Title: The Craft We Chose: My Life in the CIA
    Author: Richard L. Holm
    Narrator: Christopher Strong
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 19 hrs and 27 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-06-13
    Publisher: D Street Books
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 85 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Many books, fiction and nonfiction alike, purport to probe the inner workings of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. Many attempt to create spine-tingling suspense or allege that America's civilian spy operation has run amok and been infested with rogues and criminals. Not that
    The Craft We Chose
The Craft We Chose is more than a chronicle of those episodes. It also reveals Holm's private life, his roots and family, his courtship and marriage, and his four daughters, whom he affectionately calls his platoon. Webster's Dictionary defines the word holm as an island in a stream. That is an appropriate analogy. The Craft We Chose reveals Richard Holm as an island of steadfastness in a stream of chaos. He served his country with distinction, in good times and bad, displaying extreme courage under the direst of circumstances and a sense of honor that can only be considered unshakeable. And he describes it all with a keen eye and a distinctive wit. His is a classic American story that conveys, vividly and unforgettably, a life in the CIA.

    Good Background
I struggled a bit with the book due to the excruciating amount of detail describing events. I understanf the story telling portion but could have been a bit more condense and to the point on some of them. What is up with the foreing accents and tones? Couldn't get pass the condescending accents. Great message to new folks joining this line of work and great situational awarness for the public in general.
    Not what I expected
What started out as a slow read/listen? Turned into a great experience. I loved listening to the narrator deliver the story. There was something about his voice that made it easy to imagine what was going on, and it made me want more. The story is not all spy games, or crazy espionage. Just one man's life in the CIA. I enjoyed the personal aspect of it. I thought it was a great story to listen to.
    Fascinating story
I enjoyed this book very much. It shares an interesting perspective of recent history and the inner workings of the CIA. Certainly, the author displays much unexamined privilege in his narrative and point of view and though I do not agree with all of it, I found it enriching.
    Not a Spy Story
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No. This was a long uneventful book about the employment history of a CIA employee. Thats is it. With the exception of a horrific accident he had to recover from, there is no stories about espionage, intrigue, or covert operations.
Has The Craft We Chose: My Life in the CIA put you off other books in this genre?
    no
How could the performance have been better?
    yes
Do you think The Craft We Chose: My Life in the CIA needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
    please no
Outstanding history and memoir of CIA from basic training to Laos, Vietnam and post Cold War.
An outstanding book. Honest and objective. Excellent segments on CIA recruitment and training. The Vietnam war and Laos and Cambodia through to the Middle East and Europe doting the Cold War.

    Title: The World's Strongest Librarian
Subtitle: A Memoir of Tourette's, Faith, Strength, and the Power of Family
    Author: Josh Hanagarne
    Narrator: Stephen R. Thorne
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 34 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-02-13
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 681 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
At first glance, Josh Hanagarne seems an improbable librarian. He stands 6'7", competes in strongman contests, and was diagnosed in high school with Tourette's syndrome. But books are his first love - Josh's earliest memories involve fantastic adventures between the pages of Gullivers Travels and a passionate infatuation with Fern from Charlottes Web. Everything in Joshs life - from his Mormon upbringing, to finally finding love, to learning to control his tics through lifting - circles back to a close connection with books. Today, Josh is a librarian at the Salt Lake City Public Library, founder of a popular blog about books and weight lifting - and the proud father of four-year-old Max, who has already started to show his own symptoms of Tourette's.
The Worlds Strongest Librarian illuminates the mysteries of this little-understood disorder as well as the very different worlds of strongman training and modern libraries. With humor and candor, this unlikely hero traces his journey to overcome his disability, navigate his wavering Mormon faith, spread the word about the wonder of books, and ultimately, find love and create a life worth living.

