    Title: The Perfect Kill
    Subtitle: 21 Laws for Assassins
    Author: Robert B. Baer
    Narrator: Keith Szarabajka
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 2 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-28-14
    Publisher: Penguin Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 310 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
What is the definition of assassination? Robert B. Baer's boss at the CIA once told him, "It's a bullet with a man's name on it." Sometimes assassination is the senseless act of a psychotic, a bloodletting without social value. Other times, it can be the sanest and most humane way to change the course of conflict - one bullet, one death, case closed. Assassination has been dramatized by literature and politicized by infamous murders throughout history, and for Robert Baer, one of the most accomplished agents to ever work for the CIA, it's a source of endless fascination, speculation, and intrigue.
Over several decades, Baer served as an operative, from Iraq to New Delhi and beyond; notably, his career was the model for the acclaimed movie Syriana. In The Perfect Kill, he takes us on a serpentine adventure through the history of political murder; its connections to, and differences from, the ubiquitous use of drones in state-sponsored killing; his firsthand experience with political executions; and his decades-long cat-and-mouse hunt, across the Middle East and Europe, for the most effective and deadliest assassin of the modern age. A true maverick with an undeniably captivating personal story, Baer pulls back the curtain on the underbelly of world politics and the quiet murderers who operate on the fringe of our society.

Kill the King, Don't Slap Him
The Perfect Kill is not so much a book about assassination's "rules"as it is a book about Lebanon, Baer, and the career of one particular assassin who was active in Lebanon In the 1980s, and for two decades thereafter, until his eventually slaying (presumably by Israeli intelligence) in 2008. That man - Hajj Radwan - was was something like the "White Whale" of Baer's CIA career and post-career. This is quite understandable, as Radwan was not only a prolific political killer, but a "ghost," who for much of his career evaded so much as single photograph. His roles in the 1983 embassy bombing, barracks bombing, and scores of other attacks, are laid bare in this book (to a greater degree than in Baer's previous book), and Baer even draws a line between him and the bombing of Pan Am flight 103. Hearing Baer speculate about the cause and effect relationships of seemingly disparate events is truly fascinating stuff. He is a brilliant spook and this is his beat.
I've been admirer of Bob Baer's since reading his first book in 2002, "See No Evil," a memoir organized around his experience as a CIA officer in Lebanon in the 1980s. One of the highlights of that first book was Baer's (infectious) fixation with the mystery of the 1983 bombing of the U.S. embassy in Beirut, and I enjoyed "The Perfect Kill" for many of the same reasons. If you like Baer, or share he fascination with the unknowable and contradictory subterranean politics of the Middle East generally, and Lebanon particularly, you'll probably love this book. If not, you will still probably enjoy much it, but its trajectory may seem weird. For Baer, this book is deeply personal.
A few additional notes: The narration is absolutely outstanding. The organization is a little bit contrived but (especially in view of the redactions) not unmanageable.
Bottom line: This is not a 5-star book, but it's fun.

Subtitle: The BBC Radio 4 Full-Cast Dramatisation
    Author: Samuel Pepys, Hattie Naylor
Narrator: Kris Marshall, Katherine Jakeways, Full Cast
    Format: Original Recording
Length: 12 hrs and 17 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-18-14
    Publisher: BBC Worldwide Ltd
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 61 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Kris Marshall and Katherine Jakeways star as Mr & Mrs Pepys in this BBC Radio 4 dramatisation of the world famous diaries.
Samuel Pepys was 26 when he decided to start keeping a diary, in January 1660. For the next 10 years he faithfully recorded the day's events and confessed his innermost thoughts. That diary has since become one of our most important, and fascinating, historical documents. Pepys gave us eyewitness accounts of some of the great events of the 17th century, including the Great Fire of London and the Second Dutch War. He also told us what people ate and wore, what they did for fun, the tricks they played on each other, what they expected of marriage, and even how they conducted love affairs. He described London - the frozen river Thames, the rising crime rate and the poverty - and recorded the details of his own life: his wife, rivals, lovers and friends, his work for the Navy, his drinking and social life.
Over 350 years may have passed since Pepys first put pen to paper, but the man and his preoccupations feel surprisingly familiar. In this major BBC Radio dramatisation of the journals, the sights and sounds of his world are vividly conjured. This collection comprises all 10 radio series plus a special Saturday Drama centring on the Great Fire of London.

