    Publisher's Summary:
Murder in the 11th House is the first novel in the mystery series that introduces a unique character in the annals of detective fiction.
Astrological detective David Lowell gets involved in a new case thanks to his daughter, a young defense attorney who believes that a murder suspect is innocent.
A judge has been murdered in a New York City parking garage, and Joanna Johnny Colbert, a tough and mouthy bartender, is accused of the crime. Lowells daughter, Melinda, believes that her client has been wrongly accused.
To solve the crime, Lowell has the help of his hacker sidekick Mort, office assistant Sarah, and bodyguard Andy, but it is birth charts and street smarts that give Lowell the lead in his race against time. When he sorts through the misdirections of a group of suspects, he traces the crime back to a surprising source.
Mitchell Scott Lewis has been a New Yorkbased professional astrologer for more than twenty years. He is the author of the Starlight Detective Agency series.
    Critic Reviews:
"Murder in the 11th House begins a new series that introduces a unique character to the annals of detective fiction." (Gumshoe Review)
"Lewis' winning debut, the first in a new series, introduces New York City detective David Lowell, a highly intelligent, intuitive sleuth who's also an astrologer. Like Sherlock Holmes, the eccentric Lowell makes deductions that astound or offend those privileged to hear them. Lewis, himself a practicing astrologer, leavens the action with just the right amount of technical exposition." (Publishers Weekly)

    Just okay.
    Any additional comments?
I'm happy for the author that the majority of reviews were very favorable...but it just wasn't for me. The astrological component made it much more interesting than the book would have been without it.
The damsel in distress was unlikable. The protagonist was "fussy" & rather inflexible in his views of politics, lotteries & people who buy lottery tickets. The author spent an inordinate amount of time speaking to the "gambling problem"....thank you for the sermon but it doesn't make for entertaining reading in a mystery book.
The book was just interesting enough for me not to return it but I was ready for it to end.
    THE STARS WILL TELL
If you could sum up Murder in the 11th House in three words, what would they be?
    Astrological detective masterpiece!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Murder in the 11th House?
I can't tell as it would reveal too much about the story.
Which character as performed by John Lescault was your favorite?
    The Astrologer of course!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes!
    Any additional comments?
Can't wait to get his next two novels and listen to them. I have been fascinated with Astrology since I was a child - typical Leo. I wish I could get my chart done by the writer LOL.
    Great concept and execution!
If you could sum up Murder in the 11th House in three words, what would they be?
    Loved this book!
What did you like best about this story?
Loved how he brought in astrology, some legal history about it, and the politics of greed/paranoia of the entitled, privileged super rich.

    Five Stars
    Love the series
    Great Mystery Book
Book arrived promptly. I enjoy reading books in a mystery series. I highly recommend this author. I am reading every book in this series.
A Dinner to Die For - the Guilliam sisters are at it again
Claudia Bishop is on a roll with her story line about two sisters who own an Inn in mid-state New York. Both are a bit wacky, funny, and like to get into other people's business. The is always a murder or two to solve and this edition is no different. If you like light bed cozy type mysteries, then this will be a new favorite of yours.
    A Nudie Bar and Murder
Meg and Andy are about to be married, and Quill is working hard at making sure that happens. Meg seems determined to mess it up. Plus Jerry Grimsby seems to be mucking things up. He's supposed to be filling in as chef at the Inn at Hemlock Falls while Meg is on her honeymoon.
In the midst of all this, there's a fire at the old MacAvoy barn and a body is found. Then it is announced that Leo "Boom-Boom" Maltby and his business partner Norwood Ferguson will be opening Lovejoy's Nudie Bar and Grill in Hemlock Falls. Many of the women of the village protest it.
Quill has her own problems at the Inn. Doreen steps in to help, only does it really help? Quill ends up giving some promotions that provide their own challenges.
Can Quill find the murderer while making sure Meg and Andy get married in a few days? And can she do it without putting herself in danger?
I always devour the books in this series. I would love to spend a week at the Inn at Hemlock Falls. Quill and Meg are great characters and have really grown with the series. I love all the peripheral characters and the roles that they play. They really add to the story, especially all the town folks and the Chamber of Commerce members.
I highly recommend this book and the whole series.

