If you want a down and dirty Caroline Myss book

I like this teaching even though it's a shorter version of another talk/book done by this author. I enjoyed this version because it's condensed. What I didn't like is that it leaves off abruptly and the next lesson is just as important to help with this one. If you want a down and dirty Caroline Myss book or refresher this is it. If you want the real deal read your book Sacred Contracts.

Great! I have a lazy eye and cannot see 3D

After visiting an eye doctor, he suggested I buy this book before beginning vision therapy. This book gives you an in depth view of what a doctor without stereo vision went through to get it. Gives you hope!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes and no. You need to take time to digest some of the information so taking more than a couple sessions to finish it is ideal.

Any additional comments?

This is a must read for anyone with strabismus; especially if you have had it since you were a baby. Susan explains the condition in an easy to understand manner and guides you through her transformation from seeing as a strabismic, to seeing in 3D. The journey she takes you on is worth the read in itself, even for someone who doesn't know what seeing with strabismus is like.

I have had esotropic strabismus for as long as I can remember (just like Susan) and have always been told by Optometrists and Ophthalmologists that I will never see in 3D. They have recommended surgery purely for cosmetic purposes and snark at the idea of vision therapy stating there is no scientific evidence that suggests it works.

Best Intro To CBT I Know

I already own the print book, so this was an additional treat. I've read over a dozen books on Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and this is the best one of all. Short and concise, it really packs a punch. Gets right to the point. As a bonus, the author narrates his own work really well. If you've been thinking about checking out REBT or CBT, this is the place to start. I doubt if one could do better.

Get this book.

I've studied the sorts of topics this book addresses for nearly 20 years, and this book touches on many of the most important issues, and it will convince you, that you are in charge, you are the 'CEO' of your grey matter, and you can influence your choices by simply changing them, and by reframing them as well. If you want to know how to rewire your subconcious without really understanding the subconscious, this book will give you the tools. I've already listened 3 times, and I know I will listen many more.

"The Brain Mechanic" needs a complete overhaul...

What disappointed you about The Brain Mechanic?

To me it felt like the Author fell in love with his one concept and turned what might have been a good magazine article or research paper into a mindlessly repetitive book.

I listened to the last 3/4 of this book because I could not believe how bad it was and didn't want to warn other listeners off without being fair enough to listen to the whole thing. Consider yourself warned.

How could the performance have been better?

I like it when an Author reads their own works because they often bring a personal passion, but If you had a coworker that talked to you in the same way that this Author preaches at you, then you would take a different hallway to avoid him.

Simple. It just plain works

What made the experience of listening to The Brain Mechanic the most enjoyable?

The fact that he grabbed and held on to my attention. The simplicity with which he presents an otherwise complicated process - that we can in fact change the way we think by changing our beliefs.

Superficial, but mostly correct

If you have no scientific background and are unfamiliar with the quirks of cognitive biases, then this book can give you a good introduction to the topic. The author gives a brief, superficial tour of many areas of cognitive study, but doesn't explore any of them enough to satisfy a reader who has any familiarity with the subject. If you are familiar with the terms "neuron", "bias" and "conditioning" you will probably want a different book.

He discusses our fear bias, various heuristics and some basic evolutionary biology. His style is scatter shot and he seems to wander from topic to topic without much structure. More annoyingly, he gets halfway through certain chapters and says "maybe this isn't really a bug because it mostly works OK."

Other books do a better job discussing the topics touched on in this book. For an evolutionary biology perspective try "The Accidental Mind," for a cognitive psychology point of view read "How We Decide" or "The Blank Slate", for a behavioral perspective "Mistakes Were Made", for an in depth discussion of fear "The Science of Fear."

I would recommend this to someone looking for a brief introduction to our brain's quirks, but the book will likely leave even the casual reader wanting more.

Not for the casual curious listener

I saw and heard a couple interviews with this author which made the book sound interesting, but after listening, I can not recommend it. The only audience that might find it truly interesting is a first or second year college student considering psychology or neurology- it seems to read like a very general cliffs notes of past studies in these fields.

After slogging through the early chapters of studies, facts, and details, I expected to be rewarded with some practical examples of brain bugs in modern society and how to defeat them. Instead, all the book seemed to do was sum up with "the human brain hasn't evolved, so some tasks aren't easy, and, uh, that's that."

I've never been inspired to write a negative review of a book until now.

Scary And Ambitious

A great contemporary book about the future of our world. Even offline, the Internet changes everything. Jump on or get left behind. Whether you're a religious person, a fun lover, explorer, technophile, businessman, entrepreneur, freelancer, philosopher, or any or non of them, this is an important book that should never be overlooked.

Misleading book summary and title.

