Excellent Prologue, not short story

I guess the book for this prologue has not been published yet. It was great and I really want to read the series now. It was very intelligent, lots of funny parts and fun.

I fail to see though how it is considered a short story. There really didn't seem to be much of a plot, yet it is up for a Hugo?

I got this for free, so I have no complaints, but I can not see why you would spend money on it, since it is really not a complete story.

It looks like Sclazi is going to Master the Fantasy market as well as he has mastered the Science Fiction Market.

Narrator and production are excellent.

As much as I love John Sclazi, I would say what till the book comes out, surely this will be part of the book.

Wish I'd Read the Reviews

I paid for this "short story." My own fault, I guess, because if you don't pay attention, you will pay a price, but this is an all too brief 21 minute of introduction. It should be offered as a free teaser to the actual STORY, otherwise, it's a rip-off. I've already taken responsibility for not being more observant, but were I casting blame, I'm not sure who to point a finger at for not making it clear that this is not a $3.95 story, but rather a $3.95 (or 1 valuable credit) introduction to the story concept. It is, as others have commented, a teaser. I will probably buy the book when it comes out, but for the teaser, I have to cry foul on offering this for a fee.

Wait, what, that's it?

I really like John Scalzi's books, so I got this one. Is it worth $4 or a credit? For 21 minutes, no. I may as well have sought out the text and read it. The narration is good and the story, what little of it that was there, was a fun listen and I wanted more. There is a good wanting more and there is a bad wanting more, this is the bad wanting more, because there isn't.

Not keen on these new chapter things

Disappointed to realize this was another one of those chapter serials. Give me the whole book or dont do any of it. :-/

Great introduction.

I really hope there is more to come. I found John Scalzi by accident when I first joined audible and have continued to love his work at every turn. While this is a short piece of work it is extremely entertaining in its own right. Feels like a tribute by Scalzi to Terry Pratchett.

Interesting romance collection

I'm a big fan of Lynn Kurland & Karen Marie Moning. Their stories are enjoyable, engaging & creative. Narration is great. Perhaps if you're a fan of Sherriyn Kenyon or Madeline Hunter, you will enjoy their stories as well. I did not.

Everything. Not even remotely interesting, and I LOVE a good romance novel.

MONING is one of my favorite authors. Try the Fever series.

I am in LOVE with Phil Gigante's voice. Nothing wrong with the narration here. He reads a few of the fever series books and he is amazing.

Nice collection of short stories

I hadn't heard of the Nate Heller series before listening to this collection of short stories. All of the stories were fact based with the fictional character Nate Heller inserted to solve them. After each story the author gave a little synopsis of his references and a little about the crime and what liberties he had taken. Most of the stories were interesting and I enjoyed the little synopsis after each one.

Husband and I LOVE listening together!

What made the experience of listening to Chicago Lightning the most enjoyable?

The stories are realistic without being gratuitiously violent. The history is there, and the characters bring it to life.

What did you like best about this story?

The fact that the P.I. is the narrator. 1st person really works here.

Which scene was your favorite?

When they are sitting outside the dept. store to see if vandals come by, and they are shot at and the person riding along is shot.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

NOt an extreme reaction, but I liked it. I could easily visualize what was being described.

Sherlockians regard The Casebook with mixed feelings, being the last and probably the least of Conan Doyle's Holmes efforts. David Timson, however, excels in these respectful narrations and more than compensates for the lesser material. He goes beyond voicing words clearly; he savors the language and gives attention to every phrase. The subtle use of music to mark setting changes is also effective. The collection concludes with a bonus story written and read by Timson ("The Wondrous Toy") on Holmes's encounter with the new gramophone and, by implication, the birth of the audiobook era.

Off key

I have all of the Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes storys on my ipod now and I must say that this series of storys is my least favorite. Don't get me wrong, compaired to a lot of books this is still very good but I don't think that Doyle is quiet on the money in this case.

As for the reader, he is good without being anything special. Of note though is the final story on this audiobook. It is not a Conan Doyle story but one written by the narrator, David Timson. It serves as proof that Holmes simpley becomes another boring detective if anyone but Doyle writes him. The story is flat and lifeless and contradicts several things that Doyle has said about Holmes in his own storys. It is badly written and badly researched. It is so bad infact I have nocked a star of my rating.

Over all a good book, apart from the last story, and the reader is good, but not quite up to the usual standards of Holmes and Watson.

Awful Narration of Wonderful Stories

Listening to Louis L'Amour stories is always time well spent. Unfortunately listening to Christopher Crennen narrate these wonderful stories served as Lenten penance.

As a listener of over 100 Westerns in my audible.com Library I will from now on look for Christopher Crennen as a narrator and avoid those titles. I haven't read one of these collections that has ever disappointed me. This is the same excellent quality. Highly recommended.

Something To Crow About

In the beautiful cover artwork of NEW STORIES FROM THE SOUTH: THE YEAR'S BEST, 2006, Chanticleer is perched on a writing pen. He obviously has something to crow about as this is as fine a collection of stories as you will find anywhere. I was reminded again and again as I read each of them of why we read in the first place. These 20 stories entertain us, they tease us with language used in new ways, they often bridge the gap that separates us all, they give us new insights, they suprise us. One of the writers, William Harrison, says that "stories can sneak up on the reader." Wendell Berry's "Mike" fits that description, one of the two stories included about dogs. If you are not careful, the last sentence will make your eyes burn in spite of yourself.

These 20 stories are as different in subject matter-- building a house, handling snakes, attending a high school ball game, to name three-- as their writers; but they are often similar in their themes. Many of them are about serial failures in relationships but the characters do not lose hope of starting over. Of course they are often not far away from both race and religion.

My favorite story changes on any given day. Today it's Geoff Wyss' "Kids Make Their Own Houses" with the poignant but realistic definition of love after 40: "We were both over forty, and it was time to choose someone to cling to through the hunchback years, the drug-cocktail and tomato-garden years."

Allan Gurganus selected these 20 stories for this anthology. He also wrote a sometimes long-winded but nonetheless brilliant introduction-- after all he is the author of the huge novel, THE OLDEST LIVING CONFEDERATE WIDOW TELLS ALL-- reminding us of what Flannery O'Connor said about why Southern writers feature freaks so often in their writing, because we can still recognize them. Mr. Gurganus takes it one step further and says these freaks are often at family reunions. He also points out that the best writers of the 20th Century are from the South: besides Ms.
