    Ugh!
Sadly, I am the kind of reader that no matter how bad the book I have to finish it. I struggled to finish this book. I had not read the first book about this Empress but I never will now.
The story was boring at best. The author wrote in a way that I could not tell if she was referring to her perceptions or reality. This woman sounded like she was continually unhappy and a martyr. I did not see her as a strong leader or someone to be a role model.
The narration was awful. Accents were excellent but the monotone presentation was the biggest reason for my struggle to finish this book. The emotionless delivery was also part of why the empress sounded more like a martyred wimp!!
    Don't bother with this book.
    The last empress
Our book group chose the two books by this author and audible was the only place I found them in an auditory format.
Long stories both but very interesting Chinese history
It will be an interesting discussion for us
    Inspirational and eye-opening!
All americans should read this book to open their eyes to new perspectives on foreign policy. Orchid's touching story is one of courage, strength, daring, intelligence and deep love.
    Great sequel to Empress Orchid
This audio book picked up Cixi's story where Empress Orchid left off. It covered her life after the death and funeral of her Emperor husband's death until her death. After reading non-fiction accounts of Cixi's life this book seems to follow the accomplishments of her life and the steps she took as a leader to modernize China.
Although it is a work of fiction, and no one can really know the details of her relationships, she was the ruler of China as regent for two child Emperor's and therefore wielded great power. The paradox she had to deal with was that the Chinese saw themselves as a superior and advanced civilization and so did the Western countries. The clash of cultures was enormous as Eastern and Western cultures tried to find some common ground to begin their negotiations.
As the product of Western civilization and the conveniences of what began with the Industrial Revolution it is difficult to imagine a people who would not welcome these wonders. But the Chinese had a different world view full of different priorities and values.
One must listen with an open mind and learn about this totally foreign world.

    Not just for girlies
Ignore the blurby bit. This book is not just for women. It is a great book for anybody who is interested in human history and uses a fragment of a biblical story as an interesting pivot for a real human story told fearlessly and compassionately. Moments where it pays not to be squeamish but nothing gruesome or sensational. The writing is crisp and clear and moves at a fair pace. The narration is as clear as any I have heard and does the work justice. Get it and enjoy however your chromosomes are paired up.
    Excellent
I have previously read this book but when I saw it available on Audible, I thought that I would download it. Listening to it, I thoroughly enjoyed it and was able to visualise the characters better than when I read it.
    such an evocative book
I have read this book and listened to it several times. For me, it brings to life how women's lives were shaped by men for so long. although the women were strong and supported each other, ultimately they had very little choice in making decisions about their lives. Life was hard and the men could be brutal.
The story is about Dinah, the sister of Joseph-from the old testament. Although set in biblical times, it is not about religion. It covers one woman's life from birth to death, her childhood with all of the wives acting as her mother, her training to be a midwife, falling in love and having a son - all against the biblical background of familiar stories.
For today's independent active women, a life where you lived apart from the men when you were menstruating or in childbirth -in the red tent being waited upon by young girls - is so alien. But despite the sadness of death and loss, this is a joyous account of a woman overcoming the hardships to find peace of mind and her place in the world.
    beautiful story
    I finished this in days,
A beautiful story, i found it insightful and touching and described in a way that certainly sparked my imagination.
    A let down
Nowhere near as spiritual, profound or enlightening as I was led to believe. Main character has little depth and there were few life lessons to take away. Also few lessons on the history of womanhood.