    Get Lost in Another Time
What did you love best about The Diary of Samuel Pepys?
I loved the acting. These are, by far, the best actors I've ever heard in a full cast performance. I also love the adaptation. The actual diary consists of 1st person journal entries. The mix of the narration of these entries and the full scenes is excellent.
What did you like best about this story?
There are so many things I liked about the story. I'd have to say, I was most moved by the personal relationships. Some of the characters were quite endearing. Humor was a huge part of the play. I found myself laughing out loud several times. I also loved the history that was so much of this story. I was transported to a long ago time and place.
    Which scene was your favorite?
It's impossible for me to pick out a single scene as my favorite. There were so many wonderful moments. I particularly enjoyed any scene with Samuel and his house boy/servant, Will. I'd have to say, these were probably the funniest exchanges.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
As I said, there were many scenes that made me laugh, and a moment that nearly brought me to tears. The acting was so good, on par with the best British films and television, I found myself caring deeply for these people.
    Any additional comments?
For anyone who particularly enjoys full cast audio performances, The Diary of Samuel Pepys is in my top five. In fact, it might even be my all-time favorite. It's hard to find fault with this production, but there is one glaring problem which caused me to deduct one overall rating star. Each of the 51 chapters is about 13 minutes long, and each one begins with a lone female voice singing a short, 20 second song. I wouldn't have minded if each time it had been a different song, but every 13 minutes I had to hear the same exact song. If that wasn't bad enough, any time there was singing by any of the characters, they too sang the same song.

    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 106 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Dan Emmett was just eight years old when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. The events surrounding the president's death shaped the course of young Emmett's life as he set a goal of becoming a U.S. Secret Service agent-one of a special group of people willing to trade their lives for that of the president, if necessary. Within Arm's Length is a revealing and compelling inside look at the Secret Service and the elite Presidential Protective Division (PPD). Using stories from some of the author's more high-profile assignments in his twenty-one years of service, Emmett describes the professional, physical, and emotional challenges faced by Secret Service agents. Included are never-before-discussed topics such as the complicated relationship between presidents, first ladies, and their agents; the inner workings of Secret Service protective operations; and the seldom-mentioned challenges of the complex Secret Service cultural issues faced by an agent's family.

    Not What I Was Expecting
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
People with a specific interest in the Secret Service.
Would you ever listen to anything by Dan Emmett again?
I would not rule it out, but doubtful.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
The slight whistle when making "S" sounds was very distracting and pronunciation of "addition", annoyed me.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Some of the stories were interesting, but this book is 95% about Dan Emmett. The description of the book made it seem like there would be more anecdotes about US Presidents.
    Excellent choice
This is an excellent choice for anyone wanting to know some history of the U.S. Secret Service and it has a great story line to accompany it.
Mr. Emmett has a very interesting history and I am glad I made the choice to purchase.
Very cool behind the scenes look
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, learned a lot about the secret service that I didn't know before.
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
The mindset that secret service men and women have to adopt/have.
    Which scene was your favorite?
One where Dan was in the oval office or Russia with some other eastern european delagate visiting and almost led to a shoot out.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    Book title is good.
    Any additional comments?
    would recommend to friends
    Obviously a dedicated patriot
    Any additional comments?
Right off the bat, the author warns that this is not a book about gossip. He's correct. I don't need gossip but it would have been nice if the stories he told included interesting antidotes, or things I may not have already known. This book describes the incredible career of a true patriot but included a lot of chest-thumping and surface info. It's as if he gave the manuscript to the feds and they edited out anything juicy, or at least a little juicy. You don't need to divulge state secrets or break your oath to make it a bit more interesting.
    good
everything about the book was really good. the narrator did an excellent job telling the story.

