Publisher's Summary:
Ike Schwartz is the sheriff of Picketsville, a small town not far from Washington, D.C. A former CIA agent, Ike remains connected to the Agency through a friend who sometimes still involves him in cases on the side. Ike is also courting Ruth, the fiercely independent president of the towns new university. All this is usually enough to bring some interesting conflicts Ikes way.
A new one arises when a body is found in Picketsvilles urgent-care clinic, a body sitting in a chair but dead for hours. Perhaps not coincidentally, there is also a break-in at the house of a new university faculty member whose expertise lies in icons. Can a specific icon called the Virgin of Tenderness be the spark to these crimes? Ike figures that any spycraft contained in the picture would be decades old. Or would it?
Critic Reviews:
Absorbing. With folksy charm and dollops of humor, Ramsay crafts a tale of international intrigue in which the past and present make poor bedfellows. Fans of Ruth and Ikes blossoming romance will find plenty to cheer about. (Publishers Weekly)
Sure-footed plotting and easy banter make Ramsay's sixth Sheriff Ike mystery a brisk, entertaining read. (Kirkus Reviews)

A pretty good read
This one starts of with Louis Dakis. He's an Iconologist.
An Iconologist who finds, repairs and sells Icons.
He and his wife are separated. The wife is in the store they are partners in. This store is in DC and it has been broken into and ransacked.
His wife went to buy an Icon in Egypt, met a smooth talker and immediately changed Louis for Sacci. This was one big revelation to hubby.
After separating from his wife, Louis moved to Picketsville and got a job at Callend College.
Louis gets to his house and finds he's had a break in and the perp is still inside. Louis yells, the perp heads out the back door and Louis never get a look at him.
We also have a body found in the ER clinic in Piketsville. Seems the guy was sitting in a chair quite dead and none of the medical people noticed him. Of course the ER was full of sick kids throwing up all over the place at the time. The place was packed.
Ike and his deputies investigate and find the guy was shot somewhere else and dumped in the ER. Many questions with no answers.
Ike also investigates the break in at the Dakis residence. Dakis fills him in on what he knows. Ike asks questions about Icons and Dakis shows him one. The Eye of the Virgin. Ike examines it and finds something he never expected to see.
He contacts Charlie Garland and the race is on.
So begins one great read.
This one has murderers, a traitor, Isreali contractors, a history lesson from 1967, the FBI and one dead guy who apparantly made his way into Mrs. Dakis's life for one reason only. The Icon.
Just a good well written story with twists and turns all over the place.
We also get a happy ending for Sam and her FBI guy. Who knew?
Five Stars all the way.