Forthright, affecting, and sometimes surprisingly funny. (Library Journal)

    Something Different, Something Wonderful
I love a book that takes me out of my world and plants me right into a new world, and teaches me something I didn't know that I needed to know. This book delivers, I'm so glad it was written and that I read it. Laugh out loud funny, poignant and truthful. Can't get much better than that.
Funny, poignant, human, embarrassing, & triumphant
There have been some great personal memoirs written lately by people who walk amongst us, not rich, famous, or powerful, but simply people who share their lives. In comparison to some autobiographies I've read written by famous people, I have to say that the regular folks who have written their stories have written better books. (Well, with the exception of William Shatner . . . he writes a pretty good memoir)
Josh Hanagame writes gracefully and humbly of his life and sometimes it is painful to be with him as he shares less-than-graceful moments, but other times I burst out laughing, and felt twinges of pride and triumph for him too.
Books give us a chance to squeeze more experiences and thoughts into one lifetime, and I feel enriched by what Josh shared of his life.
The narration by Stephen R. Thorne is perfect - he has a kind voice with a quiet undertone of humanity and humor.
He had me at a word I doubt I can publish!
Where does The World's Strongest Librarian rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Near the top! I love books, fitness, and libraries. I knew very little about Tourette's, and Josh has such a hilarious and introspective way of looking at life that I ate this book nearly whole and started recommending it after only half an hour!
Josh was raised Mormon, but wrestled with very real questions about God and his church. he has a very blunt way of describing his faith journey - the highs and the lows - without either preaching or disrespecting it. it added a terrific illuminating aspect to the book.
What about Stephen R. Thornes performance did you like?
He was AWESOME! He "became" Josh.

    Format: Unabridged

    Release date: 03-05-13
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 295 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Pat Summitt, the all-time winningest coach in NCAA basketball history and best-selling author of Reach for the Summitt and Raise the Roof, tells for the first time her remarkable story of victory and resilience as well as facing down her greatest challenge: early-onset Alzheimer's disease.
Pat Summitt was only 21 when she became head coach of the Tennessee Vols women's basketball team. For 38 years, she has broken records, winning more games than any NCAA team in basketball history. She has coached an undefeated season, co-captained the first women's Olympic team, was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, and has been named Sports Illustrated "Sportswoman of the Year".
She owes her coaching success to her personal struggles and triumphs. She learned to be tough from her strict, demanding father. Motherhood taught her to balance that rigidity with communication and kindness. She is a role model for the many women she's coached; 74 of her players have become coaches.
Pat's life took a shocking turn in 2011, when she was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease, an irreversible brain condition that affects 5 million Americans. Despite her devastating diagnosis, she led the Vols to win their 16th SEC championship in March 2012. Pat continues to be a fighter, facing this new challenge the way she's faced every other - with hard work, perseverance, and a sense of humor.

The Incredible Story of an Incredible Individual
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is an easy recommendation to anyone that wants to be inspired. Pat Head Summitt rose from essentially nothing to be one of, if not THE, best at her chosen profession. She has shaped thousands of people both directly and indirectly and this book offers a great level of insight into what made her who she is.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Sum It Up?
There are too many to mention. The construction of the book, forgoing stats and records in favor of anecdotes and descriptions of the people that were behind the wins and losses, lends itself to the audiobook format. The interspersed recollections of the people around Summitt add perspective and help ground the stories and create a flowing narrative that leads you through an amazing life and career.
What does Sally Jenkins bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
This book was constructed by Jenkins, based upon conversations and interviews with Summitt. Having Jenkins read to you is almost like sitting in on those conversations. Because of her closeness to Summitt she is able to add a level of empathy and compassion that might not come through in the straight written word.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Summitt's love for her players and her son, for her entire University of Tennessee family, flows through the narrative and is inescapable. Descriptions of motivational speeches to players and the passion with which she communicates her beliefs had me ready to run through a wall for her.
    Any additional comments?
The story of Pat Summitt transcends basketball or the university to which she gave so much of her life. It is a story of conviction and dedication to excellence.

