Title: The Queen of Spades [Russian Edition]

Author: Alexander Pushkin

Narrator: Aleksand Fedorov

Format: Unabridged

Length: 1 hr and 34 mins

Language: English

Release date: 06-27-13

Publisher: New Internet Technologies

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 4 votes

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

The Queen of Spades stands at the peak of Pushkin's achievement in prose writing. The story was popular with the general reading public at the time, particularly for its striking plot. The story opens with a number of young officers conversing after a card game. One of them, Narumov, wonders why his grandmother, who possesses the secret of winning at the game of faro, never plays. It is revealed that she was once an avid gambler and was given the secret of the game on the promise of using it only once to save her from poverty. Hermann, a German engineering officer who usually never gambles, becomes obsessed with discovering the secret from the countess. He begins a correspondence with the countess's young companion, Lizaveta, who hopes that Hermann will deliver her from her poor position. They arrange to meet, but once inside the house, he confronts the old countess. When she refuses to reveal the secret, he pulls out a gun, and she dies of fright. During the countess's funeral, it seems as if the corpse winks at Hermann, and that night her ghost visits him and gives him the secret of winning. Hermann places the bets over three consecutive days. On the third day, he loses on the last card, the queen of spades. Having lost all of his money, he goes mad. The story is a society tale, and part of its appeal, particularly at that time, was its depiction of the cold glamour that characterized fashionable society.

More Uncanny than The Sandman

This is the Hoffman story Freud says he wanted to discuss in his essay "The 'Uncanny'" but was too complicated to summarize. So Freud discussed hoffmann's The Sandman instead. The Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud: " An Infantile Neurosis " and Other Works Vol 17Sadly, this story has never been translated into English. Another great Hoffmann story, Der Magnetiseur was translated in a hardcover book that is no longer in print or available on amazon.E. T. A. not a fan

I love German books and usually enjoy this kind of read. Unfortunately, this one was a tough go, never grabbed my attention and , what is rare, a book I never finished.

Title: Udvalgte fortllinger [Featured Stories]

Author: Fjodor M. Dostojevskij

Narrator: Karsten Pharao

Format: Unabridged

Length: 6 hrs and 26 mins

Language: English

Release date: 06-18-13

Publisher: Viatone

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

Andersen.

Titre: Pêcheur d'Islande

Auteur: Pierre Loti

Narrateur: Marc Hamon

Format: Unabridged

Durée: 6 hrs and 2 mins

Langue: Français

Date de publication: 06-17-13

Éditeur: Le Livre qui parle

Genres: Classics, European Literature

This is not in English as advertised. The book may be great if you can read French. Otherwise, it is a waste of money.

Title: Peter the Great's Negro [Russian Edition]

Author: Alexander Pushkin

Narrator: Aleksandr Vasil'ev

Format: Unabridged

Length: 1 hr and 20 mins

Language: English

Release date: 05-03-13

Publisher: New Internet Technologies

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

The novel opens with a picture of morals and manners of the French society of the first quarter of the 18th century; with the Negro's life in Paris, his success in French society, and his love affair with a French countess. But "summoned both by Peter and by his own vague sense of duty" Ibrahim returns to Russia. The following chapters, full of historical color and antiquarianism, sketch the different strata of the Russian society: ball at the Winter Palace and boyars' dinner at the boyar Gavrila Rzhevsky's place. The latter is interrupted by the arrival of the Tsar, who wants to marry Ibrahim to the Gavrila's daughter, Natalia.

Title: The Golovlyov Family [Russian Edition]

Author: Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin

Format: Unabridged

Length: 11 hrs and 27 mins

Language: English

Release date: 05-03-13

Publisher: New Internet Technologies

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

Searingly hot in the summer, bitterly cold in the winter, the ancestral estate of the Golovlyov family is the end of the road. There Anna Petrovna rules with an iron hand over her servants and family - until she loses power to the relentless scheming of her hypocritical son Judas. One of the great books of Russian literature, The Golovlyov Family is a vivid picture of a condemned and isolated outpost of civilization that, for contemporary listeners, will recall the otherworldly reality of Macondo in Gabriel García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Language: English

Release date: 05-01-13

Publisher's Summary:

The "Viy" is a monstrous creation of popular fancy. It is the name which the inhabitants of Little Russia give to the king of the gnomes, whose eyelashes reach to the ground. The following story is a specimen of such folklore.

Members Reviews:

Wonderful horror story

I love Gogol as a writer of humor, folk tales and satirist. I am familiar with the folk tales concerning witches, rituals of reading over the dead bodies. I especially enjoyed the story in Russian because you do not miss the fine "details" of the culture and the people in the countryside. In the original, the status of women is so glaring and so vicious demeaning. The seminary student' s murder of the old woman turned young dead woman shows that women's lives were not even worth considering. The entire story is more a hallucination perhaps drug induced. The tale inspired countless horror movies.

Schließlich siedelt Mendel zu seinem Sohn nach Amerika über, lässt aber den behinderten Menuchim zurück.
