    Publisher's Summary:
What mysteries lie buried beneath weeds and dust?
Following their wedding, Eilian and Hadley Sorrell journey to Brasshurst Hall, his family's abandoned ancestral home. As Eilian struggles to reconcile his new roles as husband and earl, he finds the house and the surrounding town of Folkesbury are not as they first appear.
Behind a mask of good manners and gentle breeding lurks a darker side of Folkesbury. As the Sorrells struggle to fit in with the village's genteel society, they find their new friends are at the mercy of Randall Nash, a man who collects secrets.
Soon, Eilian and Hadley become entangled in a web of murder, theft, and intrigue that they may never escape, with the manor at the heart of it all. Something long thought lost and buried within Brasshurst's history has been found - something worth killing for.
    Members Reviews:
    A riveting and well-layered read!
The Earl and The Artificer is the third book in the Ingenious Mechanical Devices series (that started with The Earl of Brass). In this instalment, Hadley and Eilian have just been married, and are moving into the all but abandoned Sorrell family estate in the countryside. But though the house has been standing empty, Brasshurst Hall is full of secrets.
Told within a richly described Victorian setting, this story is wonderfully well-layered. On one hand, there are beautifully handled scenes from a budding marriage that is not without complications. The emotional dimensions here are beautifully handled, and I would recommend the book for those aspects alone! But The Earl and the Artificer is also a delightfully suspenseful read. Thieves, murderers, and intrigue-makers all tread the streets in Folkesbury; the trouble for Eilian and Hadley is to figure out who is who.
I thoroughly enjoyed this read and its well-crafted cast of characters, whom I'm hoping to see more of in future books from Kara Jorgensen!
    Wonderful Neo-Victorian Steampunk Mystery/Adventure
As with any genre, steampunk novels vary in quality and in style. Finding an author whose work you enjoy, whose story worlds you like to visit again and again, is something to be treasured and shared.
The first time I read one of Jorgensenâs Ingenious Mechanical Devices novels, The Winter Garden, my area was under a tornado warning. The TV was on in the background spouting alerts and I started reading on my iPad to keep my mind off the storm. The fact that it held my attention speaks volumes.
Jorgensenâs new novel, The Earl and the Artificer, is book three in her Ingenious Mechanical Devices series, but works just as well as a stand-alone novel. The novel continues the story of the two main characters, Eilian and Hadley, from Earl of Brass. The characters have married and moved on with their lives as the new Earl and Countess of Dorset, but their personalities remain on track.
    Potential Minor Spoilers
It is not too big of a spoiler to tell you that the first chapter opens with Hadley elbow-deep in steamer engine innards, covered in grease, trying to fix their burned-out vehicle:
Leaning into the front of the cab, she brought her face close to the boiler as the heat of the kettle stung her cheeks. The metal coils of the heating element had melted into a blackened cake that smelled of burnt hair. Using the sides of the hood for leverage, she pivoted back until her satin boots met the roadâs white gravel.

Twists and turns in Regency London
    Any additional comments?
This was the first time that I have tried an audio book and I thought that the descriptive style and pace of The Man in the Canary Waistcoat was ideal for this format. The book does an excellent job of setting the scene for Regency London in the 1820's and it is clear that there was a lot of research into the various locations, living conditions, social attitudes etc. The underlying story itself is told from the viewpoint of our intrepid hero - Constable Sam Plank - as he tries to uncover a network of fraudsters who have developed a clever system to deceive a range of people. It isn't all straight forward though and Sam needs the help of his loving wife Martha and also Wilson, his junior constable. I really enjoyed the story and I will definitely be following the further adventures of Sam Plank throughout the rest of the series.

Inspired by a true story. On Christmas Eve, 1971, Flight 153 departed from Houston, Texas, carrying 140 people bound for Rio de Janeiro. Flight 153 never reached its destination. It seemed to vanish into thin air. The plane is caught up in a large thunderstorm and is forced to veer hundreds of miles off course and crashes in the jungle approximately 10 miles west of the Xingu River. The Xingu River is 900 miles long, infested with alligators, snakes, and blood sucking insects, man-eating fish and hostile Indians.

Their survival equipment consists of a rescue raft, a couple of machetes, a flair gun, and simple first aid kit. Only the Marine, Billy Sunday, has experienced the jungle before. Billy, who is suffering from survivor's guilt and flashback of the Vietnam War, would struggle to lead the group of misfit survivors out of the jungle alive.