Great story, great narration but some loose ends.
I enjoyed the dynamics of the story. I enjoyed how the author is descriptive about mundane things you never think about in a story that expands the imagery.
The storyline is decent but lots of loose ends for me. How did she kidnap the toddlers? What happened to the killer DA? What was the daughter's response to them hooking up?
Overall, I rate the story @ 4 stars b/c of the loose ends. Story is very interesting and sometimes laugh out loud funny. Well worth a credit.
    T.A. Ramble
    keeps you on the edge
Would you listen to Don't Cry again? Why?
this is a good mystery + romance. I do not like terror, and was unfamiliar with BB work. I am planning on buying more of Ms BB stories read by Karen White. This story kept you on the edge of your seat the whole listen, but it is still a romance story. I would listen again if time permits.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Don't Cry?
When JD stays with our heroine...he is just plain old sweet
Have you listened to any of Karen Whites other performances before? How does this one compare?
I went hunting for more of Karen White's reads and found this author...I took a chance as a good mystery is just fine and takes you out of the daily grind. After Karin Slaughter work, never again as her work is based on terror. (Natalie Ross is a fave reader and that is how I purchased a terror book!!) Ms White has a great range and I have come to look forward to her good range of characters. ( See her US Attorney reads by Julie James) She can interpret an author style so well, especially whit and humor)
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
several came to mind that were spread through the book. Brothers ordeal, father's grieve with another lone survivor mother, and the good change of attitude from JD's daughter.
    Any additional comments?
if you like a good mystery+ romance, then this will not disappoint...I have in my wish list the balance of ms Barton's books reads by ms white...Oh which to buy next., the Will Trent or the mouthy PI?
Great analiytic, southern, serial killer series!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend the whole series of Beverly Barton's psychological thrillers. The book was set in Chatt. Tennessee and crossed over into North Alabama. Ms. Barton lived only thirty miles from my home and thus, I felt compelled to read her books. I was so pleased to find them well written, with an excellent plot and who done it surprise in the end.

    Members Reviews:
    A women police officer story
Was looking for a new series to follow and came across this one that sounded interesting. I have not read any Mary Logue book before but do like Joyce Bean narration. I was not disappointed in the first book of the series, it sets the scene for the series. Claire Watkins husband is killed in a hit and run in front of her house and the accident was witness by the daughter Meg. Claire resigns her job with the St Paul homicide squad and moves to a small town in Wisconsin to be near her sister and raise her daughter in a safer environment. Needless to say the action begins with the killer coming after Meg and Claire's sister. Claire's neighbor is murdered. Lots of detention work, action, suspense and humor. Time is taken by Logue to build characters which is why I sometime enjoy a series over a stand-alone book. Shall try the next book in the series before I decide to continue the series or not.
    Story improves as book progresses
This book tells the story of a woman who has relocated with her daughter, following the shooting of her husband, which the child has witnessed. Clare is a deputy now living and working in a smaller county, but her policeman husband's murder still goes unsolved. Her former partner is helping work on that and also hopes for some romance with her.
Meanwhile a second murder has occurred where she now lives. Her gentle neighbor has been killed in his garden. There are some other characters who figure prominently in the book: of course the daughter, but also a concerned friend who raises pheasants, her sister, and relatives of the neighbor who is killed. They are pretty well-developed as characters and play a large role in what ensues. One or two characters are incompletely developed, and left me feeling I did not understand them--or their exact roles--as parts of the book, well enough.
At first I found either the writing or the reading rather off-putting. Hard to keep my attention focused. Then every now and again, some of the writing became unexpectedly good, reading more like an experienced author who handles the material very well. Then it would fade away, and so would my attention. But around the second half of the book, the writing picked up pace, was not so hum-drum, in fact was actually quite excellent in places, and I found myself not wanting to turn it off till the end.
Thus I found it to be an unusual listening experience. From about the midway point on, there was no question in my mind that the story was good, and I was hooked on listening. I don't feel that the narrator added much, if anything; probably detracted to be honest. I gave the story 4 stars because the second half was very engaging. But I would have given fewer to the first half. Felt like the author just couldn't get going in a way that held my attention for a very long while. And then suddenly, it turned very good. At one point I wondered if it had been written by two people.

