A real English classic novel

A young Sherlock, and a total hit!

I loved everything about this book! I am someone who enjoys the classic Sherlock Holmes, but even more so I enjoy the "remakes" such as the TV show Sherlock etc. I loved this new take by seeing a young Sherlock (he is in his mid/late 20's it seems). Sherlock as a character seems spot on for how he is known and loved. He's inquisitive and guarded, but also brilliant. Sometimes he shows moments of softness but he never breaks character, and this book truly does him justice.

I also love the strong female lead, especially back in the late 1800's. She is a Doctor who takes the lead and stands strong. It's a refreshing point of view.

Also of note is all the historical context and stories wrapped in were simply incredible. It's very historically accurate & was a winner all the way around. This book far exceeded my expectations & the narration was crisp, proper & well performed.

I was gifted this book in exchange for my honest review.

It ranks in the top twenty five. It stays true to Conan Doyle's classic chracter. I got a bit lost in the Buddhist philosophy.

This is a great novel as it's looking into why a man committed a crime rather than who committed the crime. I thought that that was a very interesting take on a novel about financial crime, made ever greater by the fact that its set in Victorian London and financial forgery would get you hung.

The main character - Sam Plank - is great and you get a very Holmes and Watson feel from Plank and his wife. It was brilliant.

Like a good radio drama.

I enjoyed Fatal Forgery. The storyline and narration were good. Guy Hanson as Constable Sam Plank brought the whole story to life and I was transported to Victorian London. I did like it when Sam got excited at the trial and with all the different character witnesses quite quick fire. Felt like a Sherlock Holmes in Part and a James McLevy but without the sidekick.

The main downside is that this is the first in the Sam Plank series to be made available through Audible and I would really like to listen to the next one now to follow the story. So can you please get on with this now.

Superbly Absorbing

What made the experience of listening to Successio the most enjoyable?

Laid up in bed for a couple of days after a minor medical procedure, and with fading sight making reading difficult I wasn't looking forward to the enforced 'rest'. Enter Audible, Roma Novas and Successio. What a pity I only had two days in bed - I'd've been quite happy With Alison Morton's fabulous characters for company for a few days longer! As it was listening to the entire Audible series was 100% enjoyable - the only complaint... I want the rest of the series! Hurry up and get them recorded Audible!

What other book might you compare Successio to, and why?

The Roma Novas books, I think, are unique. They are in a class of their own. OTHER books will be comparing to Roma Nova in years to come I think!

What does Caitlin Thorburn bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

Her accent was just right for Carina.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

well, all of it! I was so engrossed!

Having read Alison Mortons Inceptio, Ive now read the second and third books in her Roma Nova series, Perfiditas and Successio. Unlike many book series where the originals not bad, these followups are better.

The series is really military science fiction, or at least alternative history, with a special forces bent. Unlike many military stories, the characters are well developed. They are human with human failings, strengths and weaknesses. They grow in power, they make mistakes, they learn. They have depth. You share their adventure. You care for them, somewhat (well, they can be a little anal). The authors habit of occasionally killing key supporting characters keeps the dynamic fresh.

The third book, Successio, has an exploration of insanity, both temporary and permanent. I found the temporary insanity in particular to be fascinating. The setup, the development, the way it progressed, and the resolution, both for the character who goes insane and those around him, made valuable fiction.

What made the experience of listening to The Voodoo Detective the most enjoyable?

I have listened to at least four audio books in the Detective Byone Series. I enjoy the New Orleans settings Treme, Storyville, the Quarter. Another aspect is the characters who populate the novels and how real they seem and how complex they are. The cultures and diversity. These are strongly represented in The Voodoo Detective specifically.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Voodoo Detective?

The confrontation and chase through the abandon building. The initial investigation.

What does Nicholas Patrella bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Though I'm no expert, my opinion is that Nicholas handles the French pronunciations and dialects very well. He has a clear neutral voice but can add dramatic elements appropriately.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

If you can't do the time,... Voodoo you think you're foolin?

Of the handful in the series, so far, that I've heard, this one, "The Voodoo Detective" is my favorite.

Short & Worth The Listen!

