Genres: Arts & Entertainment, TV & Film
    Publisher's Summary:
In the summer of 1970, legendary but self-destructive director Orson Welles returned to Hollywood from years of self-imposed exile in Europe and decided it was time to make a comeback movie. It was about a legendary self-destructive director who returns to Hollywood from years of self-imposed exile in Europe. Welles swore it wasn't autobiographical.
The Other Side of the Wind was supposed to take place during a single day, and Welles planned to shoot it in eight weeks. It took 12 years and remains unreleased and largely unseen.
Orson Welles's Last Movie by Josh Karp is a fast-paced, behind-the-scenes account of the bizarre, hilarious, and remarkable making of what has been called "the greatest home movie that no one has ever seen". Funded by the shah of Iran's brother-in-law and based on a script that Welles rewrote every night for years, it was a final attempt to one-up his own best work. It's almost impossible to tell if art is imitating life or vice versa in the film. It's a production best encompassed by its star, John Huston, who described the making of the film as "an adventure shared by desperate men that finally came to nothing".

    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 38 votes
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, TV & Film
    Publisher's Summary:
Horror films have simultaneously captivated and terrified audiences for generations, racking up billions of dollars at the box office and infusing our nightmares with unrelenting zombies, chainsaw-wielding madmen, and myriad incarnations of ghosts, ghouls, and the devil himself. Despite evolving modes of storytelling and the fluctuating popularity of other genres, horror endures.
The Horror of It All is a memoir from the front lines of the industry that dissects (and occasionally defends) the hugely popular phenomenon of scary movies. Author Adam Rockoff traces the highs and lows of the horror genre through the lens of his own obsessive fandom, born in the aisles of his local video store and nurtured with a steady diet of cable trash.
From Siskel and Ebert's crusade against slasher films to horror's renaissance in the wake of Scream, Rockoff mines the rich history of the genre, braiding critical analysis with his own firsthand experiences. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
    Critic Reviews:

Great book, if you were a teen in the 80's
I did really enjoy this book. As someone who was a tween during slasher golden age, I could really relate to the stories in this book. I have seen most of the films, or will now see them. I enjoyed reliving that part of my life and enjoyed listening to someone else talk about horror.
On the downside, he does sometimes go off subject. For instance, there is a whole chapter about the PMRC and the congress hearing regarding music censorship. And sometimes he can be a little pretentious.
Overall, if you love horror movies, especially ones made in the 80's, you will enjoy this book.
a great love letter to horror
i have had similar experiences in Chicago in my youth loving horror. this book was great. i had misgivings as it started but they swiftly disappeared.
A whole lot of fun for horror diehards!
Rockoff is well informed, amusing and interesting, even when he's wrong about Halloween or pumping up some goofy misbegotten piece of horror cinema from the early eighties. I like the way he looks at different horror films in unusual ways, and seeing where he starts his analysis to when his intended point reaches full circle is a great amount of fun. He is definitely one of us, a horror fan through and through, and his love and passion for his favorite horror movies comes through in every stage of the book, culminating in a brilliant final chapter that will leave you feeling happy to be a horror fan yourself.
RC Bray reads this brilliantly, with emphasis in all the right places. All in all, this is just a super book. I listened to it while walking my dog over a series of a couple weeks. :)
    this is a fun read
I loved this book. That said I don't know if would be a good listen for someone who doesn't know horror.
I didn't always agree with the author, but his points were made well and really we don't all have to agree about any creative endeavor.
    I would avoid this one
I struggled with this one, I enjoy the history of the genre but this was full of pointless opinions and pompous ramblings. Avoid

    Publisher's Summary:
On March 2, 1965, The Sound of Music was released in the United States, and the love affair between moviegoers and the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical was on. Rarely has a film captured the love and imagination of the moviegoing public in the way that The Sound of Music did as it blended history, music, Austrian location filming, heartfelt emotion, and the yodeling of Julie Andrews into a monster hit.
Now Tom Santopietro has written the ultimate Sound of Music fan audiobook with all the inside dope, from behind-the-scenes stories of the filming in Austria and Hollywood to new interviews with Johannes von Trapp and others. Santopietro looks back at the real-life story of Maria von Trapp, goes on to chronicle the sensational success of the Broadway musical, and recounts the story of the near cancellation of the film when Cleopatra bankrupted 20th Century Fox.

    A must for super-fans
If you are a super-fan of the movie and want to know every little detail about every little thing, then this is the book for you!
It held my interest, I enjoyed it, but I didnt really feel like I came away with many new scoops. There have been so many reunion shows and TV interviews and documentaries over the years that I feel there are no more secrets left to uncover! Despite that, I was surprised to learn how much the movie was panned by the critics of the day.
I agree with other reviewers that the biographies of everyone at the end was a little long, but overall still interesting.
If you love the Sound of Music
The Sound of Music Movie will always have a special place in my heart. After watching a stage performance that came to our city, I went searching for something more and found this book. It is truly a great companion to the movie and stage production. I highly recommend it if you want to find all the ins and outs of the movie.

