Not bad. but that's about it.
Not a bad story, but certainly the weakest of the trilogy. a little convoluted near the middle and end. just nit as compelling as the previous books.
    New narrator
It was a bit disappointing (initially) that the same narrator wasn't used, but I quickly became accustomed to him. He did a fine job.

To solve the case, Police Chief Al Bates must depend on an unlikely ally, cashiered Navy officer Bobbie Lacey, the only sapient on planet who knows what goes on in the ghettos and underworlds of Polar City.
    Editorial Reviews:
James Patrick Cronin gives a straightforward performance of the science fiction novel Polar City Blues by Katharine Kerr. His clear voice is well suited to the descriptive prose. Polar City, which has a seedy underbelly, is the capital of a planet called Hagar. Humans and aliens coexist, but there are politics at play between the Interstellar Confederation and the Coreward Alliance. The conflict ramps up when a Confederation alien is found dead in a public place. Enter police chief Al Bates, who must race to solve the case with the help of navy officer Bobbie Lacey.

    Gritty detective tale with aliens
Polar City Blues by Katherine Kerr is an ambitious attempt to render the traditional "film noir" detective tale in a sci-fi format. Basically, the planet where the actions takes place lies at the juncture of Earth limits alongside two alien races. Earth is clearly the weakest of the group and the frontier / inner city environs is coupled with an understaffed and under-resourced Earth infrastructure. The murder of a diplomatically tied alien launches the tale and the local police chief (Bates) along with a street wise ex-military lady (Lacey) gradually piece together the clues while trying to prevent galactic warfare.
The sci-fi elements are limited to aliens along with flying cars, extra-terrestrial bacteria, and certain individuals with psionic abilities. There's a bit of romance and unrequited love thrown in for good measure. Sadly, Bates who manages to deftly handle alien interactions and eventually saves the day, receives minimal attention throughout the story resulting in a lack of character identification. The attempt to parallel the characters and situations to a traditional earth-side tales is overdone and the baseball fascination seems a bit too much.
The narration is passable, but the various voices lack clear definition.

    Great thriler!
Would you consider the audio edition of Colony Z to be better than the print version?
Great find! Amazing narration and performance! Not your typical zombie story, the action is there, but the build up and back story is amazing!
What other book might you compare Colony Z to and why?
    Perhaps World War Z.
What about Scifi Publishing and Liam Owen s performance did you like?
Wow, you can feel the tension, this guy is so good!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yeah, its one of those stories you don't want to end.
    Any additional comments?
If you love thrillers and suspense, you will love this one!
    Not your typical zombie story
Would you listen to Colony Z again? Why?
Yes, I thought the narration and the story were excellent. Great build up and pace.
What did you like best about this story?
    The ending was excllent
Have you listened to any of Scifi Publishing and Liam Owen s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, Liam is great, really enjoyed him in Forging Zero
    Didn't get far.
I had to stop this in the 3rd chapter. I'm not a fan of the writing style. The characters came off as overly whiney and the dialog wasn't even close to feeling natural.

    Disappointment
I was right, darn it! This volume really bogged down. Time and again, just as I'd get interested in one of the main characters, he would disappear. They blended into each other so much that I was constantly having to back up a few pages to remember who was on stage now. As to the ending (spoiler alert!), the author seemed to be saying, "Oh heck, this is boring even to me. I quit."
Just to be fair, I'll wait maybe as long as a week and look through it again. If the disappointment is my own fault, I'll change this review.
    Interesting book
Nice book;needs a little more family depth, and action. I can be able to do it all in all of the
    good yarn

Force multipliers in the form of state sponsored and radical terrorist acts, cyber warfare and the release of a militarized virulent strain of Smallpox accompany the attacks on the western world as the global economy and environment begin their death throes. Can you prep to survive Armageddon; or is the final destiny of man already being written to conclusion?

    Nuclear EMP Catasrophe
Would you consider the audio edition of A Preppers Perspective to be better than the print version?
I think so, I have no problem with Ron`s editing but I heard some people do. The audio version has no mistakes and I enjoy a good narrated story. Having read the book and then listening to it gave me to great experiences.
What did you like best about this story?
Its realism, its not some lame shootum up like so many of the other prepper fiction or survivalist author genre. It also has lots of survival tips and tricks.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I liked the shelter building, neat concept and resourceful
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I actually listened to the individual stories first because I like the bite size pieces. The smaller stories are more fun for me but since my brother likes long books I added this one to my library