  • Heads in Beds Audiobook by Jacob Tomsky

    Title: Heads in Beds
Subtitle: A Reckless Memoir of Hotels, Hustles, and So-Called Hospitality
    Author: Jacob Tomsky
    Narrator: Jacob Tomsky
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 8 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-20-12
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 761 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In the tradition of Kitchen Confidential and Waiter Rant, a rollicking, eye-opening, fantastically indiscreet memoir of a life spent (and misspent) in the hotel industry.
Jacob Tomsky has worked in hotels for more than a decade, doing everything from valet parking to manning the front desk. He's checked you in, checked you out, separated your white panties from the white bed sheets, parked your car, tasted your room service, cleaned your toilet, denied you a late check out, given you a wake-up call, eaten M&Ms out of your mini-bar, laughed at your jokes, and taken your money. And in Heads in Beds, he pulls back the curtain on the hospitality business, revealing the crazy yet compelling reality of an industry we think we know. It is an incredibly funny, authentic, and irreverent chronicle of the highs and lows of hotel life and boy, is there a market for it: in 2010, the American lodging industry generated $127.7 billion in revenue. Prepare to be amused, shocked, and amazed as he spills the unwritten code of the bellhops, the antics that go on the valet parking garage, and the housekeeping department's dirty little secrets.
Prepare to be moved, too, by his insightful honesty about the profession; employees are often poorly paid and frequently abused. However, Heads in Beds is more than just a memoir. Jake explains the secrets of the industry, offering easy and legal ways to get what you need from your hotel without any hassle - from scoring late check-ins and upgrades to getting that pay-per-view charge knocked off your bill. This book will give you the knowledge you need to get the very best service from any hotel or property, from any business that makes its money from putting heads in beds. Or, at the very least, it will keep the bellhops from taking your luggage into the camera-free back office and stomping the crap out of it.
    Critic Reviews:
"Jacob Tomsky is a star. The kid writes like a dream. Heads in Beds is hilarious, literate, canny, indignant and kind - revealing an author who manages somehow to be both a total hustler and a complete humanitarian. I love this book. Keep an eye on this writer. I'm telling you, he's a star." (Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia)

    The presidential suite of audiobooks
I travel on business a lot. I stay in hotels over 150 nights a year. This book was not only entertaining and a pleasure to listen to (Thomsky is a natural reader/actor/performer), it gave me some real insight and tips for how I should approach my stays in hotels. Funny as hell. Full of interesting stories. And the author experienced something of a dramatic arc from beginning to end. Very well done.
    credit worthy
Novel view of the hotel and service industries. It kept my attention and made me laugh.
    Entertaining & Informative
This is how an "industry insider" book should be done - exactly the right mix of industry secrets, hilarious anecdotes, and personal details all wrapped up in a neat package. Bravo to the author for his wit, his willingness to dish the dirt, and the wisdom to narrate it himself. I can't wait to try out the mini-bar trick to see if it works (maybe I'll try it in a friend's room first).

    For all us hopeless romantics!
Where does Love Letters of Great Men rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I actually set up an Audible account just to get this title.
    Any additional comments?
    This is one of a handful of real life books that were created because of the fictional book of the same name that appeared on Sex And The City. This one stood out to me for two main reasons;
    1. I liked that it contained a back story on each of the 'great men'. That added a lot of depth and context to the letters (critical ingredients to true romance in my opinion!).
    2. The narration seemed very superior on this one compared to the others. And indeed, the letters were certainly very well performed. Each letter was read 'in character', and that really added to my enjoyment of them.
    Very well done!