I thought this book would be about all the current and future advances in VR and the industry and how those advances effect the future. Instead, the majority of the book was just about research studies....a lot of them not having anything to do with VR. During the second half I skipped through 5 chapters because I lost interest.

The most amazing book that I've heard recently!

Just an incredible mind-bender that is not artificial or immaterial! Virtual reality is real! You've got to read this one!

Brilliant!! Please, what about VSI philosophers?

Evans has done a good job with this sharp introduction to Emotion, although he mentions in the book, many philosophers, like Kant, Aristotle, Hume, Rousseau, Marx, philosophers that I really would like to listen in this VSI collection to understand the book better.

Eschewing the thorny little devil of definition till last, Evan's first chapter introduces us to several categories of emotion. He describes how the most basic emotions (fear, joy, disgust) are common to most higher-animals through the shared limbic system, an age-old group of brain structures, whilst other emotions we're more complicit in creating, either by incessantly thinking over them (cognitive feedback) or through social expectations of our behaviour

The second chapter deals with the bad press emotion sometimes picks up as an occlusion to rational, and so presumably saner, thought. Evans tries to show how emotions have been an important evolutionary tool for the past 100million years; fear and joy each being quite functional adaptations teaching us what to avoid and what makes sense to cherish.

The following two chapters deal with our ability to induce emotions and how our emotional potential affects us every day in positive ways we are often unaware of. Finally, in chapter five, Evans begins to ask the question, `what is emotion?' His answer is that there is no stock of emotions as such, but rather emotional events, combining behavioural, neurobiological and evolutionary aspects. And although this may seem unsatisfying to some, it does leave the door open nicely for the evolving areas of AI and Robotics. Computers with genetic algorithms evolving their own programmes and environmental interactions may well develop forms of emotive consciousness different from our own yet no less `real'.

Evans has enthusiasm and a sense of humour, he's not too stompy in the boggy bits and leaves enough trails for the intrepid to explore. That's what you look for from an intro writer! GreaT!

Wow...

I really don't understand the handful of bad reviews for this book. I thought it was a wonderful and clear introduction to evolutionary psychology: in a nutshell, that all our motivations are shaped to serve our survival in current circumstances. After reading this, one could certainly go on with more certainty to writers like Pinker, Wright and Dawkins.

Great primer on Evolutionary Psychology

What did you love best about The Modern Scholar: Evolutionary Psychology I?

The subject was covered with interesting examples and theories that could explain why things are the way they are in our minds and, if they are true, what that means in our modern day environments.Obviously evolutionary pyschology will be about what adaptations our mind has evolved to help us survive and reproduce and I thought the author did a good job keeping to that central theme while exploring briefly ideas that venture from certain conclusions. The author is humorous at times and I thought the book was well read. I'm looking forward to the next segment!

Suprisingly Bad

While I am not a practicing scientist I have a doctoral degree and read a good bit of Evolutionary Psychology. I looked forward to this as a good overview of the topic. Instead this is a terribly naive and weak series of lectures. I'm really shocked Cornell University lets this lecturer teach their intro to Evolutionary Psych.

First, the lecturer spends most of the first few lectures arguing that Evolutionary Psych is the first and only field to really understand the human mind "the way it really is and not they way we want it to be." He creates laughable straw men of every other theory of human mind and behavior and then compares them to a hopelessly rosy and triumphalist presentation of Ev Psych. Really?

This man should be forced to take Basic Logic and Philosophy of Science before he ever stands in front of students again.

He actually leaves out many of the methods and discoveries of Evolutionary Psych. His central focus for much of the series is how behavior could have evolved in animals. He then extrapolates from animal behavior to human behavior. Extrapolating from animal research to human research takes up a majority of his lectures. He spends an hour discussing research on communal behavior in social insects and maybe 5 minutes discussing communal behavior in humans.

Poorly thought out formatting for audible apps

This book has a significant problem which will greatly hinder anyone who wants to listen to it on one of audible's apps. There are sixteen chapters in the book, and rather than give you one file with a table of contents (like any other large book, class, or lecture would do), every single chapter is its own separate file.

Now, the problem here is that each of those chapters has the exact same icon, and the title of each file BEGINS with the complete (lengthy!) title of the text. So, downloading the book, you now have sixteen identical looking icons and titles in your audiobook library, that you have to click through on to figure out which individual chapter one happens to be. If you organize your titles by "recently listened to" as is the default, these are going to get very jumbled up, very quickly, and good luck listening to things in order.

Good text, just don't bother listening to it in order. Five stars for the text, negative sixteen stars and ENDLESS ANNOYANCE for whatever usability wiz-kid thought this was a good idea.
