The Russian Dickens

"Dead Souls" is a wonderful book. It has all the wit and linguistic dexterity of Dickens, and still is utterly and completely Russian. The elusive "Russian spirit" is on every page. Truly a masterpiece, presented here in a very good translation. The reader does an excellent job, too; his voices do slip here and there, but never for more than a second or two.

There is, however, one thing to note about this audiobook: Gogol intended this to be a three-volume work. In his lifetime, he only published the first volume. He apparently wrote some of the second part, but then burned it. Now, it seems that some fragments of this second part have survived, and these are included in the audiobook. Listening to that half of the audiobook isn't really enjoyable: every time you start to follow the plot, the narrator says "at this point there is a long hiatus in the original" and jumps off to a much later part of the story, complete with new and unfamiliar characters and full of references to events you have no knowledge of. I think the audiobook would have been better without this rather pointless second part, and would recommend stopping after the first.

Bait & Switch

Firstly, this is a serviceable translation of Gogol's masterwork, and narrator Tom Weiner does a better than average job of bringing the novel to life (though somehow his imperious tone doesn't quite suit the text). But this is NOT an Unabridged reading of Dead Souls. The edited text is missing somewhere between 8-10% of Gogol's prose, mostly big chunks of descriptive exposition and digressive ruminations on the writer's life as it relates to Russian society. These excisions allow the plot to lurch forward more briskly, but Gogol has much more to offer than plot. I am deeply annoyed at the Audible editors who didn't take the time to realize this. Given all the unemployed Ph.Ds out there, the company should consider hiring experts in specific fields of literature as editors to ensure this type of false advertisement doesn't happen again. P.S. When I initially download the book two weeks ago, the thumbnail they used was of the Vintage Classics edition, translated by the great Pevear and Volokhonsky. This has since been revised, but further adds to the unreliability of the Audible marketers when it comes to disclosing to the customer exactly what they're getting.

Great audio book in German

What did you love best about Homo Faber?

I like how Homo Faber does not hold anything back when he talks about what he is thinking. Sometimes I think what he thinks is a little inappropriate, but it gives a good insight into the human condition.

I use this audio book as a companion to reading the eBook. I read as the reader reads out loud. It helps me with my German and I get to hear a great story -- read by a native speaker -- at the same time.

Klassiker perfekt gelesen

Ich kannte den rational denkenden Ingenieur Homo Faber bisher nur vom hören sagen. Jetzt kenne ich auch seine Geschichte und bin sehr froh darüber. Max Frisch erzählt aus Faber's Perspektive, wie er die ihm oft unverständliche Welt und das aus seiner Sicht irrationale Verhalten anderer Menschen sieht.

Felix von Manteuffel ist ein genialer Sprecher den ich bereits aus anderen Hörbüchern kenne und der mich immer wieder begeistert und für Homo Faber perfekt geeignet ist.

Verga's skill to weave a realistic view of daily life in a small Sicilian fishing village is remarkable. From the first introduction to the various characters, the reader is immediately drawn into their midst, giving each an identity that transcends time and space. Their world is a universal microcosm of people we have always known.

Something Completely Different

This is a wonderful novel focused on village life in a mostly pre-literate Sicily of the 1870s. Newly united Italy wants a navy, and disrupts the life of a traditional fishing family by taking its sons. It has a family resemblance with Flaubert's great MADAME BOVARY, except there's a deeper sympathy for the dilemmas of the characters, easily sensed under the tight-lipped, objective, "realistic" narration. With great originality, a good deal of the narration is carried out through the conversations of the villagers, just as if you were there listening to the villagers chatting. One could say that this is the world Joe DiMaggio escaped by becoming a baseball star, except that there's only one character who "wants to get away," and he's not easy to identify with. Instead, the narrative gets you involved in the outlooks and feelings of the others, who can only conceive of living honorable lives and having their own house in this village in the shadow of Mount Etna.

La filosofia pirandelliana trova qui il suo totale compimento attraverso il protagonista, il "pazzo" Vitangelo Moscarda, che assorbe in sé e supera tutti i personaggi presenti nelle opere precedenti dello scrittore siciliano. Moscarda, partendo dalla scoperta di avere il naso lievemente storto, si avventura in una serie di ricerche speculative ed esistenziali che lo porteranno prima alla rovina e poi alla successiva rinascita tramite l'autoesclusione dalla vita sociale e dalla visione comune degli uomini. La voce del narratore dà forma e concretezza vivente ad un monologo ricco di interrogazioni ed esclamazioni proprio come fosse un'opera teatrale ma in realtà si rivolge, al di là del palcoscenico, direttamente all'orecchio dell'ascoltatore e alla sua coscienza.

Great book, a bit philosophical

Interesting and very dense, but a bit difficult. His "Il fu Mattia Pascal" (The late Mattia Pascal") is much easier and funnier for those who are starting reading Pirandello

This book is great but the digital edition requires some serious work for indentation/editing

I love this work from Pirandello, I bought the digital edition for convenience. However, the digital edition is vy hard to read. It looks like this has been generated automatically, which is ok, however it is clear that it has been published with little consideration for quality. This is why I rate this 4 stars only.

Great book.

I bought this book in Kindle. It came immediately and I started reading. Great classic book for people who wants to know more about italian culture and who read/learn Italian.

Hands down my favorite book in a long time

I absolutely love this book. I don't know what it is about it, but there is just something to this book that pulls me in. I'm the kind of person who usually reads a lot of fantasy so this was a big change in genre for me but I'm glad I took a leap and purchased this book. I recommend it to everyone.