This story was a rare find in that it was short but complete, not lacking in any area at all. I was engaged from start to finish. This is a must read for all thriller fans. Nicholas Patrella did a good job as narrator with easy to understand and distinguishable character voices. I look forward to more from this Author and narrator. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Another "not so good"

Would you try another book from Ricardo M. Fleshman and/or Nicholas Patrella?

I had started reading from the 3rd book of this series and so far I've read 3rd, 4th, 5th and this 6th book. I had loved the 3rd and 4th book and the 5th book was disappointing. Sadly, this 6th book is also a bit of a disappointment. Looks like the 3rd and 4th book have set such high expectations in my mind that the other books of the series aren't meeting it. I still have hope though, that Ricardo will write something as fabulous some day. So, I will definitely try other books from him.

Has The Voodoo Detective turned you off from other books in this genre?

Canned response - "No. No one book can ever turn off a reader from an entire genre."

Simply Amazing

I fell in love with Miss Lizzie in 2001 when I first listened to her first adventure with Amanda and I have fell in love with her again in 2016. Walter Satterthwait is an amazing writer. He brings out a rich and very believable history and story with real life people in history. I simply cannot wait to see if Miss Lizzie and Amanda will return in a third book.

Awesome book!

First-rate mystery with strong character development and a highly satisfying conclusion. A wonderful opportunity to travel back in time to the Victorian era and experience the elegance and troubles of that world from the perspective of a daughter of the house. I was hooked by this charming and thought-provoking novel from the first page. Highly recommended!

Loved this book

Loved this book. I ordered the eBook and then liked it so much, I had to have a hard copy! Sweet and compelling. If I were a better writer, I'd write a smashing review...just read it! I think we can expect more great books from this up-and-coming young writer.

An interesting book with four different stories

Eliot Cross is an interesting character who gets himself into interesting situations. This little book is comprised of four short stories, all about Cross in different situations. While the character flows from one story to the next, the stories are rather disjointed. I was never quite sure who Cross was supposed to be in each of these vignettes; is he a detective who gets himself into weird situations almost by accident, or is he just a dude bumbling along as a part time PI who tends to stumble over bodies. As Hegenbergerâs first book, he has done a good job of setting the stage; I do hope that for his future books he employs an editor to pick up on words left out, or misused, and if he keeps the short story format, that they follow one another a bit more seamlessly. I am interested in reading the second book because I enjoy watching an authorsâ evolution and growing maturity with each passing book.

Thoroughly enjoyable!

It seems there was a lot going on in Columbus, OH in the late eighties. Private Detective Eliot Cross is kept busy solving crimes, some of which he was hired to do and one or two that just show up in his daily life. I could have spent more time with this wise-cracking gumshoe with attitude. I loved his old-fashioned principles and no-nonsense approach to dealing with people and their crimes. I especially liked his dialogue with brought a genuine snigger to my lips; a lovely throwback to the classic one-liners of the genre. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable read!

A Fun Read!

What a fun read! These stories were fast-paced and enjoyable. The narration was incredibly clear and really reflected the personality of the main character which made the entire experience very authentic. I would definitely buy another book by this author. He did a fantastic job of setting the pace and keeping my interest. I could visualize each scene, and man, did I feel like I was back in the eighties!!! It was a fun ride. If you like crime drama and want something quick, you can't go wrong with Cross Examinations!

The Mystery short is not an easy form to master

The Mystery short is not an easy form to master, but John Hegenberger has done it. The stories in this collection are fast-moving, atmospheric, and consistently surprising. Cross is an intriguing character and there's a continuing narrative thread about his mother that adds dimension to his character and depth to the collection. Definitely worth your time!

One from the Golden Age

Harkens back to the golden age of detective fiction. Cross is a PI tough and determined enough to get the job done, but possessed of enough self-deprecating humor and empathy for people in need to win the reader's admiration and interest. I'm looking forward to see more from Hegenberger.

Not what I expected

I am a great fan of M.J.T and have listened to every Mad Max book available. I needed something similar to read and sadly downloaded this book. It is narrated by M.J.T. Which I found interesting, his plot is set In Elizabethan times ,which I hadn't realised before downloading. Not my cup of tea at all. If I could I would return this book.
