But having listened to all the adventures from the start and the way the book is read and written has me excited for the next instalment. The pelicans lead by John Pearce is such a bond it's almost believable thrown in with Nelson well what can I say. To the reader wow just brilliant. To the author next book please

Fairytales could be real...

Ms Chance immerses us into the story at an attention grabbing point where our protagonist, Miss Ophelia Flax, acts her way (so to speak) into a job as a lady's maid in a scene that captures the societal disparities of 19th century Europe. Ophelia is a strong character. Her profession as an actress comes in very handy to enable her charm her way in and out of trouble. The lengths to which she's willing to go to save her colleague show how loyal she is. These endeared me to her. I must confess, I took a peek at the blurbs of books 2 and 3 in the course of my read and discovered that Ophelia Flax is also the main character in those, which told me there probably wouldn't be as much romance as I would have hoped for. However, the mystery and the twists more than make up for it.

I enjoyed the array of characters and places, and the premise that fairytales stem from true events. Much to my frustration, I couldn't guess who the killer was until the moment where anyone else would have guessed it.

Ms Chance's writing is crisp with bits of humour thrown in here and there to make the book a delightful journey from beginning to end. I definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a new angle to a classic story.

Fun page turner, just don't analyze deeply

Snow White Red-Handed is fun & fast-paced, comparable to a summer popcorn-action movie. Almost from the beginning there were red herrings & little mysteries that I couldn't wait to get answers to, such as who almost every character really was going to turn out to be. The main mystery of who killed Mr. Coop was pleasantly not one of those so ridiculously obvious it ruins your enjoyment of the book.

The set-up is purely for the sake of the convenience of getting to the plot. Nothing grounded, realistic, or deep here - I was not surprised to find out the author is a romance writer. The two main characters, Ophelia & Prue, just happen to be on a one way trip to Europe when they happen to unrealistically lose their jobs then happen to fall into their new ones that take them to Germany. They also seem to barely know each other yet be devoted like sisters just - because. (Actually it's Ophelia who is rather obsessively devoted while Prue seems strangely nonchalant.

Outstanding gothic historical mystery!

The Last Serenade is another thoroughly enjoyable gothic historical mystery by Amanda DeWees. This is the second story in the Sybil Ingram Mysteries and follows a few years after the first book in the series, Nocturne for a Widow, where we are introduced to Sybil, who is a spirit medium and her fiancé, Roderick Brooke, who is concert violinist. However, rather than setting this second story in the Hudson Valley of New York, The Last Serenade is set in the theatre world of 1873 Paris.

The story primarily revolves around Rodericks former lover, actress Julia de Lion court, who is being blackmailed by a former lover. Because Roderick still feels guilty for killing Julia's husband in a duel several years before, Julia persuades Roderick to travel to Paris to help her; and of course, Sybil comes along to help. [One of my favorite scenes is when Julia is found naked in Rodericks bed just after Sybil and Roderick checked into the hotel.] While our main characters hatch a plan to retrieve the documents that are held over Julias head, the blackmailer is murdered. The rest of the story is figuring out who killed the blackmailer, in addition to keeping Sybil and Roderick from being suspects.

DeWees writing is simply outstanding. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey that Sybil is taking to learn more about her mystical abilities to communicate with ghosts (she visits a renowned medium in Paris). And I especially enjoyed how Sybil supports Roderick to help him overcome his personal demons (guilt over the duel).

Horses for military remounts and pack animals are ready to head for the fort and payment is more than enough to satisfy the loan. Gincyâs dad needs one more hand to lead their third string, sets out posters, and then trouble hits hard. Her father is murdered, the mortgage holder rides up to the ranch within a few hours, and she cannot let people know of the murder before she has the cash to pay off the soon due mortgage. Her choices, to take on a stranger who has just applied, and look for one more stranger, and hold onto her reins as doubt becomes justified and all is not as it seems and the delivery to the fort is a week away on a hard trail. A fascinating read, well worth the time.

High Caliber Western

Liar's Trail's characters, a young girl, a faithful Indian, and two questionable trail hands, are so well drawn I lived through the reason behind the lie, the storm, a stampede and sabotage with them. After "the end" Liar's Trail stayed with me thanks to a well plotted and smoothly written narrative.

Only one word describes this western...Excellent!

Morris Tate & his daughter, Gincy have a small homestead in Rathdrum, Idaho Territory. When Morris Tate is ambushed on their way home from town, Gincy is determined to hide the facts of her father's death & deliver the remounts to Fort Spokane to fulfill the agreed contract & pay off the lien on their property. A young girl with grit & determination, but can she beat the odds & accomplish what seems to be a job that would be almost impossible even for a man, let alone a girl of eighteen & her grandfather/uncle Thomas Red Moon.

C.K. Crigger westerns never, ever disappoint but this one is totally outstanding. It is cleanly written & will grab you within the first five minutes of reading & hold you breathless until the very end. I absolutely recommend to any true western fan who loves reading a excellent tale. But, I will warn you...it's almost impossible to put down once you start!

Different

At best if you like a book that goes on and on and on and on you definitely get your money's worth from this one.

I wasn't planning to read this novel.

As per my heading, I had no plans to read this novel. Why! Not my time era. Simple as that. But, since I have read Mr. Southworth Spartucas series and my all time favorite Wrath Of The Furies, I would at least try a sample reading of The Reaper's Breath. I was pleasantly surprise in the first few chapters that The Reaper's Breath was going to be as good if not better than Wrath Of The Furies. The man (Mr. Southworth) has an outstanding talent in writing mysteries. Love, love the book.

