Non mariée, elle passe l'essentiel de son temps à élever ses nombreux neveux et nièces en compagnie de sa soeur. C'est pour les distraire qu'elle commence à écrire, et puis l'intérêt porté à ses récits l'encourage à se lancer dans des oeuvres plus importantes. Bien que reconnue et appréciée, Jane Austen ne connaîtra pas, de son vivant, le succès que la postérité lui apportera.

Great for Language Comprehension Practice

I like to listen to books in other languages for language practice.

This works best if it is a book that I have already listened to/read in English,

as then the material is more familiar.

For new languages, I will often try to listen to a book in parallel:

say, 15 minutes of English, then 15 minutes of the other languages, etc.

As of yet, there is a fairly limited selection of foreign language audiobooks available in the U.S. store, and an even smaller selection that are available in both English and a variety of other languages.

(And, for some reason, the Spanish ones seem often to be abridged, which makes them much less useful for this type of "rosetta stone" parallel listening practice.)

But it is slowly getting better.

Congratulations to Audible for slowly increasing its foreign language material,

and here is hoping that it will continue to do so.

And perhaps some books in Mandarin and Arabic also?

Foreign language title

The book itself is fine. Multiple copies were ordered for my senior citizens' German class, and one of the members already had a copy, so we knew what we were ordering. Hemingway's style is simple and clear, as is the translation into German. Just be aware that if you are forced to order through Amazon, you pay the full handling and postage charge per item. That is, for 10 identical and very small paperbacks - a parcel measuring 14 inches by 8 inches by 2 inches - we paid the exorbitant postage and handling charge of 129 USD for the books to be sent to Australia!!! When I brought this massive overcharge up with Amazon, the reply was very much 'take it or leave it'. I wonder if Amazon doesn't have enough competitors? Interestingly, the books actually came from The Book Depository, but when I went to TBD website (twice) to try to order it direct from them, the book didn't show up. I can only wonder about that...

Ein Nachmittag bei Boysens Lesung auf der Couch --- und mit dem Alten Mann und dem Meer ...

... mein Gefühl, nachdem ich diese Lesung wieder genossen habe: Wie wenn man sich ans Meer setzt und - wie hypnotisiert - die Brandung am Strand, oder an Klippen beobachtet ... es ist immer und immer wieder dasselbe Bild, aber immer und immer wieder dieselbe Faszination...

Will also heißen: Diese Lesung des Hemingway Klassikers finde ich immer wieder hörenswert, gleichwohl die Gefahr besteht, dass die Geschichte einen etwas runterzieht. Dazu trägt Boysens raue Stimme - zusätzlich zu der getragenen Stimmung des Werkes - wesentlich bei.

Bemerkenswert immer wieder - die Schönheit und Einfachheit und große Tragik dieser Story. Wenn einen ein Buch - in diesem Fall Hörbuch - über Jahre treu begleitet ist es umso erstaunlicher, was man darin liest, oder was man daraus für sich interpretiert. Eine vermeintlich einfache Geschichte, wie diese. Als Jugendliche habe ich nichts kapiert. Gar nichts. Zig Jahre später ist das total anders.

Bin jetzt schon gespannt, wie es irgendwann in fünf Jahren oder so wirkt. Ich liebe Hörbuch-Lesungen, wie diese hier.

A slight but compelling tale

Neville Jason does a great job with this slight but compelling tale. Turgenev lays out the story with simplicity. Sanin, a Russian visiting Frankfurt, meets and falls in love with an Italian girl whose family runs a confectioner's shop. But to marry her, he needs money. So he visits the wife of an acquaintance to make arrangements to sell his estate.

This woman, Madame Polisov, is almost shockingly modern. She and her husband have an "arrangement." He has no interest in her sexually, and the feeling is more than mutual, which leaves her with complete freedom to do as she pleases. "Freedom" appears to be one of her favorite words. She decides to seduce Sanin, apparently to feed her own vanity: she does it because she can.

Turgenev's characters are sympathetically drawn; even Madame Polisov - the most vividly alive character in the book - retains her essential humanity. It's a poignant tale, a tale of regret and loss. No Hollywood endings here. The book ends quietly, logically, and sadly.

A missed opportunity

Any additional comments?

The impression I get from this novel is that it is written by an incredibly gifted author whose talents, sadly, have left him. Yet there are flashes of brilliance here and there, and perhaps that's why Turgenev wrote the novel in the first place, perhaps he was overcome with a flash of inspiration that he eventually had to see to the bitter end, just like our 'hero'.