Title: Mr Dodge, Mr Hitchcock, and the French Riviera
Subtitle: The Story Behind To Catch a Thief
    Author: Jean Buchanan
    Narrator: Robin Bloodworth
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 23 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-07-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, TV & Film
    Publisher's Summary:
Jewel thievery, car chases, and romance on the French Riviera. Alfred Hitchcock's Oscar-winning film To Catch a Thief brought together Hollywood's two most glamorous stars, Grace Kelly and Cary Grant, in the most glamorous place on Earth, the French Riviera. It is a tale of jewel thievery, intrigue, false identity, covert investigation, and, most of all, romance.
Kelly and Grant strike sparks off each other to a backdrop of sophisticated living and glorious scenery. This iconic and much-loved film was based on a novel by the American thriller and travel writer David Dodge. He took his inspiration from real-life events in the South of France, when he was briefly suspected of being a daring cat burglar and lifting jewelery worth $250,000 from the palatial establishment next door to his small rented villa. Once the real thief was behind bars, Dodge wrote at breakneck speed. Alfred Hitchcock snapped up the film rights before publication, visualizing his two favorite stars in the lead roles. Hitchcock worked with his screenwriter, John Michael Hayes, to produce the film script that would take Hollywood's finest to the South of France.
Mr Dodge, Mr Hitchcock, and the French Riviera tells the true story of the events behind the novel and the film To Catch a Thief.
    Members Reviews:
    Five Stars
Great short story, fast paced & a compelling read.
Interesting Story of An Interesting Man - Loses Focus When Hitchcock Shows Up
David Dodge seemed like the kind of man who lived his life well. He had a wandering spirit which kept him untethered from society and possessions so he could turn his passion for world travel into a lifestyle. He married a woman who was much like himself and together they determined that they were going to live in the paradise of the French Riviera among millionaires. Somehow they were going to survive on his income as a writer.
They found a little rental place with a magnificent view and settled there following the budget minded upwardly mobile maxim of finding the worst house on the best street. It was here he wroteTo Catch A Thief. It is the story of a cat burglar out to prove his innocence in the Cote d'Azure. Alfred Hitchcock bought the rights to the film and made the same French Riviera location the obvious choice for working with Cary Grant & Grace Kelly.
The very short book primarily focuses on David Dodge until the movie people show up. These moments are the most interesting as Mr. Dodge is an interesting person who we don't know much about. When production begins on the movie, Dodge falls into the background and the narrative starts to drag. All of the details of the making of this movie and the lives of its legendary cast have been explored in much more depth than what is offered here in a fairly pedestrian account of the film's production.

ESPN's rise is one of the most remarkable stories about business and sports in our time, and nobody can tell it better than George Bodenheimer.
It may be hard to believe, but not long ago, getting sports updates was difficult and frustrating. ESPN changed everything.
George Bodenheimer knows. Initially hired to work in the mailroom, one of Bodenheimer's first jobs was to pick up sportscaster Dick Vitale at the Hartford airport and drive him to ESPN's main campus - a couple of trailers in a dirt parking lot. But as ESPN grew, so did George's status in the company. In fact Bodenheimer played a major part in making ESPN a daily presence not just here but all over the world.
In this business leadership memoir - written with best-selling author Donald T. Phillips - Bodenheimer lays out ESPN's meteoric rise. This is an audiobook for business listeners and sports fans alike.

    It's What Every Filmmaker Needs
Would you listen to How to Make and Sell Your Film Online and Survive the Hollywood Implosion While Doing It again? Why?
Of course, the information was solid and current.
What did you like best about this story?
The many areas of topics covered in the book.
What does Scott McMahon bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    Passion and knowledge.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, I would use this book as a follow along reference.
    Any additional comments?
If you want to get an advantage on your filmmaking without going broke, this book is for you.
A humble but thorough guide to the subject
This book more than met my expectations.
I got a free audio copy, as well as a free e-book version (all formats), but I still paid for this audible version.
    Yes, it's that good!
I have also paid Scott individually for his time as a consultant. He's upfront in that he says "I don't know everything", yet what he does know and when he shares with us is really Gold if we I choose to use it.
He reads this very well, and I say that as a true are you look at it. It's an engaging and interesting performance and content.
If you are interested in independent filmmaking and/or entrepreneurship, this book is highly recommended. Very highly. I give it my highest recommendation possible.
I am already on my second listening on this one very rare for me and I just gotten a book. Even when a book has a lot of relistenability, for me, I usually get it at least a few weeks if not months before the next listening. For this one I'm going to listen to it at least twice all the way through within the first 24 hours.
And again: yes it is that good!
    Motivational but not much information
He seems like a pleasant guy. Nice voice. Positive attitude.
And its true that there are opportunities to make and market an micro low budget film outside the studio system. But where is the I formation.
Its like listening to a high school cheerleaders sing you can do it. You can do it. You can do, do,
    Do it.
    Pleasant. But wheres the content.
Qualification: I only listened to the first two chapters. Maybe theres more as it goes on. But how long do we have to wait?
    Entertaining and informative
Scott provides valuable information on Internet marketing for the beginner filmmaker. His writing style is entertaining.