Drawing upon his epicurean and investigative skills, the Gourmet Detective hunts the killer among omelettes Bourguignonne and vats of Madeira sauce.
Featuring many real recipes and actual cooking techniques, this delightful mystery is a charming romp through the kitchens of the finest gourmands.
    Members Reviews:
Cozy for "foodie" and fictional detectives buffs
A different kind of cozy mystery for sure. This first in the series of the Gourmet Detective finds this unnamed chef, turned food detective, who's goal is to find sources for difficult food ingredients and to determine recipes from various gourmet restaurants. When one of the privileged few attending the infamous Circle of Careme dinner dies twice, our detective goes on the hunt for the killer and the poison that can cause this strange manner of death.
This book almost seems like a spoof on "foodies" and fictional detectives. Many exquisite and different meals are described throughout the book. And most every detective that I've ever read about or seen on TV prior to the publication of this book, is referred to by the Gourmet Detective. Rivalry between chefs, food writers, and TV cooking personalities is portrayed throughout the book. The mystery almost seems to be the venue for these "foodie" things rather than being the main point of the book.
I actually enjoyed most of the food descriptions, detective references and the mystery, but the story might have been more interesting if the mystery had been a bit more focused. I listened to this on Audible and believe that the somewhat stuffy, condescending tone of the reader, actually made the book much more enjoyable. I would give another book in this series a try, but definitely only with Audible.
    Gourmet Mystery
Peter King has written a Cozy Mystery that thrusts the reader into the midst of the London Food Scene. He cleverly inserts his fascinating knowledge of food trivia, sleuths and gourmet cuisine into a delightful novel. Told in the first person by the self-important "Gourmet Detective" who has an eye for the ladies, David Baker's voices are fabulous. Fans of the Hallmark Channel tv version of the story will find it entertaining to see how this story was transformed from London in the pay phone days, to Modern Day San Francisco's infamous food scene. I can't wait to listen to the next in the series!
very pleasant, cozy mystery with a theme
a pleasant listen, I hope to listen to more of them. it left me cheerful.
Didn't like his attitude to women
Would you try another book written by Peter King or narrated by David Baker?
Probably no more books by Peter King but David Baker is fine as an American narrator.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Didn't get that far. I returned it after a few hours.
Did The Gourmet Detective inspire you to do anything?
Write this review and return the audio book.
    Any additional comments?
The detective's attitude towards women (all girls to him) really grated with me after a couple of hours.

    Don't!
Worst narration ever, He reads through action scenes with no emotion what so ever. He gives ridiculous Scooby Doo villain voices to the antagonists. It was torture.
    Just don't.
    Another complicated ride
Like Ludlum, Van lustbader's books have complicated plots, unimaginable situations and good guys/ladies that are bad and vice versa. I would have preferred the abridged version. In spite of these remarks I await his next book with Jack, Allie and Annica. Unrequited love and the bond between a young girl and her mentor have a grip on me. Damn the predictible unpredictability, throw away characters and Allie 's sudden ability to become super teen. I'm a sucker for this series.
Will love endure, will Ally grow to have a series of her own, only time will tell.
    Nazis, Murder, Betrayal... a Masterpiece
Lustbader did an excellent job with this book. The fast moving, ever changing, plot had me captivated. Another great read in this series.

Shortlisted for the Anthony, Nebula, Edgar, Shamus, and Gold Dagger Awards, best-selling author James Sallis is a master of the gritty crime drama. The Killer Is Dying tracks the fortunes of three men of vastly different ages, backgrounds, and ambitions. Though they never meet, a hired killer on his last job, a burned out detective, and a young boy plagued by nightmares have their lives intersect in compelling ways in the scorching metropolis of Phoenix, Arizona.
    Members Reviews:
    You Are Not Alone
James Sallis has given us 'a meditation of living and dying.' Sallis, who is known for his beautifully wrought books of noir, has outdone himself with this novel.
While Christian is dying in a hospital, hooked up to multiple IV's, and being kept comfortable per his written wishes, Detective Sayles whispers in his ear, "You are not alone". This is extraordinary on the surface, a contract killer and a police detective, two solitary souls connected in such a way. Neither really knows the other, but both realize each exists. Christian, a forty year contract killer, who finds his jobs on the internet under the heading of 'dolls'. Detective Sayles, a depressed and burned out policeman, whose wife is dying a painful death. And, Jimmie, a young man, living alone, trying to support himself through E-bay. Both parents left him at differing times, and he is just waiting for someone to notice that he is alone, all alone. How do these three come together? In many ways, these three are similar, cut off from people, from society, living lonely lives, eating, working, sleeping, waiting. Jimmie who has never had dreams, is having the dreams of Christian. Christian, on his last job, dying from a disease that leaves him unable to urinate and blind. Sayles, waiting for his wife to die in Hospice care. She doesn't want him to suffer along with her, so she enters Hospice by herself and leaves him alone. They all have some connections, but we don't see it at first. As James Sallis tells his story in sparse poetic language, we put the pieces together. We come to care about these three characters. We learn little bits and pieces about them, but we are left to flesh out the parts of each that fit our fantasy. That is the promise of James Sallis, we are given just enough and then we are left alone. Like his characters, we are part of the story.
This novel may not be the one to start your James Sallis discovery, but it is one of his best. You need to get to know how he thinks and writes, and starting with an earlier novel will be best. Each word seems to be carefully chosen. There are never too many words, even though at times, I wish there were more, James Sallis knows what is enough. I read that he tells his students, "You need to leave space. You need to let the story breathe. Don't overexplain. Let the reader join in the story." That is his mastery, he knows, he knows exactly what we want and need.
    Recommended. prisrob
    Not what I was expecting
This story follows three different characters but there are things and events that bind them. There is a killer who by the title of this book you know is dying, a detective who is looking for said killer, and a kid who dreams about the life of our dying character.
What I really love about this author is his style and the way his characters are very thought provoking.

