Love a new take on the genre!

I absolutely loved this title! I picked it up on a whim and immediately dropped my other books to put all my effort into this one. This is a take on LitRPG that I have not experienced yet and I loved it! The main book is more about world building than anything else but the side book at the end was a story within the story and I enjoyed it as much as the main story.

The narrator was great and has not let me down on any titles he has worked on that I have had the pleasure of purchasing.

Lost interest

The MC would say that he wanted one thing but yet he would do the exact opposite. He was very inconsistent. Other then that the story was not what I expected and was very boring for me because the MC did nothing. It felt like he sat there while everyone around him did everything for him.

Needs a different reader

An entertaining book but a reader with a slight lisp makes it very hard to take action scenes seriously.

too heavy on the relationship for my taste

the gaming part of the book was good and I enjoyed it. However the romance Parts which was most of it was a little over-the-top for my taste.

Drops off about 1/3 in

I enjoyed the first alpha company book, it seemed to show promise, however this book does not deliver. It gets bogged down in a lot of high school esque social nonsense approximately 1/3 of the way in. The book also focuses on the romance/sex portions too much in my opinion. Its like the author wanted to write a romance novel but needed to tie it to this series somehow. These parts are just graphic enough to be awkward when the come up on an open speaker, but not juicy enough to get off too, making them mostly just annoying. Ultimately it feels like the story didnt really progress that much from the last book, and the progress it did make didnt really come from any conflict or growth by the characters.

The narration is pretty good, although it seems as if he only has one setting, Intense. Overall I liked it from a production point of view

I wont be continuing the series, which is sad because I thought it had much potential.

Let Down, Thought This Book Would End Series

But no, author spent 3/4 of it making listener's learn the altruistic natures of ALL the characters. Then making the bad guy, or girl in this case, not so bad. The first two books sucked me in, the third held my attention, but number 4 had me hitting fast forward so many times. Ughhh!

A uniquely creative world with an awesome voice

I say this for all the books when I say,

Despite some minor issues, this world is flourishing, creative and full of charm. I love the characters and the incredible uniqueness of events. Vikas only furthers seal the deal with his wide array of voices that truly bring this world to life. It wouldn't be the same without him.

I'm ready to continue to the definitely thrilling conclusion.

It just keeps getting better!

I'm a fan of everything Rachel Aaron/Bach writes, and this latest entry into the fantastic Heartstrikers series is no exception. Each book builds on the previous one, and the story just keeps getting better and better.

After the harrowing cliffhanger of No Good Dragon Goes Unpunished, we pick up right where we left off, and the action and suspense does not let up for even a second. What happens to Marci? Is Amelia really dead? Will Julius go mad with grief before he figures out What Happened In China? Will Chelsie ever reunite with her lost love and finally be happy?! What are the Nameless Ends? WHAT IS BOB'S ENDGAME?!?!

I'm happy to say all but one of those questions is answered in spectacular fashion in A Dragon of a Different Color. This book actually had me clapping, fist pumping, and cheering out loud at parts, and holding my breath in fear at others. Get ready to feel ALL OF THE FEELINGS as Vikas Adam puts in the best performance of his audiobook career yet.

If you are a fan of fantasy, action, magic, dragons, or any combination thereof, start at the beginning with this series - you will not regret it.

I would give this 10 stars if I could. Rachel has set us up for one hell of a finale in Book 5, and I cannot wait.

(one minor complaint: I'm not sure how audiobook production works, but if there was a director or editor involved, someone really should have caught the mispronunciation of the very common Japanese name "Abe." I cringed every time it was pronounced the same way as Abe as in Abe Lincoln.)

Plot building

Wow, so good! So many plot elements tied together and built upon that it's a level above previous books plot wise. Can't wait for the next one!

Worth listening, entertaining Things to know tho

The book is worth listening to and I am def. buying the next one. The plot is original enough and if you're super into audible and the sifi/adventure/litrpg genres it's entertaining. However I would like to make 3 pointers.

1. The main character is kinda stupid. If he had as many brain cells as the times he forgot people dint know his abilities he probably wouldn't be having as many problems. The one saving grace of this is that everyone including himself denotes that he is kinda dumb. So whatever I guess.

2. With 95% of the characters in this book being female you may have wanted to pick a female narrator... that would just make sense. Not that the narrator is bad but you can tell its hard for him to do a lot of female voices and well ...everyone is a girl...moving on

3. The situation does kind of devolve into a harem situation that it appears some books of this genre keep doing. The cheesy excuse is that it was said that the builder would be male so the darkness unleashed a plague killing all the males...right. Well I guess its acceptable because there all demons. lol At least it's classy enough not to go into detail.