    Title: Danger to Self
Subtitle: On the Front Line with an ER Psychiatrist
    Author: Paul R. Linde
    Narrator: Kirby Heyborne
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 2 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-08-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 109 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
The psychiatric emergency room, a fast-paced combat zone with pressure to match, thrusts its medical providers into the outland of human experience where they must respond rapidly and decisively in spite of uncertainty and, very often, danger. In this lively first-person narrative, Paul R. Linde takes listeners behind the scenes at an urban psychiatric emergency room, with all its chaos and pathos, where we witness mental health professionals doing their best to alleviate suffering and repair shattered lives.
As he and his colleagues encounter patients who are hallucinating, drunk, catatonic, aggressive, suicidal, high on drugs, paranoid, and physically sick, Linde examines the many ethical, legal, moral, and medical issues that confront today's psychiatric providers. He describes a profession under siege from the outside - health insurance companies, the pharmaceutical industry, government regulators, and even "patients' rights" advocates - and from the inside - biomedical and academic psychiatrists who have forgotten to care for the patient and have instead become checklist-marking pill-peddlers.
While lifting the veil on a crucial area of psychiatry that is as real as it gets, Danger to Self also injects a healthy dose of compassion into the practice of medicine and psychiatry.
    Members Reviews:
    Fascinating
The perfect accompaniment to my final few weeks of a nursing school acute inpatient psychiatric rotation. It was fascinating to see the process of the psychiatrist's thinking and to recognize how that differed from the nursing process I was learning.
    Terrible narration
What would have made Danger to Self better?
I want to hear the book and strongly dislike narrators who fancy them selves actors with accents and over the top inflection in their voice.
    Any additional comments?
As soon as I hit the narrators obnoxious rendition of a woman's southern accent I had to turn it off. Like nails on a chalkboard.
Comprhensive Interesting Look at ER Psychiatry
I really enjoyed this book about an ER Psychiatrist. In addition to providing interesting case studies, the book touched on the practice of psychiatry, as well as legal and social issues. I felt that it provided a comprehensive look at the experience of the author in his field. This is one of the better books I have read on the subject.
    Could be shorter
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I liked three or four chapters about the cases, but other chapters go off on to a lot of cut and paste quotes about the industry and they are dull. Could be half as big.Really need a case like Hannibal Lector but I guess that is not really what goes on.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Aspects about Meth addiction, and comment on how doctors withhold treatment when resources are scarce.
Do you think Danger to Self needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
    nope
Nice to know there are physicians who care
What did you love best about Danger to Self?
Despite how stressful the author's position is and how easy it is to burn out in his field, he still cares deeply for his patients and it shows in how he speaks about his career.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Danger to Self?
His description of a homeless man trying to be polite in turning down an inpatient treatment program for alcoholism.

Title: The End of Your Life Book Club
    Author: Will Schwalbe
    Narrator: Jeff Harding
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 40 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-02-12
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 638 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
    "What are you reading?"
That's the question Will Schwalbe asks his mother, Mary Anne, as they sit in the waiting room of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. In 2007, Mary Anne returned from a humanitarian trip to Pakistan and Afghanistan suffering from what her doctors believed was a rare type of hepatitis. Months later she was diagnosed with a form of advanced pancreatic cancer, which is almost always fatal, often in six months or less.
This is the inspiring true story of a son and his mother, who start a "book club" that brings them together as her life comes to a close. Over the next two years, Will and Mary Anne carry on conversations that are both wide-ranging and deeply personal, prompted by an eclectic array of books and a shared passion for reading. Their list jumps from classic to popular, from poetry to mysteries, from fantastic to spiritual. The issues they discuss include questions of faith and courage as well as everyday topics such as expressing gratitude and learning to listen. Throughout, they are constantly reminded of the power of books to comfort us, astonish us, teach us, and tell us what we need to do with our lives and in the world. Reading isn't the opposite of doing; it's the opposite of dying.
Will and Mary Anne share their hopes and concerns with each other - and rediscover their lives - through their favorite books. When they read, they aren't a sick person and a well person, but a mother and a son taking a journey together. The result is a profoundly moving tale of loss that is also a joyful, and often humorous, celebration of life: Will's love letter to his mother, and theirs to the printed page.
    Critic Reviews:
"With a refreshing forthrightness, and an excellent list of books included, this is an astonishing, pertinent, and wonderfully welcome work." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)
"A wonderful book about wonderful books and mothers and sons and the enduring braid between them. Like the printed volumes it celebrates, this story will stay with you long after the last page." (Mitch Albom, author of Tuesdays with Morrie and The Time Keeper)
"Will Schwalbe's lyrical tribute to a life well-lived and a death graced with love and literature is a precious gift bestowed on all of us. What a unique and beautiful book this is, and how privileged we are to have it." (Sherwin B. Nuland, author of The Art of Aging and How We Die)

