AS EXPECTED.

Great Story, but Blank CD!

I really wanted to review positively because I loved this book as a child. However, the disc that I ordered for my nephew was blank.

I tried several players and they all gave the same result. Blank disc, no story!

Needless to say I am very disappointed!

Sadly I didn't find out until recently (Three year olds don't understand return windows and how they expire!) so I cannot return the defective disc.

So please don't buy this cd since it seems to be a rip-off, but definitely do order the book if you can find it in paper form! It's a wonderful story and lots of fun!

A Collectors Item

In this book we're taken to a dinosaur filled park with a 7 year old boy name Timothy McDunn. This book is a short, but rich, adventure. The story is interesting and full of lots of dinosaur information that is perfect for young dinosaur lovers.

The book keeps the mood light and not too scary for kids.

Being a dinosaur enthusiast, and only 7 years old, when I read this book in 1988 I instantly fell in love with it. I still have the book and I still find it rather interesting to compare to it's predecessor, Jurassic Park, though obviously too different types of stories.

If you plan on buying this book, I highly recommend that you locate the fold-out map and the audio-tape that go along with it to maximize the enjoyment. The audio reading is excellent and a must have. The cast of voices and sound effects are done very well and gives a real feel of the atmosphere and mystery of being lost in a dinosaur park.

Being out of print for a long time and extremely hard to find, I believe this set to be a collectors item.

Great Story for young dino lovers!

I had this book and audio cassette when I was a kid -- I was in 2nd grade and COMPLETELY addicted to dinosaurs! The story was so exciting, and there was great music and sound effects on the recording. I loved it!

I had read about E. Nesbit forever and finally am reading a couple of her children's "magic" books. She was the model for Edward Eager's magic books, and I understand why he admired her. (My granddaughter and I loved all of Eager's books.) The children in The Phoenix are very real, each with "its" own personality. (Nesbit solves the he/she problem by simply referring to each child with "it" -- funny, but sensible. She clearly intends no insult.) They are very real-world children who happen to encounter magic -- the psammead in The Five Children and It, and the phoenix in this book. Although as Cyril points out, they are probably the kind of children likely to encounter magic. Even the phoenix has its own distinct personality -- rather proud of itself. It is, after all, thousands of years old and is the only one of its kind.

The carpet (owned by the phoenix), which finds its way into the nursery, is magic. But as the children had discovered with the psammead, getting what one wishes for is not all it is cracked up to be. So the children find themselves in one not entirely desirable adventure after another.

The book is British, of course, since Nesbit is, and it was written over 100 years ago, so some of the settings and language may seem a little quaint. I found this rather delightful. These children who play in a "nursery" and have their "tea" are very much like the children today who may be reading this book.

I have given both The Five Children and It and The Phoenix and the Carpet to my granddaughter, largely because she enjoyed such books as Half Magic. When I send her books, I enclose a letter about them, and in this letter I reminded her that as Half Magic opened, the four children are walking home from the library, where they have just checked out yet another book by their favorite author, E. Nesbit. And since they can't wait to begin reading it, Jane starts reading to the others on their 2-mile walk home. They are forced to go to bed, but except for that, they do not stop their reading until the book is finished. In that narrative, Eager is I think reflecting his own love for Nesbit's writing. What was different about her treatment of magic is, it wasn't about fairyland, with dragons and ogres. It was about real children in the real world who encounter magic.

One of my all time favorites as a child!

A great quaint and enchanting story narrated brilliantly.

A little girl goes from riches to rags and back again. The book is a lovely story of a little girl Sarah crew's journey through misfortune and out the other side again with a sprinkle of childlike stardust.

Beautiful story, not sobeautiful narration

A Little Princess is one of my favourite children's stories. However, quite frankly,

Vanessa Maroney was a rather irritating narrator. Her "children's voice" was grating!

Favorite book from childhood/Excellent narration.

I highly recommend this book to anyone, but especially children of between eight and 12 years old. I am currently sharing this with my 9 yr old granddaughter and we're enjoying it together and finding it bringing back many fond memories. This book is one that you can become completely lost in. Be prepared to experience a myriad of emotions, as any well written book does.

I listened to several audio samples & read reviews before selecting this book. I am very impressed with the excellent narration.

Enjoy this amazing book, hopefully with a loved one.

Look elsewhere

I received a pdf version of this book for free on LibraryThing in exchange for an honest review.

I had just read another book by this same author. As I had just given the other book a one star review, I was not expecting a whole lot for this book. While this book was better in some ways, I was still disappointed by the quality of a book that is aimed at teaching small children about zoo animals. In addition to a misspelled word in the âAbout the Authorâ section, there are a lot of little things that detract from the book.

There are some pages that continue the topic of the previous page, but they just have text, no pictures. This makes the format a little more boring.

There are a couple of pictures in the PDF where the pictures do not display properly. Portions of the animals have blocks of color over areas instead of the proper shape of the animal.

