  • Madame Bovary Audiobook by Gustave Flaubert

    Title: Madame Bovary
    Author: Gustave Flaubert
    Narrator: Jenny Agutter
    Format: Abridged
Length: 2 hrs and 25 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-19-12
    Publisher: The Copyright Group
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Classics, European Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Emma Bovary is beautiful and bored, trapped in her marriage to a mediocre doctor and stifled by the banality of provincial life. An ardent reader of sentimental novels, she longs for passion and seeks escape in fantasies of high romance, in voracious spending and, eventually, in adultery. But even her affairs bring her disappointment, and the consequences are devastating.
Flaubert's erotically charged and psychologically acute portrayal of Emma Bovary caused a moral outcry on its publication in 1857. It was deemed so lifelike that many women claimed they were the model for his heroine; but Flaubert insisted: 'Madame Bovary, c'est moi'.

    Madame Bovary
While initially I found the book difficult for engagement, I learned, about 3/4 of the way through, that this is a book with much to be appreciated. The characters appear flat and trivial, stereotypical, really, but this is purposeful. The characters represent ideas or modes of thought rather than human beings. Madame Bovary is Romanticism, Homais is Enlightenment, and Charles, while in many ways the most flat in regards to opinions and passions, actually appears to be the most human without an undying subscription to any one idea. If anything, Charles is the picture of naive love for Madame Bovary. So, the book has a layer beyond the plot, the battle between Romanticism and Enlightenment, and Flaubert's journey with this is intriguing and telling. Finally, Flaubert is a master of syntax and vocabulary. The sentences alone are enough to appreciate this book. Flaubert truly mastered art for art's sake. I believe he did himself proud.
finds her life boring and her relationship unfulfilling and seeks fulfillment in both ...
I mainly picked this book because I had seen references to the story and especially to Emma Bovary in other works so I wanted to familiarize myself with the story. It's an older work but the themes resonate today...the young woman who marries for the wrong reasons, finds her life boring and her relationship unfulfilling and seeks fulfillment in both spending beyond her and her husband's means and in extramarital affairs. And there's the mother-in-law who never really approves of her, the sleazy self-aggrandizing apothecary with whom her husband, Dr. Charles Bovary, characterized as a somewhat plodding, unimaginative fellow, spends much time, apparently oblivious to his wife's desperation. I felt it was a book that deals with the effect relationships and expectations influence the direction people take in life including, and perhaps especially, the unfortunate choices people make.
    a classic French soap opera
I love French classics because they are so expressive and alive. This is my first Flaubert classic. Like his great contemporaries, Hugo, Dumas, Maupassant, Flauber's Madam Bovary is a magnificent French soap opera written with great style. His exquisite choice of words and style is reminiscent of one sitting down to a 10 course French cuisine. Course after course of delicious dishes to keep us engrossed in rural France life in the 18th century when horse drawn carts were cabs and conveniences for impulsive acts passions. Emma Bovary, like all of us who are made of flesh and blood and desire passion, fell prey to concupiscence. But it was his careless extravagance and bad financial management that eventually destroyed her.

These masterly poems span the whole of Nabokov's career from "Music", written in 1914, to the short, playful "To Vera", composed in 1974. The works are newly translated by Dmitiri Nabokov, and include "The University Poem", an extraordinary autobiographical poem in which Nabokov recalls his life in Cambridge, with its crooked alleys and age-old gates, teas at the vicar's and British girls. Included to are such poems as "To Russia" ("Will you leave me alone! I implore you!), the enchanting "Eve", and verse about America, sport, love, and poetry itself.

    Better than most poetry collections
I generally cant listen to very much audible poetry at a sitting, but I really enjoyed listening to this collection. The introduction is a bit boring and is skippable (unless you care). There is a wide range of subjects and tones, making this less monolithic than some collections.

The best book by the worst Narrator
The Scarlet Pimpernel is my all time favourite book. I decided to get it on Audiobook and there were a few to choose from, and stupid me choose this one. The woman is TERRIBLE! Her accents are annoying, she is American, and she sounds like she has smoked way too many cigarettes in her life.

