In The Return of the Speckled Band, a new menace stalks Stoke Moran and once again Helen Stoner (now Helen Armitage) seeks the aid of Sherlock Holmes. The specter of the speckled band has arisen from an eight-year slumber and a woman's life may hang in the balance. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson again journey to the scene of the original Adventure of the Speckled Band.
This is a novel-length story typical of the Holmes tales.
The Sherlock Holmes Uncovered Tales are a series of original stories based upon the immortal characters, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The Return of the Speckled Band is the 12th story in the series.

Is Holmes truly as mean spirited to Watson as he seems?
Even though I encourage self published books, I still find it disheartening when their editors miss spelling and puntuation errors. The story was a different twist on the Speckled Band affair and even though it was quite plausible in the world of SH, I found it a little too dependent on Watson's appreciation of the fairer sex to make Holmes' point. I don't know, maybe I just don't like it when Watson is played for as the fool.
    Sequel to Speckled band
Great sequel to speckled and highlight into no such thing as happily ever after especially after a Holmes book.1. Writer seems to know his Holmes and Watson and modes and mannerisms of the late Victorian era. If you like classic Holmes you love this and ending is surprising
As usual this story did not disappoint. It kept me just as captivated as the first Speckled Band. I highly recommend this story
5 stars because of the story line ,characters and overall contents and suspense. Very much liked it. Thank you much.
    Five Stars
i really enjoyed this book and plan to add it to my sh library.
    Wonderful
Best pastiche I have yet read. No gimmicks or other nonsense. Looking forward to reading others in the series and am hoping for more of the same.

    Title: A Parliament of Crows

    Narrator: Laura Jennings
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 27 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-11-16

    Publisher's Summary:
In A Parliament of Crows, the three Mortlow sisters are prominent American educators of the 19th century, considered authorities in teaching social graces to young women. They also pursue a career of fraud and murder. Their loyalty to one another and their need to keep their secrets is a bond that tightens with each crime, forcing them closer together and isolating them from the outside world.
Their ever tightening triangle suffers from madness, religious zealotry, and a sense of duty warped by trauma they experienced as teenagers in Georgia during Sherman's March to the Sea. As their crimes come back to haunt them and a long history of resentments toward each other boils to the surface, their bond of loyalty begins to fray. Will duty to family hold or will they turn on each other like ravening crows?

Outstanding book from start to finish
Where does A Parliament of Crows rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
A Parliament of Crows would rank up at the top of the audibooks I have read, and I have read quite a few. It is short enough that you can get through it in a few sittings but due to the nature of the book you feel that you have heard the history of the Mortlow sisters lives.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Vertiline is my favourite character. I feel she is most relatable because she comes across as the lesser evil of the 3, she has a reason for everything she does, it is all about what is best for her family and I think that is something most people can relate to, although most would not go to the extent she did.
Have you listened to any of Laura Jenningss other performances before? How does this one compare?
No this is the first time, but I felt that she done an excellent job at bringing each character to life.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There were many great moments, most of which were very moving but I can't go into detail without spoiling the plot, and this is a plot you do not want spoilt.

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
A mysterious and entrancing story, The Other Mrs Walker is the compelling debut from Mary Paulson-Ellis.
Somehow she'd always known that she would end like this. In a small square room, in a small square flat. In a small square box, perhaps. Cardboard, with a sticker on the outside. And a name....
In a freezing, desolate Edinburgh flat, an old woman takes her last breath surrounded by the few objects she has accrued over a lifetime: an emerald dress, a brazil nut engraved with the Ten Commandments - and six orange pips sucked dry.
Meanwhile, guided by the flip of a coin, Margaret Penny arrives back at her old family home, escaping a life in London recently turned to ash. Faced with relying on a resentful mother she has never really known, Margaret soon finds herself employed by the Office for Lost People, tasked with finding the families of the dead: the neglected, the abandoned, the lost. Her instructions are to uncover paperwork, yet the only thing Mrs Walker, the old woman in her current case, left behind is a series of peculiar objects.
But in the end it is these objects that will unravel Mrs Walker's real story: a story rooted in the London grime and moving from the 1930s to the present day, a story of children abandoned and lost, of beguiling sisters and misplaced mothers, of deception and thievery, family secrets and the very deepest of betrayals; in which the extraordinary circular nature of life will glitter from the page. For in uncovering the astonishing tale of an old woman who died alone, Margaret will finally discover her own story, too....