    The Wallace
Nothing but battle descriptions. I'm sorry I bought it. I wish audible had a way to return books that don't turn out to be sufficiently captivating to hold ones' interest.
    The Wallace: Scotland's Greatest Hero
The Wallace: Scotland's Greatest Hero by Nigel Tranter is very finest story. This is a story based on the life of William Wallace the hero of Scotland. This is finest story of Scotland's most honored son, a patriot unrivaled. At the end of the 13th century Scotland was suffering under the tyranny of the English and Edward Plantagenet. The eponymous hero swears to rid his land of their cruelty and to restore Robert the Bruce to the throne. Nigel Tranter has written many historical novels, mostly set in Scotland. It is a good read and even better if you happen to be Scottish. The tutored and encouraged by the heroic William Wallace, he determined to continue the fight for an independent Scotland, sustained by a passionate love for his land. This two-hour and fifty four minutes abridged audio version of also includes author commentary and an original narrated by Michael Elder. It creates imagination about the story through his bold voice that explains, capturing the essence of a story told by a writer who remains tender to the tragedy it contains. The 'William Wallace' this is outstanding story of hero of Scottish Independence.
EXCELLENT! I can actually imagine being there!
it was my first Nigel tranter book and it certainly didn't disappoint in my opinion they never do, personally my favourite author now!
    I wish it wasn't abridged.
    Any additional comments?
Anyone who saw the film 'Braveheart' might like to read or listen to this book and find out what the story really was. Like hundreds, probably thousands, of children growing up in Scots ex-pat families I was taught much of our history through Nigel Tranter and had devoured his books by my mid- teens.
My parents met Mr Tranter several times and so I know of the lengths he went to get historical details as accurate as possible, given the passage of years. For me his history and storytelling was compelling, but his weaker area was the imagined personal relationships as between husband and wife.
Overall the books were wonderful and I learnt so much. I've bought this in the sale and it's good value, well narrated. You get a brief intro by the man himself as well. The overall score of 3 is because it has been abridged. The Bruce trilogy is abridged too, such a shame.
The only 2 reviews already here are poles apart, one very positive and the other calling it a dirge. I can't agree with the latter. I think we should be very proud of our history and our heroes, but history is made by human beings with flaws, like Wallace and Bruce, not by Hollywood inventions.

Title: Dream When You're Feeling Blue
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Elizabeth Berg
    Narrator: Elizabeth Berg
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 59 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-04-07
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 70 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
As the novel opens, Kitty and Louise Heaney say good-bye to their boyfriends Julian and Michael, who are going to fight overseas. On the domestic front, meat is rationed, children participate in metal drives, and Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller play songs that offer hope and lift spirits. And now the Heaney sisters sit at their kitchen table every evening to write letters: Louise to her fiancé, Kitty to the man she wishes fervently would propose, and Tish to an ever-changing group of men she meets at USO dances.
In the letters the sisters send and receive are intimate glimpses of life both on the battlefront and at home. For Kitty, a confident, headstrong young woman, the departure of her boyfriend and the lessons she learns about love, resilience, and war will bring a surprise and a secret, and will lead her to a radical action for those she loves.
The lifelong consequences of the choices the Heaney sisters make are at the heart of this superb novel about the power of love and the enduring strength of family.

"[A] sentimental celebration of a bygone era." (Publishers Weekly)

    Couldn't Stop Listening
This book immediately brought me into the Heaney family's world which felt like a pretty good place to be. I remember my parents talking about W.W.II when my Dad was a pilot in the Pacific, and so many of the descriptions reminded me of things they had talked about. This book made me laugh and it made me cry, but most of all, it made me long for a time when the world was a much simpler place. I loved this book!
    Not too satisfying
I'm a fan of Elizabeth Berg, and even attended a book-signing for this novel. While I love her other books, this one was not as satisfying. I was distracted by the constant over-use of brandnames, imagery, catch phrases, etc. meant to conjure up nostalgic memories, no doubt, in a more "mature" reader. I guess this book has its audience, but I'm more moved by her other works that deal with women her (and my) age.
My first listen...liked for the most part.
Elisabeth Berg is one of my favorite authors. I hold a highlighter pen while reading her books just to remember sentences here and there. She puts things into words so beautifully. Some of what she writes I just never want to forget...
I loved this book but I am sorry to say I didn't like the narration. It was almost too syrupy sweet at times and I almost wanted to stop listening now and then. I'm glad I finished the book though, as I enjoy hearing about this time in history just knowing what my parents must have felt during those days during World War II. My father was in the Navy and my mother attended many a USO dance.
I could have done without the Irish accents though...and I'm Irish!
Please write more books Ms. Berg but I have to say I'll read your next novel and not listen to it.
Wonderful, not sure about the narration
As an Elizabeth Berg fan, I looked forward to hearing this book. Always before I have read them. Her self narration sometimes seemed emotionally flat, with a strange, constant slow cadence. Toward the end the emotion started to feel more appropriate. All in all, I loved the book and the story was wonderful. It was relevant to me because I'm a post WW2 baby, and heard many stories similar to the ones in the book when I was growing up.

