A fairly comprehensive and brief discussion about the Holocaust and concentration camps

This is not the first book that I have read about the Holocaust or concentration camps nevertheless this e-book World War II Auschwitz: A History From Beginning to End is fairly comprehensive and hits all the high points. This book is especially useful for someone with minimal knowledge of the Holocaust and the killing factories that were established by the SS. The book starts off by discussing the prejudice and various genocidal attacks the Jews have suffered through history. The book also discusses the excesses of various medical doctors and scientists of the Third Reich. If one cannot read more comprehensive books about the Holocaust or the concentration camps, then they should at least read this book to understand why Israel should exist.

Truths about Auswitz that's not fully known.

The book was well written, but I hit some snags when reading it, and had to go back & read a couple of pages a second time before I understood it. The book opened my eyes to the difference between a Concentration Camp & a Death Camp. It also shed some light on the liberating of Auschwitz when the Russians & Americans were getting nearer, and how the prisoners had to make a choice to leave & head towards Germany with the guards, or stay there & wait. Interesting too that when the Russians arrived they basically turned their backs on the remaining prisoners & fled when they saw the mass graves.

A very general overview

Stories of American, British, German & Japanese submarines in World War Two. The activities of the Italians, French & minor powers are not covered. This short study is written in a simple easy to understand style. As it is free, it would be a good place to begin research for a school paper. You should also consider reading a very similar earlier work, WORLD WAR TWO SUBMARINE STORIES: TRUE STORIES FROM THE UNDERWATER BATTLEGROUNDS by Ryan Jenkins which is a very good summary. Not only is this book very similar to Ryan Jenkins' book, but the first 4 sentences of the review(now removed) by Dollsunset are taken word for word from my review of the Jenkins book.

(If you are interested in submarines and people prevailing against adversity despite the odds, the saga of the WW2 Polish submarine Orzel may be of interest. Search kindle for THE LAST EAGLE to find a fictionalized account.)

Appears to be written for children with no care of grammar or spelling errors.

Cyrus again writes a substandard account of WWII. Cyrus seriously needs to take some basic writing classes and learn proper English grammar and spelling. He would also do well to do some real reading before attempting another book on history; especially when that history is as well-documented as WWII.

Well researched, poorly written

This book was well researched but the writing was academic in style and somewhat amateurish. It read like a thesis submitted by a candidate for a master's or directorial degree in history.

Don't Bother

This is a poorly written rehash of information available for free on the Internet or to be found in other much better written books.

Short history of WWII Submarines

Decent, quick read about subs of WWII. Not too deep, detailed or technical, just a little overview of the subject. But not really stunning.

The History of Brave Women in Combat in World War Two!!!

This book recounts the history who served in combat during World War Two (WW II). This is a not well known aspect of WW II history of great interest to me and a subject that needs to be known by many American readers! Human history provides many accunts of women who activly padrticipated in warfare. Western Culture however, dominated by the Christian Dogma of otiginal sin and hiererarical notions of a male dominate society has traditionally cast women in the role of the weaker sex and nurturer, with a life focused on child birthing and rearing, maintenance of the home and religious obligation This book chronicles the stories of four women who actively fought a combatants' role during WW 2, Andree Borrel, Nancy Wake, Violette Reine Szabo, and Lise de Baissa, each put their lives on the line for their countries.The author's descriptions of their bravery and sacrifices rival those of any male! Their stories should be known and appreciated by all!

Good Introduction to Women's contributions to WW2.

I found Cyrus Zachary's books on Amazon and bought two for my teenage granddaughter. She is very interested in WW2. These books are great introductions to the topic of women's leadership. My aunt, Violet Kochendoerfer, created and ran three different American Red Cross Allied social clubs (in England, France and Germany) and wrote an autobiography about the experience, called "One Woman's WW 2" That book is now in my granddaughter's hands as well.

WWII women True Stories

For a short book it packed a lot of information. These women were truly heroes and some made the ultimate sacrifice. This book is just the tip of the iceberg regarding women in WWII. However what was written was good and it brought to attention these women's stories. Hopefully more will be written about other women in WWII. Great book.

Money definitely doesn't buy happiness! From the USA to England....

Imagine travelling across the ocean to meet the man you would marry and the family you wold marry into? Itâs quite a story and true which makes it remarkable in so many ways. Some of these marriages worked out but most of them did not â they brought money and fame but left loneliness,Âinfidelity, bankruptcy and divorce.

There were many homes restored as a result of this practice âÂBlenheim Palace was desperate for a new roof for example and it was the Vanderbilt money which made this possible â exchange for marriage and a title.ÂNew marriages, new hope and new life for stately homes up and down the country, but inside the facade was crumbling.

You do learn a lot from this book. Marrying for money is not all itâs cracked up to be and you never know what goes on behind these gilded facades...

This book was a little hard to follow at times because of the way it was written.

A charming and informative prequel to Downton!

I was bought this book as a gift and was pleasantly surprised! What a treat it was. I had watched the TV series Downton Abby and was immediately drawn to the stories shared in this book, as they are almost a prequel to Downton. The writing is entertaining, and informative so it's a book you find hard to put down. I also liked how Miss Ferry told the story of the female protagnists of this tale. In a time where men dominated, these women forged their own path. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about this time in our history. A charming book I have already ordered copies for a few of my friends!

Engaging Read and Listen

Would you listen to Sleep with Angels again? Why?

This is a difficult but redemptive story of the author's discovery of new layers of her identity. Troubling, yet inspiring! I typically listen to audible books while in my car going here and there on daily tasks and errands. I was so thoroughly engaged by the story and narration I listened at home and office.

The author continually has Sailors calling each other Soldier. Anyone who has ever served in either service knows how wrong this is.... He also claims he thoroughly researched his history and that is also far from true. He continually makes historical mistakes. It is obvious he has no knowledge of how the military is run or how service members' act.

Yoder is a hero.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Right to Homeschool to be better than the print version?

Audio is always better except for detailed non-fiction with lists of statistics. This book is much better told in audio format because it is a story.

What did you like best about this story?

It gives a good summary of the issues and background of the Wis. v. Yoder case, and it draws accurate conclusions. It is respectful of the Amish culture while accurately portraying the narrow victory for parental rights and the ramifications of that victory.

What does Jennifer L. Vorpahl bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

This is a good narrator with a calm voice. Her voice is not distracting so you focus on the story.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Everyone should know the history of Wis. v. Yoder and the parental rights issues involved. Yoder and other Amish families won an important freedom at great cost to themselves. The only thing I would change is the reference to Wisconsin's compulsory education laws. Wisconsin has compulsory attendance laws, not compulsory education laws. The state recognizes that it can not force an education, it can only force attendance. It is a minor thing, and the rest of the book is very good.

Any additional comments?

This book is very relevant to the educational issues today, particularly school vouchers, charter schools, and homeschooling.
