Not any Mitford I know

This book fails on several counts

1. Nancy Mitford was not ever a rather silly girl as portrayed

2. She would not have fraternised with a servant in the manner described

3. The plot is implausible and relies on at least one unlikely coincidence

4. The resolution is completely implausible

5. The writing is competent but not gripping

There are supposedly 5 more books in the series. I'm sorry I spent money on the first and won't be wasting time on the next five.

PREDICTABLE BUT ENJOYABLE...

A fiction greatly enhanced by factual persons and events. An enjoyable read with characters and events both real and invented. Basically, a light, period,detective story but none the less a worthwhile listen - especially if you are a Mitford fan.

A curious endeavour

I wonder why this seemed like a good idea? A standard whodunnit with the Mitfords shoe-horned in. I'm not a Mitford expert, but it seems hard to believe that Nancy would have been quite so attached to a rather teary nursery maid with a violent uncle hanging about. And the heavy handed references to the sisters' foibles is grating (imagine - Pam loves animals and Unity is grumpy). Well read though, although the main character has a voice like a docker. All in all, I'd give it a miss.

I really enjoyed this who dunnit! Super plot and very well narrated. Hope there are more tales of Louisa and Guy to come.

Enjoyable read

I've read all the books in the Matthew Bartholomew series and I have enjoyed each one of them. I appreciate the great historical detail the author uses and she has an obvious understanding of the time, its people and its customs. She has created a very likable main character in Dr. Bartholomew and his companion, Brother Michael, is equally fun to read about. However, after more than a dozen installments in the series, the reader becomes aware of certain patterns in her writing and plots that do take away from the enjoyment of the stories. It seems that after reading all of the series' books, I can already tell who will be the villain/good guy/red herring in each of the stories within the first few chapters. The books don't much follow a central thread, so each story is basically a stand-alone that could mostly be read out of context and out of series.

However, despite a few minor issues, I still thoroughly enjoyed the book and I will continue to read all future Matthew Bartholomew books as soon as they become available.

Matthew does it again!

Very interesting look at the place and role of pilgrimages during the times. It was also fun to know what Matthew had forgotten, when it was a really important tribute to his friend. Early universities were excellent places for a good mystery.

This is the fifteenth Matthew Bartholomew book so most people listening to this book will know exactly what to expect - a decent and enjoyable historical murder mystery but not 'great literature'.

I thought the story drifted around a bit in this book and isn't as strong as some of the others. The whole thing seemed a bit too far-fetched and contrived. Plenty of foundation laying for future books.

Bloody Kessel is the sequel to both Bloody Iced Bullet and Bloody Rattenkrieg. This is the third book in the Bloody Stalingrad series, focusing on creating a realistic and historically accurate portrayal of the war in the east during World War Two. The characters are fictional, but all units, weaponry and actions are portrayed as they were in the winter of 1942.

I listened to this whilst exercising. He really made the characters come to life. I started to wonder if this is really what it would be like if Oscar Wilde and Conan Doyle did become detectives, the best detectives the world has ever seen

A great Victorian yarn!

This isnt high literature, nor is it part of the serious cannon of Ripperology. What this is is a wonderful Victorian murder mystery simply using the facts of the Ripper case to weave a fabulous story. Take it for what it is and youll be thoroughly entertained. The characters are likeable, and Wilde predictably entertaining. Ive read some reviews complaining about Wildes famous aphorisms being inserted into dialogue as though normal conversation and theres something in that criticism: it feel a little like a primary school introduction to Wilde and eyes might roll if you know the subject well. But it didnt detract from what was nine hours of entertainment, enhanced by Brandreths jolly narration.

Self indulgent twaddle

Clap trap & cliche of a book!! Self indulgent meanderings pandering to the usual and well trodden path of ripperology, add in the cliches of Oscar Wilde & Conan Doyle make this book utterly ridiculous!! The ending is pure Colombo or brandreth maybe trying an Agatha Christie poirot finale but it really is an unsatisfactory end and conclusion to one of the worlds greatest mysteries!! Nothing new or original about this book!! Quite lazy writing

It's like crack, you want more and more and more and more....love this series.

What can I say about this series other than we that love it, have no greater happiness than finding a new bit of writing from this author. After the great drought between book one and book two in the series, these little novellas are like water to the parched. Love the characters. I think she could just write about a day where they just interact over the breakfast table and lunch and dinner, and it would be perfect. You want to be with these characters. You want the ghost in the attic included and to know more and more about what's going to happen during the war....WARNING, if you read book one, you'll be like the rest of us, doing a happy dance when we are notified ANYTHING has been written about the characters.

Magical Cozy Mystery

If you've read the other Dr. Bones books, you'll be delighted by this installment in the series, set in WWII Cornwall. With a touch of magic and romance, Ms. Jameson weaves a tale to enchant and delight any fan of cozy mysteries.

I so enjoy reading these books you feel as if you are transported back in time to a much simpler life they are a very easy read and very enjoyable

Waiting for the next full length book!

I love the Dr Bones books! This short tale was very enjoyable as it takes you deeper into the characters' back stories and the relationship between Dr. Bones and the formidable Lady Juliet. Cornwall, the Second WW, 1939, folklore and the interwoven community...her books are a destination not just an entertainment. Her easy way of putting all the elements together pull you in to the place, the time, the crime, the people. Nice books.

Entertaining short story

This is just a short story - but a fun, quick read. I have a few quibbles with Jameson's writing and her plot choices, but... I keep buying and reading the books, so what does that tell you? The WWII/small English village setting is interesting, and although a sharp reader may guess the ending of this one early on, it's still a fun read. The "magic" in this one and the other Dr. Bones short story was just a bit too "twee" for my taste.

3 clever short stories

If you're a fan of Sherlock Holmes, you'll love these 3 clever short stories. They are definitely written in the same style as the originals by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The author, M. Pepper Langlinais, is quite obviously a fan of the originals. These we're almost as good as Doyle's work. The author uses the correct time periods and correct language of the period. The narrator, Jared Ashe, certainly narrated the stories perfectly. The only constructive criticism I can offer is to the narrator. The sound quality almost sounds like the echo of a bathroom. A little soundproofing goes a long way.

This book is terrible

I dont generally write bad reviews but this book is an exception. The recording echoes and the story just stops without an explanation of many mysteries of Holmess life. I was very disappointed.

It Must Have Been Good I Was So Ready To Hit

Doctor Watson in the head. The man could not keep his mouth shut. I always have loved Sherlock Holmes's ability to pluck concrete evidence out of thin air. The final story had me convicting Sherlock's brother for the mothers death. Maybe the butler did do it?

Well worth reading!
