    Publisher's Summary:
Christine is a young singer in the chorus of the Paris Opera. She hears an unseen voice that sings and speaks to her, which she believes is an angel. The voice agrees with this and offers to teach her more about music. The voice, however, belongs to a disfigured genius, Erik, who lives in the basement of the Opera house. He is the "ghost" who has been extorting money from the Opera's management and who has now fallen in love with Christine.
    Members Reviews:
    Absolutely, thrilling...
The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux is quite a tale. Dark, intense, and dramatic. Every page builds the momentum. Suspenseful and cleverly written. The Phantom Ghost is not a ghost at all. But a mere mortal. Yet he brings upon fear and darkness at the Opera. Love, jealous, and murder. This was an interesting piece of literature. I was in love. It had everything I expected and more. Gaston Leroux was a great writer. His words lured me deeper into his fictional world, The Phantom of the Opera. Music, death, and drama at the center. Absolutely, fascinating to read. I recommend this book to readers worldwide.
I bought this copy from my local bookstore.
A classic that never gets old
This is one of those stories that is such a classic that it gets periodic remakes in every medium. It's been retold in books (Susan Kay), masterfully parodied (Terry Pratchett), turned into a movie, a musical, you name it.
Despite his inhuman visage, Erik's tortured tale of love and suffering speaks to us all.
This is also one of the oldest books I know of to employ the "I am a researcher presenting my notes and interviews about events that really happened" plot device, and it carries that off well too, particularly as it helps to preserve some of the mystery surrounding Erik.
He was guilty of not a few horrors
I really struggled with this book in a lot of ways. The hero and heroine are both such ninnies that I really couldn't root for either of them. Christine is meant to be angelic, but the way she leads on the phantom seems quite contemptible. She does it to save her life, of course, but it still seems heartless and cruel (which reaction, I suppose, proves that Erik, the phantom, is the most sympathetic character in the story). Raoul, often described as a lad or boy or child, was hard to like also. His mercurial shifts from belief in Christine's innocence to accusing her of every possible betrayal were exhausting to read. And I have a hard time with a hero who, within the same scene, bursts into a "mad laugh" only to follow it by bursting into tears. Not that he's the only one who bursts into laughter or tears at every turn. All the characters did it. I was really hoping someone would just react by nodding occasionally, but alas, every scene involved extremes of some sort.
The structure of the book was not something I enjoyed either. The conceit--that the narrator is reconstructing these events from diaries, reports, journals, etc.--made for a very uneven reading experience. Just when I would become caught up in the storyline, there would be another authorial intrusion as the narrator jumped in and mentioned where this particular information came from. Aside from interrupting the flow of the story, it also called into question whatever scene had just taken place.

    Publisher's Summary:
Nevertheless, all the experiences and adventures they go through teach them the exact opposite. The reader will not be able to stop laughing at the entertaining account of all their misfortunes. Candide is Voltaire's masterpiece and an acknowledged classic of French literature.
    Members Reviews:
Great book but atypical format for hardcover disrupts reading flow
Candide is an excellent story, a concise yet conceptually soaring diatribe that unblinkingly lampoons the stigmas and realities of Voltaires time. The book is packed with scenarios that will make you laugh and cringe at once. I give four stars because the formatting on the hardcover book is a bit weird due to extra spaces in between paragraphs. This extra spacing disrupts the flow of reading and seems as if the publisher was trying to make the book more pages than it actually warranted with respect to the typical font and format of a novel or novella.
The best of all possible reviews
I decided to revisit this book after almost 40 years since my high school French class. It's amazing what reading it again after such a long time does for your perspective. Glad I picked it up again.
    Satirical Genius
Voltaire is a satirical genius, he leaves few stones unturned in this short novel. The critical responses are useful resources if you have to write a report for the book or need further insight into Voltaires mind.
    A quick witty romp!
What a fun read! I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is relatively short and moves quickly, so it's great if you want something witty without much commitment.
    hilarious
This book is a combination of genius, logical argument and humor. It is definitely hilarious. I laughed so hard as I read this book that i had never before. I highly recommend this book. it makes you think about the world around you and the people and their sufferings yet you only laugh at it. It does not make you sad.