    Awful
Can't even finish it. Worst use of monthly subscription ever. Morose, tedious, joyless... I could go on. Have no interest in finding out what happens. None. None whatsoever.

sad story, so many lies . it wasn't for me x u suppose I wanted the truth!
    Fascinating story
From the beginning, I was intrigued by this mysterious story. I loved the plot and all its characters. But it was very hard to follow. The story jumped back and forth between 2011 and 1900's. I also felt the writer was too descriptive and made reference to similarities, unnecessarily. But also, the reader/listener was made to read between the lines to understand the plot. It made the story line very confusing. However, the overall story was captivating. I think I will have to listen to it again to really fully understand everything that happened in the Walker / Penny families.

    Publisher's Summary:
Only the most intriguing mystery could lure Sherlock Holmes from the comfort of Baker Street in the winter of 1898...and it came with the ghastly murder of a gravedigger in the most bizarre of circumstances. Thus it was that Holmes and Watson travelled to the tiny German village of Darmstadt to unmask a callous killer with an even more terrifying motive...and all within the long, ominous shadow of Castle Frankenstein....
    Members Reviews:
Sherlock Holmes investigates the curse of the Frankensteins
Autumn, 1898. Sherlock Holmes receives a letter from the Burgomeister of Darmstadt, Germany. The town's gravedigger was brutally murdered and one of his legs was surgically amputated. A little girl was the only witness, and she reported seeing a giant, hulking monster carry away the gravedigger. The Burgomeister's concern is as much for the reputation of one of his town's oldest families as it is for his townsfolk's safety. Soon, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are on their way to the continent to unravel the mysteries surrounding the murder and the town's famous family -- the Frankensteins.
David Whitehead's SHERLOCK HOLMES VS. FRANKENSTEIN in the novelization of the screenplay that was written for the yet-unmade film (which, at one time, was to reunite YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES' Nicholas Rowe and Alex Cox as Holmes and Watson).
The story is a quick read, running about 40,000 words. Whitehead doesn't attempt the Watsonian voice, preferring to tell the story in third person (as there are several scenes that take place outside of Watson's presence). Holmes' investigation plunges Watson and himself into deeper danger as they threaten some of the town's secrets, and Whitehead's writing conveys an almost Hammer-esque atmosphere. Graveyards are investigated, the secret history of Mary Shelley's novel and the Frankenstein family are revealed, and as the novel nears its climax you'll wonder if the solution to the problems of Darmstadt is mundane or if there is something far more sinister and unnatural at work.
The only thing I felt the novel missed was a final chapter in which Holmes, sitting down in a comfortable chair and smoking his pipe, explains to Watson (and the reader) how he pieced everything together.
For a $1.99 on the Kindle, I was perfectly happy with SHERLOCK HOLMES VS. FRANKENSTEIN. It was properly atmospheric, Whitehead's take on Holmes felt genuine, and the story had momentum. I enjoyed it.
    Highly Recommended!
When I heard that author David Whitehead was going to turn his attention to both Sherlock Holmes and Frankensteinâs monster, I knew it would be special. Davidâs considerable talent and passion for writing has produced an envious bibliography that includes Westerns, horror, suspense and even romance. David Whitehead is a powerhouse of talent. Sherlock Holmes Vs. Frankenstein was just as great as I thought it would be. I love being right. Based upon the screen story for a forthcoming film by Gautier Cazenave, readers will plunge into the traditional world of Holmes and Watson, and the set-up captures the feel of the original stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. This wasnât surprising because David has co-authored several Sherlock Holmes tales with Steve Hayes.

