Fun To Read

This book was fun to read, for someone like me who has an interest in the evolution of how we got to be who we are. I appreciate that it is written not in "professor-ese" but in accessible every day English. The author connects the dots, from the earliest ideas humans had about our existence, to modern day quantum theory, and explains how each "break through" thinker (like Aristotle or Newton or Einstein) built off the work of other people and previous work. Also how break throughs in thinking many times included debunking what was previously thought of as empirical truth. All very interesting.

How science REALLY evolved, messy, non linear and very interesting. Brings those science gods down to earth.

My physics students often have the deluded idea that scientific truths are discovered in a very linear fashion by boring white guys who know exactly what they are doing, and set out to do it.

The question of the limits of classical science expands to questions of the limits of all supposedly objectivist, one-right-answer ideologies in biological, socio-economic, and political realms. Is everyone really selfish? Is the world objectively competitive or cooperative?

In a parallel critical review of the new philosophy of science the contributions of the author's mentors, Feyerabend, Lakatos, Kuhn, and Popper mark a parallel path to complementarity, undermining the Spectator representation of detached objective inquiry. Through his personal interactions, Hawking reveals himself as a participant, concerned with how we should live. He steers us toward a more desirable, moral future. The new post-scientific participant understanding of the universe requires a paradigm shift to a more general theory that can both explain the successes of science and yet understand them in a new way. In the more general theory, our embodied participant inquiry is understood in a new way wherein the sciences and the humanities are necessarily reunified.

Toward a Post-Objectivist Paradigm Shift

This is an exciting book for many reasons. It locates the most well known and well regarded of contemporary astro-physicists, Stephen Hawking, surprisingly at the forefront of a revolutionary paradigm shift in how the pursuit of science is understood within our culture, from the paradigm of a detached, objectivist spectator of a deterministic cosmic mechanism to the paradigm of an embodied participant of a universe in process. Bristol is not alone in pursuing this paradigm shift, there are many others that have been arguing and advocating such a shift for a good while, not least scientist-philosopher Michael Polanyi, whose 1958 book Personal Knowledge (newly reissued from U of Chicago Press) advocated for a post-critical understanding of scientific knowledge in continuity with non-scientific knowledge. For the past several years Bristolâs Institute of Science, Engineering, and Public Policy (ISEPP) Linus Pauling Memorial Lecture Series has brought to Portland, Oregon, a wide range of internationally recognized, eminent speakers who have collectively helped move forward this paradigm shift.

Excellent essay on benevolence in Objectivism

David Kelley has done an excellent job in relating the concept of benevolence to Objectivist virtues, and the virtue of justice in particular.

From first reading Ayn Rand's work Atlas Shrugged, I felt defiant in being taught to believe that altruism and sacrifice are moral ideals. Atlas Shrugged illustrated to me why these are NOT moral ideals, but can actually cause great suffering.

But in my defiance, I failed to see how many of Rand's heroes are actually benevolent, and repeatedly so. Kelley, after defining benevolence and arguing for its status as a moral virtue, goes on to explain that Ayn Rand herself thought benevolence was a virtue, as exemplified by several heroes in her novels.

Thank you for writing this essay, David Kelley. I very thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated the clarity you brought to my mind on these topics.

To those reading this review: if you're wondering how you can be self-interested, kind, and moral, all at the same time, I strongly recommend you read this essay.

Excellent book and excellent addition to Objectivist ethics

Excellent book and excellent addition to Objectivist ethics. Kelley shows who just as we should use our reason to create the means of our physical survival and spiritual well-being, so we should want to create the kind of culture and social ethos that will allow us as individuals to better survive and flourish. A must read!