Save your credit for a real story
I don't know whether this tale is good or bad, but the writing sure stinks. I love poetry, but this even stinks as poetry. And if that weren't enough, the whole first chapter is a discourse on Holmes literature and the Holmes and Watson characters. I don't need a lecture to read a book, and I would prefer to be warned that the "story" is actually a poet's attempt at relating a tale.
Holmes in verse!! Sorry not for me!
    Any additional comments?
I thought this was a novel. Instead I had to listen to a most irritating ryming verse which got annoying very quickly. If your expecting a normal audio novel forget it!Returning this one !

It was an oddly assorted company of passengers that boarded the S.S. Chetwynd in Hong Kong and Singapore to take passage to Freemantle. The old vessel, operated by a line that had a poor reputation, was the kind of ship that could hardly attract the finest of officers or crew and was patronised only by the least demanding or affluent of passengers. In this company, living in such close quarters, there was inevitably a certain amount of friction. But human passions would prove insignificant by comparison when the indescribable fury of the storm that hit.
    Members Reviews:
Similar But Better Pattinson Books Out There
This 1971 novel is one of many Pattinson adventures set on an old ship with a crew who don't all get along with each other and a battle against a storm. This time round it is the S. S. Chetnwynd a ship fit for the scrap heap whose owners are just waiting for it to sink to cash in on insurance. This type of ship is not obviously attractive to any seamen who have skill or options so those working on board are there because they have no other options for one reason or another. Many are resentful at the world in general for where they are in life on board the S. S. Chetnwynd initially voyaging to Singapore from Hong Kong where it picks up passengers who like the crew cannot afford to travel on anything better on the voyage to Fremantle Australia.
James Pattinson writes in an old man style where his characters use words that show Pattinson is obviously from a previous generation and not quite down with the lingo of today but this style does add something unique and enjoyable to his novels. Normally his novels are light and easy to read however Sea Fury is a bit of an effort to stick with, meaning the light enjoyment usual Pattinson factor isn't there.
Much better Pattinson novels worth checking out are Homecoming, The Silent Voyage, Skeleton Island, The Time of Your Life, Away With Murder, Blind Date, The Murmansk Assignment, Obituary for Howard Grey, Crane, The Animal Gang, Spoilers, The Golden Reef, A Car for Mr Bradley, Bavarian Sunset, The Sinister Stars, Fat Man from Colombia and Life Preserver.

Death in Shanghai is the first novel in M J Lee's Inspector Danilov series, perfect for fans of Philip Kerr.

    Death in Shanghai
Billed as a historical thriller it is written as a police procedural/mystery set in corrupt Shanghai in 1928. The story and the writing are both straightforward and good. The 2 main characters are well developed and likable. One plays the other subtlety as a foil. Refreshingly, the author appears more interested in entertaining his readers rather than impressing them with his mastery of letters and showing off his knowledge. The plot is predictable and itâs not a page turning thriller. Except for one scene in the middle and the ending it has no suspense to speak of. But I did find it entertaining, which is a very good thing. One warning. It contains some gory violence which may be objectionable to some. There is a sequel which I plan to read. Three and a half stars.
Do not expect this to be comparable to a Philip Kerr novel.
This is a readable book. The characters are one dimensional and the narrative tends to drag at times. To compare this to the Philip Kerr (Bernie Gunther) novels (as quoted in the book description by Amazon above) is a travesty. Do not purchase this expecting to get a novel comparable to a a Philip Kerr novel. It is not.
    Absolutely fantastic
This is a must read book. It ended too soon for my liking because I was so entertained that I didn't want it to stop. Inspector Danilov is an exciting person who really keeps you guessing. I was so impressed with this author's smooth flow of story and I didn't figure out who the killer was until the end.

What an unexpectedly engrossing read for the Chinese New Year holidays. Death in Shanghai is beautifully written. Shanghaiâs history and rich colonial culture in the pre-war period offer a beautiful backdrop to the bookâs cast of characters and unfortunate murder victims. If you take great pleasure from writing that delights in texture, depth and layers of nuances, then the book is certainly for you. It brings to mind movies directed by Christopher Nolan, which are rich in imagery, details and intrigue. Often, there are many clues scattered over his movies and gain in momentum towards the end. MJ Lee creates characters that develop over the story, while clues towards what is really happening, who the killer is and his motives are gently layered throughout the book. Having finished reading it once, I will be re-reading it to see what other little details and clues I might have missed the first time round. I am certainly looking forward to MJ Leeâs next book and for the characters to be turned into movie characters one day.
    Four Stars
The story is well written and pulls you into Shanghai and the narrator's personal dilema.