You really can get emotionally involve with the William, main character. Even had a tear in my eye in a couple instances. Keep up the great work Mr. Southworth. I'm a big fan of your writings.

An ok Victorian crime drama

SPOILER ALERT. The book itself was ok . I gave it four stars as it did keep you guessing as to who the killer was up to the end. However I was disappointed as this will be the first of many books as the the theme of this book is that there was not one Ripper but at least nine.This franchise will probably give the Rocky franchise a run for its money. I for one am not looking forward to the future books in the series as one was more than enough for me. I will go back to reading my Sherlock Holmes tales for Victorian crime dramas.

Worth the read

A very enjoy story. Keeps you guessing the entire time. It would be a treat if there was a sequel at some point.

Robert's Work Never Disappoints.

I became a fan of Robert's writing through his Spartacus series. I was excited to find out that his new book The Reaper's Breath was just as intruging and addictive as those. It was hard to put down. I can say emphatically this a must read. Looking forward to book two of the series.

Good Book and Story... FANTASTIC Narrator!!!

Loved every minute of this book... too short...I wanted more. it was, however, truly the narrator that brought real magic to this piece.... the characters were so alive it felt like watching a movie!!! Can I have some more please?!?

A Good Start to a Historic Urban Fantasy Series

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Some stories work well in a shorter, but I found myself wishing that this one had been longer just to flesh out the characters a little more as well as the historic, 1930s era in which the events take place. Instead we leap right into relationships we have to take for granted and only get passing references to things like the Prohibition. However, it has peaked my interest to continue with the next book in the series.

If youve listened to books by Nicholas Olivo before, how does this one compare?

I've listened to the entire Caulborn series and can enthusiastically and unabashedly recommend that series -- both in terms of it being an excellent story, but having an incredibly expressive narrator who brings the book and every character in it to life. It also provides an interesting twist on urban fantasy, in a genre that (IMHO) has grown a bit stagnant and over populated with every new author and their neighbor producing a new urban fantasy novel on a monthly basis. Unfortunately, I wasn't as taken with this book, but I think a lot of that has to do with my dissatisfaction with the narration style.

What aspect of Gregory Peytons performance would you have changed?

The pacing of his narration and limited expression in his voice. Mr. Peyton does an excellent job differentiating among characters by changing the accent of his voice. However, I found his voice was too even-sounding for the most part. What engages me with the most dynamic audible narrators is their ability to make each sentence come alive just by the expression they use to utter each sentence. They don't just read the book, as they act it out. Their voices might gain in intensity or loudness or speed up the pace during action scenes.

For the most part, Mr. Peyton's voice, even while voicing the characters, remained so smooth and even toned that I gave up trying to listen to this audio book while on my morning commute, and instead listened to it at night while getting ready for bed, because there wasn't much excitement or expression in the narration to keep me alert. While I initially appreciated the fact that he gave the main character, "Doc Gravestone," an English accent, somehow it ended up making the character seem incredibly snobbish, emotionless, and arrogant. I'm not sure I would have ended up with that same impression had I read the book, instead of listening to it.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Yes! I'm both a fan of history, love Boston, and am a sucker for the urban fantasy genre.

Not quite up to the excellent standard of the series

I had preordered the book and was very much looking forward to this new installment in the series. However, though the cast of beloved characters is still there, moving in the shambles of post-war England, the plot moves sluggishly. There is something not quite believable in the re-opening of an old case; furthermore many readers will have guessed what happened and why well before Madden who in the past had shown himself far more astute. Was justice done in the end? Not all will agree. Altogether, fairly unsatisfactory. Hopefully the next one will be back on track.

Really sad at the outcome even if I had suspected it ...

An old case is drug up by an anonymous letter and a mysterious pendant. Because Angus was nominally in charge and the killer was hanged, any doubt upsets the old man. John steps in to casually investigate until a police investigation can be justified. Old secrets and dangerous connections are dug up. Really sad at the outcome even if I had suspected it for a while.

Good as always

This book was as good as always, but I bet you won't guess the end. The background is is right and gives you a good understanding of what England was like after the war.

I've read all the other John Madden stories and really liked them. Rennie Airth is a fine writer who seems to enjoy introducing philosophical and moral questions, and I like reading about them. But this time John Madden has lost his way, deciding to abandon his training as a (former) enforcer of the law in favor of acting as judge and jury. Worse yet, he plays God, and the fact his colleagues blandly accept it is totally implausible. In the end, only the murderer does the right thing, no thanks to John Madden. A major disappointment!

Looking forward to the next one.

I bought this about 3 weeks ago, but books that I had been waiting for, were released so I kept putting it off. I finally got to it and I must say, it was different, in topic and setting. It took a bit to evolve but was worth it. I hadn't noticed it was labeled "Book 1", so when I saw that, I was very excited. When the second book comes out, I won't have to re-read this one, unless I want to because for me, it was quite different from other fantasy stories I read. It was unique tale and most enjoyable. Romy Nordlinger read very well, occasionally I got the characters mixed up but not enough to affect the story. It is just exactly what the title says and a lot more.

I liked the overall concept of the book. However found it a bit drawn out and dragged in spots. The Narrator did a good job with the characters, which helped keep me interested til the end.

Very Good

Julie Mulhern continues to create entertaining and realistic stories with multidimensional and relatable characters. I'm going to buy the next two books in this series and look forward to the next book.
