Carter's style is so minimalist that you just want to shake him by the nape of the neck to rattle more truth out of him. He taps the reader's imagination instead of spelling everything out for you and lets you discover the subtext on your own. He writes in deceptively simple terms but somehow taps into the deep desires and fears of people in a modern culture.

Great reading by the writer.

I had just finished reading his long awaited debut novel, Who is Rich, discovered Sam the Cat thereafter and had to check it out, because I was so pleased with his novel. I cannot recall the last time I so enjoyed a writer reading (via Audible) his or her own work. Here Matt Klam is pitch perfect, in pacing, pausing and emphasis. He speaks with a resonance that is quite pleasant too. Not many novelist can pull this off, with their own tongue, outside of their head, let alone in a studio. And I can see why these stories of "transgressive sex" (his phrase) written with brutal poignant honesty made such a splash when they first came out. Well, they are still making waves in 2017. If this is your cup tea, ala Updike, Roth, and so many others I can think at the moment, you'll dig Sam the Cat. And a cat indeed he is....

Bad Boyfriend Stories You'll Never Forget

Yay!! I was so excited to see this book had finally been made available on Audible! I loved it so much when I first read it in paperback years ago that I gave copies away as gifts to every friend with a sense of humor dark enough to appreciate it. I normally don't like short stories, but these are quirkily brilliant, hilarious, original and constantly surprising, and the author* is the perfect reader of his own work. This is one you'll want to listen to more than once.

Caveats: For mature audiences only; this book is not family-friendly! Also, it's best for readers fully comfortable with deeply flawed, unreliable narrators; think Joe in Caroline Kepnes' novels You and Hidden Bodies, only without the violence.

*Fun fact for fans of Sarah Vowell: The author is Vowell's traveling companion (the one she refers to as 'My friend Klam') in her book Assassination Vacation.

atmospheric prequel

A sort prequel to The Sleepwalker, which will be released in January (Doubleday), The Premonition is a quick read, very atmospheric and a tad creepy as well.

Set in rural Vermont, Lianna Ahlberg is a high school senior when she witnesses her first "premonition". A thunderstorm, snapping power lines, and soon two horses belonging to the new neighbors, the Holbrooks, are electrocuted.

The foreshadowing indicates the Holbrook's odd little boy, Eric, who is obsessed with all things medieval will be more developed in the next story. The same is true for Lianna and Paige's(the younger sister), as well as Annalee, the girl's mother, who has bouts of sleepwalking when Mr. Ahlberg is away from home. She has done some crazy and scary things in the past.

This story wraps up with a nail biting episode that made me want to continue on with The Sleepwalker immediately. Readers who enjoyed previous contemporary fiction by this author should be sure to check both books out.

Piqued my interest for the novel.

On a rainy evening in rural Vermont, a teenager thinks she has a PREMONITION before lightning kills two horses at a nearby farm. At home, her mother does bizarre things while sleepwalking. Nearby, an odd boy obsesses about medieval times.

This prequel to to Chris Bohjalian's upcoming novel THE SLEEPWALKER piqued my interest with interesting characters and flawless writing.

Brings you right into the family

Excellent short story of a family whose mother has a parasomnia, or sleepwalking disorder. Very interesting. As the family consists of the professor father who is out of town, 17-year-old female teenager doing magic shows for children's birthday parties and the 12-year old girl who is expected to be nice and make friends with the new young odd boy who moved into the farm place across the road. The mother and teenage daughter witness the electrocution of their two horses from a downed power line during a bad storm as they were driving home.

This is a prequel to the author's "Sleepwalking" novel which sells for $13.99 on Amazon. I would LOVE to read that one but the price is a little too steep for me. However, the $1.99 for The Premonition was well worth it in itself and a good story on it's own to boot. I highly recommend this excellent writer's book.

Great intro to a new novel

I enjoyed this prequel and look forward to the novel, from one of my favorite authors.

Good story - the version without the extra twist

I bought this book after just seeing - and thoroughly enjoying - the play in London. I read about how Christie changed the ending for the play version (as well as some other changes). Im not sure which end I like better. Id say the end in the play (I wont tell it) came as more of a surprise, because I had an inkling on my own about the end of the story before that last twist. If you like Agatha Christie, youll like this, though it is kind of short. The narrator was fine, but nothing outstanding. Perhaps the story is too short to give him an opportunity to shine.

Lee-ly good narration

An intriguing short story from the master, similar in tone to the likes of Endless Night and And Then There Were None, in terms of darker motives undisguised by a kindly Marple or Poirot protagonist: plumbs darker depths, leaving you with a classic Christie twist. Superbly narrated by the 'other' Master!

Marvellous

The story is entertaining; a gentle puzzle for the listener with enough intrigue to keep the plot moving at a suitable pace.

Christopher Lee is amazing. He brings gravitas and style to an already successful piece.

Although the ending was guessed at it in no way spoilt the story. I think listening to Christopher Lee talking about shopping in Tesco would be fascinating, and in this book he excels at character and scence setting. Much fun

Ahh, That's Right!

Delightful, heartwarming tale, complete with it's last scene which does indeed add a twist to the story, making this truly "A Fairy Tale Of Home". I have also the 2013 version, read by another popular narrator, which is missing the last scene. This 2016 Simon Prebble version is infinitely better than any previous! Not only does it have the missing last bit, but Mr Prebble, the best of all when it comes to Dickens, gives it a wonderful, warm read, and gifts us with his trademark living characters.

Just simply stories
