Pops is a story that pops!
I thoroughly enjoyed Pops. Having already read Music City Macabre, part one of the Low-Lying Lands saga, I promptly bought this add on as soon as I knew it was available. I went in with high expectations and was not disappointed. Though much shorter than the aforementioned novel, this quick romp through post-apocalyptic zombie insanity is in many ways an improvement over the novel, hence the rating being one star higher. Author Bob Williams' trademark wit and awesomely-deployed references are back in Pops. (If you don't know the connection between MacGyver and Stargate SG-1, educate yourself quick.)
If you enjoy zombie lore, this quick tale (took me about 30 minutes,) is well worth your dollar. The fact that the zombies are semi-intelligent and can even talk makes it even more awesome.
I look forward to seeing how Pops ties in with part two of the saga, and as Bob already know, I am jonesing for my next LLL fix.

The stunning cover promises a dark story of post-Descent dystopia and the text delivers it. In just a few thousand words, Williams introduces us to Pops Poplovich, shows us who he is at heart, shares his grief and sadness, and has him battling one last broken Freakâall while he is dying. A mysterious, unseen Watcher narrates the action, partly as reportage and partly as musings on Pops's life. Pops himself needs to get some things off his chest in the face of his imminent death and his ramblings become a touching eulogy.
The questions (Who is Admiral Shen, never seen, but the catalyst for the battle?) and lessons (What price forgiveness?) in this bloody story will stay with you long after the messy bits fade. This short story is well worth your time and money; buy it and take Pops home.

I really enjoyed this glimpse into The Low Lying Lands universe.The author is quite talented at world building and creating well developed characters.The sign of a great writer is when I am left hoping for more in the world they created.This short story left me hoping.

Pops is a short but well written tale that shows a small slice of life in the Low Lying Lands and sets things up nicely for the next novel in the series. If you like your fiction dark and bloody, this is well worth your time.