    Release date: 08-25-14
    Publisher: A.R.N. Publications
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 122 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Twelve Years a Slave is an account of actual events that took place in the life of Solomon Northup, during the pre-Civil War era of the 1840s. It follows the trials and tribulations of an educated African American man that was born into freedom and later kidnapped, taken away from his family, and forced into slavery.
His story brings to life a shockingly common practice that took place during those times. In his journey, Northup, who is a native of Saratoga, New York, and has a wife with three kids, gets lured into leaving his home town by two circus promoters who ask him to accompany them to Washington, D.C., while getting paid to perform at a musical gig.
This trip, which he thought would only take a few days turned in to an unimaginable voyage of deceit and great misfortune. Those few days turned into 12 long years, in which Northup was placed back into slavery in the isolated plantation country of Louisiana's Bayou Boeuf where he quickly learned that the mere mention of his past freedom would result in severe punishments or possibly his own death.
His story takes a drastic turn when a heroic friend risks his own life to help deliver the news of Northup's whereabouts to his wife, in order to help him regain his freedom. This heroic act could ultimately get Northup killed or help return him back home, to his family and freedom.

    What a great book!!!
What other book might you compare Twelve Years a Slave to and why?
Of the many audio books that I have listened to, this is definitely one of the most beautifully written autobiographies.
It gives an excellent firsthand account into the daily life and unfortunate occurrences that took place during that time in American history. Northup did a great job at putting his life events together in this book.
The story is also told very well by the narrator, making this a real pleasure to listen to. Cannot praise it any higher, it will make a wonderful addition to any library
    Incredibly Riveting and Inspiring
    Any additional comments?
This is a great book, I started listening to this on a long car ride and I couldn't stop listening. The first thing I noticed was how real the author is, this autobiography is written honestly without exaggeration. Not only is this story incredibly riveting and inspiring, but it is an important piece of history. Another high point of this audiobook is that the narrator is very easy to listen to. His smooth voice reads though the book without distracting from the story. A truly excellent narrator for this excellent book.
If you are considering giving this book a listen, I would highly recommend it.
Splendid start and a magnificent finish!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Interestingly, this stirring story embarks listeners on a bumpy ride filled with unpredictable suspense, struggles and fiery trials, its definitely a knock-out! This phenomenal book blasted off with a captivating prologue. Indeed this story depicts a free man betrayed into to slavery and it bears a unique plot which will stun unaware listeners. The conspiracy of his disappearance and redemption from slavery triggers goose bumps through my entire body. The exquisite characters were shining with glamorous descriptions and flawless execution thanks to the embodying of Stephen L. Vernon.

    Publisher's Summary:
In this unique, profoundly inspirational memoir, Divorce Court star Judge Lynn Toler shares her mother's wisdom for learning to conquer anger and become immune to insult. Toler credits her mother's "rules" for life - a life that saw her grow up the daughter of a poor teen mother and endure a husband who suffered mental illness and alcoholism - with providing the grounding for her own success and happiness. Toler shows how the mindset of "a black woman who knew how to make things work" taught her the power of knowing how to manage one's emotional business-lessons that this book offers in wrenching stories written in spare and graceful prose. My Mother's Rules is an unforgettable book that will captivate readers with its illustrations of how to rise above the most difficult circumstances and find peace and success in life.

    Loved it...just one little thing
I loved the story Judge Lynn shares in her book. After hearing so many audiobooks, I wish the production could have been less rushed. Sometimes you needed to take a breath after her wisdom before jumping right into the next thing. Again not a critique on Judge Lynn at all. I'm going to listen again and write the rules out (or just buy a copy of the book).
    Great book Judge Lynn!!
This was an amazing book!! Full of great lessons, and explanations!! I'm blessed to have found it!!
    Love the Rules
I really love this book and the common sense of it all. After reading this book I found a new Judge to watch on TV full of insight and down right street smarts. I hope she writes anther book full of rules. Good Read
    Simply amazing!
I could barely drag myself away from listening. Watching Judge Lynn on Divorce Court, I have come to respect her greatly. Her wise advice is unparalleled. One would never believe that someone who lived the life that she has growing up that she could have become so filled with wisdom beyond belief. I have even more respect for her now, as if that could be possible. Knowing her story, what a very brave and honest woman. I hated for the book to end. Judge Toler's life story is a testament to us all that no matter the difficulties in life, we cannot only make it through, we can thrive. I thank her for sharing information that could cause her and her family to be judged very harshly. Because of her courage in doing so, I am forever grateful and will hold her in the highest esteem possible now and always.

