A smashing good time!

I wasn't sure how I felt about Turnip being the hero of his own story. Turns out, I absolutely adored him! He sort of bumbles and fumbles about, but he is so genuinely caring that one does not care. Arabella was a perfect match for him, overlooking his faults and accepting Turnip as is. In turn, Turnip overlooks status and class and loves Arabella for the spunky yet pragmatic woman she is.

Kate Reading is, as always, a fabulous narrator, easily transporting us to the time and place. We also get a visit from none other than Jane Austen herself, who is unassuming and witty. Eloise and Collin do not make an appearance in this story, due to the fact that it takes place between Crimson Rose and Night Jasmine. I missed them, but completely understand their absence. Mistletoe is a fantastic addition to the Pink Carnation series and a must read for any fan!

(My only complaint would be to the producers of the audiobook and not the book itself. A bit of the music from the beginning is inserted absolutely randomly throughout the book. I could almost understand if it happened only once or in between scene changes. But it happened at least half a dozen times and in completely bizarre places. One would think that a producer or editor would have noticed that.)

Wonderful fun!

This Christmas offering from the lovely and gracious Lauren Willig, is fabulous fun. Funny, suspenseful and romantic - all wrapped up in one. The icing on the cake is that it is narrated by the marvelous Kate Reading. I could not have asked for a more delicious way to spend my holiday leisure hours.

Great historical account but diabolical in value

What did you like best about Devils Dream? What did you like least?

The account and narrative gives one a tremendous insight into the nature of life, conditions, and poverty during the period. I loved the way it is narrated. I believe it is realistic in word and dialogue the way people actually talked in West Tennessee, Mississippi valley.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The author jumps around too much chronologically. One chapter you are in 1864 and the next 1858. Hard to follow all the individuals names and relationships.

What about Scott Sowerss performance did you like?

Excellent rendering of the worded book narrative. The reflection and accent appeared to be accurate

Was Devils Dream worth the listening time?

Sort of !! Sometimes I wished I would have just put it down and forgot it. The image of a schizophrenic, demon possessed individual jumps out when Forrest loses control upset me. He walked a fine line between a Hitler and a Robert E. Lee. Only two individuals have any control over him when he has become possessed. His wife and his mother.

Leonard + Guidall = great listening

Cuba Libre is the prequel to Hot Kid and Up in Ruby's Room. It seems that Mr. Leonard has added more history than usual in this book and it's great. Guidall's narration is perfection.

However, I have to say between this book and the last few I've listened to, I have learned more about torture methods than I ever wanted to know.

Fun Listen

What made the experience of listening to Cuba Libre the most enjoyable?

I went to Cuba (legally) a decade + ago. It certainly sounded the same as in this book. No campesinos per se and no people in white peasant garb. Poor none the less. This book is a great prelude to what happened many years before Castro. Having been to the island this was especially fun.

Who was the most memorable character of Cuba Libre and why?

Raleigh - the classic capitalist bad guy. Most suitable for a book set in Cuba. Too bad Castro turned out to be far worse.

Good Story

I loved this book. I like when an author takes historical fact (as well as people) and can write a good story around it (think Philippa Gregory novels). There really was a Alice Perrers and it was believed she was the King's mistress. It kept my interest, the narration was superb, the story compelling. I highly recommend this one!

This book is a wonderful read! I enjoy historical books that are not dull and academic in it's telling and this one is just the one!! It keeps your interest and makes you want to listen more! I could not commute to work as I do without good books like this one!

No, it's not shockingly unique among it's genre. Yes, it was entertaining. Quite frankly, Donada's voice is a gem and she can make anything come alive. This is a tale about a young girl who feels used by the crown in an ancestral way...Wealth is displayed. Plague mentioned. It's all in period costume. What more do you want really.

Timeless classic, disastrous narrator choice

Paul Scott's Raj Quartet series is a timeless classic about the British rule in India and its ignominious end. I enjoyed listening to the first volume so much that I bought the second without listening to a sample. Big mistake.