    Loved this book
Loved this book. Of course the subject of illness is difficult but I loved how this family dealt with illness, treatments and end of life. Good review of so many books that you may have read or meant to read. One of my year's favorite books.
    Decent, but not earth-shattering
I really wanted to like this book, and I did in a lot of ways. If you approach it as just one guy's story about his mom and what his family was doing, thinking, and reading during his mom's battle with cancer (without any huge epiphanies or off-the-wall adventures or stunning realizations), you'll like it much better than if you're approaching it for sweeping insights.

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 573 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Running for My Life is not a story about Africa or track and field athletics. It is about outrunning the devil and achieving the impossible: faith, diligence, and the desire to give back. It is the American dream come true and a stark reminder that saving one can help to save thousands more.
Lopez Lomong chronicles his inspiring ascent from a barefoot lost boy of the Sudanese Civil War to a Nike sponsored athlete on the US Olympic Team. Though most of us fall somewhere between the catastrophic lows and dizzying highs of Lomong's incredible life, every reader will find in his story the human spark to pursue dreams that might seem unthinkable, even from circumstances that might appear hopeless.
    Critic Reviews:
"Lopez Lomong's story is one of true inspiration. His life is a story of courage, hard work, never giving up, and having hope where there is hopelessness all around. Lopez is a true role model." (Michael Johnson, Olympic gold medalist)
"This true story of a Sudanese child refugee who became an Olympic star is powerful proof that God gives hope to the hopeless and shines a light in the darkest places. Don't be surprised if after reading this incredible tale, you find yourself mysteriously drawn to run alongside him." (Richard Stearns, president of World Vision US and author of The Hole in Our Gospel)
    Members Reviews:
    Interesting and Inspirational
STORY - This is a true story which begins with the kidnapping of a six-year-old boy (Lopez Lomong) from his family's church in Sudan. It ends with his graduation from college in the U.S. after competing as an American citizen in the Seoul Olympic Games. The story in between is sometimes heartbreaking and sometimes humorous, but the message is clear: If you set your goals high, work hard and believe in yourself and God, anything is within your reach.
I do not usually enjoy nonfiction, especially autobiographies, but this book was very enjoyable. After I finished, I found myself surfing the internet for more information about Lopez, his accomplishments and his charities. The story is never boring or overly detailed, but it is sometimes a bit slow. Nevertheless, I am glad I had a chance to hear it and receive its message.
NARRATION - Good job, but nothing special.
OVERALL - I recommend this book to anyone who thinks they might enjoy a good biography. I would actually rate this a 3.5 overall.
    Absolutely Amazing and Inspirational Story
This is the story of a boy born in South Sudan that overcomes many obstacles through life. He endures kidnapping, a refugee camp, and is blessed to end up in the US. Running is a major part of his life, but his faith in God is truly the one thing that keeps him focused. He believes God has placed every person in his life and every situation there for a reason.
The book does not have any graphic scenes, but situations are described in a way that you get the point. Lopez does a wonderful job explaining everything from his childhood, his experience in coming to the US, learning about very basic things that we take for granted (such as a light switch), and his road to achieving his goals.
    The narrator grew on me.

