Title: Badge of Infamy

Author: Lester Del Rey

Narrator: Emmett Casey

Format: Unabridged

Length: 3 hrs and 28 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-24-09

Publisher: Jimcin Recordings

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 5 votes

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Classic

Publisher's Summary:

Lester del Rey was a prolific American science-fiction author and editor. In Badge of Infamy, Earth is controlled by huge and powerful "lobbies". One of the biggest and most powerful is the Medical Lobby. Dr. Daniel Feldman dared to violate one of their rules in order to save a friend's life. As a result, he has become a pariah, shunned by all and forbidden to touch another patient on penalty of death. Doc Feldman escapes to Mars, where the Lobby is not quite as powerful.

He is welcomed by the colonists, but, since he continues to break rules in order to save lives, he's hunted by the authorities. Then he discovers a Martian plague that could wipe out humanity on both planets, Feldman finds himself a pivotal figure when war breaks out between the two worlds. Earth threatens to wipe out the Mars colony completely unless a cure to the plague is found - and only Feldman has even a chance of finding it.

Two by Lester

This volume contains two stories by Grand Master Lester Del Rey. In the Sky is Falling David Hanson finds himself in some kind of advanced medical machine being put back together after a construction tractor fell on him. The strange people that are rebuilding him are using a combination of science and magic. Once back together he discovers that he has been brought back to life to save them because their sky is falling; literally. A second group wants to kill him to prevent him from fixing the sky. They believe that this false sky is the shell of an egg and that when it has completely fallen the people of the planet will be ushered into an advanced stage of their existence. David is pulled back and forth between the two groups with only his nurse Nema, a certified, registered virgin, as a true friend. Ultimately he must choose sides and eliminate her certification.

Badge of Infamy is too real life, in many ways, to not be scary. The Medical Lobby and the Space Lobby have humankind in a strangle hold. Daniel Feldman lost his license to practice medicine because he performed an emergency operation on a friend in the field to save his life. It is a crime to perform surgery outside of a Lobby hospital, so he becomes a shunned has-been and out on the streets. By coincidence (or is it?) he gets a chance to go to Mars, where a group of rebels make him their doctor. A mysterious disease starts killing off the settlers, so David starts looking for a cure, but unauthorized research is also banned by the Lobby, so David is now on the run, racing both the cops and the plague.

I loved this story and read it twice. It is a story of how power corrupts and is quite relevant to today's world, where it seems that every organization has the same marketing plan; to achieve monopoly status. I awarded five stars for Badge of Infamy than The Sky is Falling.

Title: Victory

Length: 1 hr and 44 mins

Language: English

Release date: 08-07-09

Publisher: Jimcin Recordings

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 9 votes

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Classic

Publisher's Summary:

In Victory, one of his best short novels, a victorious captain returns to his home planet after an alien war and finds that victory has a very steep price and that Earthmen seem to have suddenly all become cowards.

Editorial Reviews:

Victory, a 1955 novel by Lester del Rey, takes place at a time when Earth is the most prosperous and peaceful planet in the galaxy.

Del Reys novel is the story of one human, Captain Duke ONeill, who is tired of seeing his planet refusing to rescue alien civilizations that need its help. When hes recruited for a higher position, he learns the real reason why Earth is such a neutral planet.

Del Reys intergalactic parable on interventionism comes from the "Golden Age" of science fiction and is full of vividly imagined alien races. Ran Alan Ricard delivers a tensely voiced performance with distinct voices for these alien characters.

Members Reviews:

one of the best

Lester del Rey is one of the best sci-fi writers and this little gem of a novel is a good example of his work.

Involving, exciting and with a not so subtle message about the price of victory. Reader was excellent as well.

Title: The Invisible Man

Author: H. G. Wells

Narrator: Gerald Harper

Format: Abridged

Length: 1 hr and 2 mins

Language: English

Release date: 06-04-09

Publisher: Audio Holdings, LLC

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Classic

Publisher's Summary:

Griffin is a scientist who theorizes that if a person's refractive index is changed to exactly that of air, and his body does not absorb or reflect light, then he will be invisible. He successfully carries out this procedure on himself, but cannot become visible again, becoming mentally unstable as a result.

Editorial Reviews:

The works of H. G. Wells lend themselves perfectly to audio, the pacing, cinematic description, and escalating drama making for a gripping experience. Here his classic work of sci-fi is performed by stage and screen actor Gerald Harper. Harper excels as Griffin, the egomaniacal doctor who, as his own test subject, proves his theories correct and makes himself invisible but is unable to reverse the process. Harper begins the audiobook with an even-keeled and mild-mannered delivery, his clear diction flourishing, but as the plot progresses the pacing speeds, and he becomes more manic as Griffin loses touch with reality. This is a treat for fans of the classic tale or anyone looking for a work that remains as thrilling today as when it was written at the end of the 19th century.
