Generally, people suffering from bipolar 2 disorder will have, or will experience at least one hypomanic episode in their life. Unfortunately, people suffering from this condition also suffer spells of depression, sometimes quite severe. This is where the term "manic depression" comes from.

but they're all superficial. If you're looking for in-depth explanations then don't bother with this book. The narrator was very dry and bland, it was hard to stay focused while she was reading.

Great Content, Horrible Narration

Why would they choose an audiobook narrator with diction problems?? She slurs through words, and mispronounces double T's. It is a shame, because the content of the book is very concise and useful, but the narration takes away and distracts.

Bering cites lots of creative research into the nature of beliefs and mind. This psychological perspective critically explores our belief tendencies and also respects the complexity of our human nature.

I appreciate his mixture of scientific, literary and historic references.

I saw a review critical of Bering's voice. I strongly disagree! There is a spirited quality authentic intelligence that comes through in the reading. I much prefer hearing the author's genuine voice over the smoothed out and phoney professional narrators used in some other audiobooks. That's one of the reasons I particularly enjoyed this book, and have come to the conclusion that I only want to buy audiobooks narrated by the author.

Compelling, liberating and witty, too.

The title 'The Belief Instinct' took me to the audio verizon. Now, I plan to read with fascination more of Dr. Bering's insight and wit.

The Overall Message...

of this book is important, that is, that the deterministic functionalist view of brain science robs humanity of free will and eschews responsibility for deeds both good and bad (ironically harkening back to the determinism of the radical behaviorism that brain science was supposedly replacing with a more enlightened and human view)--and that there are some charlatans out there that oversimplify real brain science and con others: for instance, the "trust in a bottle" oxytosin spray that you spritz on yourself and then supposedly get along with the whole world. (One sees the neighborhood Quagmire taking a bath in the stuff and then making his way down to the local pick-up joint.) The problem with the book is that it is too dismissive and ironically sometimes mocks the work of scientists who are working against the deterministic model. Better books to read on this subject are Richard Davidson's The Emotional Life Of The Brain, John Arden's Rewire Your Brain and Jeffery Schwarz's The Mind And The Brain. It is true that we don't want to reduce human beings and our wonderfully inexplicable minds to a bucket of chemicals, but we don't want to be too dismissive of science in the process, as it was our marvelous minds that came up with science to begin with, in order to understand and better manage life's complexities for better survival and enjoyable and productive living.

Biased, much better other audible books available

The authors would have told a much more interesting story if they would have considered all perspectives instead of just their narrow biases. They argued that neuroscience has some bad science and charlatans and makes wrong conclusions. I get that, all things with humans have flaws, but there is another side to the equation, neuroscience research is a real science and really incredible things are currently being done in the field. Look, read a book before the year 2000 on consciousness and all you'll get is some incoherent philosophical speculations on it's real nature, but read a recent book on consciousness that includes neuroscience you'll get a useful understanding.

They're right, a fMRI makes a lousy lie detector for all the reasons they say.

Revealing, Sad, Funny...altogether Fascinating

The personal accounts of patients' psychological challenges recounted here are truly unique and fascinating. What sets this apart from other POV accounts of psychology is that we see the illness from both patient and therapist perspectives. This allows the listener/reader to better understand the illness and treatment.

The illnesses recounted and the patients' telling of how these came about and progressed is something not often presented in other works of this particular sub-genre with such clarity and grace.

Well researched and written, this title is worth listening to. You'll find yourself drawn into the cases and finding an understanding and sympathy for these patients. There is a lot of humour to be found here, but it is never presented at the expense of the patient. Kudos to the authors for that!

The performance leaves something to be desired...a bit to light, for my taste...but not enough to keep you from listening.

This is not a title that may jump up and grab your attention, but it's certainly a nice surprise if you do!

This book offers very little insight. It is nothing more than a collection of juicy, gossipy stories. Little cohesion between any.

This book was fun (and at times funny), intriguing and very educational as well. It made feel much better about my own life when I thought about the patients' lives portrayed in this book.

I was sad when it ended. I simply love it!!