    Title: Saint Patrick's Battalion
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: James Alexander Thom
    Narrator: William Dufris
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 34 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-19-06
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 21 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
It is June 1845, and Paddy Quinn is a camp boy for the American army which, by order of President Polk, is bound for Mexico. A young man with journalistic aspirations, Paddy writes letters for illiterate soldiers and learns that, like him, many are Irish, including the enigmatic John Riley. Riley rattles camp hierarchy when he rails against the brutal treatment of Irish soldiers, but he soon goes further, sneaking away at night to switch sides. Riley is not alone. Fed up with mistreatment and drawn by a Catholic bond, Irish, German, and other soldiers join Mexico. Led by Riley, a corps of Irishman called the San Patricios in English, St. Patrick's Battalion fights for the enemy in the war's major campaigns. But when they are captured, their resolve is tested in the extreme, as are Paddy's loyalties to his country and to the man he most admires.
Alternating between Paddy's account and that of Augustin Juvero, a Mexican soldier, nationally best-selling author James Alexander Thom constructs an enlightening novel about war, duty, and loyalty, and draws intriguing parallels to our current conflict in Iraq. This is his most powerful and relevant novel since Follow the River.
    Editorial Reviews:
James Alexander Thom's Saint Patrick's Battalion is a stirring and evocative work of historical fiction, based on a true story, and vividly reimagining the circumstances under which a band of Irish and German Catholic men defected from the American forces during the Mexican-American war to fight instead for the opposing side. This exquisitely rendered novel tells a sweeping tale of tragedy, loyalty, love, and war.
The relative youth of main characters Paddy Quinn and Augustin Juvero is skillfully emphasized by voice actor William Dufris, whose expressive performance draws out very neatly their uncertainty in this period of complicated allegiances.
    Critic Reviews:
"With its eerie parallels to modern-day warfare, this fine novel makes for gripping listening." (Booklist)
"Not only a striking (and often horrific) account of pre-Civil War army life, Quinn's narrative beautifully conveys the boy's coming of age against a backdrop of eerily familiar war and rebellion." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Good story badly told
When I saw the title, I was excited to hear something about the St. Patrick Battalion that went over to Mexico. Yet, the story is so crudely told (lots of unnecessary details about sex and sex abuse that could easily be indicated in a more mature manner) that I gave up in the first chapter.
Explosive Revelations! Real war from every angle.
    Any additional comments?
If you only ever read one story of war, it should be this well and uniquely crafted piece of historic fiction. This is the story of a war that the victors would prefer to forget or, failing that, to remember differently. It is written by a soldier-historian from the point of view of both sides. In short, war is hell but one sides devil can be other guys saint. If, after reading this, you do not immediately check Google to determine if any or all of the events or players are accurately portrayed, it can only mean you do not have access to the internet.

    Title: Abundance
Subtitle: A Novel of Marie Antoinette
    Author: Sena Jeter Naslund
    Narrator: Susanna Burney
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 56 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-28-06
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 88 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Though fictionalized, Abundance is based on Sena Jeter Naslund's impeccable research. It reveals Marie Antoinette as an entirely different person from the one who supposedly said of the starving French peasants, "Let them eat cake"; in fact, she rebelled against the extravagances of the court. But as an outsider, she was the target of an uprising that finally decided her fate. Naslund, who brought to life a compelling fictional woman in Ahab's Wife, now draws a gripping portrait of an historical figure we thought we knew. And in doing so, she has created one of her most memorable and moving characters.
    Critic Reviews:
"With vivid detail and exquisite narrative technique, Naslund exemplifies the best of historical fiction, finding the woman beneath the pose, a queen facing history as it rises up against her. "(Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Not for history fans
If you love history, you're better off going elsewhere for a look at Marie Antoinette. This is a shallow look at the person and especially the period. It doesn't connect with events outside the palace and show what leads to Antoinette's, and the book's, end. For history fans, an opportunity missed.
    Awesome. Better than I expected.
I enjoyed listening to this book more than any novel in my library. It was extremely close to the real life history of Marie Antoinette and the Versailles Court. I learned quite a bit about this period in history just from this novel.
    Don't Let Them Eat Cake
This is my second time listening to this book. I enjoyed each time. Fabulous fiction.
    Very vivid!
The detailing made it very easy to picture and even though I knew how it ends I was still sad.
    LOVE!
I can't wait to listen to more! Love this author and the woman who read it! Smooth voice and is how I imagine Marie's voice to be.