How does this 100-pound mother and stepmother of five muster the endurance and courage for the 28-hour climb from the hottest desert floor on Earth to the shadow of the continental United States' tallest point?
In The Extra Mile we watch this ultramarathon champion seek balance in her life as a wife, mother, athlete, and entrepreneur. With astonishing candor she tells of her 15-year-long battle with anorexia. And she helps us to understand her passion for ultrarunning - to discover how far the human body can be pushed.
    Members Reviews:
    Interesting, entertaining, and inspiring
The first time I heard Pam Reed's name was in 2003. The story of her being the first place winner of the Badwater 135 barely made news in even the running magazines, while I think it should have made national news. It served as an inspiration for my own endurance cycling and led me into the crazy world of 24 hour mountain bike racing.
The book fills in many of the gaps that anything less that a full time stalker would know about her racing, training and personal life. It's honest, sometimes brutally so, in her telling to personal challenges, racing life, and her reluctance as a sports personality. Her accomplishments are amazing, her path unusual and her story is fascinating. Definitely a must read for any endurance athlete who loves a good inspirational story.
    Ultrarunning without Dean Karnazes
This is similar to Dean Karno's book, but not nearly as interesting. Both books are very focused on lives of a single person, but Pam Reed's story does not have many events that are interesting to other people beyond her long-distance running.
Good story, enjoyed the female perspective
I've read many ultra marathon stories and they always inspire me in different ways.
This one was pretty good. Can't complain.
    Great story, decent narrator
What did you love best about The Extra Mile?
The frank way Pam writes. It feels a lot like I sat down to chat with her about her running and her life.
    Which scene was your favorite?
It's too hard to pick a favorite part. I just enjoyed hearing about her thinking processes and also about the other famous ultra runners she's encountered in her races. I read Scott Jurek's book before this one, for example, so it was fun to hear her mention running Badwater when he was running it for the first time.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I did laugh in some places and I got choked up when she talked about one of her sons joining her for the last 4 or 5 miles of her 300 mile run, but she is so matter-of-fact that I didn't have an extreme reaction one way or the other.
    Any additional comments?
I like this narrator a lot, but it bugs me when any narrator pronounces names incorrectly. Throughout most of this book she pronounced Dean Karnazes' name incorrectly and I'd cringe every time. There were a few times that she got it right near the end of the book, thank goodness.
Good but left me wanting more
There is no doubt that Pam Reed is an amazing athlete. Her accomplishments are unfortunately not know outside of the ultra community.

Length: 6 hrs and 48 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Penguin Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 161 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In Players First, John Calipari relates for the first time anywhere his experiences over his first four years coaching the Kentucky Wildcats, college basketball's most fabled program, from the doldrums to a national championship, drawing lessons about leadership, character, and the path to personal and collective victory. At its core, Calipari's coaching philosophy centers on keeping his focus on the players - what they need to get the best out of themselves and one another. He is beloved by his players for being utterly honest with them and making promises that he always keeps, no matter what. He knows that in this age, they come to Kentucky to prepare for the NBA; every year he gets players who in a previous era would have gone directly into the pros from high school but now have to play college basketball for one year. Calipari has fought against this system, but he has to play within it, and so he does, better than anyone.
The result is an extraordinary leadership challenge: every year Coach Cal gets a handful of eighteen-year-old kids who have been in a bubble for the previous four years at least, filled with hype about their own greatness, and they come to Kentucky feeling sure that they will play for their coach only for seven months before they go on to greater glory. Every year, he has to reinvent his team. After his 2012 NCAA championship, it was particularly dramatic; he lost his first six players in the first round, meaning that someone who couldn't even start for Kentucky was a first-round draft pick.
The overall record at Kentucky, and for his career, puts Calipari in the pantheon of the greatest coaches in the history of the game. Bold, funny, and truthful, like Coach Calipari himself, Players First is truly the first deep reckoning with the meaning of his experiences and the gifts of insight they offer.

