    Publisher's Summary:
Gettysburg is the sixth in a 10-book series spanning the Civil War and describing its effects on one Southern family.
Stonewall Jackson was dead, but Confederate morale was never higher. Will and Mac, the two eldest Brannon sons, are in the ranks of the Stonewall Brigade and Jeb Stuart's cavalry. As Jacksons former corps marches up the Shenandoah Valley, Lee's army follows, and they eventually clash at Gettysburg. Will is kept in the thick of the combat around Culp's Hill, while Mac sees action with the Southern cavalry at Hanover. Both are swallowed up in the melee of the fighting, and neither emerges unscathed.
Bruised and bleeding, the Confederate army stumbles back into Virginia, a fourth of their number dead. As news spreads of the defeat and the huge number of casualties, the Brannon clan in Culpeper County anxiously awaits word on the fates of two sons.
    Critic Reviews:
Robust, detail rich, and well-paced.Reasoners battle narrative provides equal parts pathos and accuracy. (Publishers Weekly)
Fraught with passion, tension, and tenderness. (Booklist)

    So moving and so heroic
As I thought would be the case if you have gotten this far in the series you will care about the different members of the Brannon family and how the war is effecting them, but what I wasn't prepared for was the incredible word painting by James Reasoner of the Battle of Gettysburg - it was some of the most vivid I've heard or read. It was brilliantly portrayed and excellently narrated by Lloyd James. I was moved to tears as I heard the valiant Pickett's Charge and its aftermath.
While this series is glorifying the south's efforts in the civil war, in this book the futility of war was very apparent and given personal meaning to the Brannon's family and the listener. I can't wait to start the next book
The pain of war was felt
To read about this as seen through the soldiers eyes, the mothers eyes , the family & friends left me feeling their pain. It happened though & we should remember those who have fought in all the wars with respect & gratitude.
    Historically Correct
I like this series because they are indeed historically correct but I do wish there was more detail in the history part and less in the personal character part.

    Title: A Good School
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Richard Yates
    Narrator: Kristoffer Tabori
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 25 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-09-10
    Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 30 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Richard Yates, who died in 1992, is today ranked by many readers, scholars, and critics alongside such titans of modern American ficiton as Updike, Roth, Irving, Vonnegut, and Mailer.
In this work, he offers a spare and autumnal novel about a New England prep school. At once a meditation on the twilight of youth and an examination of America's entry into World War II, A Good School tells the stories of William Grove, the quiet boy who becomes an editor of the school newspaper; Jack Draper, a crippled chemistry teacher; and Edith Stone, the schoolmaster's young daughter, who falls in love with most celebrated boy in the class of 1943.

Three kinds of success by Audible
Since discovering "Revolutionary Road" on audio, and then the inimitable recording of "Easter Parade" last year, I have been holding my breath for more Yates on audio. Now "A Good School" has been released, and it is true to form.
Not only is this Yates' funniest book, but it is also one of his most poignant. With the polyphony of voices brought so wonderfully to life in this recording by Kristoffer Tabori - who is clearly having a blast - it is all but impossible to stop listening. I personally hold Richard Yates to be one the greatest voices to come out of America in the second half of the 20th century. To sum it all up, if you like American fiction, and you want something that is highly entertaining as well as meaningful, then you simply can't go wrong with "A Good School".
There are no words to express my gratitude and appreciation for the fact that some of Yates' work is now being produced this way: with great performances, in excellent sound quality, for a nice price. I really hope that the powers that be decide to go forward with "Young Hearts Crying" - with Tabori on board once more, that would make a fourth kind of success.

Like listening to someone read their diary
I enjoyed the characters and the setting, but the story line was dull, kind of like reading someone's diary.
I enjoyed the narrator, and found it amusing that I had last listened to her read a novel that took place in the wild west...it took a bit of an adjustment to place her in China and California WWII times.

    Soooooooo predictable...
I love books with a good story line, but this one is very predictable and I had serious problems staying awake.
    horrible narrator
so-so story with an awful narrator. terrible accents and monotone narration. don't get it.
    Tedious
I found this book predictable and not particularly enjoyable. The characters lacked dimension and plot development was weak. To make matters worse the narration was amateur to the point of being painful at times. I managed to listen to the end in hopes it would get better. Unfortunately it didn't.

    Wonderful book.
I loved Book 2 in the Singing River Series. I like it when the books in a series follow the same people. All the characters are wonderful and the narrator brings everyone of them to life with her voice. She has a different voice for each character and it is so good. Can't wait to start Book #3. Gilbert Morris is a great author.

    Thoroughly enjoyable
I you are worried this book may not be accessible to the average western reader don't be, not even the most rudimentary knowledge of Japanese history is necessary (although history buffs will probably get more out of it).
It really is a good detective story for the modern reader despite its setting. Although the treatment of women was often depressing the strong female characters made up for this is some way (although I doubt it is historically accurate that women could move around as freely as this book would suggest, but who cares?). The political intrigue adds another interesting dimension to the story in keeping with previous books of the series.
This is the 14th book of the Sano Ichiro Series and despite not reading any of the previous books I still enjoyed it immensely.

Here, in her own riveting account, is the enchanting woman whose name still evokes excitement and compassion - and whose death under the headsman's axe still draws forth our sorrow.
In The Memoirs of Mary Queen of Scots, Carolly Erickson provides another in her series of mesmerizing historical entertainments, and takes listeners deep into the life and heart of the 16th century's most fascinating woman.
    Critic Reviews:
"As one of the foremost fictionalized biographers writing today, Erickson breathes life into history and brings great women to life. She brilliantly takes Mary, Queen of Scots, out of the historical record and creates a passionate woman readers will understand and adore.... Erickson's engrossing narrative allows Mary to speak and readers to decide what kind of woman she was." (Romantic Times)
    Members Reviews:
    Fiction being the key word
I downloaded this book both because I had enjoyed Ms. Erickson's prior novel about Katherine Parr and because I read or listen to most books (fiction and non) about Mary Stuart and Elizabeth Tudor. Unfortunately, I also wrote my senior thesis in college on the interplay between Elizabeth and Mary so my own knowledge of history is strong in this era.
I say unfortunately because, as well-narrated as this book was, and knowing that it was a fictional treatment of Queen Mary's life, the grotesque historical inaccuracies ruined the listening for me. At the very end, the narrator reads an "Afterword" that acknowledges the lack of authenticity. No, Mary and Elizabeth did not meet in the baths (in fact, they never met at all, but most fictional writers feel the need to have them meet). Lord Bothwell died in a Danish prison. The whole story is a compilation of "what ifs." If that acknowledgment had been a preface rather than an afterword, I might have been able to better enjoy the story as pure fiction, using the names of historical figures.
Mary and Elizabeth never met. Lord Bothwell did not visit Mary during her long imprisonment in England after Mary's abdication of the Scottish throne. Mary certainly did NOT escape England, go to Italy and roam around Flanders and France and then return to England. The entire story is made up out of whole cloth and is a poor introduction to the wonderful world of the Tudors and the Stuarts who are fascinating figures.
The real people who are characterized in this book are interesting enough without the number of dramatizations that are in this story. Novelizing Elizabeth and Mary is fine and so many good novels have been written of their lives. This just isn't one of them.
    English & Scottish History
The book is mostly written from Mary's point of view. It shows the both the sides of privilege and the inborn beliefs in responsibilities. I found it an extremely interesting listen, well written and well narrated.