  • Mask of the Other Audiobook by Greg Stolze

    Title: Mask of the Other
    Author: Greg Stolze
    Narrator: Trevor Dutton
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 43 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-30-13
    Publisher: Greg Stolze
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 12 votes
    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
In 1974, something came out of the sea during the invasion of Cyprus, killing Greeks and Turks indiscriminately until it was bombed into dormancy and entombed.
In 1988 a rock band disappeared while filming on an abandoned island-town off the coast of Japan.
In 1991, a squad of US infantry was attacked in Iraq by a bulletproof, invisible entity.
Mask of the Other connects these disparate events, as a group of soldiers plunders the remnants of Saddam's occult weapons program and attempts to engage with creatures of an inhuman mythos...as equals.
It does not go well for them.
    Members Reviews:
    Very creepy Lovecraftian story
A very intriguing Lovecraftian thriller from an author of the Delta Green books. It is very good, though the narrator is only mediocre.
Interesting story too bad about the narrator
I bought this book because I really enjoy Greg Stolze's work and the premise had me interested. It took less than an hour for the narrator to drive me out of my gourd. He sounds bored. Bored and sarcastic. I think I'll get the book and read it. Audio books are my preferred medium but this is too muck
An interesting modern take on the Cthulhu Mythos
Greg Stolze's Mask of the Other tells its story by frequently jumping back and forth in its roughly 25 year timeline. This was slightly confusing in the beginning, but I came to appreciate it as the different plots converged on the novel's present day outcome.
This is certainly not high literature, but a fast-paced, action-packed modern spin on the Cthulhu Mythos with compelling characters, an interesting (if not exactly new) premise. The narration is decent and doesn't detract from the novel's strength, but nothing to write home about.
If you're looking for fun genre reading that does not offend your intellect, pick this up.

  • ARkstorm Audiobook by Ron Foster

    Title: ARkstorm
Subtitle: The Ones That Made It
    Author: Ron Foster
    Narrator: Phil Williams
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 8 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-18-13
    Publisher: PAL Productions
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 9 votes
    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The ARkStorm (for Atmospheric River 1000 Storm) has brought a devastating flood of biblical proportions to California forcing millions of people to evacuate. For the preppers attending PrepperStock this year, the troubles brought about by this disaster have just begun as the economy begins a slow collapse and acts of terrorism threaten America's survival.
Our story follows several preppers and family members through daily life leading into the beginning of the ARkStorm and grid failures. Refugee camps are filling up with millions of evacuees who remained at shelters and were not lucky enough to bunk in with friends or relatives and try and start over again. The end of a functioning U.S. economy is compounded by mysterious grid failures nationwide.
The ARkStorm series is patterned after the 1861-62 historical events that flooded the central valley of California. The scientifically realistic 'superstorm' scenario developed and published by the United States Geological Survey has been adapted as a story line that includes the author's modern day applications of emergency management principles with a prepper community slant. Keep your feet and your powder dry folks!
    Members Reviews:
    Yet another good one.
Ron thanks for the valuable information you share. I have learned so much from your books.
    California's other big one
Now this was a interesting disaster fiction read and listen. I had never even heard of an ARkStorm until this author presented it. It is quite a scary thought this catastrophe is predicted scientifically to happen in my lifetime, like I didn't have enough to worry about already after reading Ron`s other books! Phil narrated this one well and it was a good listen. I look forward to more from both of these great storytellers.
Don't waste your credits on this one! Terrible
I never write anything negative but on this one, I just could not find anything good about it and hate that I paid to hear it. The narrator's voice is mechanical and it was painful to listen to, as well as the story being so fragmented with explanations of the how to or political views that it totally made it impossible to feel the characters in the book and ruined whatever the story part of this book could have been. I love to know how to with prepping but to in such a way that it destroys the book I have paid my hard earned money to enjoy. I feel cheated out of my money and my book credit. :(

    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
This is the first in a series of stand-alone, interconnected short stories for preppers. In this particular installment, a prepper survives a nuclear electromagnetic pulse (EMP), which has devastated the electrical grid. Cars and trucks can still move in most parts of America, but they can't get any gas. The threat of bioterrorism looms as the U.S. and its allies go to war and our technology-dependent society is stopped dead in its tracks. Martial law and global famine have begun. Can the characters survive? Could you? Where does this post-apocalyptic tale go from here?
This audiobook is told from the perspective of a prepper thinking about how he is going to deal with the current post-apocalyptic situation and the disintegration of society.
    Members Reviews:
A dull book that should be a manual
This book is a quite dull narrative. It is filled with dull conversation about the different ways various prepper tools and supplies might be used, and very little action. It should be rewritten as a manual. It includes commercials for the author's favorite products, including color photos. The last pages of the book are complete details on how to buy them.
There are also tons of editing errors. I sometimes had to pause to decipher what he meant to say.
There are good recommendations on products and strategies for prepping. But this author doesn't have the skill to spin an interesting story.
    great book
I love all Ron's books, the characters are are detailed, and his knowledge, and tips are real world things that you can use.
    Cookbook?
Lotta pages dedicated to dutch oven cooking, especially considering the small amount of pages per pamphlet.
And Ron, please, work on your dialogue a little more. It was good to see a few contractions this time, vol 1 was unlike any spoken word I've ever heard uttered by native born Americans.
    Terrible writing and editing, disappointed!
Be ready, this is a harsh negative review and not my usual style. I read his previous series Prepped Road March and enjoyed them so thought I couldn't go wrong wit this new works. I was wrong. Usually an author gets better with more and more experience. I would question if this is even the same writer and if not, which is the real Ron Foster?? In the first two chapters the main contractor's name changed 3 times. (Dennis, Doug, David..). That is just one example of unacceptable writing errors.I won't even get started on the storyline, writing style and grammar. So disappointed and I regret buying both publications before I read the first, thinking they would at least the same quality as his previous works I've read. I won't waste my time reading the rest.
    Hmmmm
Would have been better if he could remember his characters names. Called Dennis Donald but the way he did it was confusing because took a minute to realize who he was talking about. But then several times he forgat others names. Needs a better proof reader and editor.