Stunningly captivating story with fantastic narration
The story was great. The plots and its twists kept you on the edge of your seat . The character development and back stories were well developed. The narrator stole the show and put it all together, the voices, the accents were all just amazingly executed. I received this audiobook from the author narrator or publisher for free via audiobookblast in exchange for and unbiased review
plenty of action and mystery for an enjoyable ride
A strange discovery is made in an archaeological dig in Argentina, not the ancient ruins of an ancient civilization as they are hoping, but an underground cold-war era bunker. Why is it here and what is it hiding? The archaeologists dont get a chance to find out as the site is immediately taken over by American thugs posing as Homeland Security.
The chase begins and the action continues across the world, Northern Ireland, Cuba, Russia and more. No character is what he seems, all are hiding some secret past that reveals itself as the story unfolds. The Neo-Nazi captors want the relic that will give them immense power while being unwittingly manipulated by their Israeli masters. All will stop at nothing to recover it. Plots within plots unfold like layers of an onion, everyone double crossing everyone else.
The brutal and stupid Neo-Nazis seem to have unlimited luck as they force the Irish and Argentinian archeologists to do their search across the globe. Friends become enemies and the listener is never quite sure who is ultimately the good guys. It keeps us off balance, but always hating the racist Neo-Nazis.
The action is nearly non-stop, only pausing enough to give the listener some insight into the characters, usually raising more questions than answers. The secret group in Israel is shrouded in mystery and innuendo that leads us to the sequels for answers. The plot has some serious holes, unfortunately. The characters are just too lucky sometimes to be believable, stumbling on major discoveries seemingly at random, more to move the action than anything else.
The story is performed by Gary Furlong who does an excellent job. There are quite a variety of accents in the story and he does them well, keeping the many characters discernible and identifiable. He is enjoyable to listen to and gives the story its appropriate mood.
This is an entertaining story with some flaws. The historical chase in the style of Indiana Jones is fun for most listeners.

    Publisher's Summary:
In Victorian London, the greatest city of the richest country in the world, the industrial revolution has created a world of decadence and prosperity, but also one of unimaginable suffering. Ever-present in its streets are rats, parasites, filth, death, decay, danger and sorrow. Catherine Eddowes is found murdered gruesomely in the street. When the police make their report, the only indicators of her life are the possessions carried on her person, likely everything she owned in the world. In Of Thimble and Threat, Alan M. Clark tells the heartbreaking story of Catherine Eddowes, the fourth victim of Jack the Ripper, explaining the origin and acquisition of the items found with her at the time of her death, chronicling her life from childhood to adulthood, motherhood, her descent into alcoholism, and finally her death. Of Thimble and Threat is a story of the intense love between a mother and a child, a story of poverty and loss, fierce independence, and unconquerable will. It is the devastating portrayal of a self-perpetuated descent into Hell, a lucid view into the darkest parts of the human heart.
    Members Reviews:
Sensitive Portrait of the Life of a Ripper Victim
This elegant and moving little novel takes its inspiration from the personal effects found on the body of Catherine Eddowes after her murder during the Autumn of Terror in 1888. Eddowes apparently carried all that she owned in the world with her, and Alan M. Clark extrapolates a life story from these items. The result is a powerful and well-researched meditation on the conditions faced by women in the East End of London during the late Victorian period.
This is not a novel about Jack the Ripper or about Eddowes's death (which is covered in a few brief paragraphs); it is a tragic and compelling tale about a woman's life. Its sensitive story puts a human face on both the so-called People of the Abyss and a victim of the Whitechapel murders.
Alicia Rose's narration fits the feel of the novel very well.
The Downfall of the Pretty Girl
I have now listened to three of the four books in the Jack the Ripper Victim series, and I see that Alan Clark's fictional biographies of the women, made famous by their murder, are historical treatises on the plight of women in Victorian London. We have be told, when reading about Jack, that his victims were drunken prostitutes, that they had husbands and children whom they abandoned in favor of the cruel life on the streets using their bodies to earn their doss. In other words, to Victorian men, women were less than nothing, mere chattel to be done with as they pleased. Giving a life, replete with emotions, needs and desires, to each of the victims allows us to see these women as the human beings they once were.
Each of the books provides a totally believable scenario for the life of each victim. His account on Katherine Eddowes differs slightly from the other two about whom I have read. Her life had a definite turning point that led her down the path of over indulgence in alcohol and giving in to the need for money by prostituting herself. The history contained here is in some ways less appalling than for Annie Chapman and Polly Nichols. Alan Clark has struck a balance that lends more credence to this series of fictional biographies.
This is the first book in the series where the soon-to-be victim voices an awareness of Jack.