Dont get me wrong. I don't want to just complain and it really was entertaining, but you should at least know these things before diving in.

Same Concept, less enjoyable delivery

While listening to this I couldn't help but think it's a less developed version of Super Sales on Super Heroes. I won't go as far as to say it was copied from that particular book as the publish dates are far too close together. However I couldn't help but feel that they're basically the same book. There's even a reference to Pancakes (which could just be coincidental).

The flow of the dialog seemed overly simple. So much so that I couldn't help but feel that things actually started to feel constructed instead of a living breathing thing that helps immersion and sympathetic outlooks for the characters to develop.

The narrator did a decent job and could be better suited to a different cast in my opinion, but it seemed like most of the characters had a more masculine voice than the only male character in the entire book.

A Good Yarn and Nothing More

I'll be blunt, this is not Shakespeare. Hand this book to a feminist to read and you'll likely have her head explode. However, if you're tired of books with a message, books with politics and meta conversations about reality then, hey, this might just be the book for you.

I repeat this book is not a literary classic and, refreshingly, it doesn't try to be. Yes, it is a bit of an attempt to cash into the growing genre of litrpgs, though its more of a high fantasy. Yes, it is a bit of a male power fantasy.

Not as good as the first.

This will be a pretty long review, I'll add numbers and hope that helps.

First of all I can see why some people hate it and why some love it. I read the first book and listened to this one, which may have been a mistake as I had a lot of the voices different in my head and some of the pronunciation I found to be weird. Now, I am going to try to rate this FAIRLY, meaning while I have my own opinion on certain things, I will rate from a pragmatic/logical standpoint. (Kind of like if the story was about 2 men and their developing romantic relationship, while personally that would be at best 2 stars (if it was funny) because it's not of any interest to me, I would try to rate it based on the delivery or development instead.)

My biggest issue was that the MC is a bimbo. And I would like to point out that a male bimbo is just as irritating as a female bimbo, at least we are generally given 2 reason why the female bimbo is put up with by the others.

Now, I understand that the author wanted comic relief, but, he tried to do it TOO often, in fact if there was a chance at comic relief, no matter how small he took it... every time. And just like when my niece says something funny, then she says it over and over and over again, I have to explain that it isn't funny anymore, if you are going to retell it, you let there be a good delay between retellings. The author needs to learn this too. That said some of the jokes did have me chuckling a bit. (which is very good considering how I was biased against the humor therefore less likely to be amused). This is the main point of the character being a bimbo, he would stop doing whatever he was doing because of NO multi tasking capabilities and basically stare off in space while he follows a random train of thought. I feel that's enough about that.

Now about the main companion, lots of people complained about her, and I was bothered by her too, in fact I also wanted her gone, BUUUUUUT I feel this is also a side effect of the bimbo MC, because the author decided to make the MC the scapegoat for 99% of the comic relief (40% of the actually funny comic relief) this companion which was used for the delivery of the jokes suffered because most of the time it WASN'T funny and came across as simply being an asshole.

Loved it!!

Laugh-out-loud funny and tear-inducing in turns... this is the first book in a series, and I'm already very impatient to purchase the second! S. E. Smith is often ingenious in creating alternate worlds, and doesn't fail here. This novel is of the same quality as Smith's recent "Ella and the Beast". Highly recommended. Buy this one... you won't regret it.

Very sweet romance

This is a very simple romance story. Simple ideas, simple romance. Good book for a simple book

It started weird then got better just not enough to keep

It's pretty young and childish. The narrator did very well with what he had. I'm not particularly fond of his female voice though. Love his male voice!

Charming!

This story was a romance about a rather clumsy woman who accidentally stumbles into a dragons treasure cave when she gets caught in a storm while hiking. Fortunately, she has a fascination with dragons since she was a child and is actually rather happy to be there. The dragon has been alone for many years, ever since a witch turned all his people to stone. I like the way SE Smith weaves the story and it has a good ending, though not all is resolved- hopefully there will be more audiobooks in this series to see what happens! Narration was well done.

Im definitely equally as addicted to this new series as one can be!

Just as countless MMORPGs have captured the hearts and minds of many of us, this series will have you staying up late and shirking your duties just for a taste of escape. Tad (Talon) is by far one of the most entertaining main characters I have experienced in my audible journey. One instantly empathizes with him and feels the twists and turns in real life as he does in this DR environment. Beautiful concept, excellent writing, imaginative storyline, and inventive use of the MMORPG genre.