Super great and timely info for Outlander fiends!
Tons and tons of really interesting, relevant and juicy background information regarding both the outlander books, and the new TV series. The narration is okay, though she says a few things really bizarrely I have no idea where she gets her pronunciation of the word Beltane. Never heard it sound like that in my life. But it's bearable and the information is completely worth it. It was just the extra material that I was looking for while currently being engrossed in the series, after having read all the books. If you're an outlander geek, you'll really enjoy this.
    Spoiler Alert!
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Too soon to say. I stumbled into it far too early and had to cut my listening short as I have only completed the first 3 books in the Outlander series and did not want spoilers. I am writing this review now, however, because such a review would have saved me the trouble. I plan to resume listening once I've finished the first 8 Outlander books.
Would you recommend History, Homages and the Highlands to your friends? Why or why not?
Only if they are up to date with the Outlander series through book 8.
Would you be willing to try another one of Fiona Thrailles performances?
Possibly, if it were a novel and not non-fiction. When quoting lines from the series her characterizations are strong, but the analytical content comes across very dry.
    Any additional comments?
Includes references to books all the way through "Written in My Own Heart's Blood" (book 8) as well as the first series of the TV show.
Informative but difficult to listen to
What disappointed you about History, Homages and the Highlands?
The narrator did not help the content. It was very hard to listen to.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Fiona Thraille?
Porter, her voice is linked with the novels
    Loved this
Loved this. Very informative and concise. Love this show. Also gives great insight into the history for the backdrop of the show
Great insight to the Outlander books
I loved this book, it helped to explain the Outlander books. It was packed full of interesting facts to tie the series together . I planning to buy the hard copy so I can use it for future reference. A must read for Outlander lovers.

    Title: Girl of My Dreams
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Peter Davis
    Narrator: P. J. Ochlan
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 20 hrs and 40 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-31-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, TV & Film
    Publisher's Summary:
A sweeping novel of Hollywood in the 1930s, Girl of My Dreams captures the essence of the Golden Age, when Hollywood became the global fantasy capital it remains today.
Screenwriter: The protagonist, Owen Jant, is a young screenwriter who comes of age in the 1930s at the intersection of Hollywood, the Depression, and the heyday of the Communist Party. At every turn, he is finding, and losing, his way.
Hollywood star: The glamorous Palmyra Millevoix - complex, gifted, mysterious - is a star more agitated than pleased by her fame. She could have been Grushenka, siren of the Karamazov saga, if she had not been a Hollywood star.
Studio mogul: Founder of Jubilee Pictures, Mossy Zangwill is not the last tycoon but the last of the old-style chieftains and first of the corporate moderns, clawing his way from a fatherless home in the Bronx to become by his mid-30s a rival to the Warners and Mayers, reigning kings of Hollywood. He would resemble Gatsby if Gatsby had gone west.
Propelled by the suicide of an innocent victim of studio politics, Owen falls in wacky, unpromising love with Palmyra, who in turn is relentlessly pursued by Mossy, the autocratic studio head. The drawing and redrawing of the triangle between screenwriter, star, and tycoon - intense, devious, seductive, combative - frames the education of Owen Jant. The story has an epic sweep that encompasses the swagger and flash of 1930s Hollywood and the Great Depression's plunder of the American dream. The cast of characters, like the narrative, is expansive: Clark Gable, Marlene Dietrich, the Prince of Wales, Edward G. Robinson, and the gossip columnists Louella Parsons and Walter Winchell all show up. So do murder, riot, sex, conspiracy, and deception.
In the shocking climax to Girl of My Dreams, Owen Jant himself, not without paying a high price, at last climbs the ladder to maturity. In part, Girl of My Dreams is lurid, juicy, and scandal driven.
    Members Reviews:
    Dazzling
A pyrotechnical burst of incident, blown away dazzlingly, the stuff of a hundred novels. Verbally dazzling too, this witty book deserved more attention. A few lagging themes and some unnecessary sex scenes do not really mar it. Wonderful studio head character and wonderful recreation of hollywood and the 'thirties.
Tinseltown and Shantytown - A riveting novel about Hollywood during the Depression
This engrossing page-turner pulls no punches when it comes to exposing the dark side of Hollywoodâs so-called Golden Age at the height of the Depression in the â30âs. Glamour and celebrity contrast with the greed, abuse, hypocrisy and exploitation inherent in the studio system, as naive but talented screenwriter Owen Jant and beautiful, idealistic leading lady Palmyra Millevoix (and real stars of the era) cross paths at Jubilee Pictures, run by the ruthless Amos ("Mossy") Zangwill. One of the many unforgettable, film-worthy scenes is the mayhem that follows the sham, arranged marriage of a gay leading man to a lesbian actress. Another is the âParty party,â hosted by a convert to the Cause, at which Communist operatives tap new members while oysters and canapes are served on silver trays. A must-read!
    A great read
Girl of My Dreams is a luscious read - part Raymond Chandler, part David McCullough.
