A WONDERFUL COLLECTION

This book is a wonderful collection of short stories that link human experience with animal nature. Whether as a metaphor or as an adjunct to a particular story the animals assist the telling of all of the poignant vignettes that comprise this lovely book. The narrator does an exemplary job of subtly adjusting to the feel of each of the stories. By the way Malachai ( spelling ? ) is a looney tune... my opinion, of course !

... For this book to be a series of long-ish stories. Not long enough to be novels, or even novellas, but longer than "short," stories. At first I was very disappointed, because I dislike short stories...

Replace the word cat in the title. I just want you to know when I say this is porn, you don't think I am kidding. Let me also mention that all holes are licked and poked and described in detail. This is porn.

THE DEAD ARE PEOPLE TOO

If you can get past the porn part, let me say I really enjoyed three of the seven stories. Two of the stories were the first draft of two of the stories we already heard. If you are wanting to learn how to write and want to know the difference between a first draft and a finished product, that might interest you, but for the average reader it was disappointing to basically have two stories repeated.

Eyes Left is a different and interesting zombie story.

When two hardcore horror writers do a collaboration "just for fun," you get a no-holes-barred (there's a dirty pun in there) sexy, crunchy, bloody, twisted, good time. I wanted ten more of these stories.

Sophomoric, but a lot of fun!

Take every silly word you've ever heard for the act of sex and genitals and purée them with a collection of original angry boy tales and slurp it all down. Very sweet, almost way too sweet. It's not good for you and you won't learn anything, but it tastes great anyway.

Good to see these guys team up.

I read pretty much everything these two put out, so this was an interesting one for me. Thought the narration could've been a little better, but definitely worth listening to.

Okay in places, but mostly ... Yawn.

This is a series of stories by various authors, so it's difficult to give a homogenized rating to the book.

Overall, the stories are mildly pleasant, some are "cute" or try to be cute, but for the most part, very few of the stories actually go anywhere. It seems all they do is narrate ho-hum details for a period, then they're done.

My wife and I read this one together (she reads out loud while I drive places, and vice versa), and when we were most of the way through the book, we discussed how we liked it. She said of all the stories we'd read so far, maybe two of them she enjoyed, and the rest were just ... there. We agreed it rated maybe 4 out of 10 points, so me giving it 3 stars here may be misleadingly high. Benefit of the doubt.

Bottom line questions: Would I spend my time reading another story compilation by this author? Probably not. There are just too many other books out there begging to be read.

With the title, "Dancing Dogs" I was surprised at the amount of tears I shed. I had to take a break about halfway through simply because I couldn't cry anymore. I was hesitant to start reading again but I am glad I did as the second part was more uplifting. Just like life, loving animals is easy...until it isn't. These stories are profoundly beautiful.

Dancing Dogs provides fantastic insight into the hearts and lives of many dogs. The variety is vast and encompasses many different dogs and interactions with people. I laughed and cried - sometimes at the same time. I saw myself and some of the dogs I've loved in some of these stories. It is a rewarding book to read if one would like to better understand the dogs who live, love, and interact with us. It also gave me a lot to think about. It is hard to describe, but well worth reading. If you care about dogs you'll enjoy this book. Thank you Jon Katz, you have again written in your own inimitable way of opening our eyes to the reality of our pets.

How animals think, and humans who love them

Suspend real-life (at least as we humans see it) and sit back to enjoy this beautifully written book of short stories.

Highly entertaining

This is a wonderful collection of short stories that riveted my wife and I during a car trip along the East Coast. As mentioned by another reviewer, "The Astronaut From Wyoming", is worth the price of this collection: deep, vivid characters; occasionally emotional and hilarious prose in a near-present time setting.

This is one of the best!

Excellent and varied stories, great readers and audio quality, gripping science fiction. No fluff in this collection. I've found these medium length stories to be perfect for my iPod listening. I was moved and emotionally drained by the gut-wrenching 9/11 story of one man's redemption and final understanding. Perhaps because I was at the Pentagon when it was struck on the morning of 9/11. Highly recommended listening for any fan of good fiction.

2 great stories

Especially two stories made a profound impression on me:

;The astronaut from Wyoming; with a message about how stupidity in the media and religious fanatics can make scientific discoveries and progress very hard.

;in spirit; is a beautiful novel which actually made tears to my eyes (not very difficult) shows some promise and hope for mankind.

Outstanding

All of the stories in this series are worth the purchase, but "The Cowboy from Wyoming" is one that I will always remember. What a great short about being tolerant of others' differences and not judging by appearance. The narrators are obviously professionally trained, and the sound quality of this program was superb. You can't go wrong with this one.

Wonderful, superb, please give us more, Mr Audible. Why not add it as a monthly subscription????? I have missed reading Analog for the past 10 years since eye problems stopped my 20 odd year subscription, so this was a like a breath of mountain air for me. To all free thinkers I can't recommend it highly enough, and I recommend it even higher to the rest!

Excellent reader for an excellent story

This book is a collection of stories with a Navajo influence that only adds to the telling. Cayenne Chris Conroy is a long-experienced audio artist-cum-narrator with a solid grasp of voice, tenor, and character. The two meet in a perfect storm of an audiobook I couldn't stop listening to.

The stories pull no punches and don't apologize for offending the reader or making them uncomfortable. That only makes them more fascinating and addictive, really. The short-story lengths don't detract from the individual tales; they were written to be consumed in sips, not long draughts. The characters are complex and interesting without long back stories and Cayenne carries them higher than the words alone ever could.

This audiobook makes a good gift, like many stand alone books.

I didn't want this to end

This is a collection of short stories all focusing on various characters in Moshers fictional VT northeast kingdom "Kingdom County " towns and families covered also in his many other books. The novella especially is wonderful focusing on two people caught in the historical transition in the late 1920s and 1930s from a preindustrial way of life to modernity even in the outer rural corners of the US. IF you, like me, are interested in the ruralway of life in the cold northeast of VT before electricity, passable roads in winter, etc. and the characters who lived it and loved living it, you will live this story. I was very impressed with how the narrator did the accents. I'm not an expert but I've spent enough time in VT they sounded close to authentic to me. I've actually never read or heard a book or story by Mosher where I didn't end up loving the characters and not wanting it to end. He's a master storyteller. I wish more of his books were audiobooks!