I find it fairly hard to believe that MC was a game developer. For someone who is a game developer the MC made some decisions that doesn't seem accurate to me. For example) the scene where he gives a beggar a coin with full expectation of a quest/reward or the scene where he walks into a shop and begins breaking pots at random. While in games these concepts can be a real thing the way the MC does not logical assess the situation or even just ask his friend does not seem like a probable action or way of thinking a developer with years of experience would take.

I understand what the author wants to do with the whole "don't make deals with the devil" theme, but the consistent emphasis on the theme I feel is unnecessary. As the reader I already understand what happened/is happening the first time you mentioned it. It wasn't as clever as it could have been.

The lore that was used to help with the final scenes was sub-par. A cryptic poetic message that tells the MC to do what they were already doing in the first place doesn't make a good reveal or realization.

For the sake of not spoiling too much for those that still want to read it I will just say that the ending is cliche.

AMAZING

I love this series. It just keeps getting better and better and makes me what more. I can't wait for the next book in the series to make it to audible.

Does not disappoint.

Lyrical and Alluring

In full disclosure, this was the first time I have ever listened to a novel instead of read it. I thought Id enjoy it during my 45-minute commute each morning and evening and was looking forward to the 14.5 hours I wouldnt need to find something to fill the time. The problem is, I loved the story so much I couldnt put the book down and I finished it MUCH sooner than planned. Not a horrible problem to have! LOL The other note about listening instead of reading (on my Kindle) is I missed the ability to highlight specific/favorite words and phrases.

I read in a book review that the book is beautifully formatted, with lots of drawings throughout and pictures of old newspaper clippings inserted between the chapters. Unfortunately, I missed all of that too because of listening to the Audible version. BUT, I absolutely loved listening to Julia Whelans inflection and many voicesI will definitely seek out other novels narrated by her.

Overall, I thought the story flowed and is very lyrical, alluring, delicious, and wickedly fun. I was engaged from the start and, as I mentioned above, I didnt want to put it down. The characters are wonderfully detailed. I loved the tidbits of information sprinkled unexpectedly throughout the story; those bits of details sometimes felt out of place but then, brought to the surface later, are why the time period and individual characters are so well developed and the story so enduring.

Pagans, this book is for you.

This book was exactly what I was hoping for. Great imagery, great characters. The story wasn't too heavy, without being paper thin. The author obviously did a great deal of research and applied it to the story wonderfully. I don't want to blather on all day.

Sometimes a character is so flawed they are no longer believable. Nate Temple is one such character. When he gets the upper hand fighting bad guys, he monologues until the bad guys get the upper hand again. The bad guys are not plausible either -- any one of them would have killed Nate the first time they met him. Perhaps while Nate was monologuing. He spends most of the story ignoring every tool which might allow him to prevail, including his magic. The book gets less interesting after enough "Jesus Christ! This guy is too stupid to live!" moments.

Not the best

This was an extreme disappointment and more so because of the expectations set by the previous books. This is a David and Goliath story, denoting an underdog situation, David, a contest where a smaller, weaker opponent faces a much bigger, stronger adversary, Goliath.

Nate is predicted to be the most formidable master. He still does not know how to wield his magic even at an elementary level. He finds himself against a savvy foe that his grandfather/great grandfather, at his most skilled level, had difficulty fighting.

He had a loyal following in book one because he was powerful, decisive and had the resources to win. He now looks like a buffoon when postulating the rightness of his cause when his foe has repeatedly knocked him on his ass. He is the corner stone of the group and he goes into battles on hope and inspiration. His followers are willing to lose life and limb and he is totally out magicked in this book

Our emotions are being manipulated, by the author, by retarding the power of Nate. This is a set up for the predictable situation where we must suffer the death/maiming of characters while Nate is getting his ass kick. The author takes us to an abyss filled with sadness when our heroes lose what they most cherished. I am a bleeding heart and orchestrating deaths/resurrections for an unoriginal plot line makes me angry.

His resources are depleted, and the sobering body count of his unwavering belief in goodness versus evil has broken his spirit . It was disheartening to see the foul-mouthed wizard rich play boy brought so low. The Temple legacy takes a destructive blow, which will change what I love most about Nate.

The author takes the Grimm Brothers fairy-tale monsters and the premise of the Grimm tv series to create a new story line for the Grimm Brothers.