    Title: Madame Bovary
    Author: Gustave Flaubert
    Narrator: John Richmond

    Publisher's Summary:
The story focuses on a doctor's wife, Emma Bovary, a bored provincial housewife, who abandons her husband to pursue the libertine Rodolphe in a desperate love affair.
Attacked for obscenity by public prosecutors when it was first serialized in La Revue de Paris between October 1, 1856 and December 15, 1856, it became a best seller when it was published as a book in April 1857, and is widely considered a masterpiece of realism literature and one of the most influential novels ever written.
Gustave Flaubert (1821 - 1880) was a French writer who is counted among the greatest Western novelists.

    A decent bargain
This audiobook offers good value for money, but for those who want a production with better sound quality and fewer slips of the tongue I'd recommend one of the pricier choices.
    An Enjoyable Listen
This was a rather casual reading of Madame Bovary, with page turning and occasional sips of water evident on the narrator's end. This did not detract from the enjoyment of this classic book.
    Traducción
¿Qué traducción utiliza? ¿Dónde consigo ese libro?
Necesito la versión escrita que utilizó este narrador.
Habré desperdiciado mi dinero si no la consigo.
    Not worth it
What disappointed you about Madame Bovary?
Madame Bovary disappointed me about Madame Bovary. Thought her character was selfish, wasteful and the major problem with society. She had everything but didn't see it and gave up on herself and others.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I would like to have seen Mr. Bovary stand up to her and not let her get away with so much. He really couldn't have been that blind. I also would like to have seen Madame Bovary pay for her actions. Wish their daughter would have somehow told her off or something.
What didnt you like about John Richmonds performance?
I enjoyed John Richmond's actual performance, but had such a hard time hearing him most of the time that I feel I missed some parts. His hushed tones were really quiet. The quality of the recording left a lot to be desired as I was listening to the book in my car, through the speakers and had to have it on max and STILL had a hard time hearing when I went above 30. GET A DIFFERENT VERSION!
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
The book made me angry and embarrassed to be of the same gender as someone so self-centered and lazy.
    Good reading...
    ...unfortunately I hated the story.
The production values are evidently a little low on this title but the narrator is engaging. Sadly the characters are not. I will certainly look for other titles by the same company, but definitely don't feel after hours of listening that I have just listened to a classic. Flaubert is talented and there are many moments of flair and great insight into human nature and relationships (as well as many, many skilled descriptive passages) - unfortunately there is only a single character in the whole book I cared about, and even they had an unhappy ending.