I have experienced my share of poor narrators on Audible but never ever anything as bad as this. The problem is not the narrator's ability but his voice, and the emotion it conveys. No matter what the narrator is saying, he always sounds snotty, arrogant and condescending. Even the most simple, factual sentences sound like scathing insults. What is even worse for this book is the fact that this narrator's voice is the epitome of everything that Paul Scott criticizes about the British rule in India. It is the voice of the narrow-minded, pig-headed, racist British upper class who despise everything and everyone that does not belong to their tiny elite club. It is the exact opposite of everything for which Paul Scott's wonderful work stands and speaks out. It is like having a production of the Diary of Anne Frank narrated by the voice of a German World War II radio newscaster.

Choosing Richard Brown to narrate this book is probably the most egregiously inappropriate decision in the entire history of audio book publishing. He manages to completely destroy it and its message.

It gets better!

Richard Brown's narration took some getting used to, I have been so taken with Sam Dastor"s rendition of Jewel in the Crown. However, I'm very glad to have persevered because this book gets better and better. It's not just a story, but also an insight into the latter days of the British Raj. This book is well worth listening to. Now onto #3.

Enthralling story of the British Raj in India

What made the experience of listening to The Day of the Scorpion the most enjoyable?

While I love all four volumes of The Raj Quartet, the introduction of the Layton's in this second volume adds enormously to the breadth and depth of the saga. Paul Scott's writing is exquisite and Richard Brown brings it to life...I truly feel in the midst of the story as I listen.

Who was your favorite character and why?

In particular I find Sarah Leyton to be one of the most compelling figures of English literature. She is uncomfortable with the aristoratic role of her family and the British ruling class and questions the role of Britain in India, just as the life of the British Raj is winding down. She is ever bit as thoughtful as Daphne Manners in the first volume (The Jewel in the Crown), but elects to be more conventional at times.

Interesting

Turtledove attempts to deliver again and thus far in this tread he seems to be doing so. He attacks the question: what if WWII started a bit earlier, with the Allies declaring war instead of handing over Czechoslovakia? Thus far, much of the gist of WWII seems to be following as it did in our history, but several events are developing that allude to some interesting turns. The ending is a cliffhanger. This book has the feel of another great Turtledove saga, and those can often go on for 7 or more books, so beware before getting too deeply into this.

Good Book, really poor narration ruins it

Turtledove really stimulates the "what if" part of your brain with his alternate history. But the reader just murders it. I got through it because of the author's good writing and character development, but it would have been so much better read by say Scott Brick or about any other reader. I think it's still worth getting, but with this reader, Audible should cut the price.

Story protracted,reader hasn't a clue

I have enjoyed Harry Turtledove's books for many years and was surprised at the ending - or should I say non-ending. It just kind of stops right in the middle of the story. This brings me to hope for a sequel, maybe? The reader just sucks. All the European accents(French, German, Spanish, Eastern European and Russian) seem identical.

I had anticipated this book and even requested it from audible before it was released in the US. I really wanted to love this book but I just couldn't connect with the story. Fairy tale in flavor and tone. It wanders over hill and dale using beautifully written prose but to me just never got to the point. A disappointment in that no matter how many times I try to finish it-- I just can't seem to do it.

A Work of True Genius

The Children's Book is a collection of fantasies--not just Olive Wellwood's evolving children's stories and Stern's marionette shows, but the fantasies lived out by the adults in the decades leading up to the first World War. The expos? of these fantasies is at the heart of the novel. Olive and Humphrey believe in the fantasy of free love: that it causes no jealousy between spouses, nor that it damages any of the seven children in their household, born from various liaisons yet raised to believe they are true siblings. Love, sad to say, does not conquer all, and some in the novel who give it too freely pay a heavy price. Another fantasy: that freedom allows children to grow up happy and full of potential; but freedom taken too far borders upon neglect, and not all children are by nature independent. Another set of fantasies: that art can change the course of world events, and that genius is always to be indulged for its own sake. The list goes on and on. Like the characters' fantasy lives, Olive Wellwood's stories are delightfully magical on the surface yet dark and dangerous underneath.

