Terrifying, Mind-Altering Science Fiction

This is the first science fiction story by Raymond F. Jones I have ever read, so I don't know if it is typical of his work; but if it is, I am amazed his SF is not better known. Simply put, this terrifying novelette is one of the most powerful pieces of short SF I have read in quite some time. Originally published in Amazing Stories in 1961, this story seethes with a surrealistic sense of paranoia that reminds me very much of Philip K. Dick at his best. In fact, the plot of this story has very marked similarities to a famous story Dick wrote several years later. (I won't say which one, to avoid spoilers.)

Tom Shippey wrote in a recent review in the Wall Street Journal of a book by Tim Powers that "[m]ost fantasy authors aim at persuading you of the reality of their invented worlds. Mr. Powers makes you doubt the reality of your own." That is exactly what Jones does in "The Memory of Mars." Highly recommended.

A little hidden surprise

It was the first short story (or long) that I read from Raymond F. Jones and I really love it. It is a very intriguing story and kept your attention until the surprising end. It is a classic author of SF that deserves more attention than it has, his themes are focused on the human being and not in the technology. This story is about a guy that discover that his wife is an alien when she dies suddenly in a car accident. Look for more stories of Raymond F. Jones at Amazon, there are lots of public domain stories and most of them are excellent.

Brief sci fi horror

A man becomes suspicious when his wife dies and it appears she wasn't human. Before her death she talked about a vacation to Mars which he can't recall. Creepy sci fi horror.

Good imagination

Interesting story; even though the premise was becoming obvious about halfway through, it was still a fun read. I liked the ending also. Very good; Thanks

Not "Total Recall"

This classic SF short story is about a man who discovers his wife is an alien and that they took a trip to Mars he doesn't remember. It is a predecessor to "Total Recall" but done in the SF "Golden Age" flat characters and long explanations rather than action; that was acceptable then, but makes it dated and not too engaging now.

Astounding future

The year is 1997, and Landers has just rented a house. Mrs Cummings, the widow who lived there, has moved into a retirement home 20 years after the death of her husband.

While exploring the attic, Landers discovers four large, neatly tied boxes maked 'ASTOUNDING'. Untying one he finds a collection of 'Astounding Science Fiction,' and begins reading with the first issue, dated 1947. The back cover advertises Clark Ashton Smith's 'Thirteen Phantasms' for a dollar 'within seven days, and one dollar monthly until six dollars has been paid.'

Landers mails a dollar to the address in the ad. Days later his books arrive. And so begins one man's journey.

I would recommend Swords Against Wizardry, since it contains this and 3 other stories. Otherwise, this is one of the better stories in the series - featuring our friends in 2 different storylines which turn out to be the same.