This book is hysterically funny for the first half and just plain funny in the second half. The father's advice is uproarious and the counter point of the mother just can't be topped. I was on a crowded Amtrak train coming back from NYC and I was laughing so hard, I thought the conductor was going to put me off midway. This book is really about the travails of the author finding and figuring out whether he should or should not propose to his girlfriend.
This book is going to appeal far more to men than to woman. It isn't that the book is sexist, it's because it written from a very male point of view. Think sophomoric humor. If you like that type of humor and gutter language, you'll be fine.
For me, I found it funny. If you liked his first book and the TV show, you'll like his second. Thumbs up.
Not as good as Sh*t My Dad Says
Would you try another book from Justin Halpern and/or Sean Schemmel?
I'd still give Justin another shot just because I loved Sh*t my dad says so much
Would you listen to another book narrated by Sean Schemmel?
I might not. It was a little monotonous
Do you think I Suck at Girls needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No. It tied itself up nicely.
Funny but nowhere like the the first book.
    Any additional comments?
Wanted more of his dad in the book. If was funny, but not want I was expecting.
    Ugh
The voices were so annoying. I felt like I was watching South Park...not in a good way.
    Sooo funny
I loved this book!!!! It could have been my Father he was talking about. My father was cut and dried, to the point, cussed constantly even when we 4 were tots. I've grown to be the same way. The narrator was perfect!!!

    Publisher's Summary:
In his best-selling YA memoir Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines, Nic Sheff shared a heartbreakingly honest account of his days as a teenage crystal meth and heroin addict. At the end of Tweak, listeners left Nic checking in to a rehab facility in Arizona. We All Fall Down is about what happened next...
In this powerful and immensely engaging follow-up to his first memoir, Sheff picks up where he left off and reveals his first-person account of stints at in-patient rehabilitation facilities, devastating relapses with alcohol and marijuana, and hard-won realizations about what it means to be a young adult living with addiction.
In We All Fall Down, Nic voices a truth that many addicts understand: not every treatment works for every addict. By candidly revealing his own failures and small personal triumphs, he inspires young people to maintain hope and to remember that they are not alone in their battles.

    Good, intriguing read
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I really liked this book, which sounds odd to say given that it's a tough, true story about a life of drug addiction. But years ago I stumbled across Nic's dad's book called Beautiful Boy which had me transfixed. Nic's first book Tweaked was my next pursuit and that was it... I was completely invested in The Sheff Family.
We All Fall Down is a sort-of predictable accounting of where Nic's life picks up after his last book. Despite the predictability of it though, I finished it still wanting (to know) more about the family and how things are going. I would recommend it and would definitely read another book by either Nic or his dad should one come available.
What other book might you compare We All Fall Down to and why?
In the same vein as Go Ask Alice but not as gritty.
    Thanks again Nic!
I love this book, I love Nic! I just want to hug him, have coffee with him and tell him my story and how much better it gets!!! Especially when you get into your 50's. I know that sounds like a long way off for young adults, but as my beautiful mom used to say "The days go slow and the years go fast"! Before you know it your holding your grandbaby in your arms and can't believe you ever wanted to die!!!! Yet again I am filled with emotion!!! Oh and I love the music you listen too...also love mom and dad!!!
Great follow up to first book
Nic Sheff knows how to write a compelling story. I recently became interested in the subject of addition. I was drawn into this story and will be looking for the third installment of how he's done in years of sobriety.... or not?
    Good follow up
This was a good follow up to Tweak but honestly after a while it becomes the same thing over and over. Personally the reader's voice isn't how I imagined the author. But overall still an interesting read and good for anyone dealing with addiction
    Hardcore
This book was not a very good performance. On top of that the subject matter was not what I expected.I have read books about addiction and recovery. This book was far to elicit and graphic for my liking . There was content that could have been left out completely and this book would have worked. I read Tweeked and it was good I felt this was a week a tempt of describing the rest of the journey.