    Title: Madame Bovary
    Author: Gustave Flaubert

Length: 11 hrs and 38 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher's Summary:
A brilliant psychological portrait, Madame Bovary searingly depicts the human mind in search of transcendence.
    Editorial Reviews:
Gustave Flauberts salacious story of an adulterous doctors wife, Emma Bovary, continues to stir controversy over 150 years after its initial publication. Actress Donada Peters adds authenticity and humanity to the heroines plight, capturing Emmas yearning desire to live beyond the empty roles of wife and mother. The madames idle longing and restless boredom give way to a crushing emotional burden, as she grapples with the consequences of her marital infidelity. Nevertheless, Peters avoids the ignominious treatment of Emma so frequently favored by her real life critics. Rather, the Golden Voice recipient imbues the heroine with gracious wonderment, playful wit, and an endearing thirst for life.
    Members Reviews:
Take Care What You Wish For
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this version. It is very clearly read, and it is easy to follow the story, to make sense of Emma Bovary's situation in a way that I found more difficult when reading the book silently.
What other book might you compare Madame Bovary to and why?
Without doubt I thought of Anna Karenina. There are many similarities in the positions in which these women find themselves. Both of them admirably highlight the plight of married women in the times in which they lived.
However the similarities are only part of the picture - there are also many differences that add piquancy to the comparisons possible. Indeed there are many reviews and scholarly papers that discuss Anna and Emma.
What about Donada Peterss performance did you like?
I particularly liked the manner in which she differentiated the characters. Her use of accent was very exact.
Her own voice worked well with the story and she moved it along without any feeling of being rushed.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I found it too complex to listen to in more than 30 - 60 minute sittings. There is a lot of detail in Flaubert's writing and I wanted to savour it as I listened. This meant that I could feel overwhelmed by too much of the text.
    Any additional comments?
This is such a classic and yet it has such a simple presentation. It was a remarkable book in its time, given that it was about a married woman's adultery in its basic premise.
But it also exposed the ways that some of the main characters think and feel, which is also a new concept in novel writing in the 19th century.
    ouch
This is a sordid tale. Madame Bovary's death scene goes on for pages. How do I know how many pages? Because I bailed on the narrator before the end. Ms. Peters reads well, but has a brassy voice that doesn't do justice to Madame Bovary's flights of romantic fantasy, which are her only sympathetic feature. The book is otherwise an excruciating read, full of self-promoting and self-deceiving characters, with subplots often juxtaposed in ways that are very funny and very painful. Flaubert is smart and ruthless. I'm glad I read the book though it's hard for me to say that I enjoyed it.
It should have been divided by chapters
Would you try another book from Gustave Flaubert and/or Donada Peters?
    Yes
How could the performance have been better?
If the dowload were categorized by chapters.

An outstanding depiction of the last days of a condemned ...
An outstanding depiction of the last days of a condemned man. In his book, Victor Hugo is making a documentary chronicling life on death rows and contrasting them with maximum security "lifers" in 19th century France, As an opponent of capital punishment, Hugo argues that the death penalty undermines the fair administration of justice, Hugo does not believe that the death penalty should be applied to any human being, even in the case of horrific crimes,. For him, capital punishment can never be administered fairly and justly.
    Must read !
Amazing and heartbreaking, interesting to get a vision of the French "death row" at that time. I highly recommend it.
    excellent perspective
I read it in French, then in English, then in French again. It's a good book to learn to read in French. It is also a very good short book with lessons for all.

Dracula is the seminal gothic horror novel of its time as Bram Stoker introduced the world to the legendary vampire Count Dracula.
Published in 1897 and told through a series of diary entries and letters, the story journeys into the dark world of Count Dracula through the eyes of several different narrators. The novel explores many themes, the role of women in Victorian culture, conventional and conservative sexuality, immigration, colonialism, post colonialism and folklore.

    It's a man's world?
I have very much enjoyed listening to all three volumes of this narration. I have to point out several issues I have with the narrator. One jarring issue was listening to his voice as Van Helsing and making him sound just like Arnold Schwarzenegger rather than a Dutchman. He was also poorly convincing when he narrated the women's voices. Generally there was just not enough of a tonal difference between the characters to make it clear, while listening, who was the subject speaking.
    Good book, done well...
Dracula is by far one of my favorite vampire novels and I've listened to numerous audio book versions of the novel. This would be listed as one of the best audio book adaptations I've listened to so far. It is also the first audio book I have ever listened to where you can hear the narrator do more than just read the book. The occurrences are faint and don't distract from the reading, but are present periodically throughout the reading.
    Brilliant!
I thoroughly enjoyed Dracula, the story goes beyond the terror of an immortal diabolical creature; it has so much to do with friendship and love and how to overcome all obstacles. The narrator was also very satisfactory.
    Well Done
Where does Dracula rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Dracula has always been one of my favorite stories, Christopher Saul, and all those involved with the production who are not named Christopher Saul, served it well.
    Excellent Book and Narrator
Of course, we all mostly know this story. But I've seen it done too many different ways in movies. It was so refreshing to hear all the original detail. Excellent listen. Excellent narrator. Worth the great price!