IU alum and fan...now loves Calipari
When I heard Coach Calipari's interview on ESPN's Mike and Mike, I knew I had to read his book. There's so much more to the man than appears from a distance. I think I'm going to find myself rooting for Big Blue with him on the sidelines...until they come up against the Cream and Crimson.
I became a much bigger fan of John Calipari...
    Any additional comments?
This book covers a lot of ground about Kentucky basketball and the reasons the program, and John Calipari, is so successful. A strong reading performance and great, candid stories. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in coaching or Kentucky basketball.

This is the real-life story of Owen Suskind, the son of the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ron Suskind and his wife, Cornelia. An autistic boy who couldn't speak for years, Owen memorized dozens of Disney movies, turned them into a language to express love and loss, kinship, brotherhood. The family was forced to become animated characters, communicating with him in Disney dialogue and song; until they all emerge, together, revealing how, in darkness, we all literally need stories to survive.

    Amazing
I cannot use language strong enough to describe how amazing the insights are within this book. I was encouraged through tears and forced to look truthfully within myself and my family and face the realities of living with and raising an autistic child. If your in my situation or are any way aquatinted with an autistic person, you owe it to them and yourself to read this.
    Finding Owen
I first heard of this book when Ron Suskind spoke at a librarians' conference. Sounded so ... weird. An autistic child, Owen Suskind, learns about feelings and emotions and communication by watching Disney movies? But heck, if it works, use it, embrace it. This is a fascinating glimpse into the frustrating world of a family with an autistic child. And so intriguing to learn that Disney movies are a favorite with some in the autistic community. Do these individuals use those movies as a vehicle for understanding their world the same way that Owen does?
The author is also the narrator and does an admirable job of speaking in Disney character (I guess he had years of practice). I love that about his narration, that the voices and singing are the same that he used with his son. The heartbreak, frustration, and successes of the years of trying to help Owen find his way are touchingly described in such a way that I can't imagine anyone else voicing this story. And to think it was facilitated by Disney movies. Two thumbs up for this book.

When Jacques Lusseyran was an eight-year-old Parisian schoolboy, he was blinded in an accident. He finished his schooling determined to participate in the world around him. In 1941, when he was seventeen, that world was Nazi-occupied France. Lusseyran formed a resistance group with fifty-two boys and used his heightened senses to recruit the best. Eventually, Lusseyran was arrested and sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp in a transport of two thousand resistance fighters. He was one of only thirty from the transport to survive. His gripping story is one of the most powerful and insightful descriptions of living and thriving with blindness, or indeed any challenge, ever published.

One of the three most important books in my life
I read this book for the first time about 30 years ago and subsequently visited the town of his boyhood, Jurvardeil. So much profound wisdom. I would recommend it to anyone, but especially teenagers who are struggling to find meaning and purpose in life.
    Moving account
A powerful story well narrated. As much about the human capacity for understanding and compassion as it was a recounting of WWII. Unfortunate that it was abridged. The gaps left you wondering.
    Beautiful
This is a beautiful story of a good man and his honest testimony. It has inspired and humbled me. If you, like myself, are yearning for some small ray of heaven's light to shine through the hellish evil of the holocaust, please listen to this.
True Liberation through Admitting the Light
I was mesmerized by this true life story. it is delivered at a perfect pace in the ideal voice. It exemplifies respect for and reliance upon the great higher power as well as the amazing inner power we all possess. I am in awe of this incredible story never to be forgotten.
    Captivating Story
Such a fascinating story of his life, and especially of what he did during WWII. I would encourage everyone to read this.
