He captures, too, the camaraderie of this "band of brothers" as they perform the acts of courage and cunning crucial to the Allies' victory in North Africa. Killing Rommel
I have never read/listened to this author. I decided to give it a try and would like to say it was an excellent book. I enjoyed it and would recommend it if you like WWII action type of stories. I thought the ending was super.
Humble Hero
"Killing Rommel" presents a straightforward personal account of one limited-scale special operations campaign in North Africa during WWII, written in the style of a memoir. Mr. Pressfield presents the unassuming courage and emotional conflicts of one man in a way that enlightens without seeming overbearing. He also portrays perfectly the true randomness of armed conflict. The pacing was just right and the Kiwi, British and German characters were believable. This is a great listen if you are looking for inspiration in the face of trying circumstances.
"Jolly Good!"
The first half was devoted to the heavy lifting of 'stage setting' and character introduction. For me, the Period, the language and social structure of British society was facinating. And the writing and story telling were brilliant so I loved it.
Because the story was so well researched, with scrupulous attention to detail, by the second half when the action starts, it is riviting. The battle scenes were dramatic and graphic without being gratuetous, and always with an overarching pathos that gives this book its heart.
I've enjoyed re-listening to this book several times, picking up nuances missed in prior listenings.
If you like great writing and a compelling story - give this a tumble. If you like great writing, a compelling story, within a WWII war context - it is a must!
Excellent Book, Excellent Reading
An amazing story. I thoroughly enjoyed this Audiobook. For anyone who loves historical fiction, this is excellent. There are not only the rich details of life in the WWII North Africa Campaign, but profound messages about maintaining your humanity in the midst of war. The audiobook reading is also excellent and lends a dimension to the story you might not get from reading the book.
Terrific fictional and real life characters
Pressfield does it again. he is the best author of military stories. This was an intriguing story of real life characters knit together flawlessly with fictional ones to create a great story of adventure and comradery.