    Agatha goes on "holiday"...
Not the strongest storyline in the series, bogging occasionally in guide-book style local historical detail, but entertaining nevertheless with Penelope Keith delivering an impeccable and delightfully handled performance as always.
    One of best in series!
Have read all the books in this series now and this is by far one of the most enjoyable!
    Agatha Raisin brought to life!
I love the way Penelope Keith narrates these tales, she makes each character individual & believable! Her acting combined with the great adventures make a great team!
    Hooked from the start
Since the Agatha Raisin series is not available in German, I started reading them in English. Penepole Keith IS Agatha. I downloaded a lot of the audiobooks and after finishing one, I cant wait to start the next one.
    Addictive Rubbish
I can't explain the attraction of this series of books for me. They're a collection of stereotypes strung together in completely preposterous storylines. The writing is appalling.
And yet for some reason I keep getting drawn back to their empty-caloried addictiveness.
This one is particularly bad with our heroine suddenly jumping into bed with the most oily man ever written and our emotionally unavailable hero off stage pursuing drug runners.
    Complete piffle.
I'm off to read the next one.
    Penelope Keith is perfection.

They do run along a sort of reliable format...I rather like that. I like the predictability of her stories. Penelope Keith knows when to raise Agatha's voice perfectly, much as I would do in my head were l reading it.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Agatha!! There is no-one quite like her and a little bit of her in most of us. She is opinionated, self-serving, but also insecure and above all very, very funny :)
Which character as performed by Penelope Keith was your favourite?
Agatha!! Has to be, but you must imagine the accent is being affected rather than one she grew up with.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I was rather upset that Agatha managed to ruin her chance of marrying a man who seemed to adore her :(
    Any additional comments?
I love being in Agatha-Raisin land and very much hope that MC Beaton can keep up with me ;)
    She is a one...
I enjoy the Agatha Raisin books. A lighthearted romp through implausible plot lines, populated by a regular cast of characters who are easily identifiable throughout the series and who display some all too human failings (some highly amusing and some irritating - as in life). All in all, pleasant escapism. I just prefer some storylines to others, hence the rating.
    Very Gloomy
I really enjoy the Agatha Raisin books and as usual Penelope Keith narrates this beautifully. However I found this story so gloomy and depressing that I am a little cautious about picking another one and finding it the same. please M C Beaton, Agatha Raisen is a character that makes me laugh out loud if I wanted to be depressed I would read Thomas Hardy. Hopefully the next book will be bit more cheery.
    As always, good fun
Would you listen to Agatha Raisin and the Witch of Wyckhadden again? Why?
Yes, mostly because I have already forgotten the story, and love Penelope Keith's acting.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Agatha Raisin and the Witch of Wyckhadden?
    Eeerm, can't remember
Have you listened to any of Penelope Keiths other performances? How does this one compare?
She is always reliable good - this was as good as her other performances.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, the story is very lightweight, untaxing, relaxing, and good fun, but not really gripping.
    Any additional comments?
    A jolly good romp!
    New man for Agatha
Since the Agatha Raisin series is not available in German, I started reading them in English. Penepole Keith IS Agatha.