  • Le Rouge et le Noir Livre Audio par Stendhal

Titre: Le Rouge et le Noir
    Auteur: Stendhal
    Narrateur: Yvan Le Bolloc'h
    Format: Abridged
Durée: 3 hrs and 42 mins
    Langue: Français
    Date de publication: 10-10-11
    Éditeur: Frémeaux & Associés
    Evaluation: 3.5 sur 5 sur 2 votes
    Genres: Classics, European Literature

A coming of age book of a psychopath written before the term psychopath was invented.
I was required to read part of this book in a French literature class when I was a university student, and I am now re-reading it. It's not an easy book unless your French is fluent, but it is available in English translation. I am amazed at how well Stendahl portrays the protagonist, Julien Sorel. He has all of the characteristics of a psychopath, but I don't believe that term had yet been coined when Stendahl wrote the book. Stendahl has a remarkable ability to reveal his protagonist's inner psychology indirectly by describing his actions and his thoughts.
This book can be read on many levels: As a coming-of-age book, a description of French politics in the early 1800s, and as a psychological thriller.
The title, variously translated into English but quite literally the red and the black refer to the red (revolutionary) and black (monarchist) tendencies in France. Julien's sympathies are split between the two as he has very secular ambitions but also trains as a priest.
I think anyone who reads this book in its French original or in translation will appreciate Stendhal's psychological insights.
    Product is inferior
Not only are there multiple typos but this book is put together so cheaply that it lacks publishing information. Claiming to be a copy of an earlier publishing, I get the impression that a non-French speaker sat down at a computer and typed it up...explaining the frightening amount of typographical errors. There is no publishing information to clarify not only which edition this copy comes from, nor from the current publishers who have chosen to produce these abominable books. I'm growing increasingly wary and distressed with the amount of independent publishers who are reprinting classic works in this manner. It is shameful.
    for Stendhal lovers
On page 305 of this long and remarkably non-traditional autobiography, Stendhal addresses his readers with this characteristically frank admission: "At bottom, dear reader, I don't know what I am: kind, unkind, clever, stupid.

    A Classic Story Turned Snooze-Machine
The wonderful classic would have been more captivating if read by the computer using Text-to-Speech. Whoever elected this narrator should seriously reconsider their idea of entertainment. It should come with a warning saying "Do not listen to this recording while operating heavy machinery." Terrible. Obviously, I didn't finish it, and would be ELATED to get a refund!!!!!!!!! I'm going to email Audible and request one. BLECH! BOO! BORING!!!!!!!
    Wonderful story, very badly read
This is a classic story about Russian poverty, written with homour and irony. The reader lumbers through either reading too quickly or stumbling over the words & the intonation is so inappropriate in places that it is really hard to follow some of the complex sentences. It sounds seriously under-rehearsed and the humour and subtlety is lost in the clumsy, heavy-handed rendition. The most annoying thing is that he gets the main character's name wrong every single time (it's Akaky Akakievich, not Aky Akievich).Did nobody listen to this before accepting it? Awful!
superb short story very well read.
What made the experience of listening to The Overcoat the most enjoyable?
    The many faceted narrative
What other book might you compare The Overcoat to, and why?
    Kafka,s trial
What about Deaver Browns performance did you like?
    The emphasis in various places
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    Is ambition a grievous thing?
    Any additional comments?
    Very thought provoking

Length: 6 hrs and 9 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-11-11

    Publisher's Summary:
The novels of Fyodor Dostoevsky, including the classic Crime and Punishment, secured the great Russian writer an exalted position in the literary pantheon of 20th-century authors. The Gambler stands as one of the literary genius most highly regarded shorter works. At the casino in Roulettenburg, Germany, a Russian family awaits word that a wealthy relative from Petersburg has died. But to their dismay, Granny arrives and begins gambling away their inheritance at an alarming rate.
    Members Reviews:
    Digestible Dostoevsky
This is lesser Dostoevsky, both in critical stature and in length. But it is also far more accessible than the longer works. The cast of characters, with the lengthy Russian names and confusing variations, is smaller, the plotting is more straightforward, and the time commitment is more manageable, but you still get the flavor of the master. You can enjoy the book without crib notes from Wikipedia or rewinding to figure out what went on. There are even flashes of humor here and there. It took a while to get used to the narrator, but once I did, the reading was solid. FYI, as with most of the Russian classics, there is untranslated French sprinkled throughout, and the final fifth of the book has more extended passages in French, but (speaking as someone with only the most rudimentary grasp of French) it does not spoil the overall experience.