    Not bad, not great
This is a rare case where the book is not better than the film. If you enjoyed the film (which I did), you might still like the book, but be warned that the book is quite different in a couple of major ways. It's a very slow moving story (in the book), and it doesn't help in this case that the narrator reads it at a slow, deliberate pace. It's a matter of taste, I know, but I did not care for the narrator of this title. Some of the voices he affected for a few characters were downright annoying. Fortunately, he does not adopt such voices for any of the primary characters. Not a waste of time, but not as good as I had hoped, based on the movie.
    Inspiring American Western
What made the experience of listening to Open Range the most enjoyable?
    The story itself.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Sue Barlow, she is an inspiration to the Open Rangers. She is beautiful and dedicated to doing good.
What does Barrett Whitener bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He has a lot a emotion in his voice.
If you could take any character from Open Range out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Sue Barlow, she is an interesting person.
    Any additional comments?
A must listen for Cowboy or Western book lovers.

Three generations of Roths live together in a crowded tenement flat. Long-widowed Manya is the family's head and its heart. She's renowned throughout the neighborhood for her cooking, and every noontime the front room of the flat turns into Manya's private restaurant. But Manya is no soft touch, except, perhaps, where her granddaughter Elka is concerned. Precocious Elka is her closest companion and confidante. Through Elka's eyes we come to know the fascinating characters who move in and out of the Roths' lives. Money may have been short, but opinions were not, and their tart tongues and lively humor abound. In this riveting story lies the heart of the American immigrant experience: a novel at once wise, funny, poignant, anguishing, exultant, and bursting with love.

Tenement Life From a Child's Point of View
As the author states in the afterward of the book-this book is part biography, part fiction and all true. It tells a sweeping story of living in poverty in the tenements of NYC through the eyes of young Elka. The book reminded me of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn at first. However, I can understand why it isn't on a youth reading list anywhere. This story is peppered with frank talk about sex, infidelity and off-color jokes. Much of this was unnecessary for the story. It is a shame that this content makes it inappropriate for young people because it is an engaging tale filled with growth, insight and change.
I agree with another reviewer that I would have liked a better time line. I found myself wondering what year it was when the action took place and hoping for an easier tracking of time progression. Instead there were vague mentions of "the war". Having firmer grounding in time would have made the story fit more easily into the world going on around it.
Lorna Raver, the narrator, did a great job. I really enjoyed her enthusiasm. It was a long book but the listening time flew by and my attention was held effortlessly. Parts of the book are difficult listening, as the poverty, chronic illness, filth and constant struggle are harsh realities. That said, it is a good story and I'm glad I listened.
    My Life
Could not believe it, I still smell the sour pickles, nuts and dried fruits. The urine in the stairwells,my mother would hit the steps to scare the rats & the drunkes.I remeber my mother shoveling coal in some tenaments. Then we would get slippers in the lower eastside for 5 cents put them on the pushcart and sell for 20cents if we could get it. Classified as non-fiction for me. I remeber mom!To Life!
    Another Favorite
The list just gets longer and longer of favorite books I have listened to. This one has definitely found a spot on that list.
Set in NYC with a Jewish immigrant family prior to, through, and after the Depression. We learn about three generations of a wonderful family as they triumph together. The vignettes are amusing, sad, real, and loving.
I do love ethnic tales because we can always find something in our own background to identify with, regardless of the culture.

    Thin Story
I didn't know this was abridged until I got to the end and it was announced; somehow I missed that in the book description -- still can't find it stated anywhere. This book didn't quite hold my interest throughout. It's sort of precious and bland and I kept on with it but often wished I hadn't started.
    Why is this abridged?
The book is one of my favourite and I was so disappointed when I realised that the audiobook is not the full novel - why?
    Ehh...
Wonderful narration and beautiful writing. However, little plot what so ever in my opinion. Slow moving book.
    This is what love is...
A journey that even death may not block. Love is a beautiful tragedy drowning one in loss and hope.
This was an equisite and beautiful book to read...
....Rebecca Gayheart portrayed the characters in such a way that I believed I was actually listening to Razi speak....that she was a real person. The romance in this book was perfect........there was just a touch of sex with much passion and love and tenderness that caused me to feel anticipation for the next time the lovers in the book would meet. It was a ghost story but in a fashion that was not scary but more that it needed to be told this way...with Razi being our guide thru both Andrew's and Amy's lives....There is a lot of sadness and anger from broken hearts that needs to be dealt with and the reader is drawn in to the point of almost feeling their heart breaking too. I found myself being pulled into the story each time I would start it up again and it was REALLY difficult for me to stop........I'm sure I would've finished this book in an afternoon if I would have had the opportunity. I loved how this book made me feel and think and wonder.......and how I could just sit and ponder on the beauty of a love that transends all time and worlds......It was a really amazing experience or me to read this book and one that I will fondly think about during the remainder of my reading years and beyond.
