Fascinating Look Into the Past

Would you consider the audio edition of Pinky to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version of the book. This story of historical non-fiction is packed with facts and dates, which are always a bit harder to digest in auditory form, but I'd guess that the audio edition is the preferred option here. The narration (a great job by Mr. Delaney, given the inherent dryness of non-fiction material) pulls you into the past and puts you into the story in a way I don't think you'd be able to accomplish by reading the text.

What other book might you compare Pinky to and why?

Pinky is similar to other non-fiction history I've read, but the fact that the material is based on the man's diary entries gives you an insight not available in other books.

Which character as performed by Scott P. Delaney was your favorite?

I have to go with the main man here -- Lt.JG Francis Roland Register. Mr. Delaney is able to bring the man off the page and into focus as an active participant in the events. I got a good sense of Pinky's moods and attitudes as he created the written monologues of his diary entries.

Any additional comments?

The criterium I look for when reading reviews of works I want to purchase is whether or not the reviewer indicates that he's motivated to seek out other works by the same author or narrator. In the case of Pinky, I enjoyed this audiobook enough to want to listen to more by this author and by this narrator.

Utter Garbage.

Having read Monuments Men and Saving Italy, I ordered this new book to learn more about the title character. This "book" is nothing but a joke!. It is no more than an apparent several page internet article now published in book form with markedly enlarged font, double spaced, written at a Third Grade Level at best, is poorly edited with numerous errors, and provides about as much information as a half decent book jacket. This is a total waste of time and money, and frankly, a grossly understated disgrace to the legacy of Ms. Valland.

a big disappointment.

I had wanted to know more about this beautiful and gifted woman. Instead I got a book with a picture of her on the cover and no other photo in the 'book'. The book has very large type and wide spaced lines, with little interesting new information that cannot be gotten off the internet. I was hoping to get a more in depth story of her life. Her name was sometimes uncapitalized and gave me the impression that the editing was not that important. I would hope that in the future someone takes the time do do an in depth research of the lovely and intelligent woman to give a better sense of her in the history of France, and the Monuments Men.

A Very Bad Choice. Readers Beware!

This book was a big disappointment, badly written with many mistakes. I understand that Patrick Bunker is a business man, certainly not a writer. I am well informed about this story. I feel I was duped into buying the book. I am going to send it back. It is not worth even for a class of eighth graders. Amazon, be aware that other books like this one are on the market. You should not support this kind of marketing approach. Just horrible!!!

I was sorely disappointed. I read the "booklet" in 16 minutes

I purchased this book hoping to learn more about the life of Rose Valland after reading 2 books by Robert M Edsel. I was sorely disappointed. I read the "booklet" in 16 minutes. It read more like a book report on WWII than a book on Rose Valland. I paid $10.04 for this booklet and that was REALLY over priced.

What did you love best about A Man on the Moon: The Voyages of the Apollo Astronauts?

Chaikin's approach to the book, which isn't a straight history of Apollo. This is not a dry, dusty history, but rather a character-driven exploration of the program, with all of its brilliant successes and heart-breaking failures. Nor is it hagiography. The Apollo astronauts are real people, with all the flaws that that entails, and Chaikin does a great job of capturing their strengths as well as their weaknesses.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Though not a "character" in the literary sense: Pete Conrad. The chapter on Apollo 12 is my favorite.

What does Bronson Pinchot bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Superb inflection and a recreation of the astronaut's speaking styles. Pinchot's reading was very nicely done and he does a great job of capturing the personalities of the astronauts. He doesn't try to do impressions, though. It is his interpretation of the astronauts, but accurate ones if you've ever heard one speak.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but I'm a manned space flight nerd. Your mileage may vary.

Long, comforting book on moon exploration

This book chronicles the full set of Apollo missions. It is very broad in scope, which is both a strength and weakness. There were many times that I wanted to know some of these astronauts more deeply as people, and other times I wanted more scientific detail. I realize, though, that the book that gave what I wanted might have been 2-3 times as long, and it already was more than 20 hours! Still, a number of the astronauts were profiled in depth, and this book is full of interesting scientific detail. It is cool that it covers the whole Apollo program. There were so many great parts, with even the slower moving pieces still interesting and easy to listen to. It is hard to write a great book which covers so much, and Chaikin did a pretty good job of it. I quit many audiobooks from boredom, but this had my interest throughout. One other flaw - it felt like the author tried to minimize anything negative about the astronauts, and it had a little bit of a sanitized feel to it. I didn't mind because these astronauts were pretty heroic. Overall, this book was interesting and uplifting, and had a great narrator. I will look at the moon differently now.

As a child growing up in the 60's I experienced the moon missions on TV, and back then they seemed "nominally" great.
