Title: The Spectre Bridegroom: A Traveler's Tale

Author: Washington Irving

Narrator: Robert Fass

Format: Unabridged

Length: 38 mins

Language: English

Release date: 12-27-13

Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 2 votes

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

The author of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle", Washington Irving perfected the American short story. His stories were written in an approachable tone and intended to entertain rather than enlighten.

Originally published in 1819, "The Spectre Bridegroom" is a ghost story about a baron and his daughter in historic Germany. The tale revolves around the daughters betrothal to Count Van Altenburg and the strange occurrences that lead up to the wedding. One of the few Irving stories set outside of the United States, "The Spectre Bridegroom" is often seen as a commentary on the differences between American and European society.

Irving does it again

I really enjoyed this short story and thus far is my favorite by Irving. Also fantastic performance.

Titre: Le Parapluie

Auteur: Guy de Maupassant

Narrateur: Pierre-Alain Olivier

Format: Unabridged

Durée: 1 hr and 7 mins

Langue: Français

Date de publication: 11-22-13

Éditeur: Grinalbert Polymédia

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Glorious classics, spoiled however by narrator

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I would love to listen to the same story narrated by person who doesn't put so much drama in every sentence, in every word.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Unizhennye i oskorblennye [The Insulted and Injured]?

The scene with Vanya visiting old couple and then witnessing the golden locket being broken was very memorable, but for all the wrong reasons. There was so much shouting, so much drama in every word read that it left me feeling really irritated - like after watching cheesy Mexican soap opera.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

1. Too much drama.

2. Female character was presented in a very manly manner. There was no change at all in reading male lines and female lines.

3. Mixing volume so much was very annoying. The voice would be quiet so you have to put the volume up, and then suddenly two sentences of proper shouting.

Red Hanrahan gets up to start immediately, but a strange old man sitting by the door delays him by starting a game of cards with him. As Hanrahan gets drawn into the card game, he finds himself increasingly mesmerized...and then strange magical events take over, and he finds himself wandering over the mountains following a mysterious dreamlike hunt.

Stefan Zweig (Marie Antoinette)