To read the novel in such a meta way would make this a brilliant novel, but after what I thought was a promising start, quickly becomes a bit tedious, empty of real feeling, and of not much consequence.

I think the biggest problem with the novel is that we never really know Sanin. Yes he's very good looking and this has quite the effect on the people around him (young women), and we know he's given to flights of quick passion that keeps the plot moving along, but aside from that he's sort of an empty shell. And of course that is exactly what Turgenev wanted to give us, Sanin is supposed to be a young, handsome, wealthy, and utterly shallow person. However, that does not make for the most interesting character to follow around through every page of a novel. So at the whim of everyone else around him is he that almost nothing really happens aside from total chance (his initial meeting of Gemma, the gust of wind, the meeting of Polozov; all chance).

Yet again, from a meta point of view, Turgenev must have known that this is exactly the story he wanted to tell. He wanted to take a shallow young landowner (one who owned serfs, otherwise known as slaves) and turn him into a fool and a slave.

Where does reality end and hallucination begin?

Other reviewers have mentioned the stream of consciousness style and the focus on inner psychology rather than conventional plot.

One thing I noticed: the narrator lies to most of the people around him. He also lies to himself -- sets up deceptive illusions to make himself raise the energy to do things. I've read the book only once, but I believe that some of the more fantastic scenes with are just hallucinations. Where the narrator's experience stops and the hallucinations begin is a delicate line. I'll have to read the book again and see if I can puzzle it out.

Talks about his climb through insanity and back. I loved his descriptions and attention to detail. Read three times and gave this book as a present to 4 of my friends already. They all love it and always mention it when we talk about "philosophy"

Reality or Hallucination

Easy read but hard to put down. Stream of consciousness narrative and an early example of post-modernism which shows a fine line between reality and hallucination. I enjoyed it very much and recommend it to those who like life in late 19th century in Northern Europe.

Enchanting!

I was transported back to my childhood. It was like a combination of bedtime stories - the monsters of Grimm's fairy tales, kings, queens, princesses and princes - gods like those of Olympus - monkey armies like The Wizard of Oz...all at the same time! Artfully read with various voices and inflections. It truly was enchanting!

Would you listen to The Ramayana again? Why?

Yeah, I might. It's targeted towards children, and I think it does a good job of it. The narrator did a pretty good job, it's clear he tried very hard. Sometimes, he might have tried a little too hard (faking a female voice with falsetto is generally a bad idea), but I'm happy to forgive those shortcomings. Yes, I would listen to it again.

What other book might you compare The Ramayana to and why?

I suppose it would be comparable to "Heroes, Gods and Monsters of the Greek Myths," by Bernard Evslin, in both tone and intent.

Which character as performed by Samrat Chakrabarti was your favorite?

His rendition of the male characters are pretty good.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

This is a funny question, I'm not sure why I'm being asked this.

In summary, although some aspects of it were a bit annoying, they didn't take anything away from the underlying experience. It is an important piece of our human heritage, and told well for a modern audience. I would recommend it.

Well performed, well written.

This audiobook is performed well, by a man who knows how to pronounce everything. The text is brought to life in a fun and novel way.

Better versions exist

Not bad overall. Reader changed voices between characters which get annoying after a while. There are better versions of this book out there albeit not on audio.

What did I just listen to?

I can of feel bad for saying this, since this is India's great epic and all, but this book is ridiculous. It sounds like it was co-written by a toddler and a drunk. There's very little actual conflict in the story. I mean, Ram defeats an entire demon army by himself without breaking a sweat. That's just not interesting. The character development is extremely shallow. Also, it's just silly at times. I mean, "This person shoots a flame arrow but... wait! This person shoots a water arrow to counter!" It is filled with this ridiculous images that just come out of the blue and aren't really explained. It was decent at parts, but that's about all that can be said for this book

Performance?

The narrator is so difficult to listen to that I almost returned the book. Good content, horrible reading.

Poor recording, egotistic reading

I had to switch this iff in the first two minutes after hearing how Miyamoto Mushashi's legendary book of five rings was described as "Japans answer to American strategy" And i quote exactly!!! Nevermind Mr Brown that this book was written in the 1500's when America was still "Owned" by the natives who roamed the lands. How absolutely egotistic of you, you are one of the reasons that America gets such a bad write up globally. The recording quality is poor and the intonation of the reader is boring. Sorry but this is dire, avoid at all costs.