I especially have a problem with the information about snakes. Snakes are not poisonous, they are venomous. While this is common misinformation, a book that is supposed to teach children real facts about animals should at least be sure that all the facts are correct. Also, the way in which snakes are talked about can lead to unhealthy fear about snakes, even harmless ones. It is mentioned that there are harmless and helpful snakes, but does not say anything about how they are helpful. The information focuses on the features of dangerous snakes. There is mention of snakes that can be deadly, but there is no mention that there is anti-venom that is available for many of such snakes, especially for the dangerous snakes that are wild in the U.S. This is the type of presentation that reinforced my unhealthy fear of all snakes since I was a child. Had I been taught the difference between âgoodâ and âbadâ snakes and how the âgoodâ snakes can be helpful and harmless, it would have helped me to react to snakes better as a child, as well as an adult.

There is specific information that is shared about the animals that may be interesting to older readers but seems a little complex for the ages that the rest of the writing seems to be targeting. It leaves confusion about what target ages this book is really for.

There is a section at the end titled âQuiz Answersâ, which seems an awkward title as there is no separate âQuizâ section, just a list of all the questions and answers. The questions and answers to some of the questions refer to some of the complex information just mentioned. Again, this introduces confusion about the target ages.

While wanting to teach children information about different zoo animals is wonderful, there are too many detractors in this book that can take away from that goal. I recommend looking elsewhere on information about zoo animals.

not a normal picture book this one actually teaches

This book does have pictures or graphics of animals, funny pictures. It also has plenty of information for the learning minds.

Beautiful Story of Santa Claus. Timeless.

What a neat story that explains the origins of Santa Claus and how he started making toys and became immortal. Then moves on to how parents help get the toys he makes to the kids he so loves. I've never read L. Frank Baum, and not really into reading children's literature these days, but I enjoyed this so much I'm going to purchase a hard cover, illustrated copy for my great nephews and great niece to read every Christmas. Now I want to read the Wizard of Oz series.

The Complete Story of Santa Claus

This is a great Christmas story for young and old alike. It gives the history of Santa Claus from the time of birth to old age. The book also gets into how the legend developed over the course of Santa's life. There are many interesting aspects of how the Santa grew up, developed making toys and how he arrived at his delivery system for Christmas Eve. It is a fun and interesting story. I truly enjoyed the book.

Wonderful Holiday Read-Aloud

This was a very imaginative story and quite enjoyable for my kids. The illustrations are wonderful and I actually stopped and studied each one to take in all the details. Very entertaining read if you like the L. Frank Baum style - which I do. This is a great book to read to your children!!

Not enough of a Christmas atmosphere...

This book interested me because it was written by L. Frank Baum, author of the OZ books, but frankly, I was disappointed. It required more suspension of disbelief than my senior citizen mind could handle. Children might enjoy it, but I would have preferred more of a "Christmas-y" atmosphere.

Enjoyed it

I enjoyed this story very much. I loved how Santa was saved by deaths clutches at the last minute with the mantle of immortality. It had such a great fantasy world that seemed so real.

Wonderful Children's Story

This book listed as a book to be read for a unit study I picked up for free in our homeschooling group's Mom's Night Out, from another homeschool parent. The unit study was on four books, which we checked out of the library at first; then later ordered for our home library. We used some of the unit study with our daughter for the Kindergarten year, but not the entire unit study. It was on American Indian culture. She fell in love with this book at age 5, and still lists it as one of her favorites at age 7. I think this is partially because of the meaning in the book for her. She says she likes the way the people in it are depicted, and the colorful pictures. She says its meaning is that love can be a challenge.

I would likely never have picked this book off the shelf in the library myself. Although I like native American stories, I tend to go for the pretty pictures (Legend of the Blue Bonnet) in a children's book, not the bold colored, angular art. The boy feels estranged from his community because he does not know who his father is, then finds out that the sun is his father, through going through trials. The trials involve Kivas, or the ritual rooms found in Pueblo structures. In the end he is a part of his community. It IS a nice story.

the pictures are colorful and fun to look at

i remember reading this book when i was younger and hearing about it on reading rainbow. so i bought this for my girl Kendra; about a boy who goes through trials to "prove" his self worth and it's done through an indian themed story i believe. the pictures are colorful and fun to look at...hehehe it's a jpeg style drawing which i like.

Still one of my all time favorite picture books

Still one of my all time favorite picture books. I feel in love with it as a child and it still captures the attention of my students in the library. Colorful illustrations and a good story. A strong Caldecott Medal winner.

as good as i remember

My mother read this book to me when I was a child, and I remember loving it, but hadn't seen it in probably 15 years until I bought it for my nephew. It is as good as I remember.

I can attest to the fact that the high contrast, brightly colored drawings are mesmerizing for a small child. The best part of the book is when the boy must complete four tasks for the sun god to prove himself. The tasks are not narrated, you get to see how the tasks are completed from how the drawings change. It's so cool! I felt very smart as a little kid being able to discover what he did and figure it our for myself.

On a cultural note, the narrative is similar to the Christ story. Mother gives birth to the boy (a virgin birth) after the sun god sends a ray of energy to her. The boy grows up and wants to know who his father is, and goes on a quest to find him and prove that he is indeed the son of the sun god. (That's why he becomes an arrow to the sun!)

I think it's good for a child to be exposed to this story to begin to understand the universal elements of religion and that all cultures have a lot in common. Even those that seem strange are not so different from our own.

I can't wait

I just recently found this again as an adult to share to my son.
