Whoever wrote the publisher's blurb seems out of contact with the book. The police chief chose to move for one thing. The multiple plot lines seemed a tad over ambitious, but each is interesting. There is the management of the mail where there is no post office and the solution found, episodes of irrational ethnic hatred, a murder, and the discovery of a body more than a hundred years old. Plus, there are twists and surprises that make it a really interesting read.

A great author/narrator combo

Very enjoyable short story. Rich and true in historical detail. Would of like to known more about what happened to remaining characters. Narrator was entertaining. Minus sound effects, it was reminiscent of an old western radio program. Would definitely turn in next week.

I always love a good western and this mystery story set in the old west was so nice to hear. Im no stranger to ONeil De Nouxs writing (mysteries and historical fiction) and liked this story when I first read it. The audio version gives it a different feel, like I found a lost recording of a heartfelt yarn. Mr. Dzwonkowskis voice is perfect for this story.

A Mystery with a Romantic Twist

Though there is indeed a mystery to be solved, the story soon becomes a poignant romance rather than an action packed shoot-em-up as so many mysteries seem to do. Well written and nicely performed, The Naked Lady will certainly capture your attention.

Excellent range of accents and voices bring the characters to life - this is her 3rd book in this series and her enjoyment of the genre is obvious

Wow!

I bought this book because it was on offer and it looked interesting. What a find! I loved it and I couldn't put it down. It really is historical fiction at its best. There is a strong plot, interesting and well drawn characters and the narration is excellent. I was very disappointed when I got to the end, but I have since found that there are a number of other books in the series. I had started one of the most recent books in the series which just goes to show that it's not necessary to read the whole series because this is a strong book in its own right. I have already bought some of the other books.

So relaxing to sit back and listen to another exciting episode of Rome and Vespasian.

Brilliant!!!!!

Absolutely brilliant. Iv listened to it twice now and i find it very easy to get lost in it and not pay attention at work haha.

I really really wish the first 3books were available on audiobook aswell.

another great book

The series continues to get better and better. This author really puts together characters that both make you smile and tear your hair out in frustration. I can not recommend this book and the rest of the series enough.

This is the third of the Gower Street Series, equally perplexing and wonderfully narrated by Emma Gregory.

Amazing! Brilliant!

Fantastic story, great performance, this series of books never fails to thrill. A well deserved rating of 5 stars across the board.

a disappointment

Almost didn't finish the book. Great narrator. Got very fed up with the repeated accusations of murder and the narration by March - especially when drugged. The only good - actually great - part was the narration by Sidney Grove... brilliant.

On the whole, a disappointment and I won't listen to the next book for a while.

Not as good as the previous stories - sadly disconnected in style

I enjoyed listening to this series of stories until this book. The story started well like the previous two but halfway through it felt like the author had got tired of writing the characters and therefore the narrative became broken up with different styles and 'publisher' interjections. I stuck with it in the hope that it got better but it bounced from one twist to the next, with the author seeming to have so little interest in each one and moving on quickly. A real disappointment.

Now as good as so many others.

Sherlock returns!

A must read for Sherlock Holmes fans. The author of this short story has remained true to the original literary Holmes and style of writing, while breathing fresh life into the character with new adventures. A stolen identity and a search for a golden apple.

Beautiful Language

If you are a Sherlock Holmes fan, you'll find what you want here--Sherlock Holmes, Watson, and a mystery that is skillfully unraveled. The process of Sherlock Holmes' reasoning skills is as awe-inspiring as it should be. He presents his evidence and observations, and you are left thinking, as the reader, "Wow, I wish I could think like that!"

But my favorite part of this short story is the language. There were several places where I thought, "Man, I love how that was written." Just the smallest things are enough to make me marvel.

The first sentence starts it off perfectly: "Today seems to me particularly vile in nature with skies as grey, grungy and tattered as the laundry around the lower flats." Later, there are other gems of sentences such as this one: "The time between the discharge of her duty and her disappearance was short enough to pass as magic." Another great line: "The streets were already beginning to buzz with life even as last nightâs dew arose in sheets of steam."

This story really got me to thinking more about language. It's not enough to simply cut to the action as soon as you can--you should breathe life into your stories by respecting the beauty that language can reveal. I adored all the sentences like these which were to be found in the work--wonderfully crafted, yet not extraneous to the work as they very well could have been.

As you read this work, pay attention to the beauty of the language. We do not often receive as many gems in a work as this short story offers.

What made the experience of listening to Tightrope the most enjoyable?

Being able to pick up Marian Sutro's story from where the previous book finished. I Like Simon Mawer's writing style his characters are believable and it is interesting as the plot moves from the end of WW2 to the early part of the Cold War

What did you like best about this story?

Marian Sutro,she is a survivor, hardened by her SOE training & working undercover in France, her experience of prison,the Gestapo & the concentration camps.She remains true to herself, clinging to the wreckage of what's left of her personality, trying to do what she thinks is right and using what she has been taught to achieve this. I suspect many of the SOE agents returned psychologically scarred by their experiences, not all were feted, Simon Mawer has done a good job of showing what it was like for just one of them.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Marian leaving the cottage in the middle of the night, with the intent of killing herself, to put an end to the suffering caused by her experiences.

Listen to The Girl Who Fell From The Sky before listening to Tightrope. They are both excellent books.

On the fence about a sequel that didn't need writing?

I know what other reviewers meant about the narration. Truly grating...the inflexions at the end of sentences was pretty irritating. Not one I could listen to for long periods. His voice changed the compelling heroine of Girl who Fell from the Sky into a simpering floosie...

Overall, it was one way to wrap up the life of Marian but a bit disappointing, for her as much as me! I almost wish I hadn't picked it up.

The narrator nearly lost me at the beginning with his pronunciation of Vevey (Vee-vee) but I stuck with him...unfortunately it didn't improve. Worst of all was his whispery voice for Marian. I understand he had to make a distinction between her and the other (mainly male) characters, but whispery is sooooo not Marian - she's feisty, courageous and confident in her own considerable abilities

Poetic, Powerful and Dramatic

What made the experience of listening to The Surfacing the most enjoyable?

Enjoyable may not be the best word to describe the expeience. More like fascinating, moving, intriguing and sometimes harrowing. The writing vividly describes the expedition to find Sir John Franklin's expedition who was lost looking for way through the N.W. Passage and the compelling story of the characters who become ice-bound there..

What other book might you compare The Surfacing to and why?

I've never read any thing to compare with this. I felt a similar reaction to "Lord of the Flies" when I read that many years ago but this was more realistic.

What does Chris MacDonnell bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

This narrator has a great voice and doesn't over-play the emotional experiences the characters are going through. He allows the writing to be the star of the work and tells it in a way that made me feel it was spontaneous and I was hearing the writers voice as he told the story. I'll certainly look out for more from him.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

In the frozen, tortuous Arctic wastes... the will to live and love are all there is.

The writing is poetic but at times, blunt and to the point. The story is fascinating. The human spirit and ability to survive through the toughest, coldest, most inhospitable and bleakest of environments is a large part of the story. The ability to find and understand love and the human condition in this sitution is another. Terrific writing and great narration.