Tons of Fun and Full of Amazing Stuff about the Loch Ness !!! (â=^.^=)
I am nine years old and I like this book because it was super interesting. The Loch Ness Monster is a myth that I have knowed for ages and it was really cool to read it in this book. There were lots of different things in this book like possible things that the Loch Ness Monster could be. (Or maybe the Loch Ness Monster really does exist!!!) And there were also fake things of the Loch Ness Monster too. =)
The origins and sightings with dates where the Loch Ness Monster were seen and how, was so cool, I never knew it was seen so long ago and the first sighting story is my favorite. There was lots in this book that Iâve never heard of and the seal part was amazing!! Thatâs what I think it might be and it could actually be any of the other things, too, might even be more than one thing???? (:
This book is tons of fun and I like finding out all the different info on the Loch Ness. I read another book from this author about another myth, Bigfoot and it was as interesting and helpful as this book was. These books are cool and fun to read and I think youâll going to like this book as much as I do and I so hope to visit Lake Ness one day! :D
Fascinating book of facts, myths, and debates
This book about the Loch Ness monster legend is satisfying because its focus is on the legend and stories of Nessie rather than the attempt to convince you that the monster is real with questionable sightings. The presentation is neatly organized by recorded sightings as early as 565 A.D along with disputes and controversies that challenge these sightings. It is interesting that people are still recording sightings and unusual moments captured on film or scientific equipment, yet there is nothing conclusive. The author refers to phenomena in the area of Loch Ness that might lead the human eye to believe that it has seen a monster. It is a fascinating book that strives to let the readers make their own decisions with the brief report of facts and legends.
    Good book I enjoyed it

The 31st novel in the popular Victorian crime series featuring Thomas and Charlotte Pitt.
Thomas Pitt arrives at a devastating bombing in Lancaster Gate to find two policemen dead and three more gravely wounded. London's anarchists are blamed, but as Pitt and Inspector Tellman investigate they find it looks increasingly like a personal vendetta against those particular men. Did they lie about a drugs raid that went fatally wrong, and let an innocent man hang?
The idea of police dishonesty cuts Tellman to the quick - he joined the force to protect society, not exploit it. But he must uncover the truth, however much he wants to resist the signs of blackmail and corruption. With the threat of further bombings, and their superiors pushing for a quick resolution, Pitt and Tellman find their every move scrutinised, and their own lives suddenly at risk...
Treachery at Lancaster Gate is the exceptional new historical thriller from the master of Victorian crime.

    brilliant
As usual, a wonderful and credible account of the ramifications surrounding Victorian policing and politics. I found it hard to put down (perhaps I should say turn off). Exciting and dramatic, it addresses what would have been almost unthinkable to the public in those days, police corruption. Add this to an account of opium addiction in a young man of gentle birth, and you have a cracker of a book. Its a matter of personal choice, but I did not care for the narration.. I found the voice too light, and the passages where the narrator read words from the female characters unconvincing and a little irritating.
    As brilliant as ever!
One never tires of the twists and turns of story; sometimes joyful, at other times heartbreaking, but always thrilling! A compelling story with all ends tied neatly up.