The novel's style and structure are inseparable, both building on the possibilities and threats in the space between fantasy and reality, between the Victorian age and the new post-world war period. Some readers have complained about excessive details in the first part of the novel; others complain about the brevity of the last.

I love this original story, wonderful fiction peppered with breathtaking historical details and takes you on a journey to a fascinating past world-Renaissance Italy.

Interesting story about a woman (Da Vinci's mother) perseverance in a society where women had few choices and very little power. Yes, there is romance, but it is an integral part of a woman's life, particularly in a time when it was almost impossible to survive without a man at her side- so in my opinion it is appropriate to the story.

Narration was good, and I couldn't stop listening!

No, I wouldn't recommend it. Although it had some very interesting parts about DaVinci and the history of Florence, it degenerated into a "B" romance story very quickly.

She did a good job at different character voices and at presenting emotional inflections at appropriate times.

Too much Harlequin Romance

I expected a historical novel and felt like I got a romance novel set in the 1400s. I do like Jane Austen and the historical mystery romances by Tasha Alexander, so I'm not anti-romance. But, I did not like Signora da Vinci and only listened to about 1/4. I wanted to like it. I planned to listen to it while flying to Italy this summer and it seemed perfect:, but I just couldn't finish it. The author seemed to have done her research and the premise was interesting, but it came across as fluffy and breathless- perhaps my opinion was negatively influenced by the narrator's style...

Fascinating and cant stop listening

Found this book very interesting and entertaining. This is one I may listen to again.

amazing book

love the book love the detail of the characters I think it's a great adaption it for a prequel to Treasure Island.

What a surprise!

Would you consider the audio edition of Flint & Silver to be better than the print version?

Having only watched the movie version of Treasure Island, I didn't really know why I bought this audiobook but it was a real dilight from start to finish. It was a good story which seemed to follow (or preceed) what I remembered from the movie so it made me buy the original Treasure Island audiobook.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Long John Silver I remembered as a villian, but in this book he was not only a victim, but a genuine hero.

What does Tim Gregory bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

The reading was very good by Tim who seemed to be as much into the story as I was.

Who was the most memorable character of Flint & Silver and why?

The author advised that, although Treasure Island was a children's book, Flint and Silver (and the subsequent books) are aimed at adults.

Any additional comments?

I cant wait for the 2 sequels (but still prequels to Treasure Island?) to come out on audiobook. Bring It On!

Fantastic Read!

This story was a wonderful blend of accurate seamanship and thrilling suspense, reminiscent of the Aubry-Maturin novels, but with more lively "pizzaz." The narrative tool of Treasure Island, with its cast of characters already known to us, only served to enrich the experience, made all the more rewarding because of the Author's rich development of those same characters. I highly recommend this, and eagerly anticipate Pieces of Eight

Great job. I am glad that I'm not not the only lubber who had in interest in Captain Flint. I personally would love for John and Tim to include other pirate characters in these books like Jack Rackem, and Ann Bonny and Mary Reed, not forgetting Ned low, and Edward Teach.

A Well-Crafted, Satisfying End to a Great Series

Thus epic and brilliant trilogy deserves a spot on the shelf of anyone who values contemporary literature that is actually worth reading. Tuck, the third and final entry of this unique take on the legend of Robin Hood, delivers an end betting the quality the first two demonstrated. The reader was also a pleasure to hear.

Great story and VERY well read.

This is a captivating story and the reader does an amazing job of using many different voices and not mixing them up. It is thoroughly entertaining and uplifting. You have to listen to the entire trilogy - it is great.

Great finale

Great into the trilogy. Narrative was slightly slowed down in the previous two books. Much better.

Tuck

The performance threw me off because the pronunciations of certain people and places were different from the previous two audiobooks. If I hadn't been reading along with an actual book, who knows how long it would have taken me to catch on. Also, the plot had a passing issue. it was very slow for the longest while, and then had a very fun but very speedy rap up. Still, the final book was very satisfying!
