had some characteristics (like over-pronounced consonants at the ends of words) that characterize BBT's speaking style. I did not care for the reader's predictable inflections, which gave the narration a "sing-song" quality.
    Well Read -- Little Long
Good autobiography of her calling and discernment. Some of the nuggets got lost in the over writing of details and story telling that took away from the narrative.
    loved it,
Well written. Helps one to get out of the traditional "safe" boxes of life to enter into the greater life that God has offered to each of us.

I like the story , only thing I don't like
Is the narrator, I just despise moist sounding noises, and her voice is moist!
    Excellent book
Where does Chinese Cinderella rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
One of the best Audiable books I have purchased. My boom club really enjoyed discussing the courage this girl showed
What other book might you compare Chinese Cinderella to and why?
    Not sure
What about Felice Yehs performance did you like?
That she never gave up trying under terribly cruel situations.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me feel stronger and realize how fortunate I am. It made cry.
    Any additional comments?
A great book for an English teacher at high school level to teach from. A must read for schools not sure
    must be for children
I didn't see anything to tell me this was for children, but it must be. The narration is like reading to a 3 year old and the story is nothing new.
